PGR V4 has been finalized, with some details revealed. New predictions thread

Posted: 09 Dec 2017 08:51 PM PST

According to Suar, director of Panda Global, there will be 10 players new to the PGR, 4 returning players who were unranked on V3, and 14 players on the PGR V3 will be unranked this season. With the season concluding last weekend with MKLeo's victory at 2GG Championship and these details being revealed for the ranking, we can much better predict what the rankings will be.

Cloudhead Live Rank has been the closest predictor for PGR rankings. The season 3 ranking was very close to the actual PGR V3 rankings, so we will reference the Cloudhead Live Season 4 Rankings in our predictions. So the predicted top 50 ranking will contain 36 players present on the PGR V3, and 14 new players, 4 of which were ranked in previous seasons. So we need to predict 14 currently ranked players who will be unranked in PGR V4 and 14 currently unranked players who will be on the PGR V4 rankings. Before we start predictions, let's reduce these numbers by figuring out which new players have a practically guaranteed chance of being ranked and which currently ranked players are the most unlikely to fall off. Also, we'll assuming that Area 51 players like Shoyo James and Wrath do not count as ranked players on PGR V3, so we'll be treating them as unranked.

Let's start off with the most obvious new players who will make it on the ranking.

  • Mistake
  • Cosmos
  • Lima
  • Zenyou

We can say almost for certain that these four players, none of which have ever been ranked on the Panda Global Rankings, will be ranked on the PGR V4. They all have a sufficient number of high placements at eligible events and enough wins against PGR players. Granted, the latter statement is a baseline since Cloudhead Live only computes wins against currently ranked players on the PGR V3, while each PGR ranking uses a sophisticated algorithm and the head-to-head is computed against players on the new ranking (ie. AC is ranked on PGR V3, and his set count is listed as 5-7, and this set count is against players on the PGR V3). However, the four players above have more than enough wins against players who are very likely to return on PGR V4. I had to remove Charliedaking from the list above since most of his wins are against players that might not necessarily make it on PGR V4. Charliedaking still has a good chance of being ranked, but it's not as certain. Nevertheless, now that we can assume the four listed players will be ranked on PGR V4, this eliminates some guesswork and leaves us with six more newcomers. Before we start deciding who those players will be, let's look at the current PGR V3 and figure out which players will fall off at the end of the season.

Of the 50 players on PGR v3, 36 will be ranked on PGR V4, but 14 will not. Let's look at the players that lack results and have almost no chance of staying on the PGR.

  • FOW
  • Nietono
  • ScAtt
  • Myran
  • Ranai

These players have very little or no results this season, so we can assume that these five players will make it onto the PGR V4. That leaves nine more currently ranked players who will not make it onto the PGR V4.

Finally, we need to consider the returning PGR players who were not on PGR V3 but were ranked on PGR V1 or V2. Here are all of the players who have been ranked on PGR V1 or V2 but not on V3:

  • Shaky
  • Vinnie
  • Tyrant
  • Hyuga
  • Trela
  • RAIN
  • Mew2King
  • SlayerZ
  • Pink Fresh
  • False
  • Mr. Concon
  • Ito
  • Angel Cortes
  • Xzax
  • iStudying
  • Megafox
  • Ryo
  • Cacogen
  • 8BitMan
  • Seagull Joe
  • NickRiddle
  • Tearbear
  • Dath
  • dyr
  • Day
  • Pugwest
  • Saj
  • Wrath
  • Darkshad
  • Taiheita

There's about 30 players here, and only four of these will be on PGR V4. Before doing any more predictions, let's reduce this list, since the majority of these players are nowhere near active enough to make PGR for this season. The following list contains the players from above that have at least 1 PGR win this season:

  • Vinnie
  • Trela
  • RAIN
  • K9sbruce
  • False
  • Mr. Concon
  • Angel Cortes
  • Xzax
  • 8BitMan
  • dyr
  • Wrath
  • Darkshad

That leaves us with 11 PGR veterans who could make it back onto the PGR. The ones we eliminated weren't even worth considering, so let's see which ones here could make it. Vinnie has wins on MKLeo, Locus, and 2 wins against falln this season, and decent placings with 13th at A-tier ARMS Saga, 9th at S-tier Dreamhack Atlanta, and 25th at S-tier 2GG: FE Saga give him a very strong chance of making PGR V4. Tyrant has wins over Zinoto, Mr.E, and 2 wins over Elegant, along with consistent placings at several A-tier and S-tier events, giving him a very strong chance of making PGR V4. Trela's single win on Zero is pretty much all he's done this season, so he likely won't make PGR this season. RAIN has done very little this season, so we can count him out. K9sbruce has consistent high placings and wins over CaptainZack, Marss, Mr.E, and Shuton, giving him a strong chance of making PGR V4.False's wins on MKLeo and WaDi along with 9th at EVO make him a strong contender for PGR V4. Mr Concon beat Mr.R and AC this season, and placed top 48 at a few 2GG events this season, so he could make it onto the PGR but his results are nowhere near as strong as Vinnie or False. Angel Cortes has nothing this season besides a win on Mr.E. Xzax has had consistent respectable placings at several A-tiers and S-tiers this season, and he has a few decent PGR wins. His season looks a lot like NAKAT's season in V3, as NAKAT had consistent placings but no top 10 wins or anything, so this gives Xzax a decent chance of making it on. 8BitMan's only PGR win this season was Myran, who probably won't make PGR this season, so we can count him out. dyr has wins on Salem, Abadango, and Mr.E, along with high placements at Super Smash Con and Big House, so he has a very high chance of making it onto PGR V3. Wrath's single win on MVD likely isn't enough to get him onto PGR V4, so we can count him out. Finally, DarkShad placed 7th at GTX, beating ZeRo and Nairo, so he almost definitely will make PGR this season. So this leaves us with the following five players:

  • Vinnie (56)
  • Tyrant (46)
  • K9sbruce (39)
  • False (87)
  • Xzax (47)
  • dyr (54)
  • Darkshad (40)

Listed next to their main(s) is their currentrank on Cloudhead Live. Four of these seven players will make it onto PGR V4. We can eliminate False, as he has the lowest ranking and the worst results of these five players. DarkShad, Tyrant, and K9sbruce have stronger results than anyone else on this list. This leaves dyr, Vinnie, and Xzax for the fourth returning player. dyr's win against Salem will be valued more on PGR V4 since Salem will likely be ranked 2nd, a large jump from his 11th place rank on PGR V3, so dyr would make it on PGR V3 over Vinnie. So this leaves the question, what is valued more, consistent placing and with higher attendance or better wins? I believe dyr's wins over Salem and Abadango will give him the edge over Xzax, although this is not guaranteed and Xzax could very well make it over dyr. DarkShad, Tyrant, and K9sbruce, will make it onto PGR V4, and either Xzax or dyr will also make it on.

Now let's look at the PGR V3 players who will not make PGR V4. We've determined that FOW, Edge, Nietono, ScAtt, Myran, and Ranai will not be making it. Eight more currently ranked players will not make PGR next season. Let's look back at Cloudhead Live for PGR V3 and compare it to the actual PGR V3.

Wrath was the highest ranked player on Cloudhead Live 3 (43) who did not make top 50 on PGR V3. As a reminder, even though Wrath made it in "Area 51", we're not counting that as ranked, so he is not really ranked. Conversely, NAKAT was the lowest ranked player on Cloudhead Live 3 (55) to still make top 50 on PGR V3. To observe all possible candidates, we will be observing 34-65 on the Cloudhead Live 4 for returning PGR players. Nine of the following players will not make PGR V4:

  • NAKAT (34)
  • Locus (35)
  • Choco (37)
  • Raito (38)
  • Javi (42)
  • Shuton (43)
  • Rich Brown (45)
  • Kameme (48)
  • Ned (50)
  • Earth (55)
  • 9B (57)
  • AC (59)
  • Edge (60)
  • T (62)
  • 6WX (63)
  • HIKARU (65)

So of these sixteen players, only seven will make it to PGR V4. Let's look at each player's results and see who we can say for certain will still make it and who will fall off:

NAKAT has had an excellent season, with wins over Larry Lurr and CaptainZack and 13th at EVO. We can say for certain that he will make it onto PGR V4. Locus has had decent tournament results but his only notable win is Mr.E, so he probably won't make PGR V4. Choco barely made it onto PGR V3 despite having no results outside of Japan, and he has won two Umeburas back to back and gotten several strong wins throughout so we can say for certain that he will make it. Raito has wins over Dabuz, VoiD, and ESAM, and has consistent high tournament results so he will definitely make it onto PGR V4. Javi has had decent tournament results and wins over Abadango and CaptainZack, so he has a good chance of making it onto PGR V4, although this cannot be said for certain. Shuton has beaten both ZeRo and MKLeo and participated in the 2GG Championship, so he probably will make it, although we don't know how the 2GG Championship will be weighted in the rankings. Rich Brown's only notable win is against NAKAT, so he probably won't make it onto PGR V4. Kameme has decent placings and wins on KEN and Fatality, so he has a chance of making it although it's not guaranteed. Ned's only notable win is Zinoto, so he probably won't make it onto PGR V4. Earth has wins over Tsu-, Kirihara, and Raito, but hasn't attended many tournaments, so his chances of making it onto PGR V4 are slim. 9B has a 25th place at EVO and wins over Fatality and T, but this probably won't be enough to get him onto PGR V4. AC's win over KEN and 9th place at FE Saga give him a chance to make PGR V4 but it's uncertain. Edge placed 25th at EVO but most of his notable wins are on players who likely won't make PGR V4, so he doesn't have sufficient results to make it onto PGR V4. T has a win over Elegant and placed 11th in the 2GG Championship, but probably will not make it onto PGR V4 unless the 2GG Championship is weighted very high. 6WX has a win over Ally at Smash Con, but this win is overvalued on Cloudhead Live since Ally will be ranked much lower this season, and 6WX has very few tournament results, so it is very unlikely that he will make it onto PGR V4. Finally, HIKARU has some decent wins and a 17th place at S+ tier MKLeo Saga, but this doesn't seem like enough to get him onto PGR V4. Locus, Rich Brown, Ned, Earth, 9B, Edge, T, 6WX, and Hikaru will not make it onto PGR V4.

Finally, let's look at the newcomers to the PGR. We already determined that Mistake, Cosmos, Lima and Zenyou will make it onto PGR V4, and there are ten new confirmed players, so that leaves us with six new players. We'll be observing all of the newcomers over the same 34-65 range that we used to evaluate returning players, and Charliedaking, who is slightly above this range. Let's look at all of the potential newcomers, along with their Cloudhead Live Ranks:

  • Charliedaking (28)
  • tyroy (41)
  • Eon (44)
  • Ryuga (49)
  • Light (51)
  • Luhtie (53)
  • MattyG (54)
  • Aarvark (58)
  • Shoyo James (61)
  • Konga (64)

Six of these ten players will make it onto the PGR V4, so let's run through each player and discuss their likelyhood of making it. Charliedaking has had consistent high placing at several events, such as 5th at 2GG ARMS Saga, 7th at 2GG West Side Saga and 9th at GTX, along with wins over Abadango, Raito, and NAKAT. I didn't list him as guaranteed since many of his other wins were over players who likely won't be on PGR V4, but looking at the results he has, Charliedaking is almost guaranteed a spot on PGR V4. tyroy got 13th at Super Smash Con and 7th at GTX, and has wins over Nairo, CaptainZack, and VoiD, so he will very likely make it onto PGR V4. Eon has decent tournament results, but his only really strong wins are Elegant and Mr.E, so he could make it onto PGR V4, but doesn't make as strong of a case for that ranking as the players discussed above him. Ryuga has traveled more than in previous seasons and has respectable placings at the events he attended later in the season, and he has wins over Larry Lurr and CaptainZack, so he has a good chance of making PGR V4. Light has strong results, his best being 9th at Shine, and has wins over VoiD, Fatality, Mr.E, and NAKAT, so he will probably make it onto PGR V4. Luhtie's placings are decent but nothing special, and has wins over Abadango, Kirihara, and AC, so he could make it, but doesn't have strong enough results to guarantee him a spot. MattyG has some strong tournament placings but his wins over MVD and Kameme, while respectable, aren't amazing, so he isn't as likely to make it onto PGR V4, but still has a chance. Aarvark's placings aren't good enough to carry him, and his wins over JK and falln are noteworthy at best, so we probably won't see him on PGR V4. Shoyo James's 7th place at Smash Con and wins over Zinoto, MVD, and Mr.E might be just enough to get him onto PGR V4. Finally, Pax Invitational 2017 stands as Konga's only really strong tournament, where he placed 5th and got wins over MKLeo and ANTi outside of the initial round robin phase, but this might be just enough to get him ranked. In addition to the aformentioned Mistake, Cosmos, Lima, and Zenyou, Charliedaking, tyroy, Ryuga, Light, Eon, and Konga are the most likely newcomers to PGR V4.

Now that we've determined the new players on the PGR, we can make a reasonably-backed prediction for the PGR V4 rankings. Since we don't have enough additional information to decide the order, I'm going to be ranking the players in the same order on the Cloudhead Live Ranking 4, only I'll be omitting the players that we've eliminated and extending the list to include the ones we've determined will be ranked. Here's my prediction for the Panda Global Rankings V4 Top 50:

  1. ZeRo
  2. Salem
  3. Nairo
  4. MKLeo
  5. Tweek
  6. Larry Lurr
  7. Dabuz
  8. KEN
  9. VoiD
  10. Abadango
  11. Mistake
  12. ESAM
  13. Mr.R
  14. CaptainZack
  15. Komorikiri
  16. Elegant
  17. Ally
  18. WaDi
  19. Cosmos
  20. Samsora
  21. ANTi
  22. Manny
  23. Lima
  24. MVD
  25. Mr.E
  26. Kirihara
  27. JK
  28. Charliedaking
  29. falln
  30. Marss
  31. Zinoto
  32. Tsu-
  33. Fatality
  34. NAKAT
  35. Zenyou
  36. Choco
  37. Raito
  38. K9sbruce
  39. DarkShad
  40. tyroy
  41. Javi
  42. Shuton
  43. Eon
  44. Tyrant
  45. Kameme
  46. Ryuga
  47. Light
  48. dyr
  49. AC
  50. Konga

Let me know if I made any mistakes anywhere. This is all speculation based on the information we've been given so far.
