The Light and the Void: Morally Grey Gone Wrong

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 06:32 AM PST

Ever since the release of Argus and Blizzard's A Thousand Years of War audio drama, I've been seeing more and more people discuss the idea that the Light and the Void are moral equals. It's not hard to see why; Blizzard has clearly been trying to make the dichotomy between the Light and the Void less black and white. And while I'm not necessarily opposed to that, I think it's important that the Light and the Void maintain their identities.

The point of having shades of grey is the shades. Making two opposing forces the same hue doesn't inherently add any complexity to a narrative; worse, it can even detract from it. I think that making the Light and the Void equals is moral greyness at its worst. It's thoughtless ambiguity just for the sake of ambiguity, with little consideration for how it impacts the world and the story. Not only would it require large swaths of lore to be retconned – including the recent, supposedly definitive "Chronicle" series – but I don't see it doing anything positive for the narrative.

With the Light being established as mostly good, and the Void being established as mostly bad, there's a certain level of drama that comes when a character uses these forces in an unexpected way. The Scarlet Crusade, for example, were compelling villains because they were zealots using a force of good inappropriately; their crimes were made even more vile by their using something so pure to commit them. In the same vein, Shadow Priests and Ren'dorei are interesting because they're using something 'bad' for a righteous cause. The Void isn't just dangerous magic, like fel or even the arcane, but is presented as being antithetical to life, sanity, and even 'goodness' itself.

Making them both the same boring, sludge-shade of grey robs these groups – and others like them – of their impact. Xe'ra's extreme measures are a lot less shocking when you start thinking of the Light as authoritarian and intolerant as a rule. Alleria's decision to use the Void is suddenly not so drastic or grim if it's revealed to simply be a misunderstood force, no better or worse than magic already harnessed by countless other heroes.

Reducing the two primordial forces of Creation to being morally irrelevant cheapens the lore, the characters, and the narrative as a whole. Narrative and moral complexity can – and in Warcraft's case, I think it should – come from the way characters use those powers.

Seeting shore = BEST honor farm

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 07:12 AM PST

Seething shore is the new BG coming in BFA which is now available as a brawl mode and is really good for farming honor! You get 150 honor for winning + 40 honor for each azerite you mine. You need to mine 15 azerite to win the game (which usually goes pretty fast) this means that winning a game awards you with 750 honor (+ the honor you get from kills) A game of seething shore is also really quick and only takes about 10 minutes so this is a great way to get your honor level up.

I don't know about you but I'm so hyped for Dark Iron Dwarves, I don't know much about them but they sure look very different than all these ''good guys'' looking alliance races. Would totally fit to play a Warlock with these guys !

Highmountain Tauren Shaman - Moose Glyphs?

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 06:28 AM PST

I really feel like there is a missed opportunity here to add some Highmountain Tauren specific glyphs for Shamans.

Ghost Wolf - Glyph of Ghost Moose

Feral Spirits - Glyph of Feral Moose

Sounds silly but Im a Canadian and any excuse for more moose is good for me.

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 02:13 AM PST

Leveling is by far the most unrewarding iv felt in this game. It feels like 80% of levels i get nothing, no passives or actives. IMO itd be silly of blizzard to not take some of our current artifact passives and add them to the spellbook to improve that experience.

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 07:37 AM PST

I feel that if i dont get a new spell or passive every level or two its just boring. Its such a great feeling getting a new spell or passive, even if its something small like "thrash now slows for X%!" Itd be so amazing id blizz did this.

Suggestion: change the druid forms' names to more generic ones and give each race different animals

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 05:59 AM PST

After the datamined Zandalari druid forms, I beleive it's time to change the names of all of the druid forms. There is no point in having a "Bear Form" where you actually transform into a f*cking bulbasaur. The names may be:

  • Feral Form (Cat for Night elfs, Wolf for Worgens, etc.)

  • Guardian Form (Bear for NE's, some new type of Bear for Taurens, etc)

  • Travel form (as it is now)

The main point is to generalize the form name, thus giving much more flexibility when creating new animal forms and also making it less confusing for new players.

[SPOILER] New Undead/Forsaken Walking Animations (New Orc Animation link in comments)

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 10:35 AM PST

These druid animations are CRISP!

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 01:35 AM PST

Hey I just started playing this game, I made a gnome Hunter. His cobra shot is a little sperm cell running along a green racetrack. To even shoot the damn thing I gotta take me socks off.

Capped at 20 for the starter edition and made a worgen Druid. My my, I'll tell yea. I'm getting shot with cupids arrows over here. The solar beam ability looks CRISP! And I summon a moon and it shoots a certified kill-a-thingymuwat-laser down upon any naysayer I target!

By god, crisp as hell. I'm enjoyin' it. Runs like a jackrabbit.

The Seething Shore might be the best battleground they've ever designed

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 09:39 AM PST

I've played a few games on the new BG so far and I really think this might be the most modern WoW PVP has ever felt. The dynamic element of the objectives, the Battle Royale influences with the respawning and adjustable "spawn" locations. It just felt really high energy and far less scripted or rehearsed the way BGs like AV, IOC, Strand, or WSG can tend to feel.

Really, really love it.

mythicpl.us, a year and some change later

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 10:45 AM PST

Hey everyone, long time no talk.

First and foremost I want to thank every single one of you that has contributed to the site; either by comments on Reddit, messages on Discord, issues on Github, or plain old email. Without your contributions this site would have been dead and useless pretty quickly. Special shoutout to the folks at raider.io for enabling me to use their API early on (thanks Jah).

I'm a pretty shitty writer so I'll try to make this brief.

  • In just over a year, we've amassed almost 2,000,000 unique pageviews.
  • We've got just over 450,000 unique users.
  • Thanks to some outstanding work from amarques, we now have Portugeuse and Spanish translations available.
  • Most impressive, there hasn't been a massive dropoff in traffic.

I quit playing the game last April, but thanks to all the contributors the site has stayed relevant for new and returning players looking to get in to mythic plus.

This post kinda sounds like a farewell or something, but it couldn't be any further from that. I plan on keeping the site up for the long forseeable future (I would rather die than let some domain squatter pick it up and fill it with ads or something), including updates for Battle For Azeroth (I'll probably end up playing again when the expansion rolls around). With that said, I set up a Discord server so we can keep tabs on upcoming changes, etc.

There's no need to join it now as I think pretty much everything is set in stone for the rest of this expansion, but I think it'll be a helpful resource in the future.

To reinforce how great the World of Warcraft community is: in a couple of weeks I'm travelling out to Colorado to be in a friend's wedding. I met him almost 12 years ago now on World of Warcraft.

Thank you all again, keep being awesome.
