Showerthought: Since we got a portable Ocarina of Time 13 years after the original, I wonder if one day, we’ll get a portable Breath of the Wild!

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 06:06 AM PST

I legit had this thought, while showering, for a good five seconds or so.

This is what I get for getting the Wii U version.

One year after the anniversary, do you feel this game is still the legendary masterpiece?

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 09:27 PM PST

Or do you feel its flaws hindered what could have been a perfect game?

Should I install the Master Trials?

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 07:39 AM PST

I bought the first DLC a while ago but I was too worried to install it because I haven't seen and done everything in the base game. What actually happens to the game when I install the DLC? Will my original save file be affected?

Many thanks.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: I think a Link to the Past is one of, if not the worst, console Zelda game.

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 06:14 AM PST

I don't really see people talking about a Link to the Past very much other than saying it is "one of the best Zelda games". It was one of the last console games I got around to playing and I finished it recently. While there are a lot of subjective enjoyment aspects to the game that will be different for everyone (like I have a lot of nostalgia for Ocarina of Time so it's difficult for me to take an objective view of that game) I think there are a great deal of frustrating game design aspects that really drag a Link to the Past down, and I'll list the biggest ones I noticed.

  1. Combat. Returning to top down style like Zelda 1, you would think it would be just as straight forward by only being able to look in four directions. But the hit box on the sword is very inconsistent and hitting enemies sometimes feels like a guessing game of whether your position is correct or not. By contrast, Zelda 1 and 2 had pretty consistent hit or not hit rules which were much less frustrating and inconsistent.

  2. Level design and puzzles. This is the part that really gets me, Link to the Past relies way too much on cheesy physics and just plain bad save spots when going through the the dungeons. A lot of puzzles in Link to the Past require a great deal of backtracking if you miss one element of what you need, with no quick way to get around the dungeon. For instance, in the ice temple there's a block puzzle where you drop a block from the floor above you to get a switch turned on. But to reach the block you have to climb back up through two previous floors! I had the puzzle solved, but in order to actually implement my solution I had to trudge through several layers of previously solved rooms, which I found to be a persistent element in most of the dungeons. Not being able to immediately test your puzzle solution is not good design in my opinion, and most other Zelda games handle this much better.

  3. Bosses and save points. With the exception of the Helmasaur King, I found most of the bosses to be generally boring or frustrating to deal with. To add on to the problem of backtracking, if you die to a boss you basically have to walk back through most of the dungeon just to get to him again (which can take awhile depending on the dungeon). Plus there are two bosses that are particularly terrible, the Fire Ice turtle and the Ice temple boss. WHY is there not spare magic in the ice temple boss room? One of the absolute least fun things is to run out of resources mid fight and then be forced to let the boss kill you because you were missing one more fire rod strike. That's just bad. And the Turtle boss was frustrating because you need both the fire and ice rod to defeat him, but up until that point there has been no reason to have the ice rod. You could easily have missed that item going through the game only to reach a near end game boss and realize you don't have the ice rod?

These are a few of my major complaints with the game and why I consider a Link to the Past the worst Zelda game I've played. I have played every console Zelda game and most of the handhelds but I consider the hand helds and console Zelda's to different standards. This is my genuine opinion of Link to the Past, I'm not trying to be a contrarian here but I was surprised with how much I disliked about a Link to the Past, and I wanted to share this opinion because I feel like this game gets a free "nostalgia" pass.

Finally getting BoTW on Thursday.

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 05:37 PM PST

I could not be more excited. I just (like literally 45 mins ago) beat Wind Waker (GC) and WW is now on my top 5 zelda games. That game was incredible. And I've been looking forward to playing BoTW since it's release. I've never been so hyped for a game in my life!

That being said. Does anyone have any starter tips? (without spoiling anything obviously)

What's your favorite song in BOTW?

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 05:45 PM PST

For me a lot of the songs in BOTW were okay but Attack On Divine Beast Vah Ruta is the best song in BOTW. It's so exhilarating it makes me feel powerful like I'm about to change the world, yet at the same time it's got a soothing Melody that increases in power.

Any one want an Anniversary bundle for Switch?

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:59 PM PST

I really wish Nintendo would release an anniversary bundle of Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight princess. They have the Wii U versions of Wind Waker and Twilight princess. I wouldn't mind them just using the 3ds versions of Oot and MM just get rid of the touch pad stuff.

It's probably a pipe dream but that would be so great since Wind Waker and Twilight Hd were kind of wasted on the Wii U

Is Zelda or Midna the Twilight Princess?

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 09:52 PM PST

I'm about halfway through this current play through of Twilight Princess HD (and although this isn't my first play through of it, its been since it originally came out on GameCube so I totally forgot what happens thought the game) without giving out spoilers is there anyway we can civilly discuss which one is the REAL Twilight Princess? I personally want to say its Midna but I honestly am scared of being wrong lol

The Legend of Zelda - In Zelda: Breath of the Wild you can view large thunderstorms at a distance. This is a very good example of how well Nintendo handles their software.

How did you feel about the inclusion of Twinrova and Ganon in the Oracle linked ending?

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 09:18 AM PST

The Oracle linked ending was the first of three times that a game was "hijacked by Ganon" (the other two being FSA and TP). How did you feel about this plot twist the first time you played?
