Hero Discussion of the Day: Anti-Mage (November 28th, 2017)

Anti-Mage

People don't apply the name 'Anti-Mage' to someone for no reason. His passive Mana Break attack allows him to deal extra damage and cripple a caster's mana supply. With a great understanding of the spiritual realm, he becomes more resilient against magical attacks using his Spell Shield, along with the ability to Blink across short distances for superb maneuverability. Seeking out weary casters, he uses Mana Void to inflict immense damage for high amounts of missing mana. Although he will be at a natural disadvantage to casters early on, as his powers grow, there is none better suited for bringing the greatest of spell casters down to their knees.

Lore

The monks of Turstarkuri watched the rugged valleys below their mountain monastery as wave after wave of invaders swept through the lower kingdoms. Ascetic and pragmatic, in their remote monastic eyrie they remained aloof from mundane strife, wrapped in meditation that knew no gods or elements of magic. Then came the Legion of the Dead God, crusaders with a sinister mandate to replace all local worship with their Unliving Lord's poisonous nihilosophy. From a landscape that had known nothing but blood and battle for a thousand years, they tore the souls and bones of countless fallen legions and pitched them against Turstarkuri. The monastery stood scarcely a fortnight against the assault, and the few monks who bothered to surface from their meditations believed the invaders were but demonic visions sent to distract them from meditation. They died where they sat on their silken cushions. Only one youth survived--a pilgrim who had come as an acolyte, seeking wisdom, but had yet to be admitted to the monastery. He watched in horror as the monks to whom he had served tea and nettles were first slaughtered, then raised to join the ranks of the Dead God's priesthood. With nothing but a few of Turstarkuri's prized dogmatic scrolls, he crept away to the comparative safety of other lands, swearing to obliterate not only the Dead God's magic users--but to put an end to magic altogether.

Passive

Burns an opponent's mana on each attack. Mana Break deals 50% of the mana burned as damage to the target.

  • Physical damage

  • The damage is directly added to Anti-Mage's attack damage.

  • Anti-Mage can lifesteal off of the damage dealt by Mana Break, however it cannot crit or cleave.

  • The damage can be reduced with e.g. Enfeeble or Static Link.

  • Effectively increases a Anti-Mage's attack damage by 14/20/26/32 against units which have enough mana to burn.

  • Applies the mana loss first, and then the damage.

  • Does not work against allied units when attacking them.

  • Does not stack with Diffusal Blade's Manabreak.

A modified technique of the Turstarkuri monks' peaceful ways is to turn magical energies on their owner.

 

Blink

Short distance teleportation that allows Anti-Mage to move in and out of combat.

  • Blink disjoints projectiles upon cast.

  • Does not blink for the full distance when targeting closer than the max distance.

  • When targeting beyond the max blink distance, Anti-Mage will blink for the max distance towards the targeted point.

  • The illusion created by the talent is created on Anti-Mage's original cast location, facing the direction he blinked to.

    • The illusion cannot act, so it is completely uncontrollable.
    • The illusion is not invulnerable, and can be attacked and killed normally.
    • The illusion automatically attacks the first enemy coming within its acquisition range.
    • It uses default auto-attack rules, meaning it always attacks the closest enemy, and does not stick to the first target it attacks.
    • When no enemies are nearby, the illusion just idles in place, only moving when getting aggroed.
    • The illusion ignores the player's auto-attack settings and is always in auto-attack mode.
    • When Enchanting the illusion, it still dies within 10 seconds, despite its timer being visually increased.

In his encounter with the Dead Gods, Anti-Mage learned the value of being elusive.

  • Stacks multiplicatively with other sources of magic resistance.

  • Increases Anti-Mage's total base magic resistance to 40%/47.5%/55%/62.5% (Talent 58.75%/66.25%/73.75%/81.25%).

  • The spell block and reflection from Aghanim's Scepter follow the same rules as Spellblock and Echo Shell.

    • Only goes on cooldown upon successfully blocking, but not when just reflecting a spell (e.g. Toss).
    • If Anti-Mage has Linken's Sphere, or the Spellblock buff transferred from an ally, they only block spells while Spell Shield is on cooldown.
    • If Anti-Mage has the Echo Shell buff from Lotus Orb, Echo Shell only reflects spells while Spell Shield is on cooldown.
    • The Spell Shield does not reflect spells which come from Echo Shell (reflected spells are not reflected again).
    • The effect uses a regular cooldown, and is therefore affected by all cooldown manipulating effects.
    • Unlike Lotus Orb, does not reflect Phantom Strike and Blink Strike. They do get blocked still.

Years of meditation and obsession with revenge have hardened Anti-Mage's skin against mystical opponents.

 

Mana Void

Ultimate

For each point of mana missing by the target unit, damage is dealt to it and surrounding enemies. The main target is also mini-stunned.

  • Magical damage

  • The targeting reticule must be centered over an enemy unit.

  • The damage is calculated based on the primary target's mana, but applied to all enemies within the radius.

  • Only the primary target gets stunned.

  • Can be cast on units without a mana pool, applying the mini-stun only.

  • Plays a sound effect during the cast time, which is audible to everyone.

After bringing enemies to their knees, Anti-Mage punishes them for their use of the arcane arts.

My brother is studying jazz composition, and I think he could make a great music pack for Dota 2. It might take some convincing, but if there is interest it would make it a lot easier.

Edit: it would probably be either 50s swing or modern jazz fusion, I can never tell with him until halfway through, but I can say, with utmost certainty, that it will be good. If I can get him to do it.

Downside of new ranks get too much attention

Ok here are the downsides/the downside of the new ranks:

-> Very high tier mmr players get matched with lower tier -> game quality decreases for a short amount of time. (Before they created smurfs, because finding match took too long, because of too small player pool...:thinking: )

The problem is, that this affects only the very high tier regions, but they get a lot of attention through twitch, twitter, etc.

I think for the wide range of players the new system is a much better place with less tilt, faster climbing and new challenges (seasons). Just give it a few weeks to get rid of the starting problems and adjusting the mmr ranges.

I just want to say thank you for the new system and raise a voice for everybody who likes it, because those players probably dont have thousands of twitter followers.

  • I don't judge how this new mmr system works for other brackets ,because i didn't play there yet, but judging only from my personal experience for 6k+ players it is total garbage.
  • Put lower quality of games aside,because it will fix itself in few months when players mmr will be verified, but I found new system completely unrewarding.I got no urge to play ,as I once did,winning or losing became less exciting and I generally feel people care and try less (at least in my games).
  • Further more, the main thing which should motivate 6k + mmr players to play is nr. on rank which is completely bugged.My rank in profile didn't appear even once , after I met all requirements,im not on leaderboard (where i should be in 100-200place ) since second day of the season.I even changed my profile to public because i thought it may be the reason behind but I played 20 more games,2 days passed and im still not there.
  • Now they removed mmr from leaderboard so I can't even check which position I should be and it is slowly killing my motivation to play.
  • The most frustrating is fact I can't compare to other players in my team so if I m put in like average 800-1000 rank place game,my teammates see neither:rank and mmr and steal my role.You can say I should adapt etc. but it would never happen in old system.
  • I don't wanna sound like some elitist, but I really dont understand why there is single star bracket for all 5.7-10k players, while on lower mmr every star is only like 140 mmr. So unrewarding and disapointing from my point of view.

I've had a rough past couple of years. Parents died to drug addiction, Fiance left me to chase better things, joined the army to have a decent life, but the one thing that has always provided me an escape was Dota 2. I see too many posts on here about how Dota is ruining lives, well today it saved one. Not one single family member called me to wish me happy birth day or hell even post on Facebook, but I'll always have Dota 2 mates that pull through.

Thanks for being such an awesome Dota 2 community. The content on here is what keeps me going
