A personal statement, things that need to be said - former Iceberg CGO

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 09:23 AM PST

I don't know where to begin. First of all, I'm not the CEO of Iceberg, that would be Daname. I was in charge of MOBA/Strategy games whereas D1s was the head of FPS. I'm also writing this on my own will as I've been out of Iceberg for about a month now. Uncommon practise certainly, but I feel great responsibility to say something personally, not as voice of Iceberg. There's probably gonna be a statement from Iceberg later on, I don't really communicate with them.

1.

I apologized to Kurtis a couple of days ago but also today as well. Objectively it's not my job to apologize to him, my job was nothing but bring in teams which I did. I feel guilty because I broke my own principle twice which ended up getting Kurtis' team signed for an organization that would ultimately not pay them and potentially set them back big time. They have needed better equipment and a team house for so long now which is obvious from their struggles. I signed the team knowing the funding was still not ready. I vowed to myself that the team will not be signed until I saw money on company accounts and the company was informed of this as well. I was told it would be done the following week and I chose to believe, but upon realizing there are further delays, I did not inform the team thus breaking my principles for the second time. Instead I chose to believe that it would be potentially unnecessary drama as I was promised the things would be figured out within a week, max two. Kurtis called me about a week ago saying they're still unpaid so I let him know everything. So once again - Kurtis, David, Kartik, Ravi and Jonathan, if you're reading this, my sincere apologies for getting you into this position. Anger and disappointment doesn't begin to describe what I feel, without even trying to imagine what Kurtis and David feel having put in so much work and faith on their end to make this happen.

2.

It took six months of hard work, six months of faith, believing in others as much as myself, six months of struggle with health and fight against colleagues, family, friends. My war was maybe too noble, the goal being to turn esports slowly away from the state it's in right now, to legitimize it, to get it out of dogmatic state. So many conversations with investors and sports teams who still believe that esports is just teenagers playing arcades in their moms' basements. To get the world to understand it but also bring some order without usurping its core essence - creative freedom and anarchy in its purest and least aggressive state. To make the world understand what Dendi can do with a keyboard is equal to what Kyrie Irving, Francesco Totti or Tom Brady can do with a ball. Six months of fighting for justice for players, transparency, honor, morals, six months of fighting to create the absolute opposite of the biggest/ugliest orgs in esports (no, really, you can't imagine how disgusting it is behind the scenes) - and in the end I helped create exactly that. Six months of striving towards ideals set by past experiences was not only wasted but resulted in tarnished reputation, broken relationships and dissipated trust.

I'm just one of you, just one guy who was given a lucky chance to work in esports and I wanted to fight for a change. Many of you only hope for even a chance to fight this war to establish esports. I'm not writing this to justify what happened, I won't point fingers or assign blame. I'm merely apologizing for losing the battle and potentially setting the industry back through the consequences of our actions, if even half a step. Deep apology to the players, the fans, the organizations out there doing things the proper way. Additionally - I'm sorry, Canada. This is in no way a reflection of your country, you deserve so much better.

Failure can only make you stronger, but it does make you wonder if honesty, humanism, morals and self sacrifice can get you anywhere. I thought it could, I believed we were building a flag ship that would expose shady orgs and lead the way, but people lost sight of the goal, couldn't see the sky anymore and lost their ideals. But you can never for a moment lose who you are because that's when you lose the battle and you can't win the war by losing battles, not unless you're Kutuzov.

Feel free to PM me regarding anything. Even if you want to just flame.

2B a mystery with a Dream. Q&A Included!

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 10:11 AM PST

So as you might know or not know I'm 2B The 6k roam with anything Mongorian. Seen a lot on Waga and Sing stream. When i'm playing Dota I usally play what I want not what the "meta" tells me to play so I usally end up with things like my Waifu Magina as a roamer and other non conventional heroes on said position.

THe way it is for me right now is really wierd. I'm a 18 years old Gymnsaium Student and got very little budget to use each month and the place I live in now(my partens home) got horrible internet. Like I tried to put out some content/stream and trying to give something to the community of my own but it was just frustraiting trying to do so that I've ended up giving up on it till now.

In the current place I live in there is nothing I can do about my internet speed which made me come to the solution that maybe getting into a City appartment near to my Gymnsaium might be the way to be able to stream and living my dream. Giving out Dota 2 Content and making people happy. I want to be a comedian and make people happy but it's just not possible in a good way right now. and the Question I'm about to ask is something I just want to know since I talked with my father and If i can finance most of the costs for an appartment I can do it.

My Question: Are there any of you that enjoy what you've seen of me so far and what i'm trying to be in the online world?

I do wierd stuff and try to make it work. I'm alwasys cheerful and happy to spend my time playing Dota and I want to share that and come up with new Metas things that can work but people do not want to be seen. It means a lot to me when people try to think in a diffrent way about how Dota should be played and I want to be part of that change in a bigger way than showing up on top rank games and being stacked with streamers(do not get me wrong I enjoy the time i can spend with them but I want to be able to do the same it really is my dream)

The reason why I ask if you enjoy my content is aswell in connection to if you would want to watch me play Dota(and maybe some other games too) and maybe if you're willing for it. would want to support me with a small pledge to make this happen. I want to make the Calculations if I can pay enough and live in an appartment where there's actually good internet to stream dota from.

I really appreciated if you just read this, I know this is a project that I try to plan in a very Fuzzy way. I will ask any Questions regarding what I want to achieve or other things you are curious about anything regarding anything really LUL.

A dream always needs to start somewhere right? I say mine starts here if right or wrong it does not matter only the way matters at this point.

Damage over time feels weak

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 05:46 AM PST

Outside of the early game, DOT damage seems pretty ineffective now that every hero has nearly 10 health regen per second come midgame. Does anyone else feel this?

Questions concerning Windranger

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 11:07 AM PST

Hi,

I would wish to ask some questions concerning windranger to people who are better then me, which should be the case for most people here.

1: Why is Windranger picked so incredibly rarely in an offlane role in professional Dota?

My reasoning for her being a decent offlaner is as follows: A) If the offlane is a 1on1, she can defeat plenty of carries in lane. B) With proper positioning and without a support in lane who dedicatedly counters her (like Bane or Skywrath), she will hold her own in most 1on2s. Against somewhat popular safelane setups like AM and CM she can even get plenty of doublekills. C) due to Powershot, she can still get some farm out of 1on3s fairly safely. She can also use powershot to interfere with pulls, stacking and stack farming. D) She is not completely trivial to gank due to having an inbuild escape with windrun. She becomes pretty tough to gank if she aquires a forcestaff. E) she has pretty good kill potential on the enemy mid (or anyone else actually) with her Ult and a Javelin.

2: Why do people favor Maelstrom/Mjoelnir over an MKB to such an extent on her? I heavily favor the flexibility that the MKB buildup gives. Just one Javelin is sufficient to make WRs Ult a potentially deadly threat to nearly everything, so one can either complete the MKB and get an AGHs depending on the overall situation. With Maelstrom, you have to finish the receipe in order to benefit (you can divert from the Hammer into a BKB or a desolater, but I am not really a fan of deso and you dont really want a very early BKB either). Another issue I have with Maelstrom is that you end up pushing the lane with just opportunistic rightclicks on the enemy carry, which doesnt happen with 2 Javelins. My Opinion is also that there are many enemy heroes where MKB is clearly better, while there are less heroes where I would prefer a Maelstrom. I find it iffy to use Maelstrom vs a PL, because you have to Ulti the right lancer which can be iffy, and similiar issues apply to CK. I also like that MKB is not flashy. In a teamfight, people tend to notice whom you are focusfiring with a Maelstrom, which paints a bigger target on your back and visually and accustically alerts your target. MKB is kind of stealthy in comparison, and easier to overlook in a chaotic engagement.

3: It would appear that very few people purchase an early orb of venom on her. At least in my bracket, I often have situations in which a support attack me, I rightclick him back, turn on windrun before the first projectile hits me and he starts to back off. If I have an orb of venom, he will (unless it is a very speedy support or has early boots) be slower then me, often allowing me to get in additional free rightclicks on him. The extra 10ish (factoring in enemy regen etc.) rightclick damage due to the poison arent too shabby either.

Support lina viable now?

With the talents making magic Lina more viable, could we see support Lina as a viable pick for when she doesn't get a good match up mid?

Wraith King Skeleton Build improvement ideas

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 01:32 PM PST

So with the frog incessantly attempting to make the skeletron build viable, I figured I'd have my go at concocting up a interesting take on how to fit the build into a draft. I wan't to see how other people would view what would be a rather radical change in how wraith king is played given my 2 suggested talent changes.

lv 20: Change 2x skeleton spawn to 100% skeleton physical damage immunity.

lv 25: Change 25% vampiric aura to 2x skeleton spawn.

If it isn't obvious what I'm aiming for here, I want to find a place in drafting in which you could consider picking up a wraith king as a strong counter to a poorly executed draft.

Most likely being picked up in the final pick, this would allow a team to push with little to almost no risk under certain draft conditions. Rarely if ever is a draft created where no aoe magic damage is picked, but in such a rare situation, WK would become a fantastic last pick, and would force the opponent to pick up magic damage items such as Shiva's or Maelstrom simply to defend their base.

The main problem I see with this is the duration that the skeletons exist, and I figure, if a change like this were to be implemented, their duration would have to be nerfed massively.

What are your thoughts on these changes? Is it a good way to find a spot in a draft for WK? Is it too cowardly a tactic for such a manly hero? Any changes or suggestions you would make to these talents, or to find him a spot in a draft?

How to Close Out

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 12:53 AM PST

So here's the deal, I'm new to the carry role. I have played pos5 for about 90% of my games, and 10% offlane or roam. I think I have all the basics down for carry I just haven't played it that much. So here ME: Juggernaut farms and farms, I end up playing a 72:46 game with almost 800gpm, but fail to close out the game. Is it my technical skill that causes this loss, or is the rest of my team underperforming? I know there are always things I can do to get better and I'd like an opinion on how exactly to do that.

Were my item timings bad? I'm not really sure what the timings are supposed to be... anyways any help is appreciated. I am totally lost after 50 minutes.

How does Motivation Affect your games

Posted: 28 Feb 2018 08:47 PM PST

I've found that if I force myself to play and is only playing for the sake of playing I get demoralized in game making me more prone to tilt because I lacked the motivation to play.

What do you think about beastmaster as a pos 5 support?

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 04:28 AM PST

He has an amazing slow level one, plus some good damage, a great aura, and an amazing ultimate. I believe that played as a pos 5 support can allow him to do a lot, maybe even more than a pos 3. Beastmaster is not greedy at all, he doesnt NEED any item at all, he wants some levels, but gettng level 6/7 is what really makes him strong. Starting off with some ms item and takling the boar will allow him to set up kills with the really good slow, and also trade hits really well. Later on he can go for a blink/forcestaff, and stuff like that, allowing for a little more greedy lineup without dedicating him to the offlane. Thoughts?

When is Hood on PL Viable?

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 04:28 AM PST

I've seen Reso and Gorgc do it in quite a few pubs, but looking through Dotabuff I see it barely ever being built and not even against heroes like Tinker. When should you go for it, and against whom?

Phantom Lancer players--some questions about PL mechanics

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 02:54 PM PST

I like this hero a lot, but I feel like my understanding of him is very poor. Mechanically in particular. My questions revolve around spell usage, micro, laning, and overall strategy.

Spell usage: 1) Phantom Rush. I do not have a good feel for this ability at all. I understand on some level that it's a gap closing ability, but how exactly am I supposed to use it? It tends to fire on accident whenever it's off cooldown, and because I'm not thinking about it, half the time I end up issuing another command (usually move) and end up canceling it. How do I get the most out of this ability? Also, the +30 agility seems almost trivial since it only lasts a small amount of time after the rush. Am I supposed to think of it as a burst damage ability? Is this what the battlefury build is about, using phantom rush as a pseudo-blink with an extra +30 cleave damage on a creep wave? Should I be manta summoning during the rush so I can get an extra +30 agi on my manta illusions? I almost wish I could toggle the ability off (I know you can toggle it off now) and then manually cast it.

2) Doppleganger. Is this basically a built-in manta style? I know there are some micro tricks with the bright dopple illusion to throw enemies off. Is there more to it than that? I have seen some pros use Doppleganger to jump over cliffs, particularly when farming jungle or escaping from teamfights.

Micro: 1) How many control groups do you use for PL? I'm guessing you need 5: select hero, select all other units, select ALL units, control group 1 for the dopple illusion, and control group 2 for manta illusions. Also, aside from using the dopple illusion to confuse enemies, are there other tricks for the different types of illusions?

Laning: 1) I think of PL as a strong laner because of built-in regen and good base damage. Is there anything special you do to mitigate the high damage variance? Do you use animation cancelling when last hitting? Overall he seems to have a below-average animation, do you agree?

2) When farming waves, I tend to miss a lot of last hits unnecessarily when all the illusions get summoned. I basically lose my discipline. Is there a particular way you micro the illusions when you're pushing a lane, or just passively farming a lane? Is there a certain order you try to kill the creeps in?

Overall strategy 1) Can someone explain the premise of the battlefury build now that the cleave has been removed from illusions? Is it just a passive farming item, enabled because it's OP currently, and you have that phantom rush+bonus agi+cleave working as a pseudo-blink on a 4s cooldown? I find it hard to use this way, because I tend to screw up the rush itself, and second, I can't phantom rush to a jungle camp I don't have vision of.

2) Also, at what item progression do you start farming the jungle? With the general build, wand+aquila+treads-->diffusal, I find I can clear jungle camps fast thanks to mana burn but I often don't have enough health regen to sustain.

tl;dr: I am 1.2k and have a very bad understanding of how to play PL. Please help. https://www.dotabuff.com/players/94465695

What did I do wrong here?

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 11:03 AM PST

https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3758953781

I was the ES, and yes I know my friend went mid Lion for some unknown reason and his items were kinda questionable.

However, the early game seemed ok - me and Lioon were able to put tremendous pressure on Invoker and killed him multiple times, but somewhere in the mid game things started to fall apart and I don't know where. I guess I played around mid a bit too much and didn't help the sidelanes at all? I just felt like the side lanes didn't need much help and pressuring Invoker to force their supports mid would be the best play for the laning stage. I do believe that around the mid game all of my team split up a bit too much and ended up taking bad fights which threw the game.

If anyone would like to point out what major mistakes I made during this game, it would be really nice :D

Why does pressing Hold Position not cancel the attacks of other units?

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 06:57 PM PST

When I press it, the hero completely stops, but the illusions, Druid bear, and Familiars for example only hold their attacks, and then start attacking again.

Stupid low-MMR question of the day: Dealing with Zeus Aghs?

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 03:11 PM PST

OK, challenge time: Enemy Zeus got his Aghanims Scepter. You get ONE chance to tell your team ONE simple instruction. "When Zeus drops his nimbus, do X." What would you tell them?

Remember, this is low MMR, so assume no counterpicks unless by luck, and that 2-3 people don't have basic knowledge of what the ability does.

At my level, if there is a Zeus on either team, basically as soon he gets Aghs the game is over. One 5-man push after another, Zeus throws up a Nimbus over whatever area has to be defended, standing in it and fighting gets you killed, attacking it first gets you killed by the other heroes, avoiding it means you lose the objective, defending means you lose the objective and get teamwiped and lose more objectives.

It seems like heroes that work well against him seem to be either the extreme splitpushers (Lycan, Brood, AM) or the ones who jump on the back line and beat the dogshit of someone (Huskar, TA, SS), but all of those are rare, even rarer to see one played well. You do get a PA pretty often.

Anyway, like I said, knowing what there is to work with, what one thing would you either tell your team to play around this, or do to win the game yourself?

edit: also, if you see a Zeus picked on the enemy team, what would you pick?

No more laning now

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 06:56 PM PST

I noticed in a lot of my games that people just forgo laning and go straight to ganking, like 4 heroes ganking and just their mid laning. Can't even jungle now cause you have to help lanes, kinda like LOL. Any thoughts?

What do you consider the hardest hero to play?

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 12:19 AM PST

I know this sounds like a very random and vague question but I really wanted to ask someone this so I guess I'll just leave it here. This is regardless of position/role, or whether the hero is in meta rn. So far here are my thoughts -

  • Invoker - Easily the first hero to come to mind, given how insanely demanding he is in terms of mechanics.

  • Spectre - Kind of an odd one, but I'm putting her in here just because of the fact that she literally doesn't do jack for 20 mins. Most other "weak" laning carries still have some form of utility (Morph has mobility and attribute shift, AM has mobility and mana burn, etc.) whereas all Spectre can do is slow you by 12%. Or maybe I'm just missing something.

  • Chen/Visage/Meepo/Arc - I put these together because I feel like the general idea behind all these heroes is the same, i.e. you are controlling multiple units each of which can cast their own spells(/items), which would make them a bit harder than regular illusion heroes.

  • Storm Spirit - I guess he deserves a mention since, in the words of Blitz, Storm is one of the hardest heroes in the game due to the amount of mana management he requires. I think its safe to say he's THE most mana hungry hero in the game, and knowing how much you can do and what plays you can make at various stages of the game is something that takes a lot of time and practice. This is not even considering the pretty high skill ceiling he has in terms of mechanics - you can dodge a lot of stuff due to how Ball Lightning works provided you are fast on your fingers and careful with turn rates.

Thoughts? If there's any other hero that you feel is the hardest, do mention it.

Should I stay in bot matches?

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 01:29 PM PST

So I just started playing this week and I'm really struggling in unranked. I'm not entirely new to mobas (played some league and hots in the past), but still sub 30 hours in this game. In every match so far I've been getting flamed hard for not knowing everything about heroes or just playing bad. One match some dudes reported me for losing midlane calling me a feeder. Not like I was trying to suck the dude was just better than me. I'd play co-op with bots to practice more, but I can't even get a match, and solo with bots really isn't good practice. Is it wrong of me to be playing in pubs yet? Am I wrong to think unranked matches should be for casual practice? Should I just ignore the flamers or do I need to go back to bots?

How to play Death Prophet?

Storm Spirit itemization order

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 04:42 AM PST

Few questions about Storm:

1) Early items:

  • Do you still buy bottle on storm or just spend all your money on clarity? like on 90% of the other midders rn.

  • Magic Wand must have?

  • What about Soul Ring?

2) First Major item?

  • Bloodstone + Orchid / Kaya?

  • Kaya + Orchid

  • Orchid + Kaya

  • Kaya + Bloodstone?

  • When should i build which item?

Thank you!

Hand of Midas in 2018?

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 12:59 PM PST

I've been on an AA kick and remember buying midas on this hero was popular. I did it in one game and it just felt... weak.

Come to think of it, I can't think of any hero lately that wants midas except maybe invoker, and with tomes even that is debatable. Is this a dead item? Games just feel too fast now, and every time I try picking it up it just feels like the good old Hand of -25 MMR.

Linkens vs Aghs on AM?

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 12:38 AM PST

So I'm a little confused on the big difference of when to choose aghs or when to choose linkens on Anti-mage. I get that linkens gives better stats, gives health and mana regen over aghs giving just base hp and mana, and can be used on allies, but linkens costs almost 1k more (which I know isn't a lot for an AM), and aghs does the same block as linkens plus reflects it, which can be great against rupture, stuns, miss chances, eul's, and certain ult's like Lich ult or necro ult.

I know that sometimes it's better to go with linkens when you're dealing with things like sb charge, tb ult, duel, or maybe you have a great initiator that could really benefit from the linkens active, but I just feel like other than that you are better off going with the aghs because if the move isn't that game changing you are probably good with just bkb and manta instead of either, and if it is game changing enough to warrant them then having it reflect back would be better.

Is my mindset right here, or am I missing something big, like that extra +5 stats and the regen is more important that the reflect (which I get that I potentially CAN be, but I feel would be rare)?

Tinker itemization vs pl

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 05:20 AM PST

As a tinker in the late game what's the best itemization against a pl with mkb?

My lasers don't work with him and so doesn't my rockets to his enemy teams.

Match of madness is so so against his heart.
