True Gaming I have a hard time getting immersed in single player games |
| I have a hard time getting immersed in single player games Posted: 06 Aug 2018 01:05 PM PDT I keep trying to play single player stories due to critical acclaim and popularity but honestly.. I just don't care about it. It really sucks because I want to enjoy AC: Origins, Far Cry 5, God of War, TLoU, Skyrim, etc. Now let me clear, I'm not trying to rag on these games. They're all great in their own merit. But for the life of me I just don't really care what happens to the protagonist and why something happens in the story or doesn't happen. I'm getting older and feel like I'm supposed to enjoy these experiences because I see a lot of older people stepping away from multiplayer saying they don't have time to get good or compete with others. But I feel like that statement is hypocritical because I'm single player games like I mentioned above, you still have to devote a lot of time to beating the game or completing various side quests or even just wondering through casually: it all still amounts to time being used. | Posted: 06 Aug 2018 01:20 PM PDT The long button press. I have mixed feelings about this modern development in gaming controls. When done well it can fit multiple actions to a crowded controller button, but when implemented poorly, it makes a game feel sluggish and unresponsive. First the good. A long button press can you feel like you're doing something during a loot animation. It also allows an action to be interrupted, which can make looting a chest when there are enemies around to be a risky decision. It can also add another action to a button that's already used for something else. Perhaps a quick press does an attack, but a long press does a heavier attack. This is mostly seen on the analog triggers, but can work well on any button. This can give a rhythmic flow to combat. Now the bad. It's mostly used as an contextual interact button. Meaning that every time I want to talk to an NPC, loot something, use a switch, etc. it takes an extra half second or so. Now the game feels sluggish. When I press a button, I expect it to do something. If there's no threat or risk to my character standing still for that fraction of a second during the press, it feels pointless. Most games do them wrong. A lot of times they are included because they are aping a design choice from another game without understanding it. It's become kind of a modern game design practice that is only there to feel modern and in most cases is simply a waste of time for the player. How do you feel about the modern button press?
