When do I press buttons?

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 09:14 AM PST

I've played SF for a long time now and am just realising that although my execution is fine and I have a general idea regarding my gameplan, I often get counter hit/crush countered or just make bad choices re buttons.

Do you find frame data is the only reliable way to know when is a good time to attack vs block vs backdash etc.?

Character passes worth it?

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 03:05 AM PST

Hey all,

I am interested in buying all the character passes release to date. Getting them for basically 60$ CAD no tax.

A few questions: 1. Are they worth it? 2. Which are the best / worst characters to play as from the passes? 3. I heard that fight money offline has been rendered obsolete. Will these DLC characters help me get more?

Thank you! On a side note, Really wish they would release a map pack dlc bundle on the store...

Completely new to SF, fighting games, and the FGC. Some thoughts and questions from a noob and (newly) former MTG player.

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 12:17 AM PST

I actually started out playing Hearthstone and eventually moved on to Duelyst. From there, I played Standard in Magic the Gathering and from there, I moved into the Modern format. For those that don't know, Standard uses the most recent MTG cards, so staying in that format causes you to constantly update and adapt. Modern, on the other hand, never loses cards like Standard does. As a result, it's much more expensive.

The main reason I'm talking about MTG, or any card game for that matter, is because fighting games don't have $1000 "decks" (i.e. characters). Actually to be precise, MTG decks usually have 60 cards in them and in the case of Modern, some cards cost as much as $200. The Street Fighter equivalent then, would be a $200 special move or combo. When I played Magic I would often watch streamers play with fine-tuned, expensive decks. Sometimes I went on mtggoldfish.com and daydreamed of one day getting play with a playset of Tarmogoyfs.

With Street Fighter, I don't have to worry about any of that. I've been playing for a couple weeks and often find myself wishing I could play the cr.mp, st.mp, Tenko, Orochi "card," except the only barrier between me and that ability is practice. In other words, I can play that combo if I work for the ability to do it.

With all of that said, I do have some questions/anxieties:

  • How should I practice Karin's juggle moves? I've been struggling to land Tenko > Orochi in training mode, and I just don't have the ability to do any of Karin's trials except the first one. One thing I've started doing is alternating Tenko and Orochi without trying to land the Orochi during the dummy's fall (while it's still in the air). It seems like I'm still developing my fighting game "RAM" and when I land the Tenko I draw a blank and suddenly forget how to do the Orochi, or panic and screw up my inputs. Additionally, I've been plinking the Tenko, which can't be done for Orochi, so I have to switch between two different styles of input. I'm sure it will come with time, but I'm definitely afraid that I may not be capable of doing Karin's juggles.

  • How is the Hori Fighting Commander Pro (the one with the adjustable d-pad)? I've got the symmetrical Hori FC4, but I hate how cheap and light it feels. I'm not sure if the HFC Pro is more weighty or not. Plus I don't know if it would be comfortable to play with since I'm not a "claw" player.

  • Does SFIV have an active PC and/or PS3/4 community?

  • Does SFIV have any characters similar to SFV's Karin? What about the 30th Anniversary bundle's characters (SF1-SF3)? One of the things I like about the franchise is how much history it has and having an opportunity to get in touch with the history would be really cool. I also like the idea of "graduating" to the older and more advanced games (assuming those communities are active enough).

Educated guess on when the next update for the game will be. February 27th Tuesday - Reasoning inside.

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 06:52 AM PST

So, I notice in the Monster Hunter costumes blog that Ken first task begins exactly on February 27th, and taking into consideration that we will have to fight ken wearing the monster hunter costume just like we fight Rashid wearing his V. Joe costume, they'll have to update the game on the February 27th so that they put the Monster Hunter costume in the game for ken to be using it when we begin to do this task.

Plus, like all major updates for this game, they usually come out at the end of the month.

I think is very plausible that the next patch fixing the bugs will be released on February 27th along with the Monster Hunter costumes for the AI to use when we fight them. And I wouldn't be surprise if Capcom would put some new costumes and stages in the game in this update.

What do you think?
