Suspending a player without telling what for will not lead to a change of behaviour

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:36 AM PDT

Sometimes players know what they were banned for but more often they don't and think that they were suspended because of a bunch of false reports.

Most sources on training say that punishment is the most effective when it is applied immediately after person does something wrong and he knows exactly what he is being punished for.

What we currently have:

  • blizz: you did something bad in some of your last 500 games, here's your ban
  • player: I didn't do anything bad, why did you ban me?
  • blizz: sry can't tell ya bye

Would be very useful if blizz would at least mention exact games where they think you've broken the rules. Even if some games are actually fine since the system is automatic, but at least one of them should contain a ban worthy behaviour.

ON PTR, you can now select/deselect multiple game modes on the statistics, roster and match history pages

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:33 AM PDT

This seems like a welcome addition, and I hope it goes live, as it allows the user to exclude vs. AI games when looking at stats such as winrates or KDA for a particular hero.

However, I have not seen any mention of this change on the PTR patch notes. Does anyone have more information on this?

Edit: This applies to the profile summary page as well.

-200 on a loss with a bot is an insult

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:18 AM PDT

It's really disappointing that you getting to waste 20 min on a game with a bot you know you will lose that will remove 200 points from you. And I'm not talking about the reconnect system which we know how it is. I'm talking about an entire game from start to end with a bot.

Try Mode seriously needs to be accessible from the Roster Screens

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 11:21 AM PDT

It should be possible to right click a hero portrait whether you own it or not from the Roster Screen and open Try Mode for that hero.

To get to Try Mode for any Hero right now one has to go through the Collection Tab, which is counter-intuitive, inconvenient, and not good design from the perspective of encouraging new players to actually um... TRY HEROES they might want to buy. You're losing out on sweet, sweet gems here Blizz...

Add "Did you know" facts in loading screen

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:25 AM PDT

After a couple of games everybody should know how the maps work. Why not add some "Did you know" facts in loading screen like:

Every minion wave is worth 452 total XP, increasing every 2 waves 11 times.

A fort tower grant 250 XP. This is only 55 % of a minion wave's worth of XP.

At even levels, hero kills grant 300 XP. This is only 66 % of a minion wave's worth of XP.

Soak your lanes!

or some nice hero facts..

What do you think?

Suggestion: can we get an in-game icon for recently changed/new talents?

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:19 PM PDT

I know you reddit folks are mostly active players who read all patch notes and constantly seek info about the game to get advantage in ranked. But I also know that there are a lot of casual players in HOTS, not all of them are aware of recent changes that constantly occur in this game. Today I've seen Hammer who picked BFG and tried to use it on structures. He wasn't bad, and honestly I felt sorry for him - I know the talent was OP and stupid, but the player isn't the one to be blamed for that. He just came from work home and sat to play a couple of QM games and was scrued with heroic couse he didn't notice the change.

If we are talking about lots of people who don't know about basic game mechanics, we can't assume they read patch notes and take this new info into account. But I believe simple notification icon about recent talent change both in the talent section during the match and in hero perview could make life of casual players easier. There is already an icon for new stuff in the game shop, it could be used for indication (requires only size ajustment).

Edit: grammar.

Shower-thought: we are on a timeline where Shad's Stukov prowess basically killed the hero.

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:47 PM PDT

Now, I'm not saying that this won't have happened otherwise but come on. The amount of nerfs that Stukov got over time were completely insane compared to how little he was played and considered before Shad. It's crazy. It's super crazy. If Shad disliked Stukov for whatever reason (he felt strongly against Zerg, for example), then Stukov maybe maybe would still be a powerhouse on Hero League today.

This will happen to Sgt. Hammer pretty soon, too, since her kit is extremely opressive.

PS: Peleta, you will have to tank Rich for the same thing :)

PS2: Pun intended.

Sally Whitemane – Abilities, Quotes, and Skins Lore

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:58 AM PDT

Hello, folks,

It took a few days to compile, but here's the followup to my Whitemane lore thread from last week, where I cover all the details and lore references I could find regarding the Nexus' newest support.

As usual, I left out anything that doesn't have anything relevant I can comment on, so I skipped over Inquisition, Searing Lash, and most of her talents. As always, if I missed anything or made any mistakes, feel free to point it out and I'll update the post accordingly.

Whitemane character lore thread

All previous "Lore of" episodes

Abilities

Whitemane's abilities are loosely inspired by the Discipline specialization for priests in World of Warcraft.

  • D: Zeal - Whitemane's trait seems to be functionally inspired by Atonement, a central Discipline priest mechanic in WoW. Atonement is a passive buff automatically applied to friendly targets for 15 seconds whenever the priest heals them with one of several spells. When the priest deals spell damage, all targets affected by Atonement are healed for a significant percentage of the damage done.

  • Q: Desperate Plea - Seems to be a reference to Plea, a Discipline ability which instantly healed an ally for a significant amount. Plea had no cooldown, but in the original version of the spell, its mana cost increased dramatically for each active Atonement. Plea was eventually removed entirely in the recent pre-patch for the Battle for Azeroth expansion. "Desperate Plea" is also the name of a priest self-healing spell in the defunct World of Warcraft Trading Card Game.

  • R1: Scarlet Aegis - The shield symbol that appears on allies when this ability is cast is similar to the Aegis of the Scarlet Commander and Bloodforged Shield items from World of Warcraft. These two shields in turn feature a stylized red flame sigil that is also seen on the tabards worn by almost all members of the Scarlet Crusade in WoW.

  • R2: Divine Reckoning - The flames created on the ground of this ability's area of effect roughly form into four copies of the aforementioned Scarlet flame symbol.

Talents
  • Level 1: Martyrdom - Shares its name with a Disc priest talent that was removed in the Cataclysm expansion. Martyrdom gave the priest a chance to gain the Focused Casting buff upon being struck by a critical strike, causing their spellcasts to not be delayed by taking damage and reducing the duration of hostile interrupt effects.

  • Level 4: High Inquisitor - High Inquisitor is Whitemane's rank within the Scarlet Crusade. She was preceded by High Inquisitor Fairbanks, who was the trusted advisor to Highlord Alexandros Mograine but was later killed by the Scarlet Crusade for telling of how Alexandros was betrayed and murdered by his son Renault. Another Scarlet High Inquisitor was High Inquisitor Valroth, who was killed by Scourge death knights in the Scarlet Enclave (an area whose Crusaders later formed the Scarlet Onslaught).

  • Level 20: Scarlet Crusade - The Scarlet Crusade is the extremist human sect that Whitemane is a member of, and whose history I covered in her lore thread.

  • Level 20: Purge the Wicked - Purge the Wicked is a level 90 Disc priest talent in WoW that instantly cleanses a target enemy with fire, dealing damage over time. This effect can spread to nearby enemies when the priest uses their Penance ability on the original target.

Poke quotes

For reference and comparison, here are Whitemane's World of Warcraft quotes. The first lines are from the version of Whitemane present in the classic WoW version of Scarlet Monastery, voiced by Kath Soucie, while the rest are from the revamped Scarlet Monastery introduced in Mists of Pandaria, voiced by Grey DeLisle (who voices Li-Ming and Nova in HotS). The "Arise, my champion" line remained identical in both versions, even after the revamp and voice actor change.

Also, to clear up some confusion real quick, while some speculated that Whitemane in HotS would be voiced by DeLisle, Matt Villers confirmed that she is actually voiced by Erica Lindbeck.

"Greetings." / "What do you seek?" - Two of the on-click quotes spoken by the death knight version of Whitemane in World of Warcraft: Legion (more on that below).

"I've found that without proper guidance, Crusades quickly become Onslaughts." - At the start of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, Scarlet Crusade forces led by High General Brigitte Abbendis left Lordaeron behind and instead journeyed to the arctic continent of Northrend to battle the undead Scourge, with Abbendis declaring that the Scarlet Crusade was no more and that they would now be called the Scarlet Onslaught. However, despite this, the Scarlet Crusade and its members (including Whitemane) remained active in Lordaeron as a separate entity from the Onslaught.

"I know we're supposed to call everyone heroes these days, but Renault will always remain my champion." - Possibly a joke about how some players incorrectly refer to heroes in HotS as "champions", as that is what playable characters are called in League of Legends. Renault Mograine was the son of the famed paladin Alexandros "the Ashbringer" Mograine. He was manipulated by the dreadlord Balnazzar to murder his father with his namesake sword the Ashbringer, and later joined the newly-formed Scarlet Crusade as the commander of Scarlet Monastery, which he oversaw alongside High Inquisitor Whitemane. In classic WoW, Scarlet Commander Mograine served as the final boss of the Scarlet Monastery dungeon alongside Whitemane. Players would first face Mograine, and upon killing him, Whitemane would emerge from her chamber, resurrect Renault with the words "Arise, my champion", and resume the fight at his side. Canonically, however, Renault was eventually killed by his father's vengeful spirit due to the actions of his younger brother Darion. Years later, when the in-game Scarlet Monastery was revamped in the Mists of Pandaria expansion, Renault was replaced as Whitemane's companion and Scarlet Monastery's military commander by a man named Commander Durand. Even so, when Whitemane is killed by players a final time in the revamped Monastery, her last words are "Mograine..."

"Oh, you noticed the new chapeau? It's not on my loot table, so don't try anything." - Whitemane is widely known for her iconic hat, which she wears in her boss encounter in Scarlet Monastery and which is among the loot that can drop from her after death (in the form of "Whitemane's Chapeau" in the original Scarlet Monastery and "Whitemane's Embroidered Chapeau" in the updated version). Many Scarlet Monastery dungeon runs have taken place simply because a player desires to get their hands on the chapeau due to its distinctive appearance. As with many characters who make the transition into the Nexus, Whitemane's HotS appearance and clothing — including her hat — are slightly different from her WoW model, hence the comment about having a new chapeau.

"I'm not bad. I'm just rendered that way." - Reference to a quote by Jessica Rabbit from the 1988 hybrid live-action/computer-animated film Who Framed Roger Rabbit: "I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way." Both Sally and Jessica wear distinctive red clothing, and both of them are also quite heavily sexualized characters.

"Why does everyone who comes to the Scarlet Monastery want to kill me? Am I out of touch? ...No, it is the heathens who are wrong." - While the Scarlet Crusade believed that they were righteous in their quest to eliminate undead, pretty much everyone else saw them as dangerous lunatics. This quote is a reference to a line by Seymour Skinner from a 1994 episode of The Simpsons: "Am I so out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong."

"We Whitemanes have never approved of the Greymanes' rule. They're too neutral. With Blackmanes you know where they stand, but with Greymanes, who knows? It sickens me." - The Greymanes are the royal family of the human kingdom of Gilneas, represented in Heroes of the Storm by King Genn Greymane. This quote is purely poking fun at the similarities between the names "Greymane" and "Whitemane", as Whitemane has absolutely no connection to the Greymane family lore-wise; specifically, this quote is a reference to a line spoken by Zapp Brannigan in a 1999 episode of Futurama: "I hate these filthy neutrals, Kif. With enemies you know where they stand, but with neutrals, who knows? It sickens me." As for Blackmane, there aren't any known human families by that name, and the only thing called "Blackmane" in *Warcraft is a group of gnoll mercenaries briefly encountered in Mists of Pandaria.

"I always ensure my champions keep on fighting until the end." - Refers to Whitemane's ability to resurrect her allies after death, which she uses during her boss encounter in WoW to bring Renault/Durand and numerous lesser Scarlet Crusaders back to life to fight for her. This quote is likely also a reference to the lyrics of the 1977 Queen song "We Are the Champions". (Thanks to /u/CommandThrower for pointing the latter part out.)

"Well, Renault always got a 'rise' out of that one. [chuckles]" - A pun on the phrase "getting a rise out of" along with Sally's resurrections of Renault and the famous quote accompanying it. (Thanks to /u/Subsourian for correcting me on this.)

"My Scarlet Diviners examined every Scarlet letter of every Scarlet book in Scarlet Monastery's Scarlet Library, yet none was a Scarlet thesaurus, so I burnt it down." - Seems to just be a joke about how most things associated with the Scarlet Crusade have "Scarlet" in the name, though it could also partially be a reference to the 1850 Nathaniel Hawthorne novel The Scarlet Letter. The Library is a wing of Scarlet Monastery, later made part of the separate Scarlet Halls dungeon in the Mists of Pandaria revamp. Scarlet Diviners were mobs that could be found in the Library prior to the revamp. The comment about burning the library down is possibly a nod to Flameweaver Koegler, the final boss of the revamped Scarlet Halls, who is a fire mage attempting to burn away all records of the Scarlet Crusade's past failures.

"Me? A Horseman of the Ebon Blade? [dismissive noise] I would never serve the undead! Besides, do I look like I'd be caught dead in black?" - In World of Warcraft: Legion, years after Sally's canonical final death in Scarlet Monastery, the death knights of the Knights of the Ebon Blade raised her into undeath to become a member of the recreated Four Horsemen, a group of four powerful death knights, despite the hatred she had had for the undead in life. Aside from being freed from her insanity, the reanimated Whitemane also abandoned her old red robes in favor of black plate armor befitting a death knight.

"No one expects the Scarlet inquisition!" - An obvious reference to the Spanish Inquisition from Monty Python's Flying Circus. Amongst the similarities between the Spanish Inquisition and the Scarlet Crusade are such diverse elements as ruthless efficiency, torture, and an almost fanatical devotion to their religion. And nice red uniforms.

Interaction quotes

Whitemane: "The Scarlet Onslaught will see to your destruction." Anub'arak: "I have no time to waste on you." / Anub'arak: "You." "Whitemane: "After this battle, I will purge your corruption from this realm personally." - Anub'arak served as a powerful lieutenant of the undead Scourge in Northrend. The Scarlet Onslaught was a faction of Scarlet Crusaders who splintered away from the main faction to take the fight to the Scourge directly in Northrend (however, the Onslaught are not known to have ever confronted Anub'arak or his nerubian minions).

Whitemane: "Your time is coming, murderer. The Scarlet Crusade rises against you!" Arthas: "Silence." / Arthas: "Bow before your king." Whitemane: "You betrayed MY king." - Though once the beloved prince of the kingdom of Lordaeron, Arthas became a death knight of the Scourge, murdered his father King Terenas Menethil, and played a pivotal role in securing Lordaeron's downfall at the hands of the Scourge, which the Scarlet Crusade was formed to fight against.

Whitemane: "My Crusade is now your Crusade." Johanna: "Yeah, that's now how this works." / Johanna: "Do you really think you're worthy to fight by MY side?" Whitemane: "By YOUR side? [chuckles] No, Crusader, you are under MY command." - References the similarities between Diablo Crusaders such as Johanna and Warcraft's Scarlet Crusaders (and the fact that Whitemane is normally used to bossing around lesser Crusaders in Scarlet Monastery). The Zakarum church and the Scarlet Crusade apparently have some similar history of demonic corruption as well (the work of Mephisto and Balnazzar, respectively), but I'm not a Diablo expert so someone like /u/Golblin might be able to explain it better.

Whitemane: "I will have vengeance for the life you stole from me, lich!" Kel'Thuzad: "Enough. I grow tired of this distraction." / Kel'Thuzad: "Hm. You. This presents an... unfortunate complication." Whitemane: "The Light will reduce you to ash. It's not complicated." - Whitemane and Kel'Thuzad have never directly interacted, but Kel'Thuzad did play a vital role in the Scourge's conquest of Lordaeron, which in turn ultimately led to the deaths of Whitemane's family (specifically, Sally had to kill her own parents and siblings after they transformed into undead) and the formation of the Scarlet Crusade.

(To paladin characters) Whitemane: "The Silver Hand failed, paladin. Join us! Take up the path of vengeance!" - The Knights of the Silver Hand was the original order of human paladins. They played an important role for the Alliance during the Second War, and though many of the paladins fell during the Third War, the remnants of the Silver Hand continued fighting against the Scourge after the fall of Lordaeron. The Scarlet Crusade and the Argent Dawn originally formed as a result of a schism in the Silver Hand after the death of Highlord Alexandros Mograine.

Whitemane: "Keep to yourself, abomination, and you might escape my wrath... for now." Stitches: "You be quiet. No ruin smash time!" / Stitches: "Stitches no like you." Whitemane: "The feeling is mutual." - Not much to say about these ones, other than that abominations like Stitches are a type of undead and Scarlets obviously don't like undead.

Whitemane: "You are no different from the Lich King!" Sylvanas: "Hold your tongue, or I'll tear it out." - Sylvanas is the leader of the Forsaken, a faction of renegade undead who broke away from the Scourge, took control of much of Lordaeron, and later joined the Horde. The Scarlets didn't care that the Forsaken were no longer Scourge and were equally determined to destroy the Forsaken as they were the minions of the Lich King. In addition, following the Cataclysm, Sylvanas began using increasingly more ruthless methods such as using the deadly blight on entire towns and raising fallen humans as new Forsaken, and even her own allies began worrying that Sylvanas was becoming more like the Lich King with each passing day.

Sylvanas: "I thought I was done suffering fools!" Whitemane: "Your suffering has yet to begin." - Whitemane's response here is identical to what Kel'Thuzad says in reply to the same Sylvanas line. This is possibly a subtle way of saying that the Scarlet Crusade is sometimes no better than the Scourge they claim to be fighting, or it might just be a nod to the mutual hatred between the Scourge, the Forsaken, and the Crusade.

Whitemane: "You call yourself a priestess? What a disgrace." Tyrande: "We remain allied through convenience. Do not make it... inconvenient." - Human and night elf priests are fairly different. Most humans revere the Holy Light of Creation, while night elves instead worship the moon goddess Elune, which someone like Sally would probably see as blasphemous. Night elf priestesses of the moon also tend to be a lot more martial than normal priests, being more similar to a mix between priestess, warrior, and huntress.

(To undead characters) Whitemane: "Your plague of undeath will not take root in this realm!" / "My desire for victory supersedes my desire to destroy you... for now." - The Scarlet Crusade was formed with the sole purpose of destroying undead, so Whitemane naturally despises having to ally with them. The plague of undeath is a magical disease capable of transforming the living into mindless undead and was the main tool with which the Scourge destroyed Lordaeron.

Whitemane: "I have far too much integrity to ally with one so corrupt." Warsong Johanna: "Talk down to me again, pinkskin. I love putting pale dogs in their place." / Warsong Johanna: "One of those Scarlet zealots? Puh! What a waste." Whitemane: "I will not be ridiculed by a boorish peasant!" - It's never been directly stated how the Scarlets view the orcish people, but given the animosity between humans and orcs in general, the Scarlets already being intolerant of non-human races, and the fact that the orcs were once enslaved to demonic corruption, it's not surprising that Whitemane and Warsong Johanna seem to despise each other.

Whitemane: "Bear witness, draenei. This is how to wield the Light against the corrupt!" Yrel: "I do not know why the Light answers you, but I hope it can redeem you." / Yrel: "You... How dare you call upon the Light for such twisted atrocities?" Whitemane: "[laughs] The Light is more vengeful than you draenei will admit." - The culture of the draenei is largely based around the Holy Light, but they generally use it for more benevolent purposes as opposed to the Scarlets who use its power for much darker methods such as torture. There's been some fan confusion in the past over why the Light would answer to the Scarlets, who are for the most part insane and cruel, but the way Blizzard explained it, wielding the Light is mostly a matter of having willpower and faith in one's ability to do so, and the Scarlets have plenty of that.

Kill quotes

Most of these don't have much to comment on and would pretty much just be me repeating what I already said in the Interaction quotes section, so I'll only comment on the ones that have some additional reference.

Generic: "Death to all tainted by the Scourge!" - The Scarlet Crusade is famously devoted to destroying anyone they suspect of being infected with the Scourge's plague of undeath (which, as it turns out, eventually came to be synonymous with "anyone not wearing a Scarlet tabard").

Arthas: "Suffer in the Light, traitor!"

Blaze: "Just a flash in the pan." - "Flash in the pan" is a saying for something that has a lot of flash but no long-term substance. Both the firebat unit in StarCraft II and Blaze in Heroes of the Storm say "I'm not just a flash in the pants, you know" as one of their poke quotes.

Jaina: "You left us to die, Proudmoore. Now it's your turn." - During the Third War, when Lordaeron fell to the Scourge, Jaina Proudmoore gathered as many survivors as she could and led them across the Great Sea to Kalimdor. Many of the remaining Knights of the Silver Hand were not among those refugees and instead remained in the plague-infested Lordaeron, where they later splintered into the Argent Dawn and Scarlet Crusade.

Johanna: "Your false Crusade is at its end!"

Kel'Thuzad: "Vengeance for Lordaeron!"

Necromancer characters: "Share the fate of your undead."

Paladin characters: "You paladins lack the courage to do what is needed."

Stitches: "Disgusting wretch."

Sylvanas: "Even the Dark Lady cannot abide the Light."

Undead characters: "Let this be a lesson: the Scarlet Crusade will not be taken so easily!" - A reference to the World of Warcraft: Ashbringer comic series, in which Sally at one point destroys a force of undead attacking the town of Hearthglen and tells them: "Let this be a lesson to all Scourge: the Scarlet Crusade will not be taken so easily!"

Yrel: "You squander the Light's blessings."

Zealot characters: "You think YOU'RE a zealot? [laughs]" - Zealots are protoss warriors that serve as the basic protoss infantry unit in StarCraft and StarCraft II. Warcraft's Scarlet Crusaders are often called "zealots" as well, in the sense that they're religious fanatics.

Other quotes

"Arise, my champion!" (voice line) - This is perhaps Whitemane's most iconic line, spoken upon resurrecting Scarlet Commander Mograine and later Commander Durand in WoW's Scarlet Monastery dungeon.

"I have arisen. An interesting reversal." (resurrected by another player) - A nod to the above line and the fact that while Whitemane is usually the one doing the resurrections, in HotS she is the one who can be brought back to life by her allies. However, interestingly, it's implied in WoW that Whitemane was even able to resurrect herself after death, which is why players had to use the swords known as the Blades of the Anointed to kill her permanently in the revamped Mists of Pandaria version of Scarlet Monastery.

"Mograine..." (death) - As previously mentioned, this refers to Renault Mograine and are the exact same final words as the ones spoken by Whitemane when she is killed by players in the revamped Scarlet Monastery.

"The Light has spoken!" (attack/voice line) / "You will pay for this treachery!" (attack/voice line) - Lines spoken by Whitemane in both the original and revamped Scarlet Monastery. The first one is spoken when she kills a player, the latter when she first emerges from her chamber to engage the players after Mograine/Durand is killed (in the original Scarlet Monastery, she said "Mograine has fallen? You shall pay for this treachery!", while in the revamped version she leaves out the first part and just says "You shall pay for this treachery!").

"We attack as one!" (attack) / "We are victorious!" (celebrate) - These are also Whitemane quotes from WoW, but not from Scarlet Monastery. Instead, they are references to Old Hillsbrad Foothills (AKA Escape from Durnholde Keep), a dungeon in which players travel back in time to a past version of the Hillsbrad Foothills region of Lordaeron to free Thrall from captivity in the fortress of Durnholde and prevent the evil infinite dragonflight from interfering with the timeline. If players travel off the beaten path they can visit the town of Southshore and see past versions of many famous characters, such as Alexandros Mograine and Kel'Thuzad. They can also find a little girl by the name of Sally Whitemane, playing at slaying monsters (i.e., harmless frogs) with her friends Renault Mograine and Little Jimmy Vishas (who would go on to become the Scarlet torturer Interrogator Vishas). "We attack as one!" and "We are victorious!" are lines spoken by this child version of Whitemane when the children attack and kill the frog.

Skins
  • Lordaeron - Lordaeron was a large and powerful human kingdom located in the region in the same name in the northwestern Eastern Kingdoms. It served as the leading nation of the Alliance of Lordaeron during the Second War, but during the Third War the kingdom was consumed by the Scourge and later became contested between Scourge remnants, the Forsaken, and the Scarlet Crusade, who sought to reclaim the kingdom from the undead. Lordaeron Whitemane is dressed in blue and gold, the signature colors of the Alliance.

  • Twilight - The name and purple color scheme appear to be a reference to the Twilight's Hammer, a powerful and sinister cult that worships the malefic Old Gods and seeks to bring about the end of the world, an event known as the Hour of Twilight. The Twilight's Hammer are one of the forces that have consistently posed among the greatest threats to Azeroth's inhabitants, particularly after Deathwing shattered the world during the Cataclysm expansion.

  • Celestial Empress - Part of a shared series of skins that turn HotS heroes into superheroes or into members of the evil Eternal Empire. This skin turns Whitemane into the "Celestial Empress", who is planning to usurp Star Queen Li-Ming and wreak havoc on the galaxy.

Music

Whitemane's Heroes of the Storm theme is derived from two different World of Warcraft tracks. The first part (0:00 - 1:00) is based on the Western Plaguelands music from World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, but I can't seem to find what the second part (1:00 onwards) is based on. I've seen it suggested that it's based on one of the Evil Forest themes from classic WoW, but I'm having trouble hearing the resemblance between them. If anyone can confirm what it's based on, let me know and I'll add it to the post.

In any case, the music in Whitemane's Hero Spotlight is a mix of the following:

I'll probably be back in a couple weeks with another thread, but I'm not sure what I want to cover. Originally, before Whitemane was announced, I wanted to cover some more Warcraft crossover skins (including the ones from the Echoes of Alterac event), but it feels a bit late for that at this point so I might just hold off on that thread until we get another batch of new Warcraft skins in the future. I might just cover Garrosh or someone instead, but we'll see, I guess.

Why Can't We Blacklist Maps Yet?

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:12 PM PDT

I've been playing since beta and am honestly amazed and frustrated that we still do not have the option to blacklist a few maps for casual modes (QM and Unranked). This would improve the experience of literally everyone who plays these modes. The only possible fallout would be longer queue times for masochists who enjoy the maps hated by the majority (BHB being the biggest offender).

It's not as if this is a difficult thing to implement. It's baffling that we don't have it yet. Why don't we Blizzard? If you want to make it even more engaging, implement a pre-load-in map vote where all players get to vote on what map to play (out of three random maps, for example). This has zero potential downsides and has worked wonders in other games (notably COD franchise) for over a decade now. Giving players agency over their game experience is ALWAYS a good thing.

As Shia would say,

JUST DO IT.

It's been a whole year and 3 months since 2.0 came out, and Auto-select still picks a random loadout.

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:40 AM PDT

Did Blizzard say anything about this ? I would really like to read their thoughts on Auto-select in QM.

For now, I strictly never use this option because I can't stand to play with the vanilla horse, default Announcer, Ugly little banner, random spray and voice line, and of course, anything else than the skin I actually bought to play with on a specific hero.

I know I'm not the only one waiting for this to be changed and I feel like Blizzard don't care at all to do this change, while I'm pretty sure it would be super easy to do, and wouldn't use much ressources for them.

Let us ban 1 map

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:15 AM PDT

Right now, if we exclude Hanamura, we have 14 available maps. There are 10 players per game, so if all of the players happened to each ban a different map (the worst case scenario which is very unlikely), that means 10 maps would be banned and there would be 4 maps left to choose from. This means that this WOULD NOT AFFECT QUEUE TIMES and we would never need to see that map we hate so much ever again.

EDIT: Most people are going to vote out Blackheart's Bay anyways.

Stukov PTR changes: Some notes and feedback

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:11 PM PDT

Hi everyone, master/GM support player here. I've played a number of games on the PTR with the Stukov changes, and I just wanted to write down my thoughts because he's one of my favorite heroes in the game.

TL:DR - Less synergies with E build = overall nerf but feels healthier. Overall still weak thanks to earlier nerfs too. Still a few trap talents that haven't been addressed.

E Build

  • On live a full E build would give you the permanent huge AoE with a huge range while still allowing you to spec into the root. Now you have no extra range if you want the root (which most people still will) and limited duration more often.

  • Considering most people went this build, and it was the easiest to utilize, I think this patch is overall a nerf for Stukov. There isn't really a full E build anymore since any synergies are limited or conflicting (that's not neccesarily a bad thing though)

Low Blow

  • A solid option but it doesn't synergize with any of the other E talents directly, so it's more optional. Still, it will probably be the go-to if you are speccing into E. I would rather have seen It Hungers moved to level 1 which would immediately provide some synergy with other E talents, but on the other hand it's nice to be able to flex into Spine Launcher instead.

It Hungers

  • E hits 4 times per second, meaning 3.75 seconds to reset E cooldown, but <2 seconds if you hit 2 people and just over 1 second if you hit 3.

Growing Infestation

  • Not as painful as I imagined at first, 4 seconds is a relatively long time in a fight that isn't sieging or defending at the gates (which was the issue). I could see it easily being 5 or 6 seconds however without being an issue. It synergizes pretty well with It Hungers at 13 now, but that would be giving up the root combo which I don't see many people doing.

CDR Build

  • The least changed if you go Fetid Touch > OGS > Targeted Excision > Virulent Reaction.

  • BUT, still heavily nerfed along with the rest of Stukov when they were attempting to balance out Growing Infestation.

  • The E cooldown being 10 seconds makes the whole combo cooldown longer because it is limited by the highest cooldown, which makes OGS less attractive and Vigorous Reuptake in turn a little more so.

    • Suggestion: Lower baseline E cooldown back to 8 seconds.

Poppin' Pustules

  • I like the new timing requirement and the damage is noticeable. I could see a build with this along with Long Pitch and It Hungers, although that would be limited by his trait cooldown.

Vigorous Reuptake

  • I really like the removal of this quest, but it feels lazy that it has the exact same requirement as One Good Spread (3 targets). I always thought it was boring as well, being just a healing increase.

    • Suggestion: It would be nice to see a different requirement, for instance - if it was a bigger heal but only when two or less people had Healing Pathogen on them, or it was a bigger heal only if you detonated a W as well.

Biotic Armor / Universal Carrier

  • Does work with Universal Carrier (so permanent 15 physical armor). However, since UC is already a trap and remains unchanged, I still don't see this as a good option given the opportunity cost, unless the enemy is 100% auto damage. The change alone is arguably a buff, but for single target protection I'd much rather have the 4ish seconds of 50 armor up front instead of blowing my detonation for what should be a proactive mitigation.

    • Suggestion: Buff Universal Carrier to actually be worth taking alone. I always thought a fun idea would be to increase the travel time of the Healing Pathogen 2-3x, which might sound like a nerf but would actually make triggering it mid-air a reliable option (which keeps it going). Also just lower the healing reduction slightly.

The Long Pitch:

  • The CDR works on your trait too so it's actually quite powerful if you can hit it in a teamfight. That said, I don't like the diffusion of purpose for this talent. It was a great option purely for poke and long range disruption. Now it's less of that and more for an in-fight boost to healing and utility, which steps on the toes of Targeted Excision. I'm not a fan of adding CDR to a talent when there's a talent on the same tier that does that already. This is most likely an overall buff but I prefer the previous version.

    • Suggestion: Not sure honestly, but it would be nice if they could adjust it so the emphasis stays on long range poke. Perhaps just reset W and D cooldowns if no Healing Pathogens are active.

Push Comes to Shove

  • Much, much better now. The speed removal is in fact a buff in many cases because you get the reset easier. The slow guarantees you some value even if you clip the edge of a wall after pushing someone no more than a foot, and makes it way better for securing a kill. Great change!

Top Off

  • Laughably bad for a Storm talent, and unfortunately boring as well. I have no idea why you would nerf a level 4 talent that is never picked before moving it to 20, even with it becoming multi-target. Then again Stukov has an extremely weak 20 tier anyway, and it's the only one that adds healing so you might want it just for that.

Bio-Explosion switch

  • Not changed in the patch technically, but that's the problem. Still makes you literally worse in most situations, so 99% of the time it looks like upgrading your ult will be the best option.

    • Suggestions: Change Bio-Explosion Switch to not cancel Lurking Arm. Buff Top Off and/or make it more interesting. Maybe much higher healing but also a higher threshold.

Overall I'm pretty neutral on the changes, but I always preferred the CDR build instead of E build myself. I expect his winrate to go down with these changes regardless. If and/or when we see some slight tuning upwards I'd like to see them address the rest of his problem talents, and lower the cooldown of E back to where it was. I'd even like to see them lower the cooldown of his trait slightly which could open up some more build paths that require detonating (I would even trade some raw healing numbers for that).

About learning, and why the QM is disconnecting people from HL/TL. (Warning, actual psychology theory of learning stuff)

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 02:55 PM PDT

Last days we were reading a lot of threads talking about the concept that keep players disconnected from the actual game, we called it the 'lack of learning'. But learning about what? We do play the same game! so what do we lack? Indeed, game concepts. This is nothing new, in everygame you can expect people to not realize how even play the game, in fighting games we call them 'the buttom smashers', they doesnt know what to do, they just feed their game cognitive structures with the responde 'buttom=hit'

What if I tell you that 'buttom smashers' have their equivalent here in the moba genre?.

We all seeplayers in HL or TL that seems to play just for the fun factor (indeed, we are in a videogame). People that play whatever they want, no mater if the team lacks supports, tank, brusier, they will just lock that Genji and patrol the whole map in the search of takedowns.

Let's examine this, (here's when the psychology part starts, read under your own risk).

Vygotsky was a succesful psychologist, he developed the sociohistorical theory of learning, in which a subject (we, the players are the subjects) internalize content (lets take internalize as 'learn') by a rule known as 'double formation', the social interact is one (the fact that we players or subjects, interact with other players to approach more into the game's content) and the use of 'tools', this is became from the interaction with a proper object of study (the game, heroes of the storm). Now, guess what happens when your double formation is focused on the most popular game mode (QM) and then you jump to the competitive aspect of the game (HL/TL).

We can predict an (what in psychology learning theories are called) failure. A failure from the subject to understand the object, ending up in a loop, during which the player tried to internalize two objects, similars in concept but differents in form. (for example, the differences between math and physics).

Enought of Vygotsky, lets jump into something more simple, Ausubel was an American psychologist, particularly interested in the learning (just as Vygotsky), he was one of the main actors during the develop of the 'Cognitive psychology'. What's happend here?

Basically Ausubel said: 'For asimilation process (lets take asimilation as learning) of complex concepts, the subject MUST have some kind of referred concepts about it, this was called cognitive structures. Those cognitive strucures must anchorage (actual psychology concept) the new contents that the subject aim to assimilate. In other words, the new contents must be related (no random stuff) to the old ones'. Now here, the QM can be a good example of 'related content' right? Where players improve to after jump into the ladders, the answer is: No.

The QM and the HL are within the same game, but HL/TL have their own sets of rules, differences. Those differences between ladder and casual play are in all games, dont worry, and they are called 'the meta game'. In fact, the meta game in QM is non-existent compared to the HL/TL (for it's pure nature of being unpredictable, random, 'crazy') An equivalent of QM and HL would be:

(math example, very similar)Imagine a subject that know the basic rules of algebra. Now imagine him trying to derivate functions, trying to integrate. In fact, he will be using algebra aswell, but the fact that the subject doesnt know how to derivate, how to integrate, dont matter how much he practice algebra, if he dont realize what a derivate is, he will never assimilate the next content. (even here, the algebra has a good role of cognitive structure).

TL.DR: Non-existent meta in QM breaks the line of learning more complex concepts such as meta game, team comps, roles, etc.

Thanks for reading, I'm a physics professor and english isnt my nature language, so sorry if some words doesnt have any sense, I'll correct them. In fact, this game is my favorite, I always loved Blizzard for their passion on their works and indeed their games. The fact that I care this game a lot made me think about this post, thanks for reading. :)

The lack of basic game knowledge exists in every MOBA, it's not a HotS exclusive problem.

Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:33 PM PDT

I'm tired of people telling this. The tutorial should be updated, that's 100% true, HotS advanced tutorial currently focuses on the wrong things.

BUT lack of basic game sense appears in literally every MOBA. HotS is a casual MOBA that actually doesn't even make clear the basic objectives, when to do what. If you're playing with a casual player, who doesn't even bother to learn this, ofc he won't be as good as you, who actually put effort into being better in this game.

So don't talk about HotS being bad, it's literally there in every other game, HotS is no different, if players are unwilling to put effort into being better, it's not something any dev can fix.

You can give water to a horse but you can't make the horse drink it.

Can we get another full global hero?

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:43 AM PDT

I really enjoy global heroes. They offer a great gameplay mechanic. With that being said Dehaka was the last global hero we have had. He was brought into the Nexus in March of 2016. Which means it is getting close to three years since our last global hero.

Could we get a hotkey to temporarily increase the size of the minimap?

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:26 AM PDT

It would be great to have a hotkey that, while held, would significantly increase the size of the minimap overlay.

This would enable more people to quickly and efficiently check the minimap.
