Weekly /r/Games Discussion - What have you been playing, and what do you think of it?

Posted: 05 Aug 2018 02:09 PM PDT

Please use this thread to discuss whatever you've been playing lately (old or new, any platform, AAA or indie). As usual, please don't just list the names of games as your entire post, make sure to elaborate with your thoughts on the games. Writing the names of the games in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names.

Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a game's plot that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is).

Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

For a subreddit devoted to this type of discussion during the rest of the week, please check out /r/WhatAreYouPlaying.

Live on Twitch: a team of humans in the 99.95th-percentile of Dota 2 players will be taking on a five man OpenAI team. While the game will be played under some restrictions, this is the most ambitious test of OpenAI Five to date.

Posted: 05 Aug 2018 01:37 PM PDT

https://www.twitch.tv/openai

Team Human consists of Blitz, Capitalist, Fogged, Merlini, and Moonmeander; a collection of analysts, pro, and former pro players.

The game restrictions include a limited hero pool, no Divine Rapier or bottle purchases, no summons/illusions, no scanning, and five invulnerable couriers limited to only item delivery.

While this isn't the complete Dota experience by any means, it will be very interesting to see how the OpenAI learning model has interpreted the set of rules set forth. At the very least, we're sure to see some really weird stuff from the OpenAI team.

More information on the OpenAI team and the event can be found at https://blog.openai.com/openai-five-benchmark/

What games have been saved (or ruined) by their updates?

Posted: 05 Aug 2018 09:15 AM PDT

Shigeru Miyamoto once said that "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad". With day-0 patches and the potential for frequent and/or significant updates being in vogue in the gaming community, Miyamoto's statement is less valid today than ever before. Games now have the potential to be a very different product than what they launched as. No Man's Sky is the one on everyone's minds at the moment, as the NEXT update is causing NMS to see a dramatic positive swing in opinion, but they aren't the first or last game to see a major content expansion or "megapatch" that makes sweeping changes to the game. Similarly, Tripwire Interactive's Killing Floor 2 has recently seen a change that adds a new enemy type and a weapon upgrade system - however, these changes are being viewed negatively by some in the community who feel the new enemy clashes with the existing roster and that the upgrade system goes against the spirit of the game.

What other games have seen significant post-launch changes that have had a positive or negative impact on perception? A few points of food for thought:

  • Has a "megapatch" or expansion caused you to buy a game you were on the fence over?
  • Some games have seen significant fixes bundled alongside a paid expansion. Is it ethical, unethical, or good or bad business sense to push a paid expansion alongside "fixing the game"?
  • Have you passed on a game because it was in a bad state at launch, and the updates were "too little, too late" to change your mind?
