Overview

GSL vs. the World is a 16-player tournament that pits 8 of the best WCS non-Korean players against 8 of the best Koreans in a single-elimination bracket. The event is one of three tournaments by Blizzard that pits the two scenes against each other, alongside IEM Katowice and Blizzcon, and this is its second iteration in its current form. Before the finals, there is a team match between these 16 players. This year, they have been split into Team Maru (the highest-ranked Korean player) and Team Serral (the highest-ranked non-Korean player), with both teams having four Koreans and four non-Koreans and all matches will be Koreans vs non-Koreans.

The grand finals will feature Korean Protoss player Kim "Stats" Dae Yeob facing off against Finnish Zerg player Joona "Serral" Sotala. Stats made it to the finals by beating Chinese Protoss Cyan, Mexican Terran SpeCial, and (the highest-ranked) Korean Terran, Maru. Serral made it to the finals by beating Brazillian Terran Kelazhur, Korean Terran INnoVation, and Korean Zerg Dark.

The event's casters are Dan "Artosis" Stemkoski, Nick "Tasteless" Plott, Leigh "Maynarde" Mandalov, and Kevin "Rotterdam" van der Kooi.

Non-Korean results in Korea

Two years ago we had the first non-Korean ever win a Korean StarCraft II tournament when American Protoss Neeb won a KeSPA Cup. Today, we have the second ever non-Korean in a Korean event finals with Finnish Zerg Serral, and the first European to do it. Both of them have found huge success outside of Korea to accompany their success in Korea (Neeb won 3 of 4 WCS non-Korean events in a single year in 2017, Serral has won all 3 of the year so far). And since the KeSPA Cup was organized by KeSPA/SPOTV, this is the first time we've had a non-Korean in a GSL/Afreeca grand finals.

However, in recent seasons non-Koreans have been having increasing success in Korea, with Canadian Zerg Scarlett reaching the quarterfinals (Ro8) of GSL Code S, a first for non-Koreans for the past five years. Additionally, each season this year has had multiple non-Koreans make it into GSL Code S and this year this includes two players making it to the group stage (Ro16) so far. So this grand finals appearance by Serral, and him being favored by many to win it, makes this somewhat of a culmination of the long-running storyline of Korean domination. Of course, many point out that Serral stands head and shoulders above all other non-Korean players, but this is most definitely an incredibly exciting and historic StarCraft II finals.

A bit of an amplifier to this is last year's GSL vs. the World where no non-Korean did anywhere nearly as well, and in the Team Battle the Koreans won 7-1
