CS:GO Glicko-2 Elo Rankings

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:35 PM PDT

If you don't care about background at all and just want the results scroll down a bit.

So I wrote a program to find Glicko-2 rankings for the CS:GO professional scene. If you don't know what that is, Glicko-2 is a rating system that uses elo to score teams or players, one example of a Glicko=2 rating system is chess.

I created a program that could simulate the Glicko-2 rating process, and ran it for every major international lan in 2018 so far (everything before IEM Shanghai). The way this works is upon appearing at their first lan that year, every player is given a default rating and rating deviation (1500 and 350). Each teams' elo is the average of their players elo. Then, when a team wins a match, I simulate each player on each team winning/losing a match against each player on the other team. This is the result:

Rankings:

  1. Astralis: (rating: 2139)

  2. Natus Vincere: (rating: 1938)

  3. Liquid: (rating: 1868)

  4. mousesports: (rating: 1838)

  5. fnatic: (rating: 1817)

  6. FaZe Clan: (rating: 1804)

  7. BIG: (rating: 1793)

  8. North: (rating: 1789)

  9. Ninjas in Pyjamas: (rating: 1765)

  10. OpTic: (rating: 1730)

  11. HellRaisers: (rating: 1729)

  12. Rogue: (rating: 1720)

  13. compLexity: (rating: 1713)

  14. Space Soldiers: (rating: 1709)

  15. MiBR: (rating: 1705)

Other notable teams:

20 - G2: (rating: 1662)

21 - Cloud 9: (rating: 1661)

22 - NRG: (rating: 1655)

Some other important things:

  • If you're mad that a team like Rogue or NiP is so high up after not doing so hot this year, It's because they just played the major qualifiers which boosted their elo quite a bit. Any weird variations like that should be fixed after the major.

  • This ranking system right now is pretty open to elo-farming. What I mean is if a good team goes to a larger tournament with lots of lower-tier teams new to the international scene, and they win handily, their elo skyrockets. I can't really fix this without also running every lower tier lan and online league, along with top level online matches. Because I have to type everything by hand, I'm not going to do this

  • This means teams that did super well at some lower tier events early in the year (Space Soldiers) have a higher elo than they probably should, but I don't have any form of ranking decay at the moment so no way to fix this.

  • This system also really really rewards playing more matches. So a team like Rogue or compLexity (who have played a lot of events and qualifiers recently), is doing better than Cloud 9 because c9 have only played a few tournaments recently and they didn't do amazing, whereas coL and Rogue did great in their matches.

  • I'm ignoring WESG right now, because when I run those matches it really screws with elo. If I didn't then Wololos would be like the 7th best team in the world by elo (because of the elo farming above). This doesn't really affect the rankings much

  • Glicko-2 involves rating deviation. That basically means the system is 95% sure a team's elo is between their rating - rating deviation, and rating + rating deviation

  • If you want to see team's rating deviation, or take a look at the program and read some more, I've posted the whole thing to GitHub here: https://github.com/rocketPowered/CS-GO-Glicko-2-Rankings

Hopefully, I can improve this system over time and we'll get more accurate rankings in the future if people want more of these. I can also answer questions in this thread if there are any

FACEIT major should have #1 and #2 seeds on opposite side of knockout bracket, not same side as initially thought per rulebook
