Hope you've all had a great week <3 The reveal of the 2019 Ranked system's hit the community and there's a ton of great discussion - the reduction in divisions from 5 to 4, the two new tiers and position-specific rankings have got people talking (PS, if you have no clue what I'm talkin' about - no worries! New Shurelya's and Rammus Interaction Posted: 27 Apr 2018 06:21 AM PDT When I used the Shurelya's active on Rammus, it stops my Q channel. Not only that but if I use the active before using my Q, it won't let me use Q until the Shurelya's duration is over. Why did Riot make it work this way?? Old Shurelya's never had this kind of interaction. Other movement items like righteous glory don't have this interaction. So why does shurelya's? Give rammus some love and let me go super fast. W: Sion has birds surround him creating a shield until they fly off. E: Sion shouts causing grass and little animals to fly out in special effect. R: Sion summons a rhino and charges down lane. Instead of a battle cry the sound should be a stampede. Homestart/Homeguard: Sion rides an elephant, wildebeest, ect. to differentiate it from his ult rhino. Why positional ranked isn't (or at least shouldn't be) gameable Posted: 27 Apr 2018 10:32 AM PDT A lot of people are worried about the gameability of this new positional ranked system. For anyone living under a rock, here's the situation: Player A is a Diamond player mid laner and a silver jungler. He queues up for jungle then tells the mid laner what's up. That mid laner happily switches with him and the diamond player stomps the game. The above is a justifiable concern. A poorly designed system would permit this (at first... more on that in a moment). But a well designed system won't permit this. It's actually an outgrowth of an algorithm they already have in place so we know they can do it. Basically, each game is currently already setup to maximize happiness. Each configuration of a game is checked to insure that no role swaps could happen that would lead to higher or equal happiness for all players. We know this is the case because when it was first released, it didn't work this way. You'd somewhat frequently find yourself in lobby with your secondary role only to discover that another person had their secondary role and if you swapped you'd both have your primary. Riot put in a system to avoid this so now it should never happen (you shouldn't be in your secondary role with a fill player in your primary role either). The new matchmaking system should function in the same way. Take the following example: The following 9 people all queue up for ranked simultaneously. Player A: 1450 ADC, 1350 Jungler Player B: 1445 Mid, 1340 Jungle Player C: 1455 ADC, 1360 Jungle Player D: 1450 Mid, 1330 Jungle Player E: 1460 Top, 1325 Jungle Player F: 1465 Top, 1390 Jungle Player G: 1450 Support, 1320 Jungle Player H: 1470 Support, 1330 Jungle Player I: 1445 Jungle A jungler is needed. So the matchmaking engine starts scouring for a jungler. Ultimately it finds two leftover players from a couple divisions higher Player J: 1570 ADC, 1450 Jungle Player K: 1550 Top, 1460 Jungle In this case, the algorithm would look at possible teams and realize that Player J should be rejected. No matter which team Player J was placed on, there would be the opportunity to switch roles with the ADC and add ~20 points to the team's overall ELO ranking. On the other hand, pairing Player K with Player E, ensures that any role swap would yield a significant hit to total ELO for the team. So the algorithm would then start with player K and E on the same team and build up from there. By checking to ensure no role swap could yield an improved chance to win, Riot ensures that role swaps during champ select are kept to an absolute minimum. What about duo queuing and then role swapping? That's relatively easy to monitor for. If two players duo queue jungle/mid or adc/support, you can algorithmically spot if they're switching and issue a warning and then a penalty very quickly. A halfway decently designed system should be relatively easy to be made ungameable and the queue time improvements should more than make up for the increased matchmaking scrutiny.
