Halo 5's maps are one of the weakest elements of the game

Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:18 PM PDT

There was a thread posted a few months ago about how Halo 5 has both a high skill floor and low skill ceiling, and how this has the effect of ostracizing both competitive AND casual players. Here is that thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/halo/comments/7hjhlb/halo_5_is_not_too_competitive_nor_is_it_too_casual/

One of the other things I believe harms this game a lot are the maps. The maps in Halo 5 simply are not very good for two main reasons:

  1. Lack of variety in the layout and flow
  2. Lack of variety in the aesthetics/look of the maps

Lack of variety in the layout and flow: The first problem is that most of these maps play almost exactly the same way. They seem to lack the concept of power positions that the old Halos had. Examples:

  • Halo 2's Lockout has the BR tower which offers a lot of defensive positions to take cover, ammo for your BR, and good angles on snipe tower, bottom mid and lift. A lot of the flow of that map was a struggle to gain control of BR tower while being able to maintain control of the sniper.

  • Wizard/Warlock from Halo 1/Halo 2. This is a perfect example of a simple symmetrical map done correctly. The map is centered around a "high" level and a "low" level as well as 4 teleporters. The strategy for winning is mostly about controlling the top and/or flanking the opponent using the portals.

  • Ivory Tower from Halo 2. This map is great example of an asymmetrical map that flows really well. Once again, this map is usually about maintaining control of the sniper platform, while still being able to maintain control of rockets which are located on the middle floor.

These are just 3 examples of great maps from the old Halos which had the concept of power points on the map which dictated the flow of the game. The strategy was NOT just about out-gunning your opponent; if you had a better understanding of how to control the map, you could win even if your gunplay wasn't as solid.

I believe that the Halo 5 maps lack this concept of power positions. Most of the maps feel very disjointed and lack flow. The lack of power positions means most of the encounters are somewhat random in nature, and winning a fight doesn't really give you a positional advantage. Moreover, almost all of the Halo 5 maps seem to be designed in the same manner, making them all feel exactly the same. Switching from one map to another doesn't usually require you to employ a different strategy, it's all about outgunning your opponent.

Onto my other point, lack of variety in the aesthetics/look of the maps: almost all of the Halo 5 maps are variations of an ODST theme, with the same colors, same geometry and same assets. The result of this is that many of the maps lack the "fun" factor of playing on them, since they are not visually appealing at all and since they all look the same. I don't think there's really much to say here since I believe other people have brought this up many times.

In short, I think one of the biggest weaknesses of Halo 5 is the maps. They lack variety in their layout and their aesthetics. Both of these factors make the maps not feel very fun to play on, which significantly reduces the longevity of the game. I hope that 343 will take a different approach in Halo 6, studying some of the iconic maps from the old Halo games as a source of inspiration.

Please let me know what you guys think, and whether you agree or not. I am very interested in talking about the Halo maps.

If someone was to build a warthog. Would they be better off using the 343 design or Bungie's design?
