  • Did you play Bayonetta? Did you like it? Why or why not?

  • How does it compare to other games from 2017?

  • (I have to admit, the soundtrack is infectiously catchy.)

Just finished “Hollow Knight” and “Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition”

Posted: 05 Dec 2017 12:49 AM PST

First things first: Both of these games are fantastic metroidvania games, and I greatly enjoyed both, but for different reasons.

Hollow Knight presented a GIGANTIC map for the player to explore and literally get lost in. The player is pretty much free to go anywhere and complete most areas in the order desired. This allowed a lot of freedom to the player, but I actually feel like the level design and direction of the game suffered a bit as a result of this freedom.

In contrast, Ori generally laid out a destination and the player would pick up abilities along the way to help accomplish that goal. I appreciated this because it meant the areas could be designed with that ability in mind. In contrast, a lot of Hollow Knight's areas didn't necessarily need the abilities I found there; a lot of the areas were just rooms to connect the rest of the map together.

Hollow Knight has boss fights whereas Ori has puzzles that need to be solved and subsequent timed escapes of the area. I enjoyed both, but thought some bosses in Hollow Knight were tedious (Mantis Lords and Soul Master, particularly since the save points are far and I died a lot). Dung Defender and Zote were particularly fun and memorable. Ori's escape sequences were a lot of fun with frantic music imploring me to hurry up only to inevitably die, but saves at the start of the sequences kept it from being annoying.

Both games feature great soundtracks, and I've spent hours listening to both, but I feel Ori's is the more beautiful of the two. Hollow Knight's Queen's Gardens and City of Tears are great on their own, but the entire Ori soundtrack works around its central theme, blending it to form emotion, action, and even a sense of urgency during appropriate times in the game.

As far as value and replay value, there's a lot more content in Hollow Knight. I put in over 30 hours into Hollow Knight, whereas Ori took me about 10 hours. However, despite enjoying both games, I do feel like I enjoyed Ori's quality to Hollow Knight's quantity.

On the graphics front, I definitely liked Ori's visuals more. I don't often see games as art, but Ori was so beautiful and the music was so good that I found myself seeing it as such.

tl,dr: Play both. However, if you can only play one: if you like exploration or boss fights, play Hollow Knight. If you like aesthetics, a linear story, puzzles, and a thematic soundtrack, play Ori and the Blind Forest.

Developer: Atlus

Publishers: Atlus USA, Deep Silver

Trailer/Review Scores/Discussion

Persona 5 is a role-playing video game developed by Atlus for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 video game consoles. Persona 5 is chronologically the sixth installment in the Persona series, which is part of the larger Megami Tensei franchise. Published by Atlus in Japan and North America and by Deep Silver in Europe and Australia, the game was released first in Japan in September 2016, and worldwide in April 2017.

Persona 5 takes place in Tokyo, and follows the player-named protagonist after his transfer to the fictional Shujin Academy after being put on probation for an assault of which he was falsely accused. During the course of a school year, he and other students awaken to their Persona powers, become masked vigilantes dubbed the "Phantom Thieves of Hearts", and explore the supernatural Metaverse realm to steal ill intent from the hearts of adults. As with previous titles in the series, the party does battle with supernatural enemies using manifestations of their psyche called Personas. The game incorporates role-playing elements and dungeon exploration alongside social simulation scenarios.
