New Leader For America in Rise and Fall.

Posted: 04 Dec 2017 09:55 AM PST

I know a lot of people are suspecting Abraham Lincoln or George Washington to be new leaders for America, but I think that Franklin Delano Roosevelt would have a better utilization of new mechanics. When talking about American history the Great Depression can arguably be called a 'dark age' for America, and the time after the depression could be seen as a 'heroic age.' I believe that if firaxis wants to add a new leader that utilizes new mechanics FDR would be a great choice. He brought a country out of economic debt and into military superiority in the second world war. Of course they may bring back old leaders like George and Abe, but I still think FDR should not be overlooked as a potential leader.

Civ 6 RaF: Korea video likely dropping tomorrow

Posted: 04 Dec 2017 02:03 PM PST

Background

Based on the heavy Korean imagery in the RaF release trailer, I created a post giving my initial reasons why I thought that a possible Korea inclusion in RaF was likely.

In summary, the trailer showed a crown on Sean-daughter that was used by the rulers of the ancient Korean kingdom of Silla. One of Silla's more prominent rulers was Queen Seondeok of Silla, whose reign was noted by events similar to those being added in RaF.

My Reasoning

Fast forward to today, the @civgame twitter posted this short video, featuring a number of elements that I shall dissect thusly.

The video started with a croaking frog, likely an allusion to the tale of Queen Seondeok's premonition of the Frogs at the Jade Gate. This legend states that Queen Seondeok once heard a mass of croaking frogs by the west gate of her palace, and thus was able to predict an attack by the rival kingdom of Baekje.footnote 1

The video then showed a brief selection of a map, next to drawings of a flower. The map seems to show the very southeast corner of the Korean peninsula, where the Silla Kingdom was based.footnote 2 In that same shot, the drawings of the flower look similar to the blossom of the peony flower, which was also the subject of a legend involving Queen Seondeok. According to the Samguk Sagi(a history of the three kingdoms(one of which was Silla)), Emperor Taizong of the Tang dynasty sent the Silla court peony seeds and a picture of the blossom. Queen Seondeok, then only a young girl, said that the flower was beautiful, but that it was a shame it did not smell, as she had inferred from the fact the drawing had no butterflies or insects around the flower. This tale was used to show her intellect.footnote 3

Lastly and most confusingly, there is an octogon, inside a star inside a rectangle. This structure seems to be emitting some sort of beam. While writing this I literally just realized what this image is. The symbol is that of a star painted on a burning kite. In 647, Bidam, a Silla nobleman, revolted on the principle of "a woman cannot rule". The earlier-mentioned Samguk Sagi says that during Bidam's rebellion, "a star fell from the heavens", and Bidam used this imagery to encourage his superstitious followers. Kim Yu-Sin, a high ranking general in Silla, advised the Queen to fly a burning kite to signal that the star had returned. The rebellion was then swiftly crushed by General Kim.footnote 4

In conclusion,

Korea tomorrow.

Footnotes & Sourcing

Most of these come from the Queen Seondeok wikipedia page.

  1. "There are two other accounts of Seondeok's unusual ability to perceive events before their occurrence. In the first it is said that Seondeok once heard a horde of white frogs croaking by the Jade Gate pond in the winter. She interpreted this as an impending attack from the Kingdom of Baekje (the croaking frogs were seen as angry soldiers) in the northwest of Silla (white symbolized the west in astronomy) at the Women's Valley (the Jade Gate was associated with women). When she sent her generals to the Women's Valley, they were able to capture two thousand Baekje soldiers."

  2. "Silla (57 BC[note 1] – 935 AD) (Hangul: 신라; Hanja: 新羅; RR: Silla Korean pronunciation: [ɕil.la]) was a kingdom located in southern and central parts of the Korean Peninsula. It was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, together with Baekje and Goguryeo. Silla was also one of the world's longest sustained dynasties. Although it was founded by King Hyeokgeose, the dynasty was ruled by the Gyeongju Kim (김, 金) clan for most of its 992-year history. It began as a chiefdom in the Samhan confederacies, once allied with China, but Silla eventually conquered the other two kingdoms, Baekje in 660 and Goguryeo in 668. Thereafter, Later Silla occupied most of the Korean Peninsula, while the northern part re-emerged as Balhae, a successor-state of Goguryeo. After nearly 1000 years of rule, Silla fragmented into the brief Later Three Kingdoms of Silla, Later Baekje, and Taebong, handing over power to Goryeo in 935.[2]"

  3. "It is believed that Seondeok's selection as her father's successor was justified by her displays of precocious intelligence when she was a princess. One such story (both in Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa) recounts that her father received a box of peony seeds from the Emperor Taizong of Tang accompanied by a painting of what the flowers looked like. Looking at the picture, the young Seondeok remarked that while the flower was pretty it was a shame that it did not smell. "If it did, there would be butterflies and bees around the flower in the painting." Her observation about the peonies' lack of scent proved correct — just one of many illustrations of her intellect and hence of her ability to rule."

  4. "In the first lunar month of 647, Bidam led a revolt with the slogan that "female rulers cannot rule the country" (女主不能善理).[8] Samguk Sagi says that during Bidam's uprising, a star 'fell'. Bidam used it to encourage his followers, saying that it was a sign of the end of the Queen's reign. On the other hand, Kim Yushin advised the Queen to fly a burning kite to signal that 'the star is back in its place'. After that, Kim Yushin's army defeated Bidam's rebel faction. only ten days after Bidam's uprising, he and 30 of his men were executed by Queen Jindeok of Silla on 26 February (Queen Seondeok died on 17 February, Jindeok was then proclaimed Queen of Silla)."

Do you have a favorite quote from the entire Civ series?

Posted: 04 Dec 2017 06:49 AM PST

Title.

Honestly, out of all the quotes the Civ series has (and it has a LOT), probably the one that stands out to me the most, is the quote you get from Civ V when you build the Red Fort wonder. There are times where I'm tempted to build it just for the quote alone.

"When we build, let us think that we build forever" - Elezea (Civ V credits it to John Ruskin though)

That quote, for me, describes the entire Civ series perfectly in just one sentence. Whether you are building cities, workers, wonders, a strong economy or religion, buildings, culture, or building an army...the building in the civ games never stops. From the planting of the capital, all the way to the victory screen, we are always building something, and planning on what we are building next. No matter what type of game you are playing, or which Civ game you are playing, this quote applies perfectly.

What about you guys? Do you have a favorite quote?
