How reasonable would it be for the 1.14 update to have animated waves on water?

Posted: 21 Nov 2017 04:27 PM PST

I don't necessarily mean texture change rather would it be possible to have the Ocean Block in water biomes be able to have waves so that the blog shape at the top changes and has an animation slightly.

It could have the game check if the chunk of ocean is deep ocean or ocean and has over 60blocks of water before it changes the top layers of water?

Idk I'm just brainstorming. Would be cool to have mini ripples and waves when players jump into water or when the waters in rivers it has a ambient wave animation but ocean has large waves? Idk.

This likely isn't possible or would be to intensive to make work but figured to ask if possible.

The New Water Physics in 1.14 may break stuff, but isn't that just a natural thing?

Posted: 21 Nov 2017 08:43 AM PST

I've seen a lot of people worried about how the new water physics will break a lot of stuff. But, isn't that natural? If you don't like the update because it's going to break redstone machines then, I think you're new to the game. Updates have been breaking stuff for years. Is it just me, or is the community getting worse as time goes on.

About Water Breaking Farms

Posted: 21 Nov 2017 07:54 AM PST

It's shocking the amount of hate directed at the idea of new mechanics because of what it could mean for old work. Let's consider some things:

1. This Probably Wont Break Your Farms.

The game does not constantly update all blocks. Water mechanics are changing, but I seriously doubt the block updates are. Chances are your water streams with signs wont break until you personally update them. Yes, some farms will have redstone that will trigger that, but not most. For the most part any existing use of it should be fine. You'll just have to get inventive with new ones, which might be more fun because

2. These New Mechanics Mean a Lot of Cool Mechanical Potential

We'll be able to make an item float or sink, presumably even in running water. With fences, trapdoors, etc, we'll be able to filter items in a stream. We can already place items on either side or in the middle with blocks like ender chests and panes. So we'll effectively have a water stream with 3 channels, we can raise or lower, and block any combination of them. You can have a water stream feed middle items forward and items on the left down. I'm sure there's a lot of clever things people will come up with.

In short water is becoming more complex and so water streams can behave in more complex ways.

3. You Are Not the Only Player

Realistically most players are children who will not at all be affected. Even out side of that, I would bet most players don't make heavy use of the things we'll see break. It's the silent majority. We've all been on servers. I only play on servers with adults who are competent at the game, and still most of them would not be affected negatively.

You know what all those people will get?

4. Better Water Aesthetics.

The ability to place plants, fences, iron bars, slabs, etc in water is HUGE for building. Water falls can go down gentle slopes for once and look good. We can build under water with something other than solid blocks. We can have ponds with more variation than just sand, dirt or gravel. It does so much for people who like building in this game. Are there people who'd rather not have to fix their water streams more than allow so many people have a better game?

5. Mojang Has Shown Maintaining Game Breaking Farms is Not A Priority

They've broken farms and exploits before. Remember booster carts? People used to have huge lengths of tracks with carts to bug you out into going faster. Then they added booster rails and broke the carts. We got over it.

When someone asked about optimizing exp orbs to fix performance at xp farms, one of the devs agreed with the idea "Maybe if you're breaking the game you should expect lag".

While definitely core for a lot of us and a big part of the game's appeal, maintaining game breaking farms should never handicap game development. We will find new water streams (and as I mentioned, probably better ones). We'll have our game breaking stuff again. But the maintenance of your sugar reed farm you copied from the internet just should not take priority of things like more complex water mechanics to make better water ways, or better buildings in water.

Maybe having more building materials than you know what to do with, turning your game into creative mode, isn't important. And guess what, it wont break anyways, so you still get to.

Torches VS Water in 1.14

Posted: 21 Nov 2017 09:06 AM PST

How about making water instead of washing away torches (and dropping them as items) to turn them off? Basically, if there's a water level higher than half-a-block in the block the torch is located, it "turns off", stopping to give off light and changing to a burnt-out texture. If the water drains to or less than half-a-block again, the torch is re-lit.

Bonus idea: Redstone Torches, which are engulfed in water with bubbles in it (meaning there's a Magma Block somewhere beneath the Redstone Torch and it's water column) can flicker every so often. Every 5th tick there is a 25% chance (false random can be applied, this is the only time in my game suggestions I actually feel like permitting it) for the "bubbled" Redstone Torch to flicker - gives off light for 1 less light level value for 1 tick, while also sending a 1-tick-long Redstone signal of a 1 less signal level value to connected blocks. If there are no bubbles in the water block currently engulfing the Redstone Torch, it is turned off as normal.

I had a strange dream last night about underwater caves in Minecraft. Thought I’d like to share.

Posted: 21 Nov 2017 08:17 AM PST

So last night I had a dream about random dream stuff, but the only part I remember is I was in Minecraft, supposedly after the Update Aquatic because I saw magma blocks with bubble columns and kelp plants.

It was of underwater caves that were below the bottom of a deep ocean I think. It was just tunnels of caves with magma blocks and bubble columns. I think these should be in the game, I don't know what they would have unique in them, but they would be pretty neat to be in the game.

I tried to recreate the scene I saw in my dream, just imagine the image I provided had kelp plants and bubble columns above the magma blocks.

Could we change the command block flair to a commands flair?

Posted: 21 Nov 2017 07:42 PM PST

Nowadays, eith duncrions, many people have stopped using command blocks. Since many things you may see flaired under command block might not even have a single command block, could we change it to "commands to generalise it?
