For those of you not at the event

Rural players during the catch challenges.

My girlfriend may have been a little annoyed with how Niantic ran Pokefest today.

In regards to Telcom issues, just a reminder that AT&T and Verizon would rather spend millions fighting Net Neutrality than making sure their infrastructure can handle large events

Posted: 22 Jul 2017 04:44 PM PDT

[Discussion] If Nintendo/Game Freak scrapped Pokemon Go and started over entirely with another company I'd be perfectly fine with that. Even if it meant starting from level 1 again.

Posted: 22 Jul 2017 03:41 PM PDT

I'm level 32. Been playing pretty consistently since release. I'm not a hardcore player by any stretch but I still feel like I have a lot of time and energy invested in this game. I would be 100% fine with a complete reboot of this game with another developer even if it meant restarting at level 1. I'd welcome it.

Despite the shitshow, can we at least give it up for this guy?

Niantic CEO gets not so warm response at Pokemon Go Fest

[Go Fest] They made my friend throw away his meds to enter

Posted: 22 Jul 2017 03:45 PM PDT

So me and my friend drove from Des Moines, IA for Go Fest today and to preface my friend has a herniated L4 and L5 disc so he takes muscle relaxer pills for his back pain. After reading the allowed and not allowed list on their website it doesn't say anything about medication they made my friend throw away his entire medication or take it to our car which was 35 minutes away without traffic. So he had to toss his entire prescription.

I don't understand how they will allow you to bring your prescription on an airplane with a proper ID but not to this event. My friend wasn't the only person who had this issue. There were loads of people who had no idea since they never decided to let us know we can't bring medication into the event.

Edit: His prescription had his name on it.

Niantic is really showing their true colors.

Posted: 22 Jul 2017 11:00 AM PDT

After watching their "CEO" give his speech he obviously shown his concerns for the game... It's actually extremely disheartening seeing this unfold. His speech showed zero passion/interest for the game and its players. Standing there in complete silence at certain points was incredibly frustrating. You have people all over the world that have flown out there and this short speech of silence is all you can give? It was his time to shine to show the POGO community how much he cares and NOPE.

Next frustration is that their preparation for this event is beyond me. Failed servers on your event? Apparently from the CEO stating that they have been preparing this event for months. How can the servers be failing at this time? Do they actually not test anything before they release the game? These players have spent QUITE a bit of money to come out to this event and they have to deal with server issues of all things. I cannot imagine how the raid events will turn out.

Speaking of which, I cannot imagine Niantic not releasing the "mystery" event. It should be compulsory that they release this "mystery" event world wide despite reaching a goal or not. It would be a massive let down and honestly waste of money (To those who have gone to the event) if this were to happen.

The streams have also shown a great disconnect from the community as Niantic made a choice to silent chats on the stream and provide no content aside from some awkward chats. Despite trolls, spammers, etc. You shouldn't limit your stream chat from speaking out.

TLDR: Niantic has really shown that they are incapable of understanding a community. You have people shouting at their CEO to "fix the game" and his response to this is that he would probably just walk off the stage greet a couple of people and head back to his hotel room until he is needed again.

Edit: Grammatical changes such as Whom --> Who

Edit: Niantic is offered those who have been admitted into the area $100 in in-game currency.

Late update: Niantic instead of allowing their players to fight against Lugia as the mystery event, they will be receiving Lugia automatically in their account. Definitely the cherry on top of the anti climatic event. They do not even get to walk home that night with Lugia it comes later instead.

John Hanke needs to be fired

Posted: 22 Jul 2017 03:43 PM PDT

This isnt a rant or a rage filled diatribe, it's an honest assessment of the current state of the game and the company that runs it. Simply put, if i did as poorly at my job as publicly as John just did, I would be fired on the spot. Todays event is inexcusable. It would arguably be grounds for dismissal in a vacuum, but it certainly is when you take all the issues into account. I'm on mobile or I'd probably elaborate further but this was an incredible display of incompetence.

Edit: I'd like to add, that at this point, this would be the only acceptable action to restore my faith and willingness to spend money. Bribing the players with something that took them less than an a day to come up with is just insulting. I don't want a super event, I don't want a thousand dollars in in game currency (which costs them nothing by the way). I want real, meaningful, significant change at a foundational level.

Edit 2: to expand even further, i thought he should have been fired after he released a pokemon game, that was billed as the AR answer to the core games, without trading, pvp, training (as in raising a pokemon), or anything resembling strategy (button mashing gyms, come on). And i continued to believe it when a year and a billion dollars later we still have none of those things. This event was just the very public cherry on top.

This Go Fest livestream is painful

Posted: 22 Jul 2017 10:30 AM PDT

This is a true blend of /r/cringe and /r/LivestreamFail. Between the delays and the technical issues, you have one of the hosts explaining the concept of "Savage Season", where you nanab a pokemon and catch it on the first ball. The crowd booed the CEO, and are now very very loudly chanting "We can't play!"

I have nothing better to do at GO Fest, AMA

Posted: 22 Jul 2017 12:47 PM PDT

It's honestly really sad here. There are three things preventing us from playing.

  1. Cellphone service providers aren't dedicating enough bandwidth to the Chicago area 2 and 3. Are bugs in the game

AMA

Edit: I did get to meet Trainer Tips Nick which was fun, so don't feel TOO bad. I'm gonna leave the park for a while because of the increased spawn radius and because we can freely leave and enter now

Edit: People walking around the fest were able to do more all day than people inside because they could actually play what the actual fuck

One more edit: I just wanna point out all the backlash I got for complaining about how long the lines were on my last post vs all the support I got after I posted this lmao. Love ya guys

ANOTHER EDIT: EVERYONE HERE GETS LUGIA

If I was putting on a festival where internet was the key ingredient, I think I would have put more effort to making sure there was internet there...

Posted: 22 Jul 2017 12:37 PM PDT

They're willing to give $2,000,000 in pokecoins afterward. What if they would have put a little more effort in beforehand? Two million would probably put together a pretty awesome temporary wifi mesh network... Or perhaps they could have paid the cell companies to use some of their mobile towers? (ie http://about.att.com/mediakit/events )

They talk about talking to cell companies while the disaster is happening. Did they even work with them beforehand? Come on Niantic. You knew how many people would be there.

I can just see Niantic's planning meeting. "Do you think there will be enough cell coverage?" "The city has almost 3 million people, of course it has enough coverage for 20,000 people." "Maybe we should call and check." (calls regular support for verizon) "Can your network handle 20,000 cell phones at one time in Chicago? Oh, so you have the most robust network available in Chicago? Ok, great, thanks." click "We're good to go, guys!"

Happy Pogo fest everyone!

A positive element of Pogo Fest

Posted: 22 Jul 2017 03:04 PM PDT

The food was really good. I was expecting to see the usual unhealthy options that you see at big events - but almost every 'restaurant' offered a good option - I had the tofu veggie rice bowl for lunch and was contemplating a veggie hotdog before deciding to leave after the app crashed for the hundredth time while trying to catch an unown. Good job offering healthy options for a game that promotes healthy activity!
