Played my first four Unranked games

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 06:48 AM PDT

I started to play HOTS last week when I was casually browsing MOBAs. I come from SMITE, so I'm familiar with how they work but was a little worried about how my skills would translate to the RTS view - even though I was an avid SC2 player.

The game drew me in as all Blizzard games tend to do. What was my alternate choice (DOTA2 was first but it just didn't feel right for me) quickly became something that sucked me in over last weekend altogether. Although I was only playing vs AI with groups, I loved the feel. However, I was entirely skeptical of how real games would play. You know, when dumb AI doesn't run into my skills.

Well last night I queued for Unranked draft. I figured by now I had a good grasp on a handful of heroes that seemed rather easy to use: Uther, Arthas, Kael'thas, Thrall, Valla, Malfurion, Xul, Artanis, and Tassadar - the latter being a bit more difficult to remain viable with.

So the match queued and I thought to myself, "Just play support and shadow a good player. You'll be ok."

I had last pick. I had ban power. It was my very first game and I was now thrust into the position to get ridiculed for making a terrible ban. But I figured I'd just ban the heroes that seemed logical, or at least ridiculous.

I banned Uther right off the bat fearing the other team would pick him. I wanted to fall back on Malfurion but I was last pick - would he still be around? Surely he would, right? It'll be fine. The other team bans Mael (that op assasin) and then I randomly ban Tracer, even though she may not be worth the ban.

The last picks are left and then the other team locks in Malfurion. I'm screwed. Who the hell am I going to play as support? I eye Tassadar. Our tank swaps to Artanis. I lock in Tass and the game starts.

I know there is a chance I'll look like an idiot. But the game unfolds and I follow Artanis, hop lanes to support the other heroes, but we're losing. We get pushed back to the core but I'm not playing all too bad - or maybe I am. I'm still new.

We push back and a huge team fight breaks out in the center. We're all level 20 at this point and I start to make some clutch wall offs to prevent melee from chasing down certain targets. My shield seems to work well with Artanis. My psi storm starts racking up kills and I haven't died. The enemy team can't get me because I shift away at the right times. Props to the peels I got the entire game.

Enemy heroes start to die and we push to the core and we win! It's a huge comeback and the entire team is stoked.

I'm just happy I didn't drop the ball. A loss turned to a win and then the screen turns to the MVP page. It's Tassadar! I'm blown away and get all the up votes. What the hell just happened?!

The entire game was fun and I can't believe I haven't even tried HOTS until recently. I played some more this morning and racked up three more wins. Each game a blast.

I just wanted to pop on here and tell my story of a new player that appreciates this great game.

Just played master promo with someone who hadn't played HL since preseason.

On top of that we had two guys who hadn't seeded yet, and I still managed to ALSO get a -16 point reduction for "favored adjustment"... What the hell?

Blizzard has to chose between either enforcing strict comp rules for Quickmatch or ending the seeding to Hero League. Having both is one of tge root causes of the current terrible HL experience.

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 06:40 AM PDT

Edit: dang it the title I actually spell proofed it

Edit 2: well, if anything, considering that the Draft is really important and something you need to learn, the seed should come from Unranked then.

It's no secret that Quickmatch is not a mode to try to win. In the long run you will have more fun if you just see it as training ground for heroes, but one that will not translate into drafted modes.

I just had a game against Genji Tracer D.Va Liming Illidan with a team with not a single mobility ability. I'm talking Raynor Nova Murky Butcher and Jaina. (BTW didn't we have a no Nova+murky rule or something?)

We won cause for once I (Nova) managed to kill someone without being blown to bits before my second autoattack came out. It was really lucky. None of our team ended up in the MVP screen. It was the single most boring match I've played in this game and for the first time I felt a huge urge to just go take a shit and let it end. I didn't cause I hate leavers and love myself.

No one fom my team left, I guess because we were so stomped from minute 1 that there was no one to blame. We tried, we did our best, we were much more coordinated in terms of objective so we actually payed the first one (spoder tomb).

But whenever there was a Team Fight, the enemy would just kinda passively win, due to their heroes. They were all scattered in the map and when any sort of TF started BAM all of their team was there cause guess what woosh teleport dash dash dash teleport fly.

It's Ok, I know Blizzard has no intention in making QM an actually enjoyable game mode, but then where do I go to? UD has become QM 2.0 cause even the worst from QM learned what a shit hole it is and decided to play their favourite hero somewhere else.

So Hero League, the one supposed to be fine and competitive. Except QM Genji spammers with 200 games played are placed with you, with more than 4k games and all sorts of heroes and roles mastered.

Yes, I climb out of them, while having the worst time in a competitive game mode I can think of.

So I'm inevitable left with the conclusion that, if QM is to stay the fuck everything game mode it is, then Blizzard should pretend it doesn't exist for the purposes of other game modes. ESPECIALLY HERO LEAGUE.

Does anyone agree with me?

The best thing I've ever done to enjoy Heroes of the Storm is to stop playing Hero League

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 12:59 PM PDT

It seems lately that this subreddit doesn't go a single day without having a topic regarding the frustration of Hero League get voted to the top. I won't argue with it, Hero League is a terrible experience for a lot of players right now, between the toxic player behavior, leavers, lack of communication in draft or in game, it's no wonder people are so frustrated. I was one of those people, so a few weeks ago I decided to just stop playing HL altogether and see if I could have a better experience in Team League.

I put a post on the r/lookingforheroes subreddit and on the Discord, within a few hours I already had enough responses from players with a similar experience level and mindset to form a 5 man team. We've been playing for 3 weeks now, and I honestly have never had this much fun in HotS. We're doing well in TL and I've already been promoted once, but even the games where we lose have still been fun and we've learned a ton those losses. Using Discord we easily can make smart draft choices, call shots and make quick decisions on when to push, gank, peel, etc. And no-one talks shit on our team mates, gets tilted and throws or leaves the game.

We've had a couple nights where someone couldn't show, so we've filled their spot on the fly. Now I'm ending up with some great people who are now filling up my friends list as other friends to play with.

I can't say it enough, if you're sick of Hero League, put yourself out there and get a team together to play Team League.

There should be "Starcraft Legends" portraits such as Diablo and Warcraft.

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 04:11 AM PDT

I think those portrait look very good, but it feels sad that Starcraft doesn't have any special portrait, such as Diablo and Warcraft. Also since "Warcraft Legends" portraits and "Diablo Legends" portraits are all based on old artworks, I decided to make a list of artwork who could be good to adapt for the "Starcraft Legends" portraits:

-Kerrigan 1

-Kerrigan 2

-Zagara

-Tassadar Archon

-Artanis

-Zeratul

-Alarak

-Raynor

-Tychus

-Nova

If you have any other suggestion, do not hesitate to add it, I will edit this post so they can be seen by everyone

Advanced Abathur tips

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 06:19 AM PDT

Most of you already know essential aba skills like body soaking, symbiote resets and merc soloing. Here are some less impactful little tips for those who want to get maximum value with Abathur.

I have 1800 aba games and play in Diamond (56% HL WR). Some tips may seem like they only work against noobs but I suggest you to try them a few times as you are likely overestimating your opponents.

Game start

  • There is a tradition to brawl at the middle at the start of each game. You can get a good value out of it by soaking mid and bot while your team tries to send a message to enemy. Inform your team that you soak both lanes and they can fight (obviously not over committing 4v5) and enemy team is likely to overstay and lose some xp when they think that your team doesn't soak either (at least at ranks below master).
  • At the very beginning you can give your team some edge by placing mines at mid lane on the enemy half (like this). Don't use Z before placing mines to save time so that they arm before enemy team reaches their gate. Especially useful if you have heroes like Stitches.
  • On maps with middle watchtower close to gates (like BHB) you can burrow and capture watchtower and nope out before both teams arrive to middle giving your team a slight edge in fight at game start. Obviously check for Globals/Lucio/Malthael on enemy team before doing that.

Objectives

  • Most abathurs I've seen seem to neglect the fact that they can take a many objectives by themselves. Here is my old video how to capture shrines in ToD.
  • Same strat works perfectly on Warhead Junction
  • On BHB you can take small coin camps from lvl 1. Coupled with the fact that you are global you can hoard lots of gold. Periodically ping your team to cap watchtower so that you can collect small camps on top when they spawn. And don't forget to take free chests if they are uncontested or when your teammate can zone for you while you are slapping it down.
  • When enemy is cursed on Cursed Hollow try to soak all enemy minion waves while your team pushes. You can estimate enemy minion position by looking at your own minion waves. Place some mines close to enemy core towards the end of curse to get additional xp from that last minion wave that you can't reach otherwise before curse ends. Remember that enemy will have a chance to kill minions accumulated near their gates after curse ends while your xp is lost forever if you miss minions during curse.
  • On Sky Temple you can take half of temple for free while its damage is low, just tank all the damage and then leave when hp is low. You can even hat your teammates elsewhere while big guy's displace is on cooldown. This also means that if enemy comes all 5 guards are already spawned so it's harder to deal with them. If you went locust build you can also solo full temple in late game.
  • If possible try to pick up gems after your teammate died on TotSQ, enemies will pretty often immediately leave that area. If big minion wave dies to your towers pick up those gems too.
  • When it's safe you can solo small seed camps on GoT, capture shrines on dragon Shire, and initially push payload closer to lane on Hanamura.
  • You can interrupt certain objectives by placing a mine under an enemy just when he starts channel. Or hatting nearby minion wave (or mule) and stabbing them.

Soak

  • Minions should never die to your towers unsoaked. If you see a minion wave approaching your towers in an empty lane, hat that tower or burrow to body soak it.
  • If you are solo laning and enemy is actively hitting minions you can sit behind the gate and passively collect xp from minions killed by towers while helping in some other lane with hat. Usually heroes will not do significant tower damage because of risk of being ganked. When tower ammo is depleted ask someone to switch lanes.
  • This also works well in QM if enemy aba has stronger locusts. They will outpush yours so you can safely soak behind the gate and bully him out of soak bush with mines.
  • If you took push or mine build it's better to double soak with hat before 10 during objectives. With symbiote and especially heal build your hat is strong enough to win early team fights so bodysoak and help team with hat.

General

  • Realize that your death is much less valuable for enemy than other heroes. You don't have to spend 15 seconds to walk from base, and your cooldowns keep ticking. Mine stack take 30+ sec to recharge and ult takes even more. So all you lose is 1-2 locust spawns, some hat uptime, and some xp (takedown xp is often overrated). So you can play very aggressively and you usually gain more than you lose if enemy occasionally manages to gank you. More often though enemies will just waste time chasing you and you escape or it ends up in 1 for 1 trade which is even more value.
  • Don't bother with protection from stealthies ganking you behind the gates before lvl 10, even if they succeed they don't gain much from it and if they fail or trade 1 for 1 you gain a lot. You can start putting mines around if they attempted it at least 2 times.
  • You can pull tower aggro from your teammates by placing mines (or mule) under a fort. Mines are considered summons and have priority over heroes
  • When soloing hard camps and pumpkins tank initial damage with your body and then step behind your locusts
  • Always keep a mine under bosses
  • Recognize when enemy aba ults to escape, in this case he leaves a puddle in the place he will reappear. Remember that his Z cooldown is ticking during his ult and it probably will be ready when he reappears. My favorite thing as aba in QM is to stack a bunch of mines on top of enemy aba's puddle for a nice surprise when his ult ends.
  • While making bush nukes is fun, it is usually less effective than spreading your mines all over the map so see and slow enemy rotations. A good idea is to mine up all the way from top to bottom on the enemy side of the map spreading mines evenly in choke points. Especially hilarious on Cursed Hollow when enemy starts going for tribute and after collecting all the mines on his way there ends up with 10% hp and has to hearth.
  • After one of (no so) recent patches you can hat summons, including hydralisks, turrets, azmodudes (especially useful with Battleborn talent)
  • Don't forget to slap the core when your team is winning

Do you have more tips to share?

Interesting PTR Design, all stukov level 20 talents are downgrades.

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 08:07 AM PDT

Bio-Explosion Switch makes using D stop E channel with a low pretty upside. If you don't take the level 20 talent, D key doesn't stop E channel.

Push Comes to Shove makes it so that you have armor less time and it reduces the time the enemy is stunned by reducing airtime.

Controlled Chaos makes it impossible to zone control since the swipe does very little damage and since its only one swipe instead of 3.

Other bugs:

Vigours Reuptake is baseline and the quest does nothing.

Massive Shove doesn't stop on Force Walls/Holy Grounds/Shrine Posts etc and keeps stunning until end of days.

Reactive Ballistospores stop working after you die.

I'm up for cool new designs, but 3 level 20 talents that make hero worse is too spicy even for me.

[BUG] Using abilities too fast after Vanish causes Valeera to use a basic ability.

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 09:47 AM PDT

Two moves you often use with Valeera are to use QDW to have a gap closeer before your stun. Another is to DQ for a burst of damage.

Both of these moves, when executed too fast, result in Valeera using Sinister Strike or Blade Flurry from out of stealth. This leaves you without energy bar, without Vanish, and without cooldowns.

http://i.imgur.com/v4XCjCt.jpg

Pretty easy to replicate; just go into try mode, and try to use QDW on the dummy. Half the time, when clicked fast enough, you'll break your own stealth and cast blade flurry instead of cheap shot.

I made this Arthas model comparison so people can understand it.

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 05:24 AM PDT

TL;DR: Arthas being chunky adds to in-game feeling of tanky. Bright colors make it easier to fit the game. Art teamknow better than us what is goof for the game. Yet, after 2 years he could be improved specially after Varian's model. The image is a comparison and NOT a suggestion: http://imgur.com/l46M00P

I really love the job blizz did with Arthas model in HoTS. It brings a lot of new details that adds to the concept. Personally, I like how it looks like in game, since being "chunky" inspire the "tank" feeling so nicely. If it is changed, we'll lose a lot of that feeling and thinking about design, it would be a big loss. But I'm pretty sure art team could improve his model now after new experiences within this specific game. The art team of hots is amazing but we know Arthas is a model that came back from the SC2 mode and team had no experience with this new design necessity since he was one of the first models built. I know the blues do not need this comparison, they know far better than us the issues of this model and how to improve it and they know the benefits of the actual model in game, but community should know better what's "wrong" with Arthas. He is not only chunky, but hiw forehead is big (not his entire head as most will say) and his is to bright, especially with big and colorful yellow borders around his armor. So here it goes:
