Learn Dota 2 - I'm up for showing a LoL player the basics

I'm up for showing a LoL player the basics

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 10:47 AM PDT

I'm bored and have about an hour to kill. Any league players that want to learn the basics and differences from LoL -> Dota I can show you. You'll need discord or TS and I want a LoL player in particular because previous Moba knowledge is handy and I know a bit about League.

Huskar support

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 03:03 PM PDT

I was thinking about busker in a support role. I was thinking about orb effects and how great they are for harassing so huskar instantly is able to zone offlaners along with having a mediocre heal makes him able to help a carry in lane. Also his passive gives magic resistance so he is a hard to kill support which is a huge bonus an example being ogre. His ultimate allows your support to deal a percentage based damage to there Tanky carry. I'm sure there is a reason we don't do it just can think of it lmao. Input?

Bristleback Itemization

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 01:29 PM PDT

I've been think about this for a while because I feel like my personal Bristle build isn't consistent or stable enough yet. I'll show my build to you all and you can critique it and tell me what I'm doing right and wrong.

Starting Items: Tango, Salve, Stout, Mango, Clarity

Early Game Items: Brown Boots, Soul Ring, Vanguard

Core Items: Treads, Sange & Yasha, Crimson Guard

Situational: Blademail, Aghs, Shiva's, Lotus

Extension: AC, Octarine, Heart

Luxury: BoTs, Radiance, Octarine #2, Abyssal

I haven't been going Solar Crest and I think that might be a problem. Gives three things Bristle really wants: more armor, more armor reduction, and more mana regen. It has such synergy with his kit, but it doesn't help me farm faster in my eyes, so I've been skipping it. If it really is that good, please further persuade me to pick it up so I can have a stronger sense of consistency with Bristle.

If you need any explanations, then ask me. I want Bristle to become one of my best, so please help me out.

Edit: My max order is quills first, then passive, then goo, then ult. I'm considering putting an early level into goo (I'm thinking at level 4) to be more aggressive early on at the cost of some tankiness or more stack damage.

How to deal with dual lanes as Crystal Maiden?

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 12:54 PM PDT

I've always wanted to try and learn CM and now that she has a really good winrate seemed the time to do so. I think I understand how to play her against a single offlaner, in which case you just stack, pull, and occasionally kill. (Although I've had carries complaining that I didn't zone the enemy WR instead of stacking and pulling.) I would just start with Frostbite and try to get my aura as quickly as possible.

But what do you do in a 2v2 lane scenario? If you level Frostbite first, you get your harassing spell at lvl 4 or something, which is way too late, and if you level Crystal Nova first, you lack mana to spam it anyways, and by just staying in lane trying to protect your carry, you either get very little xp or take them away from your carry, while trying to stack and pull always seems to lead to quick and horrible death. What do you do in that situation? And am I getting the basics right here?

Why are we getting Hand of Midas later now?

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 07:05 PM PDT

Hey guys, back in 2014 when I started playing Dota - for as long as I can remember, the general consensus for Hand of Midas as a carry was that it is an item you ideally would rush & get by the 6 min mark so it pays off itself early enough to be worth it or you'd skip it in favour of a cheap core item to help you fight eariler.

However, nowadays I'm quite often seeing it get much later typically by 9-10 min (after getting upgraded boots) sometimes up to 20 minute in the Very High Skill bracket!

So what I want to know is, what caused this change in attitude to Midas timing & why is nobody sarcastically pointing out the 10 minute midas that junglers are doing in 2/3k mmr games? Thanks in advance.

Having trouble understanding Lina (core)

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 07:56 AM PDT

2.5k. With Lina I feel strong in lane, extremely strong for wave control, and I feel good in ganking and teamfights once I have about 3 items (e.g. eul's + blink + bloodstone).

However, I get crushed midgame when I just feel like food. Unable to close the gap and catch enemies, and unable to defend myself if they catch me. I go e.g. 5/0 in the early game and then end the game 7/15.

Her strengths feel similar to TA (waveclear + glass cannon). TA is my favourite and strongest mid, but Lina feels more vulnerable in pretty much every way. Despite that, I know she's theoretically a better tower pusher and the pros seem to pick Lina more frequently than TA.

What am I missing about Lina's midgame? Thanks :)

Rationale on Earthshaker early-mid game itemization .

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 06:19 PM PDT

I have seen recently a mix of builds on earth shaker and was looking for reasoning on builds for different types of match-ups/play styles. Particularly around the boots choice + mana regen item.

I cannot get past 3.850 MMR. Help?

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 05:56 PM PDT

Hi everyone, my dotabuff account is https://www.dotabuff.com/players/60916824 and I mainly play HC. However, I don't have a problem playing support too... but the deal is that I can't get through 3.8k. It's been almost a month that I win 4 games in a row followed by loosing 4 games in a row too.

I'm trying everything, playing the meta heroes (Sven/Luna/Jugg), watching streamers... but it's getting so hard that I'm almost uninstalling dota.

Playing on a 13inch screen - precision difficulty

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 01:27 PM PDT

I'm only 1k mmr so im quite low skill, but do any better players also find it difficult to play on a 13inch screen? I play exclusively on my laptop and during teamfights it gets very difficult to click the right hero.
I usually pick heroes that split push or have AOE attacks for this reason, so I can avoid having to point target people in fights (or even just a-click if I have cleave). However if I random someone like PA or razor, it becomes very difficult. Does anyone have any other ways of managing this?

How do i play against invis heavy teams?

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 04:18 PM PDT

Whenever I play against line ups with heros like sf, nyx, slark, bounty hunter and riki, I feel very unsafe across the map when im alone. And because the enemy team usually split pushes so much, we are kinda forced to separate in order not to lose towers. I was wondering what the best way to play against his line up is.

this the recent match i had, i know the loss mostly had to do with me playing like absolute garbage, but advice would be appreiciated. Thank you!

Exort invoker early game ganking - when and why

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 12:17 PM PDT

Exort invoker has finally clicked for me and I've been having a blast playing him in my scrub tier games (2-3k) so far. To get good at invoker I've looked both here and /r/truedota2 for advice and everyone tells you to afk farm your aghs before you start fighting and really only help with sunstrike. Just use the search feature and type invoker and you will see what I'm saying.

The more games I've played, the more it feels like this is not particularly good advice, or at least not comprehensive enough to cover all situations. I'll outline why I think it's important to gank early and what's worked for me so far but I'd like some insight from better players to see if I'm on the right track.

Disclaimer#1: You probably don't want to gank for the first 5-6 minutes, but after that you should be good to do so since you should have quite a few levels in your e, q and w.

Disclaimer#2: If your team is doing fine in lanes, you probably don't need to gank and can just farm away. I think ganking is really only worth it, if your lanes are getting dominated too hard by the enemy and your team is asking you for help.

  1. Having your lanes lose early is bad, especially in this meta. Sure you might be able to 1v9 as invoker once you get your aghs and turn some fights around, but that's not realistic, especially if your skill is not far above the skill bracket you're playing in. You might be in a situation where you take down the enemy team, but now your entire team is dead every fight because they're just too weak and the enemy might have one or two stragglers in every team fight that you can't safely take out either. Sure, sunstrikes can help a lot, but if the lanes don't have reliable stun, then you're basically taking a risk that might not pay off and have less mana to help you hold your own in a lane in case of a gank/aggressive play by enemy midlaner on you.

  2. Confidence - dota is a team game. If you help your lanes, they're having a better time knowing you're willing to play with them and have their backs. Morale boosts are one of the more under appreciated aspects of team based games I think, especially in dota where games last 30+ minutes so maintaining morale can really turn around fights and games.

  3. It's really not that bad for your cs. Shove the lane out all the way before you gank. I've found that I can still hit my minimum benchmarks of 50cs/10 and 110+cs/20 even after ganking and get my aghs by 18 minutes. With wand, double null/null+aquila/null+basi, raindrops and some levels you're a relatively tanky early gamer with some serious right click that's crazy good in early skirmishes

  4. It's really not hard to have a gank go successfully. Buy yourself a smoke if you think they have wards, and skill cold snap and alacrity. In the first 10-15 minutes of the game, these two spells alone can take down any non-mid enemy player. Your damage and kill potential on weaker heroes is insane! Each right click probably takes off ~1/4 of their health. You don't have to land any of the skill shot spells like meteor or sunstrike to get kills and if you do, you have invoke off cd to do so. Make sure that your positioning is correct though (coming in from behind so they have nowhere to run etc.)

I've watched a few higher level (5k-6k mmr games) and it seems that play in this way (sans smoke because they are smarter than myself). If they see kill potential, or feel like a lane needs help, they'll shove their lane out, run up to a lane to gank then either farm out the jungle or tp back to their mid lane to resume farming.

I used to just afk farm mid and tell my teammates not to worry, that after aghs everything will be better, but I've found that ganking in the early-ish stages of the game really amplifies our ability to stay relevant in the game and make sure we don't fall behind if they draft strong laners. My invoker win rate has gone up a lot as a result.

This is my interpretation of how invoker should be played but if someone else has constructive criticism, I'd be happy to hear it.

Question about Centaur Warruner & Offlane.

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 09:52 AM PDT

This is my current hero pools:

Support : Witch Doctor, Lich, Warlock, Disruptor (Trying to learn)

Offlane : Tidehunter (Will stopped playing him because its hard for team to play with my ult), Centaur Warrunner (Trying to learn, Go-to-Offlane), Bristleback (Trying to learn)

Mid : Viper (Go-to-Mid)

Core : Bristleback (Trying to learn, Go-to-Core)

I usually last-picked and plays the role that are currently missing. I play hard support most of the time, sometimes Offlane Utility Core when playing solo queue with another 3 - 4 stacks. Seldomly, I plays as Mid or Safelane Core. Currently, I play tons of unranked games around 2k (by opendota).

  1. As Solo Offlaner, how does it counts to win or dominate a lane?
Here are 2 games of me playing as Solo Offlane Tidehunter https://www.opendota.com/matches/3280998144/laning & https://www.opendota.com/matches/3290485632/laning. In the first game, I was against a Solo Safelane Juggernaut, I have a better cs than him but the story states that I have a draw even lane. In the second game, I was against Dual Safelane Earthshaker and PA. While PA has higher cs than me, I managed to get 3 - 0 in the lane by 10 minute marks, and again the story states that I have a draw even lane.

  2. I have play few matches of Centaur Warrunner in insane bots game with Torte De Lini's build during the Dota 2 server downtime. In my first impression, I think the build is very heavy in Hp regeneration that nullified the damage I get from Double Edge. It also allowed me to spam Double Edge to farm. The problem is I have Mana Issues even with the + 2 Mana Regen Talent. Also, I have problem in deciding which Utility Items I get after getting Hood of Defiance, Blink & Blademail. I know that Crimson Guard is good against Right Clicker, Shiva's Guard is also good against Right Clicker and gives of the Int that Centaur might need, Pipe of Insight is good against Magic Damage Dealer. But against a balanced team, I dont know which item I should go for as every items looks very helpful in the situation.

  3. I split into another paragraph for formating reason, continuing my topics on Centaur item choice. In what situation do I go for Heaven's Halberd? The items itself improve effective hp of Centaur by giving him evasion, but the active only useful for single target. Also, can someone gives me a situation where I need to go for Aghanims Scepter & Heart of Tarrasque for Centaur? Lastly, is the Utility items that not showns in the Torte De Lini's build like Mechanims, Guardian Greaves & Lotus Orb worths to get it on Centaur?

  4. In losing games as Centaur, should I get Force Staff and play it like Sladar? Using every spells of mine before forcing myself back. I used to play it like this in losing games as Tidehunter, although I doesnt have much success.

Sorry for my bad English and bad grammar as I am not native English speaker. Also, I take any constructive advice even if its about my hero pools. Thanks in advance.

Need tips on Invoker's early to mid game

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 08:16 AM PDT

Lately, i've been playing invoker quite a lot. But sometimes i have an issue on the early game. When to go E-Q or E-W on the first two levels? and what are item choices on the early game to match the game's condition? ex: basi, double null, wand, raindrops, etc.

If someone can analyze one of my invoker games, that'd be great! https://www.dotabuff.com/players/161331619/matches?hero=invoker

Mid risk taking

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 12:41 AM PDT

I'm a 2k mid player, and I've been watching a lot of good pro mid players ( Dendi, Miracle, Midone, Abed, sumail) and I've noticed they often take risks that I don't. It got me thinking it playing more aggressive mid rewards better. If possible, can you give me feedback on situations you should be aggressive in, when to know that you can safely get a kill, and if you should be staying in lane with <30% hp.

Slacks' method of "following the best teammate like a lost puppy" - is it foolproof?

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 02:15 PM PDT

I know his tutorial videos aren't 100% serious, but one takeaway of his that makes absolute sense to me is find the one person who's not an idiot and follow them around like a lost puppy. Any time I forget to do this, I lose. But if I do it, it's pretty likely I'm going to win. Trying to support the ones who are bad so they can play better, just does NOT seem to work.

Is he right or am I getting lucky?

Was this game even winnable? (1.1k average game analysis)

Posted: 07 Jul 2017 11:20 AM PDT

So I just played Invoker mid at a 1.1-1.2k average game. From the start, I knew the game would be hard. Our witch doctor was toxic/salty for no good reason (he flamed our picks and said I would do a horrible job mid). I didn't want to mute him because everyone knew english so I thought communication would be key that game, especially because the other team had an OD (I love spamming OD, so I knew how to counter him). Our timber ended up abandoning, but during the pauses, Witch Doctor was just plain toxic and annoying. I asked him what his problem was, and he basically said losing all these ranked games to trash picks. i said, well why don't we win this... And ofc he flamed. So I ended up muting him. Anyways, push comes to shove, our whole team but Jakiro and me ended up abandoning. Is this game winnable? I lost 24 MMR to a team which was non-existant! I know you guys tell me not to dwell on games like these, but what could I have done better in these circumstances? I think I should have gone OC instead of sheepstick just so I could spam spells more.

Pugna mid: When to pick

Posted: 06 Jul 2017 09:09 PM PDT

I've had some overall "decent" success with pugna in these two games https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3289208428 and https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3297608673. Both games I had a high number of early kills (8-0 and 9-0), but the momentum quickly dropped. As soon as I get aghs, the enemy takes me more seriously (from not expecting a pugna to take all 3 t1s by 12 minutes, or underestimating my damage output).

Anyways, what matchups should I be scared of, and what matchups should I know I should pick him against (I already know skywrath, which was the reason I picked him in the 2nd game). What team comps should I look to combo pugna with? And lastly, itemization. I always go bottle-wand-arcanes-aether-aghs-bots, but after this I'm not too sure. I went atos both games after and it was nice to have a bit more health, but I don't know if there is a better option afterwards. Perhaps just going straight octarine (which seems op on him) would be better?

Tell me what went wrong and how I win this game?

Posted: 06 Jul 2017 09:40 PM PDT

BAD loss streak. Figure since I haven't played safelane carry but once the entire loss streak maybe that's the problem. Pick AM. Have KOTL (which I am starting to think is a crappy laning support except against SOME heroes) in lane with me. Weaver loses mid. I lose my lane, forced to jungle. Ganked in jungle a couple times. Get mega-tilted. Still going for my Battle Fury. Finally get it. Win a teamfight, enemy team wiped. Confidence rises. Support finally wards jungle to the point I can farm everything I need. Get manta. Little fight here and there. They feed Weaver hard a ton of times. Farm more BKB. Eventually lose game. Weaver actually buys back and instadies? I have no idea how either. Major throw there. How do I win this? What could I have done to stay in lane and get my normal 14-17 min (depending on how tough my lane is) BF? Did my support not harass and zone properly? Anything wrong with farming patterns? I treadswitched for my blink in Jungle so I felt good about that. I'm just tired of losing. I'm trying to not let it affect me but it's really bad. I know it can't just be my teammates but it can't be all me either. How can I improve off of this?

Game in Question

My Dotabuff

TL;DR: Im bad. How do I win this game? How can I improve? Farming patterns, decision making, winning my lane etc.?
