Official r/smashbros Monthly Voted Tier List (May 2017): Results! Posted: 11 Jun 2017 06:53 AM PDT I'd write something funny, but I don't think it's the right time... hahahahaha (please laugh I'm running out of ideas for these opening panels) A quick recap on the voting guidelines:S Tiers are best, most viable characters in the game. "The Meta," if you will. They are always able to place high at tournaments, and their strengths tend to outweigh their weaknesses considerably. A (A+/A/A-) Tiers are characters who don't define the meta, but are definitely viable and able to compete. They may possess a few noticeable flaws or lack very big strengths, but they are able to be worked around. Use of these characters will never hold the player back. B (B+/B/B-) Tiers are characters who are able to do very well in tournament, but are held back from consistently placing high. This can be because of several flaws, very large flaws, bad match-ups, or other reasons. However, they are definitely still threats. C (C+/C/C-) Tiers are characters who are really only good for situational or limited use. They have potential, but this potential is limited by their struggle against popular characters in the meta. They can be very useful in certain match-ups. D Tiers are characters who are not tournament viable in any sense. They are littered with too many weaknesses to even have occasional use as a pocket. A player would be severely limited by these characters. In terms of Miis, they are ranked with both their default and custom movesets. Default Miis are marked with a "1111," while freed custom moveset Miis are not marked. Both default and custom moveset Miis are average (guest) size and do not have any custom equipment. Here's this month's tier list! Here's the less #FreeMii version And, for those who like to compare, here's last month's tier list. Interesting things to note:
Well, it's time for this month's "Funsie" Question! This time, participants were asked about the importance of certain character attributes in relation to tournament viability. In other words, "what makes characters good?" Each question was answered on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 meaning the trait is vital to being a good character and 1 meaning the opposite.
Usually, I'd put /u/DiamondJoyride responding to your silly memes in right about here. However, due to a fairly rational request, I'll be linking those in a Google Doc, so you guys don't have to scroll as much through this wall of text. (Don't mind the titles of these Docs btw, most are inside jokes between Diamond and I) CLICK HERE to see your regularly scheduled meme programAnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd that's about it!Just one more thing: like I said last time PM me ANY IDEAS FOR MORE EFFICIENTLY RUNNING THE TIER LIST VOTING! I offered this last time, and while I got plenty of responses on the poll, i got no PMs. I did mention taking that off the poll and redirecting people to messaging me last time, but forgot to implement it. There's always next time :) And with that, I'm off! See you next month! Comparing "Smash Gods" to Chess Legends! Posted: 11 Jun 2017 03:32 PM PDT This is my first Reddit post. This post is inspired by an earlier post that compared melee characters to chess openings. It does not require chess knowledge to understand this post. I want to show that these melee story lines have happened before in chess, sometimes over a hundred years ago. I aim to expose the melee community to some additional chess terminology that I believe can really help players analyze their own melee games. Furthermore, today's melee commentators can especially benefit from chess analysis, as it provides avenues to analyze any game in an organized fashion. I do not claim to be the best at smash or chess, I am simply a fan of both sports. If you are an exceptional chess player or melee player I would love to hear input. If you are new to smash or chess, I hope this post inspires you to learn more about these beautiful games. Comparing the "smash gods" to chess legends is not a faulty comparison. The way a legend plays is deeply rooted in the game, everything seems to flow correctly. Reddit should not be shamed for idolizing only the upper echelon of players, these players deserve the praise! format: Melee player - Chess Legend - Identifying play style 1. Adam "Armada" Lindgren - GM Gary Kasparov - "Champions" The similarities between Kasparov and Armada's demeanor is haunting. They have a similar legacy, play style, and philosophy. In an interview with Kramnik (another chess legend), he says, "Kasparov's capacity for study is second to none, there is nothing in chess he has been unable to deal with." Kasparov reigned as world champion longer than any other chess player, defending his title for 19 years before retiring. Kasparov was known to start with aggressive openings, continuing with brilliant positioning. He would punish any gap in his opponent's play to the end. Both Armada and Kasparov cover their weaknesses extremely well. During matches Kasparov is your mortal enemy, you must engage him and play at his level for any hope. Away from the chessboard he is a good and logical man. Kasparov has done more to promote chess than any other world champion. Kasparov's immortal game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gOorE7JCQU 2. Juan "Hungrybox" Debiedma - GM Anatoly Karpov - "Positional" A positional player is versatile in their openings and can vastly switch up their style to what a position demands. They seek first to achieve a comfortable and familiar position, and then build a lead from it. Karpov is considered to have a "boa constrictor" style, he would move his pieces hypnotically, taking no risks, yet he would react mercilessly to any tiny errors made by his opponent. Positional players are countered by tactical players. The reason that a tactical mind prevails is that they can exploit the underlying rules or "physics" of a game to undermine theoretically safe positioning. It is easy to steer a positional game into a tactical game, but not the other way around. A good positional player will seldom lose to a lower level player, as they generally have the experience and intuition to hold an advantageous position to the end. A common misconception in melee is that good positioning is stage control. A "position" is the current snapshot of the chessboard, do they feel safe at the moment, is the opponent overextending, do I have advantage? Positioning is a vague concept for puff, Hungrybox has brilliantly found ways to mix up the way he moves to lull his opponents into familiar positions. A favorable position for Hungrybox is one which covers one or few of his opponents options safely, if they refuse to fall into those options, he will not commit. Maintaining the position is paramount. Karpov and Kasparov were intense rivals, and had conflicting political views. A hilarious lecture on Karpov's boring style: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enR0ntHVjG8 3. William "Leffen" Hjelte - GM Bobby Fischer - "Technical" Bobby Fischer is the most famous chess player from the U.S. and also the most notorious. He once refused to defend his world championship title because he did not like the lighting in the venue, he was opinionated, he often accused his Russian opponents of cheating. Regardless of who Bobby Fischer became later in his life, he must be respected for breathing new life into the game of chess with his brilliant technical play. There is often confusion surrounding the difference between positional and technical play. The difference is psychological, there are sometimes many correct ways to play a position, a technical player chooses the option that is correct for the most reasons. Being able to multishine does show attempt at a technical play style, but it does not make you a good technical player. Technical play stems from game intuition and foresight, a technical player knows how different options will play out down to minute details. It is almost impossible to be a technical player without being very strong, it requires too much chess understanding. The only true threat to a good technical player is themselves. They tend to play the same openings but know them extremely well, similar to how Leffen only plays fox. When playing a strong technical player it feels like they are calling you an idiot with every move they make, as if their moves should be obvious to everyone. Fischer's "Game of the Century" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M624T3PTggU 4. Joseph "Mang0" Marquez - GM Mikhail Tal - "Attacking" Tal, also known as the "Magician from Riga," was a creative genius and the greatest attacking player of all time. His attacks were characteristic of daring combinations, sacrifices, and unpredictability. In The Mammoth Book of the World's Greatest Chess Games, there are more games by Tal than any other player. Tal was also a special kind of player, normally such an attacking style depends heavily on calculation; however, Tal was an intuitive attacking player. Without much calculation, he had a natural understanding of how to conduct an attack. Intuitive players are a weird group, you get the sense that they know where their pieces belong. They are not the best pure calculators but they make up for it in moving quickly and confidently to find the correct solution. An intuitive player can sometimes trust their instincts too much when the position demands harder work. Attackers have the most difficulty against technical players, technical players are hard to gain an initiative on. Attacking players only perform well with an initiative. However, if an attacking player ever manages to mix it up against a technical player, they have a great chance of landing a knockout. These games are always extremely entertaining and have great chances for fireworks. Tal did not really care for his health, and he had little knowledge of anything outside of chess. He famously snuck out of the hospital when he was on his death bed to play one last chess game against Kasparov, Tal won, this is something I could see Mang0 doing against Armada (Kasparov). Bobby Fischer (Leffen), had little respect for Tal, calling his game play obsolete and more like "coffee house chess." Tal's Last game vs. Kasparov: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGkrwga21iY (This game is not as flashy as most Tal games, he ends up winning on time, but it is a cool piece of history.) 5. Kevin "PPMD" Nanney - Jose Raul Capablanca - "Logical" Bobby Fischer considered Capablanca to be the strongest player of all time, he praised him for his "light touch." Capablanca played before chess computer evaluation, yet if you look back at his world championship games, he played more computer suggested moves than anyone of his time. Capablanca excelled in simple positions and endgames. He was also capable of using aggressive tactical play to drive home a positional advantage, provided he considered it safe and the most efficient way to win. Logical players often do not try anything too unorthodox, but that doesn't mean they shy away from complications. They are good at adapting to unfamiliar positions and approaching them with a fresh mind. They are solid at all phases of the game, but not spectacular at any. Logical players maintain a psychological edge, they understand that chess is a game and do everything necessary to win. They often play rather quickly and put a lot of clock related pressure on you, and will understand and avoid your strengths. A nice lecture on Capablanca's famous endgames: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziCLlmz0ATo 6. Jason "Mew2king Zimmerman - GM Viswanathan Anand - "Tactical" "I Think in terms of play, Anand is no weaker than Kasparov, but he's simply a little lazy, relaxed, and only focuses on matches," -Kramnik. Anand was the previous world championship holder, before losing to Magnus Carlson in 2013. Anand truly came to power when he invested heavily in chess engines. Vishy Anand was the first to truly utilize chess computers to extensively memorize 50+ moves of opening theory. It is impossible for a human to attain the depth of a computer. But, if there is anything that a computer is good at, it's tactics. Computers are known for finding inhuman moves that lead to game winning tactical plays. For example, Mew2king is perfectly fine throwing out basic principles of neutral game and stage positioning to gain the use of ledge tactics or other game winning exploits. Magnus Carlson had to do whatever he could to bring Anand out of his opening theory in order to win the world championship, you could say that for the first 20 moves at least, Carlson was literally playing against a supercomputer. I suggest watching the movie "Magnus" it explains Magnus Carlson's journey to the top, Garry Kasparov is in it, it also goes into how Magnus had to prepare against Anand and his top of the line supercomputer. 7. Justin "Plup" McGrath - GM Hikaru Nakamura - "Dynamic" Hikaru Nakamura is the current #1 chess player in the U.S. (Although he does have an appalling record against Magnus Carlson.) He is widely known as the greatest blitz and bullet chess player in the world. Bullet chess is a variant where time is strictly limited, usually to 1 minute of thinking time for each player to checkmate their opponent. Dynamic players lean toward an aggressive/tactical side. They play enterprising openings and simply try to outplay you. They are constantly fighting while mixing things up. A dynamic player thrives in "double-edged" positions. A double-edged position is one where it is unclear who is better, such as a scramble where both players have a potential attack, but it is unclear who's attack will succeed first. The goal of a dynamic player is to present their opponent with as many problems and questions as they can, even if it causes problems of their own. They do not feel comfortable when a position becomes strategical or dry. Although Dynamic players generally have a technical nature, they differ in that a truly technical player is more practical in the opening, where a dynamic player plays openings that purposely get them into these double edged positions. Great lecture on Hikaru Nakamura: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oem1cw1hm_o Disclaimer: I stole much of this information off of various wikipedia pages on these players, and stole the chess play style format and descriptions from THIS website https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/chess-styles I mainly wanted to consolidate this information and relate it to smash. If you read all this, Thanks! I'll leave this cool video that shows the Dominance of Chess Champions over time, very interesting! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2DHpW79w0Y&t=142s [link] [comments] | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
