It's time to actually support the community--VGBC and UR patreons

Posted: 20 Jun 2017 06:05 AM PDT

We stalled out again! Come on Smash 4, get in there! Just 9 more dollars today!

Guys, lets get serious for a second.

We all love smash. We talk constantly about how we want the scene to grow, how we love to support it. We are so thrilled when organizations support Smash, and when people go out of their way to do things for the community.

We can raise thousands of dollars to get Melee to EVO. People show up out of nowhere to get their local heroes to 2GG events, or shell out massive dollars to get their favorite player into the Summit. We even rally for GoFundMes when a community member is in need. We know there's money out there in the scene, and we're thrilled to give that money to this community for stuff we think is cool. Far and away this is a community willing to raise funds when calledd for.

And yet, let's take a look at the Patreon pages for VG Boot Camp and Unrivaled Tournaments. These are easily the premiere streamers for Melee and Smash 4 respectively. Without them we don't have the top quality overlays, the vods for every major event, the incredible cinematography of Civil War--none of it. I don't think there's a single community member who would say that Smash is not better because these two organizations exist.

Still, the VGBC patreon is hovering around $100 a month, and the UR patreon has a grand total of 7 donors. Seven!

Smash community, we are so much better than this. More than compendiums or GoFundMes, this is an opportunity to actually make a direct impact on the health and growth of Smash. These high quality streamers are the only way we will continue to grow.

Our competing esports have incredible production value. They have thousands of dollars to spend on directors, producers, sound techs, lighting experts, and so much more. We have to compete. We need the incredible shots from Civil War at every single event. We need overlays that are consistent and high quality. We need everything that is in a streamer's ability to control to be executed at the highest level.

The fact is, we have that in these two organizations. Putting your money towards these Patreons will do more for the growth and health of Smash than anything else you can possibly do. Compendiums are nice, they are a great way to support your fellow smasher. However, they do nothing to increase viewership with people outside of the existing community. You are not going to convert a new smasher because the best Little Mac in New England gets to go to Arms Saga. The data proves that out.

However, great production value, fast turn-around on vods, connections with other esports and the broader FGC, same-day highlight reels---these things will expand the influence of Smash in the esports industry. Thanks to Unrivaled we now have friends in the Gears of War community. VGBC is at so many FGC events, GIMR can have influence there.

It astounds me that we can raise so much money for compendiums, but we can't each give a dollar a month to directly support our community in a real, lasting way. Every single one of us has directly benefited from the hard work of these two companies.

We are never going to have Nintendo's money. It's up to us to allow our ecosystem to grow and prosper. It's our responsibility to directly support the people who are doing good work in the community. By supporting things like these patreons, you also show potential sponsors how much money there is in the scene. You show them that you care about quality.

Now, let me make two concessions here before going forward. First, if you subscribe to either entity on Twitch, ignore everything I've just said. You are not expected to do both. It is my understanding that Patreon gives a bit more revenue to the org, but if you would rather have your Twitch emotes, that is completely reasonable. If you can do both, that's amazing, but do not feel an obligation from this post.

Second, neither company is really optimizing their Patreon. I've observed a number of successful Patreons in the creator and gamer space, and there are a few things missing from these two pages that would help encourage more support. If GIMR or Sage are reading this, I'd be happy to help you guys optimize your pages to encourage more traffic and support.

With that said, the time to take action is now. Every smasher can afford one dollar a month. You may think that a dollar doesn't mean much, it's not worth the effort of getting out your debit card. At the time of writing this, there are over 1,000 smashers browsing this subreddit. If even half of you gave a dollar a month, that's $500 a month going to one of the best streaming organizations in the business (minus Patreon fee). That's massive! That is life changing money for a streamer. It would let them set money aside to upgrade equipment, provide real payment to their staff, or bring on a new team member. It would give them some actual protection in the event of a health crisis, or a contracted job failing to pay out.

I know we're better than this. I've seen it with my own eyes. The links for both companies are below. Go be the community I've come to love and respect. Go do what I know you can do. Rally behind your fellow smashers and give whatever you can. Thank you.

TLDR: GO DONATE TO THE PATREONS FOR THE MOST PROLIFIC STREAMERS IN THE SCENE!

https://www.patreon.com/UnrivaledTournaments

https://www.patreon.com/vgbootcamp

Edit: Already a new donor to VGBC! Thank you guys, lets keep it rolling!

Edit 2: Woah! Someone just stepped up big for UR and we've added several new donors to VGBC! Thank you so much for your support! Let's keep this train rolling. Callout someone in the comments, challenge someone to match your donation! Don't stop, I know we can do this gang! Let's get UR up to $100 in the next hour and VGBC up over 40 donors!

Who Dominated their Scene More? ZeRo Vs. Ken

Posted: 20 Jun 2017 04:44 PM PDT

I was very young when Melee was gaining steam in the competitive community, and I only discovered that Smash 4 had a huge following in esports a few years ago. As anyone who has even thought about Smash 4 probably knows, ZeRo is widely considered the best Smash 4 player in the world. The man has been playing at the top level for years, and it remains to be seen how long he will rule before he passes his prime. Another Smash legend is Ken, the man who dominated Melee for years. Although both were popular almost a decade apart, they were THE guys for their game. My question is simple: Which of the two dominated and had more influence in their respective games? Why do you think that is? Are there better players in the one scene, or are they at comparable levels of skill?

  • Little Mac - 14.33 m/s
  • Captain Falcon - 14.81 m/s
  • Sonic - 20.09 m/s

For reference, this makes everyone from Roy onwards faster than Usain Bolt's top speed.

The way I was able to get actual real life units of speed from the game was actually pretty simple. First I slowed down a Home Run Contest video to find out how many tiles are placed between each 100 foot marker. This is a nice and tidy 4. From there I could measure the height of the Sandbag in comparison to one of the 25 foot long tiles. The Sandbag, well enough, comes out to be 6.82 feet tall. Or about 6'10'' if you want to measure it like that.

Afterwards, I measured how tall Ganondorf is in comparison to the Sandbag. He comes out to about 7.84 feet/7'10''. Then, using this video, I was able to compare all of their running speeds. But before that I needed to measure the length of the stage. By comparing about half of the stage length to Ganondorf I could determine that the full stage should be around 147.86 feet/147'10'' long. Then it was just a matter of watching the video and putting run times into Google.

Some Suggestions for The Reads with Scar & Toph

Posted: 20 Jun 2017 08:19 AM PDT

These are just some quick changes that I have been thinking about whenever I watch The Reads. They are all design/graphical changes not changes to the content or anything.

http://imgur.com/a/QFxfL

This album pretty much explains it but I can explain it here too.

#1 Identifying who is who and twitter tags

In this match you are unable to tell who is who simply based off of what is on screen. The only way to tell is when Scar and Toph try to figure it out after the match started. This really only applies to ditto matches but it is still important. Also the twitter tags are horrendously misaligned for some reason.

#2 Misaligned camera

In this image you can see that the cam of Alex comes in and is uncentered from the pink background on all sides of the square.

#3 Proposed changes

This is my (very bad) paint mock up of what I think should be done. You can see that I have changed Spenser's falco to blue (because he is blue falco) and added the ports beneath. I also would just scrap the single facecams coming in and out and add a static cam of all of them. At one point in the video it three boxes come on screen within 3 seconds of each other and I think the static cam would just work a lot better. If you want to keep the twitter tags you could add them below each person respectively or just always have them up when they are in cam only mode just like at the beginning of the video.

TLDR: I suggest some graphical changes to The Reads with Scar & Toph. Just some aligning suggestions and such.

I dont really think that the producers or Scar/Toph will see this but maybe posting it will have it be seen. Its not really that important but it just would make the show look a lot better (in my opinion).

So do you think ZSS is still a top 10 character?

Posted: 20 Jun 2017 06:04 PM PDT

There are still a large group saying she ia overatted or not even a top tier character.

However she still gets good results and ZeRo put her as high as #6 on his recent tier list . He made some good points talking about jetwas right about the "Zero Suit" factor still being strong after her nerfs. She may not be the most consistient character in neutral. But she can be explosive as hell with or with rage. As ZeRo learned at Civil War. you could think you are winning the set but a good ZSS cam get one good conversion at the right time and she will literally boot your ass into oblivion with a up-air to Boost Kick combo or a well-timed Flip Kick spike off a D-Smasj or even N-air

I dont agree with ZeRo that it absolves her bad MU's or flaws. But Nairo and Marss are still showing she is a force to be reckoned with

I wouls say she is maybe #9-8 myself..

SSF2 Beta Sandbag Guide!

Posted: 20 Jun 2017 01:47 PM PDT

As of a 3.0 update, the Nintendo Switch is now capable of using the Switch Pro Controller via wired communication.

Posted: 20 Jun 2017 02:02 AM PDT

Full notes for the update can be found here

While not entirely relevant right now, this is definitely big for the inevitable release of Smash Switch. Considering that all of Nintendo's main controllers passed the GameCube have been wireless I'm surprised that the option for a wired connection is being introduced to the Switch natively.

Artist and Vendor applications are now available for Shine 2017!

Posted: 20 Jun 2017 08:15 AM PDT

Hi Everyone! We're doing things a little differently for artist alley and vendors this year. Last year we didn't make any separation from vendors/artists and the pricing per table was a bit high. This year, we've classified them separately similar to how Anime conventions do it. Artists will have an 8 foot table at $125, where vendors will have to apply for a 10'x10' booth at $600. The forms are below!

What are some reasons you think Marth declined in the 2017 metagame?

Posted: 20 Jun 2017 08:26 AM PDT

He had a slow rise, with multiple bumps and a strong second half of 2016 that ultimately pushed him into top tier.

This year it isnt looking as strong. As for reasons? Lots of potential ones, but Id argue these three. Ill give some my reasoning in the comments/responses as to not overload the OP

A) Cloud

B) Mr. Es decline

C. Rise in Lucina usage accelerating the Marthcina anti-meta

What do you think?
