HGC Mid-Season Brawl

HGC Mid-Season Brawl is the first Heroes tournament in 2017 featuring teams from the entire world. 12 teams play to determine the world champions: two best teams from each major region (South Korea, Europe, North America, China) and the champions of minor region championships (Taiwan, Australia & New Zealand, Southeast Asia, Latin America). Tournament winners get 100,000 USD out of the total prize pool of 250,00 USD.

On June 10-14, a group stage was played with two groups of six teams. Two bottom teams from both groups were eliminated and the tournament moved on to the playoffs - a double elimination bracket. Here, top two teams from each group start in the upper bracket semi-finals while 3rd and 4th placed teams have to fight through the lower bracket. All matches are best-of-5, except for the best-of-7 Grand Final where the upper bracket winner starts with a one game lead. The playoffs are played from June 17 to June 19 during DreamHack Summer in Jönköping, Sweden.

Game version

HGC Mid-Season Brawl is played on the May 31 balance patch. D.Va is allowed.

Blizzard, we REALLY need an IN GAME encyclopedia of game mechanics and technical aspects for newer players to see.

Posted: 17 Jun 2017 05:20 PM PDT

I've noticed this a lot more recently with the 2.0 update bringing in so many new players. And even alpha vets like myself don't know some technical stuff until it's pointed out.

There needs to be a place to read up on these things in game, it doesn't even have to be fancy, just text descriptions and pictures.

Stuff like this:

What is armor? Who has armor? What is the difference between it and spell armor?

What counts as "spell" damage?

What are the different types of minions?

Which minions drop health globes? How much do they heal me for? What about the healing fountain?

Why is the core invulnerable?

When do catapults spawn? How does their targeting work?

What do catapult minions do on hanamura differently than other maps?

How does unit collision work? What does the circle underneath my hero represent?

Stuff like these questions desperately need to be answered IN GAME. New players should not have to look hard to find stuff that becomes very very important at higher levels of play.

Please fellow Redditors, upvote for visibility, I'd really like a blizzard response on this one.

Posted: 17 Jun 2017 04:14 PM PDT

Holy shit, having double digit levels in diamond games is fucking insanity. Seeding shouldnt even happen from any of the normal Qs, all the seeding does is break the matchmaking. Id gladly take hard reset if it meant i could have my games properly matchmade, instead of this stupid shit

D.Va needs a MVP algorithm penalty like Murky and Cho'gall

Posted: 17 Jun 2017 06:16 AM PDT

I was waiting for someone to post the latest MVP algorithm and confirm my suspicion. As much as I enjoy playing D.Va (I suspect she's my new main...) it's funny how extremely more likely than average she is to get the MVP.

If played correctly it is unlikely D.Va will spend any time dead. So it is incredibly likely D.Va will have the least penalty for time spent dead in the whole game. After that she only needs to be somewhat good in the other stats like damage taken or XP and she has a really good chance to be MVP.

Even Murky, who dies a bit every time, gets a penalty boost for time spent dead. I think D.Va probably needs something like this.

NEXUS: Heroes of the Storm Monthly Magazine

Posted: 16 Jun 2017 11:17 PM PDT

Hello everyone,

Over the last few weeks I've been been working on a free Heroes of the Storm magazine. It's something I've wanted to do with TTH for some time and hope it brings some entertainment to you all.

If possible, I'd love it if you would all take part in the vote on page 15 (that would really help my next issue).

You can view the magazine here

You can view some screenshots of the magazine here

I'd also like to send a big thank you to Lune, for taking part in my first issue.

If anyone spots any errors, or has feedback, please do let me know; I can easily fix and update the magazine without a link change.

Thank you for taking the time to read it.

[Edit] Several amendments made thanks to feedback from Soop, Neutraali, GoldenArcher and Cantor. Feel free to refresh the link for the latest copy.

Immortal/PvE Sustain DPS Chart Spreadsheet

Posted: 17 Jun 2017 06:11 PM PDT

Image Album (faster visualization): http://imgur.com/a/N1S0f

Spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1eg3LKXsGMlZJA3EbYtpRyipGhVJHEZpjzQPc02K9RHI/edit?usp=sharing

Hey guys!

A few days ago ago I posted a quick ranking chart I had done listing some heroes (and theirs builds) comparing their sustain damage against Battlefield of Eternity's Immortals (or any PvE boss/minion in general).

To my surprise, a lot of people commented with some really cool suggestions and I decided to put some more effort creating a dynamic spreadsheet. If you want, you can download it and play with the numbers, creating your own builds to compare. I also added a lot more builds to the comparison and refined most of the details from my previous chart so this one should be more accurate as well. You can also view individual heroes tabs to see how much each talent tier is contributing to your overall damage output.

Once you download the spreadsheet, you can change values such as Zarya's %Energy, Zul'jin's %HP and quest talent stacks in general to quickly view how they affect their DPS output.

Once again, all base damage numbers are normalized into Level 20 stats. This way we can remove the level scaling variance to view how builds, talents and quests only improve a hero damage output, but it is not a perfect system: some heroes like Li Ming, Zagara and Lunara have abilities that scale differently, so they may be stronger/weaker in the early game.

Let me know what you guys think and if you'd like to see any type of chart like this being produced. Cheers!

TL;DR:

TOP 10 - LEVELS 1~6:

Greymane (Worgen), Zul'jin (<50% HP), Rehgar, Samuro, Valla, Cassia, Zarya (>50% Energy), Gazlowe, Artanis, Malthael

TOP 10 - LEVELS 7~13:

Sylvanas, Valla, Zul'jin, Samuro, Greymane (Worgen), Varian (Twin Blades), Probius, Sonya, TLV, Falstad

TOP 10 - LEVELS 16~19:

Sylvanas, Valla, Greymane (Worgen), Zul'jin, Li Ming, Nazeebo, Samuro, Malthael, Varian (Twin Blades), D.Va (Pilot)

TOP 10 - LEVELS 20+:

Valla, Butcher, Sylvanas, Gazlowe, Greymane (Worgen), Sonya, Zul'jin, Li Ming, Nazeebo, Samuro

unfairly silenced 20+ times

Posted: 17 Jun 2017 05:13 PM PDT

Please read before posting.

To those thinking: "another toxic player complaining about his silences"

here my evidence of being unjustifiably silenced 20+ times.

http://i.imgur.com/0Pxk4NK.png http://i.imgur.com/GXjNZz7.png

From the screenshots i linked, as you can see i have been a victim of unjustified silences. This is a common occurance for me. No, i do not afk or grief games, the silences come simply from being an active player.

In general, it is usually the toxic players which report me, and get me silenced. funny enough the system which is designed to punish toxic players, is not actually punishing them, infact it is primarily punishing active players.

If you casually play heroes of the storm, you can flame as much as you like. as you will never hit the report threshold to be silenced.

Appeals come down to the opinion of the game masters, they only review mutes once you have appealed them, and each GM has a different opinion, for example, i have had appeals denied by certain GMs, and then the exact same offense was removed by another GM after i re-appealed the mute despite the first GM telling me they would not enter further discussion on the matter of the mute.

People in reddit are quick to judge silenced players, because as a collective they are mostly the casual player, (1-2 hours a day). These players will not get muted because they do not play enough games in the alloted time period, from my experience reports decay after 2 weeks from the time the report was given, and if you accumulate around 25-50 reports in those 2 weeks. you will be silenced. So if you don't hit that target you will not be muted, and this is also why you hear stories of people who flame alot in-games, but are never muted.

Blizzard can easily fix this issue, by copying steams style of handling reports, by issuing a certain amount of reports to each player a week, and when the report contributes towards a silence of a player, they are awared with 2 extra reports. This eliminates people reporting others, for trivial things (playing badly, picking a hero they do not like, making a team call, or just simply losing a game).

As a result of these excessive silences, i am scared to even type in-game as blizzard will try their best to find any reason whatsoever to keep the account silenced, if you said 1 abusive thing to another player, combined with 20+ fake reports. the silence will be justified.

generally, i am just sick and tired of being silenced for not typing anything, while i am in-turn flamed, abused, reported, and banned from hero league. It's like a criminal arresting an innocent person. and the police are perfectly fine with it.

Open letter to supports, tanks and specialists

Posted: 17 Jun 2017 07:38 AM PDT

You do your best as a support, tank or specialist, but then...

EHM VEE PEE

Li Ming/Valla/Malthael appears on screen

You know this scenario, I know this scenario and every non-assassin knows it. Sometimes you play so good and don't even end up on the vote screen

This is not a complaint about the MVP system. This is a letter of encouragement to those players that dare to play other roles.

That amazing CC that turned the teamfight in our favour? I've seen it. That sweet clutch heal or shield that saved your teammate's life? Loved that. The amazing pushing and lane domination you've demonstrated? We all noticed.

Just because the MVP system doesn't count those things doesn't mean that we are unaware of your efforts. Just skip past that MVP screen that shows people that go for kills instead of objectives or teamplay.

The system does not take into account any good CC, shielding (Hell, if you save a teammate from death the system credits them for escaping death, even when they would've died without your intervention).

But the players are different. I notice all those amazing things you do. And if you, the reader, notice those things as well, please do take a few seconds to write the player that performed them a PM of congratulations, especially if they don't make it to the MVP screen. It does matter to them. And newer players might be more discouraged by not appearing on that screen (a problem similar to the hero ranks, and how they may believe an epic hero is automatically inferior to a legendary hero).

This is all I had to say. I hope that my letter will make at least one person's day better.

Have a great day, everyone!

Black heart's Brawl working as intended...

Posted: 17 Jun 2017 01:32 PM PDT

Blizzard, We need more ways to support this game!

Posted: 17 Jun 2017 12:55 PM PDT

Loot boxes are not enough. I bought a few at 2.0 launch but not even close to the amount I used to spend on skins that I really liked!

I feel like hots is making 0 money of this new system unless there are people actually buying loot boxes...

PS. I'm a veteran player so I got a TON of shit at 2.0 which is why I don't need to buy anything ever again for this game. Until they release something worth buying.

EDIT: I'm guessing they're gonna have similar overwatch Seasonal boxes for us to buy (which I'm not really a fan of, but I love this game so...)

This is my life now (Kaeyoh ft. L5Noblesse)

Documentation on things that are obscure, hard to figure out or are hidden from players should be given from Blizzard.

Posted: 17 Jun 2017 10:12 AM PDT

I'd love for us to get confirmation on tons of things that wouldn't matter for 90% of players, but should still be knowable: as well as how interactions should work.

Examples such as:

Armor works by adding the values together.

Attack Speed buffs work from the base value, always.

Globes heal 12% health, 8% mana (Could be wrong!)

Fountains heal 40% health, 30% mana (Could be wrong!)

+10% damage and +10% damage results in a total of 20% damage (additively) instead of (10% * 10%) = 21% damage. (Matters for things such as Alarak's sadism + E buff.)

Etcetera. Can we have official documentation on all these obscure values? How much damage does a melee minion do? How much health do Braxis bosses have? How are speed buffs supposed to work? How fast does a core scale with damage/health? How big is the shield? How do immortals scale?

For an obscure example, Grave Golems on Mines don't scale linearly per skull, but then how do they scale? I'm not sure at all, but if for example after 70 globes each skull becomes less useful, it'd inform me if the tactic of "get 70 globes, push while they get the rest" is good.

These values should be obtainable out of game from official Blizzard documentation :)

Current MVP Algorithm

Posted: 17 Jun 2017 03:28 AM PDT

I've data-mined the MVP algorithm again. There were some updates compared to the algorithm I mined last November.

The algorithm:

1. Calculate MVP Score for each player:

* add kills * add assists x [LostVikings=0.75, Abathur=0.75, other=1] * add (timeSpentDead / gameLength) x 100 x [Murky=-1, Gall=-1, Cho=-0.85, other=-0.5] * add 1 if player has top hero damage of his team * add 1 if player has top hero damage of the match (ignored, if both teams have the same top hero damage amount) * add 1 if player has top siege damage of his team * add 1 if player has top siege damage of the match (ignored, if both teams have the same top siege damage amount) * add 1 if player has top healing of the match * add 1 if player has top XP contribution of his team * add 1 if player has top XP contribution of the match * add 0.5 if player is Warrior and has top damage received of his team * add 1 if player is Warrior and has top damage received of the match * add 2 if player won the match * add 2 x (siegeDamage / topSiegeDamageOfMatch) (ignored, if both teams have the same top siege damage amount) * add 2 x (heroDamage / topHeroDamageOfMatch) (ignored, if both teams have the same top hero damage amount) * add 2 x (xpContribution / topXpContributionOfMatch) * add (healAmount / topHealAmountOfMatch) if player is Support * add (damageTakenAmount / topDamageTakenAmountOfMatch) if player is Warrior

2. Pick player with highest MVP Score.

* If multiple players share highest score, pick the one with higher XP contribution (or random, if equal XP contribution).

(If random has to be used for 3+ players, random is biased by the player slot giving higher players better chances as the victor of the first comparison needs to defeat the third one, too. Chances for three players would be: 25%, 25%, 50%.)

Recent changes to this algorithm:

- added MVPscore for siegeDamage, heroDamage, xpContribution, healAmount and damageTakenAmount

I guess that this change was made in Heroes 2.0. However, I did not check the algorithm since November 2016.

I assume that the ignoring of equal top hero/siege damage is a bug. It is caused by a ">" instead of a ">=" in the comparisons.

HGC Mid-Season Brawl - winners' semifinals :: MVP Black (KR #2) vs Team Dignitas (EU #2) :: Discussion Thread

Posted: 17 Jun 2017 07:45 AM PDT

Previous match thread: HGC Mid-Season Brawl - winners' semifinals :: eStar Gaming (CN #2) vs Fnatic (EU #1) :: Discussion Thread.

The Eastern Clash champions versus the Western Clash champions - what a way to close out the first night at the Mid-Season Brawl! MVP Black was tight-lipped during our brief time together. They spoke of their respect for eStar and brought to light that Jae Won 'Rich' Lee, who will be replacing Tae Jun 'merryday' Yi after the Mid-Season Brawl, has yet to move into their team house.

Team Dignitas, however, had plenty to say concerning their first-round opponent. "I think Korea has the weaker meta currently," said Warrior player Jerome 'JayPL' Trinh. "We, on the other hand, have already adapted to the meta since the beginning of the tournament. We don't have substantial preparation however; we will just play what we want."

After defeating L5 3-0 this week, these words come off as particularly humble. All speculation aside, Team Dignitas and MVP Black are preparing for one of the biggest HGC matches to date. And this is just day 1!

When?

The match is planned to start at 16:50 CET / 7:50 PT, 5 minutes after this post was posted.

The playoffs are played from June 17 to June 19 during DreamHack Summer in Jönköping, Sweden.

Match format

This match is a best-of-5 series.

Battleground bans

  • Team Dignitas: Warhead Junction
  • MVP Black: Braxis Holdout
