Weekly Challenge Thread (May 1st) - Vase & Vista

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 11:03 PM PDT

Welcome to the Breath of the Wild Weekly Challenge thread :)

Introduction to Weekly Challenges

I would like to introduce something new to this sub; not only to get more out of this game we all love so much and find ways to make its systems and world feel 'new' but also to get the community's creativity involved. So I (with the Mods) decided to give this weekly challenge a try.

It works like so:

  • A Challenge is issued every Monday.

  • Everyone who completes the challenge posts the results/proof in this thread as a comment.

  • We all upvote whoever we think did it best.

  • Person who wins gets to issue the Challenge for the next week (must provide screenshot/proof that they completed their own challenge first and it is indeed doable).

  • Keep passing the torch!

*You're welcome to vote on results with your upvotes, even if you don't want to try the challenge.

*If you win and don't have a challenge ready for the following week, please let the mods know as soon as possible.

*This is not a thread to brainstorm, share or issue new challenges so please keep your comments on topic for the current challenge (results, questions, help for others, etc.). If you have a Challenge in mind, please submit it privately to the Mods or OP; they can hang on to it in case a new challenge isn't up and ready.

Challenge! (May 1st 2017)

This week's Challenge is called Vase & Vista

It's simple enough: RECREATE THIS PICTURE

Lighting, angle, framing, positioning all count so get as close as you can!

If that's all you need, away you go and good luck! :)

Hints + Tips

This section may give away some parts you'd rather puzzle and discover for yourself so stay away if you'd rather do the challenge fully. If not well, here's some tips :)

ThEre are three parts to this Challenge:

Find the vantage point for the picture.

- Note the sky, note the shAdows.

- The framing of this screenShot is deliberate; there's clues all over it. Corner to corner.

Find the vase.

- There's a clue hidden in this post; follow the irregulariTies :)

Get the vase to the vantage point for the final photo.

- This the toughest part of the challenge. It can be frustrating for reasons that Will soon become apparent to you...but stick with it! Every failure is an opportunity to explore, experiment, improve and succeed

- The most obvious route is the most perilous; that said, it's also the most predIctable. Use that to your advantage - ambush your ambushers.

- Put the vase down before you fiddle with equipment.

- The meals you eat beforehand, the clothes you wear, the time of day...you can use all of these factors to make it much easier for yourself; if you strategize right.

- During combat, don't stray too far from the vase but don't stay too Near it either. Learn how to spot flat ground to set it down quickly or rocks to prevent it from rolling away

- The Yiga can are going to be a problem but their aim is nowhere near as disastrous as that of Octoroks. If you don't want to be ambushed by one, then you'll want to know where they are…and if you want to locate something in BotW, well…you've got a tool for that...

- Use the towns or camps on your path both as a chance to take a breather as well as opportunities to pass the time of day/bad weather to your liking. Remember not to use campfires, warping or inns. Just good old fashioned waiting.

- Goats are not your frienDs; don't let your guard down near them. Trust me!

Good luck! :)

A Link Between Worlds is fantastic!

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 04:31 PM PDT

I'm only 2 dungeons away from beating it and I'm so surprised how great it is. I went into it expecting a good game. But not a great one. But this game is fantastic. It made real improvements to the formula. The renting idea is awesome. And that goes hand in hand with the way you can do most of the dungeons in any order. The game also has a great feeling of progression despite the rent system. I love that you can upgrade the Master Sword and every item in the game through exploration with collectibles. One brilliant aspect is the chests in the dungeons. I thought they would be lacking since the main items are accessible from the get go. But every dungeon has had items within it that add to your abilities in great ways yet also being completely optional. The wall merging mechanic is well executed and not contrived at all. And I love that accessing the different parts of Lorule is done by thorough exploration of Hyrule. Just really happy with the game. I really was missing out when I skipped on it.

[BOTW] Creating (relatively) easy panoramas with the phrenic bow and the Switch screenshot function

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 12:22 PM PDT

The Goal: Take panoramic landscape shots in Breath of the Wild

The final outcomes:

Tarry Town

Hyrule Field

Hateno Village

Hebra

How to:

  1. Change your HUD mode to "Pro" in the settings menu.

  2. Acquire a phrenic bow

  3. Find the landscape that you want to create a panorama of

  4. Take a bunch of overlapping screenshots while aiming with the bow... e.g., http://imgur.com/a/tSbBN... and save them to the SD card.

  5. Get Microsoft's Image Composite Editor on your PC

  6. In ICE, select "create a new panorama from images", load the screenshots you took in [4] from your SD card, and it will composite them into a panoramic image.

However... the image that comes out of this process will still have crosshairs from the bow and hearts splashed across the image. Unfortunately, you'll have to edit those out of the image.

I recently got the switch and are really enjoying breath of the wild. I just got to the Zora's and they are the first location I have gone to. I am wondering if there is anything that i may miss but will still be able to complete later. In other words is there anything I have to look out for because of a one time chance to get it. Amazing rendition of the Main Theme

[Spoilers] My very simple theory on why BOTW SideQuest rewards suck.

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 10:07 AM PDT

As we all know, side quests in BOTW are sort of "forgettable", plus they have horrible rewards. No matter what you do, the rewards are simple items, rupees.... or. That's it, just those.

Here's my very simple theory on why:

The world is a real world. If you do something for someone in real life, what will they give you? Their cars? A Switch? A special amiibo? No.

People who you do favors for in the real world may invite you to a thank you dinner or give you money for your troubles.

The designers didn't want the people to know about Shrines, hearts, inventories that are infinite, nothing. They wanted people to be just people.

I'm not sure this approach is the best one (or if this is true), but this is just a theory. A game theory.

Playing Twilight Princess on Gamecube / Breath of the Wild on WiiU

Posted: 01 May 2017 09:50 AM PDT

So, both of these titles came out for two generations of Nintendo consoles. TP was for both Gamecube and Wii, and BOTW is for WiiU and Switch.

Does playing these games on the older console take away from the experience at all? Are they better to play on the new consoles, or is there no difference?

[BotW] Hard Mode wish list

Posted: 01 May 2017 08:25 AM PDT

  • Shrine and Divine Beast puzzles are redesigned and are much harder (à la Ocarina of Time's Master Quest)
  • Blight Ganons and Calamity Ganon are more resistant to arrows
  • Hearty foods/ingredients are much harder to find
  • Food and Meals recover less hearts
  • Cannot heal during combat OR can heal during combat, but it takes a few real-time seconds (à la Dark Souls)
  • Enemies are a bit smarter
  • Some attacks cannot be parried
  • Hunger meter maybe? Have to eat every once in a while or you'll start losing hearts. Maybe a sleep meter as well, but that might break up the exploration too much

Anyway, that's all I can think of, Do you have any ideas for hard mode?

GUIDE: Fastest Wood Farming - 100 Wood in 10 minutes - Be a lumberjack!

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 06:20 PM PDT

GUIDE: Fastest Wood Farming - 100 WOOD IN UNDER 10 MINUTES

NEED WOOD BUT ARE FRESH OUT OF VIAGRA? WE'VE GOT YOUR BEST WOOD FARMING GUIDE RIGHT HERE

VIDEO GUIDE: Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 100 WOOD IN UNDER 10 MINUTES

Wood is incredibly useful is Breath of the Wild. Campfires for time traveling, roasting fruits and meat, melting ice blocks, staying warm and building up Terry Town.

This farming method will net you about 100 pieces of wood in less than 10 minutes without causing ANY wear-and-tear on your weapons. PLUS, as a bonus, you get a sh-- ton of apples.

THIS METHOD YIELDS 100 WOOD IN 10 MINUTES

Prep / Requirements:

You'll need the remote bomb upgrade. That's it! An ax can be useful which is why this farming technique takes you right to an ax if you do decide to add it to your wood-chopping arsenal.

There are 2 optimal locations for this to work:

  1. RITO STABLE: GIF Located east of the Rito Village. Fast travel to Akh Va'quot Shine, turn right, and paraglide to the Rito Stable.
  2. SATORI MOUTAIN: GIF Fast travel to Mogg Latan Shrine, turn right, climb up the hill, and paraglide to the apple trees.

Wood Farming Method:

By alternating between remote bombs you eliminate any downtime between explosions, you have the potential of knocking down more than one tree at a time, you don't lose any durability on your weapons, and you aren't waiting on stamina to replenish. After much testing I found that there is no objectionable difference in the amount of wood produced using an ax vs using a bomb.

In choosing the best location we're looking for the right combination of tree density vs enemy spawn. We want a high amount of trees with a low amount of enemies. This is what determined the two locations. There are other locations that meet these requirements but they didn't have extra wood lying around or produce a stupid amount of apples.

To mitigate any potential enemy spawns sit by a fire until morning before you start farming. This keeps all of the nightly creepy-crawlies in the dirt during your tree-bombing escapade.

FARMING STEPS:

Rito Stable

  1. Fast travel to the Akh Va'quot Shrine inside the Rito village GIF
  2. Head eat to the Rito Stable
  3. Sit by the fire until morning
  4. Destroy all of the wood piles that are lying around
  5. Start behind the stable with the cliff to your left and follow this path GIF
  6. THROW the bomb; DETONATE it; SWITCH to your other bomb TDS GIF
  7. Try and knockdown as many trees as you can with every throw (do not worry about turning the down tress into wood just yet)
  8. TDS all the way to the last tree
  9. Turn around and marvel at all of the fallen trees
  10. TDS back to the stable, turning the fallen trees into WOOD, and picking up the wood
  11. If there are a few fallen trees that are too close to bomb, feel free to hit them with an ax
  12. Use this same TDS method to take out the trees on the other side of the path
  13. In five minutes you should net between 55 - 70 pieces of wood

Satori Mountain

  1. Fast travel to the Mogg Latan Shrine in Satori Mountain GIF
  2. Go east and slightly north of the shrine to get to the farming location
  3. Once you find a large cluster of apple trees, use TDS method to clear out the trees
  4. Pick up wood and apples
  5. In three minutes you should net between 30 - 40 pieces of wood

Because of the randomness of wood made from trees your results will vary slightly but should be well within the ranges listed above. Trees respawn after blood moons so feel free to come back to these locations as part of your post-blood moon farming.

Outro:

I hope this helps you all out! May your wood pile grow high and your splinters be nonexistent.

(BOTW) When to complete all lost memories

Posted: 01 May 2017 09:40 AM PDT

So without spoilers, does it enrich the gaming experience in completing these memories sooner or later? I know it's optional but It greatly fills in the blanks from what I know.

I've opened up all towers and completed the Rito divine beast quest and have plundered Hyrule castle for heaps of booty a few times. Just looking for some background info on the quest line as I'm a sucker for a good story.

Zelda: Link to the Past trouble?

Posted: 01 May 2017 08:53 AM PDT

So I've been playing LTTP on the SNES lately and I received the Pegasus Boots last night. But when I tried to play it today, I can't seem to use my dash attack. I also noticed I can't charge my sword either which I was able to do both previously. I tried looking it up and found someone post about the issue on neoseeker. Only a few people on there had run into this problem but there was no answer on how to fix it.

"The boots start to activate, but just stutter no matter how long I hold down the A button. If I try to walk, I move at something like 2/3 normal speed. It's almost like the A button is repeating like a keyboard key instead of just staying on the whole time."

Seeing as this person was playing an emulator while I'm playing it on console must mean its in the original data, so I'm assuming there must be an in game solution I haven't come across yet.

I was at full health when I kept trying last night. I'm trying to build back my stamina bar to see if that's the issue(but I do have a small amount still) so I'm not sure if that's whats wrong either.

Anyone else know how to fix this? (Also, if anyone knows a good way to restore stamina, that would help also.)

I can't progress further without them. ;_;

Finally Completed BoTW. My Thoughts.

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 06:08 PM PDT

I haven't 100% the game but I have completed 81/120 Shrines, 4 Divine Beasts, collected all memories, and killed Ganon. I clocked in 85 hours with all my time being on the Switch version. So these are my thoughts of the game.

Exploration

As good as Zelda has been and the combat system has held up well over the years, it was time for a change. And not the change with the motion controls brought in SS. I'm happy to see the breathing of new life into the series. So many games these days may look beautiful but it is disappointing when I see something in the distance and venture there, only to find out I couldn't get there. There are too many invisible walls in other games. Being able to see something and almost always being able to get there was a fresh breath not only for Zelda, but gaming in general. Exploration truly made this game for me and is what continues to draw me back. I've seen people complain about constant rain, but I've never really had the issue. The only area I've really ever found constant rain to be an issue is Faron, but there are multiple ways to get around in this area with the waterfalls. The world is gorgeous and quite diverse in climates. Overall it is one of my favorite worlds, second only to the original Xenoblade. The world can feel a bit empty at times, but I knew this was basically an apocalyptic world. You can see ruins all over the place still of where civilization existed before the Calamity.

Durability and Crafting

I enjoyed the durability system. Not because I found it added any challenge, but because it added a tactical aspect to the game. It is important to decide if getting into certain battles are worth it and what armor and weapons to use in the battle. It further has you engage and explore the world looking to see what from the environment you can also use. With that being said, I also have some issues with the durability system. I wish the durability system either came with a health bar for the item or a numerical value like x/80. Items really only had three phases, new shown with a sparkle, used where the item starts to accumulate scratches and nicks, and when the game tells you it's about to break. Another feature that would have been welcomed is the ability to repair my own weapons. Too many times I find myself if I get a nice weapon it hangs in my house instead of being used. I find it almost a waste but with the RNG of some of these bonuses on weapons I might never find another like it again. Just like how the Champions weapons can be remade, they should have allowed a system where items could be repaired using precious ore. All of those weapons require a diamond, they could have divided aquired weapons into different tiers. With the highest tier weapons requiring a diamond or 3 to repair. Also, I have read how people hang their weapons and after a reload they lose the bonus, this has been fixed and I've never had an issue with it. Since Nintendo really never says anything in their patch notes, I'm not sure exactly how well known this is.

Story

I think this is easily the biggest hole in the entire game. Zelda games aren't typically known for their stories and some might even call them generic, beat the bad guy and save the princess. I felt really let down here though. I know they wanted to try something different with telling the story through memories, but I felt the execution was entirely lacking. For the most part the memories were short and ended at points where I felt there should have been more. Also, I found quite a few were just too simular to each other. It would have been enjoyable too learn more about the other champions, but besides the short scenes feature them before their divine beast and the one or two memories, I felt I got more story from the NPCs. I believe the execution for the original scene with the King and Impa were well done, but it was downhill from there. As many complaints as I have about SS I feel the story telling was done well there and was hoping it would continue in BoTW.

Dungeons and Shrines

Another popular topic, seems you either love it or hate it. I enjoyed what the game did with shrines and understood their purpose. With a world this large you need fast travel and the shrines play perfectly into the lore. Most puzzles are short and easy to complete, but it's a nice alternative to longer dungeons and something you can pick up and play if you have a few minutes. But, of course there is a but, what they did with dungeons upsets me. To me personally, Zelda has always been first and foremost about its dungeons. Each dungeon in every Zelda game I have ever played always had their own unique feel. While it seems like element is a popular theme to base a dungeon around that hasn't always been the case, but each dungeon always was different. In BoTW I didn't find that to be the case. Even though each divine beast was in completely different climates, this never really played a factor in the dungeon. While you were in the divine beast the only setting was malice and it was completely cut off from the outside world. You may venture outside of the beast ocasionlly and have to slap on some gear for the weather, but it was only ever a small part. For the most part the dungeons were plain and uninspiring unfortunately when the series is built on such great design. The bosses also felt kind of like a button mash and I usually found the entrance sequences more interesting than the dungeons and bosses themselves. Honestly, I really loved those parts. Another point I made earlier was shrines were a nice change to longer dungeons, but I didn't find the dungeons nearly as large or complex as in past iterations. Most dungeons only took 30 minutes to maybe an hour. I spent longer in some shrines. The dungeon itself being a puzzle was an interesting mechanic and something I enjoy. I remember my favorite dungeon from SS being like a giant puzzle also, I believe it was one of the last few. I hope they can explore this mechanic in future games while bringing back the dungeons I love. If the sacrifice to the dungeons was because of the shrines I would've happily accepted half the number of shrines to flesh out the actual dungeons more. Four dungeons can still be a complete game, look at MM. Last point is I was disappointed you couldn't reenter dungeon's as that's always been a series staple. I was hoping the Blood Moon would respawn the boss and inhabitants would I knew the mechanic it would perform.

Parting Words

All in all its a game I enjoy and see myself spending much more time in the world of Hyrule as I complete my final shrines and wait for the DLC. I didn't talk about graphics because they don't make a game to me. I like the art style and I did notice some frame rate drops at points. I would've preferred a resolution drop to frame rates, but it's minor.
