What I learned from a Survival Playthrough

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 08:13 AM PST

So, recently I decided to change up my playstyle a bit- Normally I'm more of a run-and gun type of player who tries to get the bare minimum gear required rush the military bases and get end-tier loot, but in my most recent run I wanted to try a different build- the Survivalist.

Instead of being set up for PVP, I set myself up for long-term survival. That meant carrying farming equipment, a butane stove and a pot for cooking/drinking, and using a bow and arrow instead of an actual gun to avoid attention. Here's what I learned.

--Always carry an improvised knife. I'm officially recommending this for any kind of lone-wolf playthrough. The improvised knife takes one slot and can preform knife functions that I only realized the true value of when playing long-term. Halfway through the my play, I fell prey to the third most deadly hazard the game has to offer: The three-level-barn stairwell. I fell off of the perilous staircase between the first and second floor and broke a leg automatically. It nearly ended my playthrough, but I had my trusty knife with me. I crawled outside, cut sticks from a bush, and crafted a splint on the spot. It is now the first thing I collect in a playthrough.

--Bows are surprisingly useful... But also terrible. Since I was committed to a weaponless playthrough, the first thing I made was a Bow. I also noticed that arrows insta-kill all zombies. If you hit their foot with a bow, they will still drop. It's also Dead silent. With a full quiver, you can go through an entire town killing anything ahead of you without upsetting single zombie. Making arrows is a bit clunky, but also easy because bushes are everywhere and chickens drop feathers in stacks of 20. You'll never run out of materials so long as you have a knife.

Bows also don't seem to take damage from constant use. I only ever needed one bow and by the time I was done, it was still pristine quality.

Firing, however, is a nightmare. You stop to shoot it, there is an agonizingly long drawback time to shoot, and terrible range if you aren't experienced in using the ironsights for the bow. (It turns out your knuckle is the perfect aiming reticle). I don't know when we're getting the recurve bow, but improved accuracy won't mean much until we can walk and shoot.

Naturally it's crap in PVP, but if you're trying to get a long game in, running from players is much safer than returning fire anyhow. Just make sure to spend a few minutes scouting a town before you go in it. Yes, it will spawn a few Zeds, but if you're set up with arrows mowing through them is easy.

--Pumpkins are Bae. All my hunger concerns went out the window as soon as I got farming equipment. Find a pond, set yourself up, and you can spend hours just vegging on pumpkins. Getting fertilizer is almost a non-issue if you are paitent, and only causes a small difference in growing time. Pumpkins are little miracles and one harvest of them is enough to fill half of a barrel. You need a knife to eat them, but with a trusty improvised knife, that won't be a problem. Only problem is that right now, they spawn as Jack-O-Lanterns and their light remains for awhile if you cut them up while holding them. That'll light up your location like a goddamn Christmas tree. My suggestion is to Farm away from your base, then run like heck.

--Settling is useful! Keeping a barrel is fun and safe if you're like me and don't bother keeping guns to begin with. Right now I'm using mine to make a library of books because I needed a hobby. Someone will probably find mine eventually, but I don't keep things in it that are useful to bandits. Unless, of course, they just want the barrel or really want to take a joyride with my crossbow. (I keep it around JIC one day the bolts will be actually feasible to get.)

I mostly store excess knives (I go through them like candy because of arrows), chicken parts, pumpkin slices and knicknacks in them. (Since who knows, maybe the rangefinder will be useful one day). If I lose everything, I always carry an emergency supply of pumpkin seeds in my pot so I can start again.

--Speaking of Pots... I don't think there's a reason to ever not keep a pot on you. It's a water-bottle, a storage container, and an emergency cooking tool all in one, and doesn't take up excess space. They are also extremely hardy; almost to the point where I don't think pots can take durability damage in 0.62. I got my hands on a pristine one at the start of my playthrough and it is still pristine quality even now. Items won't degrade if you keep them in a pot full of water, either.

How about having World War II museums around Chernarus, in the western and northern cities. These museums will spawn variety of things such as old world war II clothing and weaponry. For weaponry it could be ppsh-41, mp40 kar98k, some american weapons and maybe some other weapons used during World War II. Obviously you'd find more German and Soviet clothing/weaponry because Chernarus is located in the eastern front and thats where are large percentage of fighting occured. So those will most likely be the things you'll find. As rare loot, you could possibly find an American Thompson with or without a drum or stick mag, and maybe a British Sten Gun (these are just SOME examples, the possibilities are endless) as well as the Western Ally clothing and much more. I think this could help Chernarus feel a bit more "old-timey" which I would like as well as add some more variety. Let me know what you guys think.

How would this laptop run DayZ?

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 06:13 PM PST

I've played DayZ for over 1000 hours now and I love the game, but on my old laptop, I was never able to get over ~20ish fps on the lowest settings. I'm finally upgrading to a better laptop for college. How would this laptop run DayZ? I'm just looking to get around 40 fps on hopefully medium settings. I just want to be able to play the game effectively for once. Any other suggestions for laptops under $600 would be great.
