Hearthstone - Misconceptions people have about Wild

Misconceptions people have about Wild

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 03:04 AM PST

I read so many misconceptions about the Wild format that it makes me very sad because it's my favorite format :( I feel like lots of people are ignoring the format for very wrong reasons, which I'd like to readdress.

  • Wild is for the rich : No, it's not ! In fact it's the opposite, standard is for the rich. Standard's meta changes a lot after each expansion, a lot more than Wild's meta. Which mean you'll have to craft more of those expensive legendaries & epics to keep up. That doesn't mean Wild is stale, it also changes after each expansion, just less. Many strong new cards become deck building options instead of auto-include. Like in standard, there are several competitive low cost aggro decks. There are not many must-craft wild legendaries : Reno, Brann & Finley (which you can all get in LoE for 20$, with many other strong cards), maybe Mal Ganis and Loatheb, but really that's all if we're talking about competitive decks only. Most other strong wild cards (Mad Scientist, Piloted Shredder, Belcher ...) are rares or commons. And of course you'll never regret crafting them because they'll never rotate.

  • Wild is full of those old cancer cards, I don't want to ever see them again ! : First, please, please, PLEASE forget about Dr Boom, Mysterious Challenger and Piloted Shredder. They see little to no play now. Now let's face it, there will ALWAYS be cards seen as cancer in standard. Yesterday it was Boom, Shredder, Reno, Tunnel Trogg and Totem Golem, today it's Bonemare, Spredding Plague, UI, Keleseth ... Yes those old "cancer" cards are still there in wild, but they are a lot less dominant due to the higher power level of the total card pool.

  • Wild is full of those degenerate Giant decks : No it's not. Giants Hunter is the only deck using the Naga Sea Witch combo, it's not a meta defining deck, it is super weak against aggro. I have faced this deck only twice while climbing to rank 5 this season.

edit : Adding this once since I'm reading it a lot here :

  • I dusted all my wild cards I'll never be able to play Wild :( : It's not too late bro ! Well of course if you dusted Reno and Brann, you won't be able to play the super expensive Reno decks, which are super strong I'm not gonna lie. But really the rest of the competitive decks are really not expensive in dust, most cards you're missing are probably only commons and rares. Look out there for wild meta snapshots (Tempo storm, Vicious Syndicate...) and you'll see !

What would you guys add to this list ?

edit 2 : Thanks all for the upvotes ! I must say I expected lots of downvotes considering Wild's popularity.

I don't think that's a good replacement, Hearthstone

LoL runs at 140fps, Overwatch at 80fps, Diablo 3 at 120fps and Hearthstone... At 20fps.

I've posted here before. Since the patch that introduced the double arena, the game broke for me. I play since the beta and I've never seen nothing like that. I've done EVERYTHING but reinstalling my windows. Does anyone share this problem with me? I just want to play again, for real.

Edit: After I updated my Nvidia driver to the most recent (388.31) version, the problems with fps toned down a bit. While not as smooth as it was before the said patch, It's better for sure.

Hearthstone Past Metas #1 - 2013

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 02:27 PM PST

With a new fresh meta incoming, what better time than this to reminisce about past metas of Hearthstone. In a series of five posts, we will wander through the metas of the past, starting where it all began – in 2013.

2013 – The year of nerfs

In August 16th 2013, the first closed beta testing games were played, starting in the Americas region, and then three weeks later on September 4th in the Europe region.

Right off the bat, one class stood above the others - Rogue. During the first weeks of the beta, believe it or not, the card everyone complained about was [[Defias Ringleader]], when being coined out on turn 1, almost yielding a tempo advantage that was impossible to comeback from. Most of the decks consisted of spells such as Backstab, Shiv, Sap and Eviscerate, which together with Gadgetzan Auctioneer gave birth to the first metabreaker deck, The Miracle Rogue. Some notable inclusions from this time that aren't played today is [[Mana Addict]] and [[Headcrack]].

At the end of September 2013, Sylas gave birth to the Spellpower Druid which also won in one of the first known tournaments, the 2P Hearthstone Invitationals. This deck featured cards like [[Claw]], [[Dalaran Mage]], and [[Starfire]]. Another Druid deck that emerged in the same tournament was the Spoh Ramp Druid with inclusions like [[Hogger]], [[Harvest Golem]] and [[Sen'jin Shieldmaster]].

October 2nd there was a planned wipe of all player's collections, and in the same patch Blizzard changed a multitude of cards. Notably the Rogue class was taken down from its throne by nerfs hitting almost half of the cards that were played in the Miracle list. Shiv went from 1 mana up to 2. Headcrack went from 2 mana up to 3. The Hero Power no longer had the ability to buff a currently equipped weapon, and the so long sought of nerf of Defias Ringleader finally happened, reducing its Health by 1. Even Dalaran Mage was considered too strong, being nerfed from a 2/4 to a 1/4.

However, Rogue wasn't the only class that received that nerf hammer by Blizzard. Druid took a major hit in Wrath and Starfall being unable to hit face. Also Savagery was a core removal tool before, where the card text before said: Deal damage equal to your hero's Attack to all enemy minions.

At the same time, Warrior and Priest was given a major buff to many of their core cards such as Northshire Cleric, Cabal Shadow Priest and Frothing Berserker.

This lead to a massive uprising of the Control Priest in October. However when players figured out that Priests were weak to 4-attack minions, a lot of the players started to sub in cards like [[Chillwind Yeti]] and [[Argent Commander]]. The control Priest deck featured the holy trinity Sylvanas, Ragnaros and Ysera, which acted as a major value engine in the otherwise so remove-oriented Priest class.

In order to counter the Priest, the One-turn-kill-Hunter deck emerged, with the pre-nerf Unleash the Hounds combo. Because of this, control decks started to use more Taunts to counter the combo.

Then came Blizzcon, where the first Blizzcon champion Artosis showed the world the class Paladin. His Paladin deck centered around controlling the board, and laying down our favourite Paladin legendary Tirion Fordring for a massive value bomb. After Blizzcon, the effects of netdecking started to kick in, where a lot of people suddenly started to play Paladin. However, the deck was not that effective on the ladder. Other deck archetypes that were featured in this tournament was the Freeze Mage by for example Reckful, and the Control Warlock.

Over a million players had been invited to the closed beta by November 8th and this was the time players started to realise the power of controlling the board. Many new decks centered around this idea were created, and cards like Defender of Argus, Dark Iron Dwarf and Shattered Sun Cleric was played a lot. These cards are nowadays mostly played in Arena, but during this time, these were the go-to board buff cards when Bonemare didn't exist.

In the end of November, Mage players were tired of the uprising of board-centric decks, and the Freeze Mage deck became even more popular. The idea of freezing the board with spells like Frost Nova, Blizzard and Cone of Cold, with Doomsayer as a board clear was the perfect counter to the meta, and it worked well. Some decks used Alexstraza and burn as the finisher, while others focused on Mountain/Molten Giants. In either case, Mage had shown itself to be a force to be reckoned with.

The first December patch even made things easier for the freeze mage when the OTK-Hunter deck was nerfed due to the change of [[Unleash the Hounds]]. However, a week later, all the board freeze cards (Frost Nova, Blizzard and Cone of Cold) were increased in mana cost by 1. Bonus salt.

The last deck that came to birth in 2013 was the One-turn-kill-Warrior (Video). When mages dropped massively in popularity due to the nerf, OTK decks were now viable again because of Ice Block not being in the meta. This deck appeared to be the new meta-breaker and many nerfs were to come to set the meta straight again.

Recap – notable decks:

Hope you enjoyed it. Next time we will move to 2014 and the uprising of Undertaker Hunter and the metabreaker that was the Naxxramas expansion as a whole. Until then, have a great time in the Hearth!

PSA: Battle.net store updated with Canadian pricing.. and they are slightly under the US price!

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 01:53 PM PST

Costs are as follows:

2 packs: 3.75CAD (2.94USD)

7 packs: 12.49CAD (9.79USD)

15 packs: 24.99CAD (19.60USD)

40 packs: 62.99CAD (49.37USD)

60 packs: 87.99CAD (68.69USD)

Preorder: 62.99CAD (49.37USD)

overall I'm happy that they implemented these changes, to avoid currency conversion fees and i commend blizzard for not hiking up the prices in the process of this switch!

I dont know how the price changes affect NZ or Japanese players but I dont think there as bad as people have made them out to be.

Hearthstone Trinity Series Season 2 Week 7 Recap

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 08:50 AM PST

Hearthstone Trinity Series season 2 is a team league played in autumn 2017. The first stage of the tournament is a seven-week online round robin, after which the top four teams will compete in live finals. The prize pool of the tournament is $150,000.

Week 7 VODs:

Week 7 results:

  • G2 Esports vs Virtus.pro 3-6

  • Team Love U Lots vs Tempo Storm 3-6

  • Misfits vs Planet Odd 1-6

  • Complexity vs Team Liquid 6-4

Final round robin standings:

  • Planet Odd 4-3

  • Team Liquid 4-3

  • Virtus.pro 4-3

  • Complexity 4-3

  • Team Love U Lots 3-4

  • Misfits 3-4

  • G2 Esports 3-4

  • Tempo Storm 3-4

The top four teams will play in live finals from December 8th to December 10th 2017.

However, there is a twist. Planet Odd declined their spot, because the team will be in China during the live finals. As a result, the four teams that advance to the live finals are Team Liquid, Virtus.pro, Complexity, and Team Love U Lots.

With the entire round robin concluded, we can take a look at the overall performance of classes over the past seven weeks.

Class performance throughout the round robin stage:

  • Paladin 42-32

  • Warlock 48-35

  • Hunter 11-10

  • Druid 5-5

  • Priest 1-1

  • Warrior 36-37

  • Shaman 29-33

  • Rogue 28-37

  • Mage 29-39

(Note that these are compiled from archetype performance, so some class mirrors are included when two different archetypes have faced against each other - the effect is very minor, adding an even number of wins and losses to some of the classes)

Paladin and Warlock were the dominant classes in this mostly no Druids and no Priests format. Rogue and Mage suffered the most.

There were two widely played archetypes that found a lot of success in round robin:

  • Zoolock 21-14

  • Murloc Paladin 33-25

Of the lesser played archetypes, some had good records but with very low sample sizes:

  • Handlock 5-2

  • Control Paladin 5-2

  • Exodia Mage 7-5

Other archetypes with at least 20 games played failed to rise above mediocre:

  • Control Warlock 22-19

  • Midrange Hunter 11-10

  • Taunt Warrior 13-13

  • N'Zoth Control Warrior 12-12

  • Control Mage 14-16

  • Evolve Shaman 29-33

  • Tempo Rogue 24-34

These results perhaps give some indication on what the meta would look like without Druid and Priest. Druid and Priest got in a couple of games early on, but were uniformly banned for most of the tournament, especially in the last weeks.

Would Dr Boom see play in Standard?

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 08:21 AM PST

I was seeing the post about how Wild format is a great format, (https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/7dk6a0/misconceptions_people_have_about_wild/) and read the Dr. Boom was no longer played much in Wild. Before the format separation, Dr. Boom was an auto include. What changed? And would Dr. Boom see play in Standard?

Also, what wild card would be played a lot more in Standard? (Besides Reno)

What it's like to play Control Paladin

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 01:39 PM PST

... didn't get equality in the mulligan again.

... need to draw equality soon

... I'm running low on ways to stall here

... I've drawn half my deck now, where the cluck is equality?

... Maybe I can get one from Ivory Knight

... I've healed for 4,566,436,235 but it's not going to be enough if I can't clear this board.

... Only 4 cards left in the deck. I need this 50/50 to stay in the game.

... is never heard from again

Next game

... got them both in my opening hand!

... it's a combo priest with virtually no minions

...

...

... :`(
