DEAR NIANTIC - ideas, suggestions, complaints for our overlords [Meta]

Posted: 07 May 2017 09:01 AM PDT

Hey Niantic! You guys made a game we all have a lot of feelings about...and this is our spot to express those feelings and make some statements about ways we think the game could be even better for us - and by extension, you!

Here you will find ideas and suggestions, requests and complaints - a mix of the positive posts and constructive criticism that reddit's Pokemon Go community have compiled and discussed and up/downvoted by importance and validity for us all. If there's one post on /r/pokemongo you guys should be paying attention to, it's this one, so please do.

Hey /r/PokemonGo Trainers! This recurring weekly post is for you guys - we'll be aggregating a Top 10 list every month based on which top-level comments in this thread get the most user response, so please look for that near the end of each month as well.

Sort posts by "top" to see what has been voted most important so far, but consider sorting by "new" as well to weigh in on the most recent ideas!

Please pay attention to the /r/PokemonGo rules for commenting behavior and civility, and use the report button when necessary to alert the mods to any post or thread that needs a review!

Just a little story I hope is ok to share.

Posted: 07 May 2017 07:16 PM PDT

I'm a mom to a 2 1/2 year old daughter. She had a gross motor delay when PoGo came out last year and had just began walking. At the time it was easier for me to play more often since she wasn't as mobile as other kids her age. She sat on my lap spinning stops and popping the bubbles.

She's since been diagnosed with high functioning autism and is testing at cognitively 5 years old. Now she wants to run around and play with every older kid she sees. She has her own PoGo account and loves walking her buddy Spinarak. She gets super excited when she manages to take out (only) the bottom defender and happily places "Mousey" in the gym. She will ignore a Blissey to catch a "Snakey". But she really wants a "Giant Dragon".

Right now in our town some of the buses and trains have an advertisement for Thomas the tank. She has always called the train the Thomas train but now it really is the Thomas train to her. There's also been frequent ads on PBS kids for a character from Daniel Tigers Neighborhood who is going to make an appearance at a free event this week. She lights up when she sees both the bus/train ads and the TV ads.

I mention this because next week I will be 40. Its been a long time since I got excited over an advertisement. And I don't think I ever shared the same joy at choosing a buddy Pokemon and only the first time I took a gym did I feel the same sense of pride she feels. I mean even catching rares I already have doesn't bring the same sense of excitement her 100th pidgey brings her.

But I did play Pokemon when it came out, I mean Gen 1. I was past childhood, in that weird part where your now legally an adult but you still feel like a child. Its not like a switch goes off and you turn 18 and now your an adult. Time makes you one though and you forgot what its like to be a kid.

I'm reliving my childhood though her and with Pokemon Go it makes it easier to be a kid again. I hope people remember this when complaining about the gyms or that gen 3 isn't out. In the end it's a game and it should bring us the same joy it brings my daughter and all the other kids who play. There's so much "missing" still from the game but to her it's just perfect.

[Suggestion] Pokemon in Gyms should show the location where the Pokemon was caught

Posted: 07 May 2017 04:51 PM PDT

Reasons why:

1) Would be a fun way to see where people may be visiting an area from

2) Could create rivalries where towns may go to war to take over each others turf

3) Could help identify bots when they place new generation Pokemon caught in Japan and Australia 2 days after release

Thoughts?

Event appreciation

Posted: 07 May 2017 07:12 PM PDT

I know the event isn't over yet, and it certainly had its hiccups (soft bans, grass types not spawning in certain biomes) but I think this is an important event.

This is the first "weekend" event as far as I can remember. They made it clear that this event would begin on Friday and end on Monday. There wouldn't be any crazy deals or double XP or stardust or anything like that, but lures would last 6 hours (the best perk IMO) and grass types would spawn more frequently.

I live on a small campus (2500 students in a rural part of upstate NY) and we have 8 pokestops in total spread across campus. Since the event has started, at least 2 have been lured constantly (except for at night). I've seen people out playing even in shitty weather. I've personally caught both of the grass starters 3rd evolution forms (one on a lure and one normal spawn). My friends who hadn't had many grass type candy before this event have been going crazy with all the spawns.

It's okay that it's just for the weekend. A short burst of lots of playing is a great way to bring players back to the game and keep them playing.

I also think that 6 hour lures are the best perk they've ever given us in events for several reasons. 1, 30 minute lures are too short. That's what, 6 pokemon for 100 coins? Not worth it. 2, Lures encourage socializing because everyone benefits from them and they're isolated in one spot, so it brings people together. 3, niantic benefits from the increased lure sales. Niantic needs to benefit too, and selling more pokecoins is sure to happen during an event like this.

So basically, I want to show my appreciation for this little event. It's not the biggest or best event, but it's perfect for a weekend.

GRASS EVENT - EXPECTATION VS REALITY [fixed]

After hatching only 1 Doduo and never seeing any of them in the wild, I finally walked my buddy to enough candies to finish my Gen 1 'dex!

I found (and bought) this Pokémon go uno game. Seems legit.

So this is how water biome people felt in the water festival event.

Posted: 07 May 2017 08:43 AM PDT

I'm scrolling through this sub and seeing "oh my gosh I finally got an ivysaur" or "these pink eggs/tangela actually exist?!" And I think to myself that it's crazy how those super common daily catches for me are someone's missing pokedex entry. If there's one thing that I love about this game it's that spawn diversity depending on location is a really good thing. It makes average/not good Pokemon still an exciting thing to find.

Can we continue having these interactions, Niantic?

Posted: 07 May 2017 01:43 PM PDT

I've talked about this these suggestions in as many words as have many others before. But, now with Niantic Support taking a more active role on reddit, I feel this is still a good platform for them to see something to continue to improve on and I appreciate them taking communication more seriously, especially from the support staff members Indigo and George. Hopefully you guys in the community and at Niantic can see the merit in the content of this post and not jump to a conclusion of it being negative for trying to ask or trying to get a conversation going.

First, I want to congratulate the current efforts of /u/NianticGeorge and /u/NianticIndigo, and to encourage more 1-1 interactions with Niantic in the future. I know you guys may not read this, or be able to respond. But I wanted to thank you and offer some advice. I love how you two have given have given the community a sense of being heard by a small gesture like acknowledging you have heard of issues and addressing the community directly on reddit has helped far more than a generic briefing on social media weeks later. I hope the dev team can see aswell that reddit CAN be a place to interact with fans and not be toxic.

I think certain things would definitely encourage more of this type of communication. For example, it would be cool if you guys had an official forum space on pokemongolive where we can add feedback directly, and get news in a more detailed form, directly from you guys. In addition, maybe a Community Manager who can hop between golive and reddit to interact and answer questions, give previews. I think the Social Media person asking users to post pictures is fine for the more casual base, but when dedicated fans want to know details, we are often left high and dry. The forum and a dedicated representative can help to alleviate this.

As well, I know some players and the Youtubers themselves had felt early on some sort of collaboration between Niantic and Pokemon Go Youtubers could be possible and make for awesome and exciting content. Well, now is the time! With so many new features in the works, collaboration with channels is definitely one surefire way of bringing free publicity and awareness to your product that social media alone, can't do. You already have fans with established channels with a sizeable following, why not use them to promote content as new features come out so that more people become aware of it through following them? I made a post before on dozens of channels that cover the game that could be a good place to start.

In closing, I hope you guys can continue to interact directly like this and more and hope some of the suggestions above can resonate and possibly be implemented.

[story] rollercoaster hatch, evolution, Pokedex completion

Posted: 07 May 2017 09:21 PM PDT

This evening I completed my Pokedex Gen 1 & 2 (without travel...still missing corsola, heracross, farfetch'd, kangaskhan, and mr. Mime) and here's the story.

I have been sitting on the final few evolutions that I needed to complete the dex and just waiting on hatching a tyrogue with the correct IV's to get my Hitmontop. 5K egg starts to go off, come on Tyrogue, oh snap it is a Tyrogue! Appraise...wonder...HP!!!...and attack.......Well. Obviously you have to take that risk and hope for the best. Put on a lucky egg andaway we went; Typhlosion, Bayleaf, Meganium, Croconaw, Feraligatr, Pupitar, Tyranitar, and....Hitmontop. It was a good night.

Looking forward to the gym rework and thanks for reading.
