Smite - Removing Rituals & Balance Discussion

Removing Rituals & Balance Discussion

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 01:53 PM PDT

Hey Everyone,

In our patch launching tomorrow we will be removing Rituals from the item store. We wanted to take some time to explain why we are making this change, our plans with Rituals moving forward, and a bit of design philosophy when it comes to leaving items untouched for a while when it comes to balance.

Rituals did fit our initial goal. They gave interesting and powerful choices for players during the later stages of a game. At high levels of play though we saw teams heavily rely on them in ways that felt unfair or allow teams to make up for misplays. Rituals covered up for your mistakes rather than enabling skillful plays.

Based on heavy pro and community feedback around Rituals we are removing them for now while we investigate other potential solutions. These solutions will need to be tested, iterated on, and will require additional work that will need some time. We want to bring back late game choices Rituals provided without allowing them to water down late game decision making. As we get closer to this final version we will keep you guys updated on our progress.

We have also been reading a ton of your feedback since Rituals were initially presented and there was one recurring question that we saw. Why do some balance/gameplay changes remain for a long time when they seem clearly busted/bad? When going through the process of pulling a feature/item it is good to reflect on how we evaluate balance as time goes on, and the Balance Team would like to share some thoughts in this regard.

Balancing a game like SMITE is a challenge due to the amount of moving parts and interconnections of all the things at play. Nerfing X item could result in Y God being weak which allows Z god to flourish. This cycle can not only occur right as a balance change is made but also as players develop new strategies and Metas. While there are a few strong examples of this already this Season, the strongest example may be Skadi.

Skadi was largely seen as gutted and the buff to her movement speed on Permafrost would be insignificant in helping her. Internally however we saw a very different picture at all levels of play and as pro-level play picked up on this strength the perception of her viability has severely changed. We are still monitoring her now, but we have multiple high level players suggesting nerfs to her.

The reason we bring her up as an example are twofold. First, through the years the balance team has learned a lesson about knee-jerk changes based on perception since perception can fluctuate heavily. Second, by having changes run its course over a few patch cycles new lessons can be learned that will influence future changes for the better. This doesn't mean we are always correct and we strive to make changes when your feedback is pointing out a problem, but finding the balance between allowing things to play out versus quick adjustments is key.

Looking back to Rituals, they followed a very different pattern from Skadi. When released they were seen as frustrating and too strong. As time went on they became more frustrating and saw more widespread use. We nerfed them and the problem still got worse. We nerfed them again as things continued to get worse. This shows a core issue at play rather than something that would even out over time. Removing it now makes more sense than leaving it in as we work on a solution for the problems.

Rituals were expected to be controversial but the team wanted to give it a fair shot out in the wild. By allowing it to run its course over a few patch cycles we have much more feedback about what was liked and disliked about the system which will influence future changes down the road and the decision today to remove it can be made with confidence.

We will stick around this thread today and try to answer any questions concerning balance adjustments and changes with the balance team. We think one thing we could be better on is giving you guys the best information possible about changes being made to better inform constructive dialogue about SMITE.

Tl;dr

Rituals are being removed in 4.5. We now have the data to be confident in removing them. Expect future changes to bring back the positive aspects of Rituals while removing the negatives.

If Smite is doing genderbent, we need Female Poseiden!

Let's talk about Gender Bent skins

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 07:07 PM PDT

I can't believe this is even something we're arguing about. Firstly, there's nothing wrong with the idea of a gender bent skin. Boy to girl, or girl to boy.

The issue however, is that for the COMMUNITY SKIN CONTEST. It should be a theme that actually has a lot of room for artists to do whatever with. Like Sci-Fi. That can go SO MANY PLACES.

Genderbent Awilix: Here's Awilix(male) without a shirt. And uhhh shorts.

My Awilix(male) has a pony tail!

THAT'S NOT INTERESTING. We can have gender bent skins just normally, any other time. We get community skins ONCE a year. We got Awilix THE WAIFU OF ALL WAIFUS THIS YEAR, AND YOU WANT TO MAKE HER A GUY?! WHEN WE HAVE CONCEPTS LIKE PLAYFUL SPIRIT?! WTFFFFFFFF

Sorry I had to just get that out. Having a theme is stupid. It should've just been whatever concepts, although having a theme does keep us from getting another gods damn demonic skin.

That's all I had to say on the subject.

7 Deadly Sins Themed Skins (NOT THE ANIME)

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 03:43 PM PDT

One of my friends and I were talking and discussing this post and thought of some skin concepts that involve the 7 deadly sins. Some of these are lore based, god in-game ability based, or by looks. Some ideas we came up with were:

  • 1) Pride (many gods fit this description): Zeus, Nox, Hou Yi, Ra, and Susano
  • 2)Greed: Fafnir
  • 3)Lust: Bastet, Aphrodite, Freya, and Cupid
  • 4)Envy: Athena
  • 5)Gluttony: Bakasura and Bacchus (maybe)
  • 6)Wrath(many gods fit in this description) : Ares, Bellona, Susano, Kali, and The Morrigan
  • 7). Sloth: Kumbhakarna

I'm sure someone has brought up this idea already, maybe not, but either way would be cool to see this happen. Let me know what you guys think :D

Smite's april fools list of ideas

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 06:23 AM PDT

So here are some of my ideas how to make fun stuff for April fools. Feel free to add to the list yourself.

  • All gamemodes give random gods except assault which lets you pick

  • All skins are available except T5 and Nu Wa's skins

  • Nu Wa gets tagged as exclusive and is unable to be bought that day, at all

  • Instead of favor, players get Ruby gems, which are red recolorations of gems. They do absolutely nothing and dissapear next day

  • Gods models are randomised so you can see Ymir riding Appolo's chariot and etc.

  • The Morrigan ult transforms her into jungle camps

  • Apophis can now move when spawned and locks on and targets closest player when spawning. When that player is killed, Apophis moves onto next person.

  • Jungle camp rune belts have randomised colors

  • Skadi is followed by Artemis's Tusky instead of Kaldr

  • In Bonus Round of Arena there is lava in the circle too, leaving players with just enough space for their character to stay on, but not to move, hope you have ranged ability team

  • Snow falls in Clash

  • Ults can be used only once per game

  • Victory and defeat screens and images are reversed

  • Titan has random chance of healing 25% each time he is hit

r/Smite SPL Player Tier List!

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 03:33 PM PDT

A few days ago I posted a survey asking how good the Smite community thinks each SPL player is. They were to give a rating of 1-7, 1 being garbage and 7 being godlike. It was a huge success with over 1000 votes! Thank you all for your participation. With the conclusion of the Spring Split I also have the results. I've split them up into regions, roles, and teams as well. Without further adieu, here is the Unofficial r/Smite SPL Player Tier List!

There Should be an Event where all Exclusive skins are directly purchasable for 1,000 Gems.

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 07:43 AM PDT

That way there's an alternative way to get that skin you've been trying to get for a reasonable price instead of buying gems, blowing them all on one chest, not getting the item then making a post on how you hate chests, only to do it all over again.

The event should only occur 1 every 2 (or more) months. That way, chests are still relevant.

Edit: Rather than occurring 1 time every 2 or more months, it should occur 1 time every year. Making chests remain 100% relevant

Hello, r/Smite, would you please fill my survey for my research paper?

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 10:15 AM PDT

Hello, r/Smite. I am writing a research paper for my university on the link between online games (mainly team-based ones) and the study of foreign languages. If you would be so kind as to spend 5 minutes of your time to fill my survey, I would be really glad.

So some of you guys liked my drawing I made earlier, so I decided to turn it into an icon. Icon Idea: Stick-Xian.

Do you guys lose interest in a god when they're meta?

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 12:21 PM PDT

For example i used to play Medusa and Hercules all the time and i was even on my way to get them rank 10, then season 4 happened. Now everyone is playing as those gods and i don't feel as unique anymore :(

Infographic | 2017 SPL Spring Split Week Six

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 03:28 PM PDT

With the conclusion of Week 6, the online portion of the Spring Split has wrapped up. And man, what a way to end. With so many possibilities of tiebreakers in the the teams' battles for a secured spot to the Spring Finals, Week 6 definitely delivered in action. That being said, I've got an infographic as a way to summarize some statistics incase you missed it:

Full-Sized Infographic Half-Sized Infographic Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3

And if you're interested, you can take a look at the spreadsheet I used for these statistics.

Also note that this infographic is heavily based off of the one used for NA LCS.

Other than that, please leave some feedback as to how to improve upon this, comment any statistics you find interesting, or point out any errors that I have made. Thank you all of the continued support, I hope to have one for the Gauntlet and the Spring Finals in April. :)

A Humble Request: Young Male Mage

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 08:25 AM PDT

A request from a mage main, purely for some diversity and a bit more lively energy in Smite.

You see, it is a general stereotype that mages are the wise elders of some sort and I think that Smite is missing that young sorcerer. Someone as young as Sol, consequently, Mani comes to mind as the first candidate.

All male mages in Smite just seem to be quite grown up.

How Not To Kill Dimi

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 10:26 AM PDT

What if you could only buy one of each ritual per game?

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 11:18 AM PDT

Rather than every late game fight being a race to see who can pop their 4 frenzies first with everyone blinking everywhere, you just have one ritual - one point where you say we need to win this fight, we need to spend the gold.

Could become a mind game too - always wanting to save your frenzy and not waste it, but risking losing if the other team uses theirs first and you can't answer

also means we'll actually see rituals like revealing ritual (yes it still exists)

just gives relics their feel of being a big gamechanger, which is what i think they were meant to be, rather than being constantly spammed and making every late game fight an absolute clown fiesta

Just an idea :)
