On Halo World Championship 2017 Finals

Posted: 29 Mar 2017 01:07 PM PDT

Hey folks, we just released some cool news and numbers from Halo World Championship 2017, but I wanted to follow up specifically regarding the venue and talk about some of the feedback we received from attendees.

We know that the Halo World Championship comes with the expectation of a great broadcast experience, but it should also be a thrilling in-person experience that matches the level of investment that the community and players dedicate to Halo esports.

While we created our biggest broadcast event yet – with record numbers making this the most viewed event in HCS history – a few aspects of the in-person viewing experience for attending fans didn't meet expectations and that's something we will work hard to improve for future events.

I personally had an amazing time at the event, and the fans and players I talked to had a blast. But in talking to them, there were legitimate criticisms, constructive feedback and some great ideas for future events.

We will do better and deliver what the Halo community deserves – the best. In fact, we're already well underway in planning for our Summer and Fall Pro Leagues, with fantastic venues - and will incorporate feedback and learnings from HaloWC to improve that in-person experience.

The HCS team is made up of fans who are passionate about Halo esports, including our HaloWC partners in ESL, Millennial Esports, Gfinity, Gamelta, and UGC. We're dedicated to growing the scene and know that we still have so much more to do. Thank you to the entire Halo community for your continued support of the Halo Championship Series and Halo esports, and thank you to those that dedicate their lives to competing in it.

Red Vs. Blue Season 15 Teaser Trailer

"The #HaloWC 2017 Finals had more than 135,000 concurrent viewers & 13 million unique viewers!"

What would get you hyped for Halo 6? What would kill your interest?

Posted: 29 Mar 2017 05:17 AM PDT

I'm curious to know what might get your heart rate going if you read it in an article or saw it at E3 and what would make you say "nope, never going to buy that." For me,

Hype:
* A return to the old art direction, or a solid mix of both companies like Halo Wars 2.
* A plethora of game modes at launch, including Invasion, BTB, and all of the classics.
* A theater as innovative and improved as the new Forge. (I spent hours rewatching campaign and multiplayer matches making clips and photos.) * Similarly, recording that is separate from Game DVR. It's so awkward having to "pause, snap DVR, start recording, snap Halo 5, unpause, attempt to work the camera, pause, snap DVR, stop recording, wait, visit xboxdvr.com, download your clip" and you can't share it in-game. Halo 3 and Reach was "press record, upload to file share, visit Bungie.net."
* Customization that lets you work towards an armor you want, be it via achievements or saving up points.
* The old Elites return and more time spent with the Arbiter.
* Warzone variant that's actually on a chaotic warzone. Roaming and environmental AI everywhere, no bullet sponges with health bars (maybe a few scary big-bads that have heavy shields or armor that you can break), limited REQs, pre-spawned vehicles available at each team's fire base.
* Firefight a la ODST and Reach.
* Encountering and fighting mixed human-alien factions described in the books, or factions like The Banished. Those are waaay more interesting than Prometheans and Created (which will probably be blue Prometheans). * ONI espionage.
* More involved Independent Colonies stories, not just a few grumbles of "we don't take kindly to your type 'round here" by NPCs on Meridian.
* Spartans moving like John Wick: hard-trained and disciplined killing machines. Right now they move like MCU characters. Halo 5 and Age of Ultron pretty much share the same opening.

Things that would make me immediately consider dumping the franchise:
* "REQs, REQs, and more REQs! Microtransactions for everyone! The power provided with this new console allows us to cram 300 more mongoose skins and white stripes into the game! We're listing the $50 and $100 packs before all other options in the menu again! Because that's subtle."
* "So I heard you like Warden Eternal." God, I hope we never see that cringe inducing white knight ever again. This is a rare time I would accept another "he died offscreen" hand wave.
* More Avengers superhero Spartans that look like they belong in Mass Effect or the Power Rangers reboot. I didn't sign up for that.
* I praised HW2's artstyle, but those marines in the menu and blitz artwork... Talk about generic. They look like "hut hut hut" no-name goons designed to killed in the background. Reach, HW2 & H2:A cutscenes (best), and the main trilogy were iconically "Halo" and felt, I don't know, "human."
* Prometheans. Waaay too much focus on Prometheans lately. They're so boring.
* Ground pound. I don't see how that works in canon and Spartans look really silly or over the top doing it in cutscenes. It's literally a superhero move.
* An even more forced Tyrant Cortana and AI uprising story. I'm flat out not interested in the Created. Simple as that. Shame that Halo's take on AI used to be so cool and unique, too. * Cortana's current design. Somehow she went from sharp, angular facial structure and features to this weird round, puffy, babyfaced look. Something about it just looks off and I can't take any of her appearances seriously.
* We still won't let you customize emblems. This current gen game is lacking a feature that Halo 2 had... That emblem was my identity through most of the following games.
* Textures continue to be really bad. Reach, an older game on older hardware, has better textures. Even Halo 3 looks better in places than 5.
* Similarly, more styrofoam textured spartan armor. * I can't explain how, but the modeling for helmets and armors looks really "action figure-ish," like it's been formed out of one piece or resin cast. Details like vents, visors, sensors, and lights look like just that: carved on details. Not actual, physical, working vents, sensors, and lights. Its glaringly obvious that the helmets have been roughly shaped and modeled in a computer program and that they are not something that has been built by factories within that world. Maybe it's the texturing making it stand out. It's really noticeable on Operator Gen 1's headpiece. Sometimes the proportions seem off too.
* Another T rating.

Where was this anti sprint movement when they were polling after the beta?

Posted: 29 Mar 2017 12:00 PM PDT

I was in the vast minority of people voted against sprint during the beta feedback polling. I think the final numbers were 10 - 20 % voted no to sprint. The irony now is, I enjoy sprint, I enjoy halo 5 as a game and don't think it needs fixing. It's just not mainstream compared to COD and CSGo.

So to this movement who want's sprint removed. 343 listened while the game was in production. They polled and they adjusted their game to what people wanted. Now the community wants the exact opposite...because Snipedown doesn't like it?

If you're someone who has changed their mind that's fine. But don't accuse 343 of not listening to their fanbase. I've seen a lot of that on the forums and frankly, 343 listens more than any other developer that I can think of.

[Warning-long] Honest Thoughts from Halo World Championship Attendee

Posted: 29 Mar 2017 10:32 PM PDT

Disclaimer: My wife and I were fortunate enough to purchase legendary passes to the event, so I was afforded some luxuries that other attendees were not

I have been following the various reactions to the World Championship events that transpired last weekend on twitter, reddit, team beyond, etc, so I am aware of the pictures, thoughts, and opinions that have been circulating. I wanted to write up a post giving my perspective as an attendee.

First, I want to bring up some of the things that made last weekend one of the most memorable experiences of my gaming life. For one, there was so much free swag. The guys from the 343i merch team had a big tent set up with tons of Halo stuff. I'm talking probably $10,000 worth of merchandise. Multiple astro headsets/mixamps, Mo-cap props that the actors used in H5, tons of toys (boom-co guns, mega-blocks, action figures, figurines), soundtracks, books, Blu-rays, clothes, and more. When I walked up to the tent on the first day, I said "Oh cool, are you guys selling all this stuff here?" Pudding4Jeffery (343i merch team) said "No, we are giving all of it away." Pretty sweet. Throughout the weekend, they drew raffle tickets and handed this stuff out every half hour. At the end of the event, when they had a bunch of swag left over, they literally started throwing it into the audience. They also gave out stuff during the breaks at the main stage and at the viewing tent.

Another cool thing was a scavenger hunt. They placed a bunch of clues in envelopes all around the studio campus, which had you do various things to get then next clue. We had to solve halo word scrambles, take pictures playing halo wars at the fanfare tent, and say secret phrases to the talent/staff that were wandering around. The prize for the winners was really cool – a limited edition collection of the awesome Halo Wars 2 street art, Master Chief hoodie, and figurines.

Because the event was on the smaller side, and because of things like the scavenger hunt, my wife and I were able to meet a ton of awesome folks. We got to meet Bravo, Simms, Wonderboy, Walshy, Strongside, and others and they had the time to chat for more than just a moment. We also got to spend quality time with the players. If any of the attendees wanted a pic with any pro player, they easily could have had it. They were chilling around the event whenever their games weren't happening. It honestly was pretty cool – very intimate setting. I can say with certainty that it was worth the trip. I've got memories that will last a lifetime.

One thing that helps, I think, is that our expectations were not set very high. I've been somewhat frustrated with the negativity that has exploded in reaction to the events, especially from others who attended the event. It seems to me that most people's pain seems to have come from a case of miss-managed expectations.

It is, I think, unfortunate that ESL/343 were not able to secure a more impressive venue for what was supposed to be the grand culmination of a year of competitive Halo. It would have been nice to have a bigger crowd. The hype would have been higher, and more halo fans would have been able to directly witness the best players duke it out. I have seen some (unsubstantiated) rumors that the organizations involved had plans for a different venue that unfortunately fell through. This would not surprise me.

HOWEVER, 343i and ESL were completely transparent in the lead-up to the event regarding the nature of the venue and the tickets. I have no sympathy for the attendees who are lambasting 343 and ESL and asking for refunds/reparations for the money/effort they spent in getting to the championship. The descriptions of options on Eventbrite were very clear that ONLY the legendary passes were guaranteed seating at the main stage, and a map of the venue was provided – showing clearly that it was not a large space. When my wife and I examined the offerings when the tickets were about to go on sale, we agreed that we would not make the long and expensive trip out to Burbank from our home in Pennsylvania if we were unable to secure legendary tickets. For those people who, in their minds, wasted their time and money for a 2-day/3-day pass – It's on you; I firmly believe that. I challenge you to reevaluate your decision-making process when spending hundreds/thousands of dollars in the future.

It also was apparent that ESL/343 prioritized the streaming audience for the event. This was hands down the best organized event as far as the stream is concerned. The games were consistently ahead of schedule, breaks were short, and communication regarding stream issues was delivered quickly. I don't know if you guys remember some of the frustrations that have occurred in the past, like games running until 2AM or countdown timers that reset five times before the stream started. The organizations involved clearly heard our concerns regarding stream quality in the past, and responded with a tour-de-force. As far as I am aware, the only delays in the stream were caused by internet issues – not controllable by the staff on hand. (would be solved with LAN support in H5… but that's a separate issue entirely). At points, it definitely felt as if the stream viewers were given priority over the event attendees. Cameramen were frequently standing in front of the stage, blocking our view of the screen – which I will admit was very annoying. However when we brought up the issue via email with ESL, they responded within minutes and had a discussion with the media people/camera operators to avoid those angles. It is very possible that, from the get-go, 343 and ESL decided to make this event a quality streaming experience first and foremost, and because of that, there were some unfortunate side effects for the live audience who were not prioritized despite the cost of tickets.

Overall – there are definitely valid criticisms. But it was clear that the management was very dedicated to providing the best possible experience for attendees considering the circumstances. And yes – the circumstances could possibly have more favorable – but I am not abreast of everything that contributed to things being the way they were. All I know is that all the staff there were incredibly kind, hospitable, and willing to go above and beyond. I went into the weekend just expecting to see some of my favorite players play a game I love better than I will ever be able to, and I left with my expectations satisfied and exceeded.

TL;DR: HaloWC was absolutely worth the trip across country for me because my expectations were realistic based on the info provided beforehand. Size of venue was unfortunate, but they treated the attendees really well, and the stream was top-notch.

Fireteam member just banned from game?

Posted: 29 Mar 2017 11:35 PM PDT

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a typical "WAHH 343 PLS UNBAN" post-- we're genuinely confused here and would like it if someone with more knowledge than us would explain.

Me and my cousin were playing Halo 5: Guardians on "Infection" mode, we'd been playing for hours with no issue, no quitting (aside from one involuntary disconnection by the game earlier in the night) or any foul play whatsoever. During a particular match of Infection, my cousin-- who is not very good with avoiding pitfalls in maps he's unfamiliar with-- managed to commit suicide "3 or 4 times" (according to him-- I cannot see suicides in the Carnage Report) on accident, at which time he was kicked from the game and from the fireteam.

Upon rejoining-up, my cousin THEN received a message that "The banhammer strikes" and that he would be banned until July !!

As far as I know and as my cousin can remember, he has absolutely no prior issues or conflicts with the game that would warrant such a ban. We'd never been kicked from a game for teamkilling or anything of that nature. We tend to take the game very seriously, as we play it almost every day, and aren't of the particular nature to enjoy griefing.

Does anyone know why such a severe penalty (3 whole months!?) would be given, or why it would ban him from all of multiplayer? This has come so out-of-nowhere that we're almost certain it has to be a technical mistake and not a legitimate penalty for less than a handful of suicides. I can understand-- and assume-- that repeated suicides is going to be a penalty but is it really commonplace in Halo 5 that it be a literal season-long ban??

EDIT: Now he's unbanned? We left and played a game of Overwatch only to come back and see that he can get on now.

EDIT 2: Nope, still banned.. I think? All the options are now greyed out for him, saying nothing about a ban.

EDIT 3: Uhh.. OK, he's unbanned. He reveals that the date wasn't specified as "July" but that he would be banned "until 7.01", which he took as a date (July 1st)-- Was he banned for seven minutes??
