Am I the Only One Worried About Over-Saturation?
Posted: 23 Dec 2016 11:40 AM PST
I'm all for the resurgence of Smash 64 and even Brawl, and One Unit is great, but I feel like...we don't need every smash game at every tournament that isn't strictly a smash event.
I've been hearing people talk about 64 being at Dreamhack and Brawl somehow making a comeback at Evo. Don't you guy think 4 smash game is a little overdoing it? 64 and Brawl at Genesis, SSC, TBH, CEO Dreamland, yeah I get it. I'm all for all 4 games being there, but I just think that as a spectator I would want just Melee and Smash 4 at other events like Evo, Dreamhack (lets go Smash 4 Dreamhack!), etc.
Someone tell me if I'm wrong and why, but I really just feel like we would be over-saturating the other tournaments.
Edit: I'm just an idiot who loves smash and doesn't want to make us look like entitled babies who are whining for all of our games to be at traditionally "not exclusively smash" events. Don't take my opinions to heart, but keep up the discussion. thumbs up

Japan Smash Cup 2016 Tournament (Tokai) is tonight! Ft. Moyashi, kysk, Fukurou, Bonobono, Nangoku, Yu-kun, Cafe, Maguro, Kurabba, Wangera, and G3 Champion, Wario.
Posted: 23 Dec 2016 05:55 PM PST
One of the most anticipated Smash 64 tournaments of the year is starting tonight at 12:30AM EST!
It has a ¥200,000 (~$2,000) prize pool from sponsors, which has never happened in Japan. Wario has even registered for the tournament having been on a long hiatus since winning Genesis 3! Many strong players have registered such as Wangera, Fukurou, kysk, Maguro, Moyashi, Kurabba, Bonobono, Cafe, Nangoku, Shizuku, Hiyo, and Merihim!
Translation from Tournament Management:
This is expected to be a large scale tournament. Lack of equipment (consoles, CRTs) might be a problem. So we want players and spectators to bring equipment. We might offer discounts or some other reward for doing so.
And this time of the tournament we are very thankful for the support of our sponsors. If we get more participants, we can get more sponsors. So because of the success of this tournament, we want to gather the participants or spectators. Friends, I would like to invite those who are interested in Smash Bros. 64. For the development of the future of the 64 Smash Bros. world, is a selfish hope but thank you for your cooperation please.

Who Are the Nicest Smashers?
Posted: 23 Dec 2016 06:24 AM PST
Who are the nicest smashers in any of the smash games? I've heard lots of stories about how many smash players are way nicer than expected when people meet them at tourneys and such.
EDIT(s): Axe seems to be one of the favorites, I hope I can meet him soon! (It's a few hours later, and the Axe commendations just keep coming! wow!) "Surprisingly", HBox isn't actually the literal definition of sin and bad manners. In fact, I've heard good things about all of the Gods+Leffen! DizzKidBoogie sounds really nice too, in contrast to what you'd think from Twitch chat and tourney crowds ;). Other notable people are Mr. R, Dabuz, Samsora, Amsah, aMSa, SFAT, PPU, KirbyKaze, Shroomed and many many more.
My final draw from all this is that Axe qualifies for sainthood and the rest are pretty normal dudes.

2GG and the Smash Circuit - Thoughts and Concerns
Posted: 23 Dec 2016 12:29 PM PST
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a Smash 4 Championship Circuit. The sheer existence of a circuit legitimizes the Smash 4 competitive scene and gives us a level of professionalism and competition that is unprecedented in the history of the entire Smash Bros. series. Shoutouts to @champtang and @2GGaming for their work - they've really done an excellent job on pushing our scene to the next level of "eSports" and ensuring that we, as an eSport, are taken seriously. They've made huge efforts to grow our scene and put our scene's top talent on display for the world to see. Their efforts should not go unrecognized - we would not be where we are, as a scene, without their efforts to push us to the next level.
That does, however, bring me to my next point.
With the existence of monthly Sagas (all of which mean something now, as winning a Saga means you qualify for the Championship), I am concerned that smaller and more-grassroots scenes will take a hit and struggle to grow as a result. The majority of top-level players (think PGR or even somewhat notable) will most likely attend every Saga they can (especially if they haven't won one previously), as attending every Saga will give them the biggest chance of qualifying for the Championship. Additionally, most players typically can't fund travel to multiple tournaments in the same month. If the only entry point to this prestigious circuit lies in SoCal, other regions' larger tournaments will undeniably take a hit when it comes to attracting talent. I don't think that kind of geographic centralization is healthy for the Smash 4 scene.
If these assumptions are correct, then this will make it very hard for scenes to grow as the probability of gathering top-level Smash 4 talent in one place will be, as a result of the Sagas, extremely low. Unless you're running a supermajor with an ample pot bonus or a considerable history (Genesis, EVO, TBH), it's going to be very, very hard to gather top talent in one place. They'll go to the tournaments that will benefit them the most (the Sagas), and grassroots tournaments will struggle to drum up interest and grow their scenes as a result. As an aspiring TO, that's discouraging.
This theory, that tournaments without ample top talent do not get attention from the community, was confirmed by Don't Park on the Grass a few weeks ago. Despite being a hype tournament with MVD, ESAM, and DKWill coming out, there was so little interest in the Smash 4 side of Don't Park on the Grass that, despite a high level of play, we struggled to break 200 viewers for Top 8 (including Grand Finals). Though we may have been competing directly with ZeRo Saga for viewership, this low viewership number falls in line with many other events that, despite a few globally-relevant players, a pot bonus, and high-levels of gameplay, struggled to attain relevance within the scene.
See the problem?
Without a significant amount of top-level talent in attendance, people aren't enticed to tune into grassroots tournaments showcasing unknown regions. And, with the circuit now being everyone's primary focus, top-level talent to said tournaments will be even less likely. This is discouraging to not only grassroots tournaments, but unknown scenes as well.
While I respect Champ a great deal, and am excited to see the talent that the Circuit draws out of people, I would much rather see the Circuit partnering with tournaments around the nation and world, rather than have all the Circuit tournaments in California. This would give grassroots tournaments and unknown scenes a chance to shine against the world's best players, while still having the hype that 2GG and the Circuit will be known for. Instead, under the current format, grassroots tournaments will be forced to create ludicrous pot bonuses and the like in order to entice these players - something that we cannot reasonably expect them to do due to their grassroots nature.
I am happy for the eSport of Smash. Champ and 2GG have both done a great job in advancing it and pushing it to the next level.
I am concerned about the future of Smash in smaller regions. Many regions deserve the chance to shine and deserve to have their tournaments and scenes highlighted by the community. Without the attendance of top-level talent, I don't believe that can happen. And I don't believe that top-level attendance at these events will happen all that often now that we have the circuit.
I'd love to talk with Champ and 2GG about ways to roll this out that don't stifle regional growth elsewhere. Perhaps other designated events could award half points or build toward bringing out-of-region players in for a travel-oriented saga at the end of the season. These are just some ideas to get the conversation started--I'd love to hear some of yours!
Thanks for reading.

Jigglypuff's competitive meta is stale. That's why I've decided to push the casual meta even further.
