Vyrthur, the vampire snow elf hiding out in the forgotten vale, is a villain because he is a vampire and very unhappy about that. Being a templar of Auriel, sure his outrage makes sense, but he then enacts a convoluted and pointless revenge plan.
First, vampirism is curable. This isn't even just a game mechanic since Serana can be cured. He waited for what he claims to be centuries (which does imply that the snow elves survived there until at least the late 2nd era) without ever realizing all he needed was a soul gem.
Second, how is modifying an elder scroll and waiting for hundreds of years a viable plan for getting a daughter of coldharbour? There has to be a better way to find one, and beyond that what if they didn't send Serana to get the bow? Harkon has lots of people he can send, and he knew he had to keep Serana safe for the prophecy. Even stranger is that the dawnguard could also get the prophecy, so how could Vyrther expect a daughter of coldharbour to come if just anyone with access to an elder scroll could find the prophecy?
Really I feel like Vyrther really ruined the dawnguard story
