Who will get the biggest popularity boost from Ultimate?

Posted: 04 Sep 2018 11:58 AM PDT

One of the great thing about Super Smash Bros is it brings wider awareness to more obscure characters, leading to their franchises getting more attention from Nintendo. Each game so far has ahd at least one character who increased in relevancy simply because they were included.

Examples:

Super Smash Bros 64: I would argue Samus, actually. It may seem odd looking back, but at the time Samus was comparatively obscure. Metroid had been on a ten year hiatus, and no Metroid game was ever released on the N64. Now Metorid is viewed as a core franchise, with a new release on almost every console. Samus in included alongside Mario and Link in most depictions of classic Nintendo protagonists. Also, Samus' recent games have taken inspiration form the Smash games, notably the increasing focus on melee combat for Samsus and Ridley's claw drag from Brawl becoming his signature move.

Melee: The Fire Emblem series as a whole got a boost from Marth and Roy being included, at least overseas. Most of us hadn't heard of Fire Emblem outside of Melee's context, but because those two were such popular fighters the demand for international releases of the games increased, making Fire Emblem a global phenomenon.

Brawl: Pit is the easy choice here. His inclusion was completely out of left field and lead to the most obvious Smash-induced popularity boost. The franchise got its third game ever, with heavy inspiration from the Brawl design( a major character, Dark Pit, was based off of a pallette swap in Brawl.) This led to a symbiotic relationship, as the next installment updated Pit heavily to reflect the changes made in Uprising. Interestingly, Kid Icarus appears to be the only Nintendo franchise to explicitly reference its character's appearance in Smash Bros, e,g, Pit at one point shows he knows what a Metroid is. Sm4sh also develops the plot from Uprising by showing Dark Pit has become an agent of Viridi. Pit also seems to remember the events of the Subspace Emissary, even though his design and personality were slightly different in Brawl.

Sm4sh: Although Shulk himself has not made any major appearances outside his original games, the Xenoblade franchise seems to be getting a boost from his inclusion in Smash Bros. The first game was a critical darling but came at the end of a console generation and was a store exclusive in America, meaning a lot of people weren't aware of it. Now it is being positioned as one of Nintedo's flagship franchises.

So who's going to benefit from their inclusion in Ultimate? It can be hard to tell because all of the newcomers have been heavily requested fan favorites. One could argue that Metroid's bigger representation is tied to Nintendo's decision to bring the franchise out of hiatus, and that without al the obnoxious Ridly requests in America Samus Returns and Metroid Prime 4 might not have been planned. However, I think King K. Rool's inclusion cements his role as Donkey Kong's big villain, and I expect him to show up in all future Donkey Kong installments, as well as possibly showing up in stuff like Mario Kart and the Mario sport games alongside other Dk characters.

HIGH PERCENT presents: LAST STOCK! An online, free-to-enter Arcadian event. First place gets a 100% FREE TRIP to Genesis 6!

Posted: 04 Sep 2018 08:18 AM PDT

Hey hey!

This is Coney. Over the past few months, dmbrandon and I have put together a brand new Smash podcast called High Percent. Our goal with this podcast was to put out high-quality content to a community that desperately needs it. For Ultimate, we're starting off with a bang with an event we're calling Last Stock.

What is Last Stock?

Last Stock is an online, free-to-enter Arcadian we're holding December 15-16, one week after Ultimate comes out.

What are the prizes?

First place is an all-expense paid trip to Genesis 6--this includes flight, hotel, food, miscellaneous transportation costs, even a stipend. We're sponsoring this player for all of Genesis 6.

Second place? Nothing. Come to win.

Should the winning player be unable to accept the prize, it will move to the runner-up. Should the runner-up not be able to accept the prize, the two tying players at 3rd place will face off in a first-to-10 set on stream at a discussed date. If neither 3rd place player can accept the prize, the prize will be forfeit to the competitors.

Why hold this event?

Our goal for Last Stock is to provide a tremendous opportunity to a player who otherwise might not ever get one. This is why we're running an Arcadian format, and prohibiting registration from anyone who has ever held a sponsor. We know that online play has bred some of the best Smashers on the planet right now, and we want to give that chance to a player who might not otherwise ever have it.

Who can enter?

"Last Stock" will be prohibited to any player that has been listed on:

  • Panda Global Rankings: V3, V4, or V5

-or-

  • Melee it on Me (SSBMRank) Rankings: 2016, 2017, or 2018 Summer

-or-

  • Has held a professional sponsorship (Organization that provided flights or accommodations to attend events as a professional gamer) in the last three years

  • Because of legal restrictions, this tournament's prize can only be allotted to a player located in the continental United States. Players from outside the continental United States are not allowed to compete. This isn't something we wanted, but had to accept for legal reasons.

  • Players under the age of 18 years old at time of tournament must have a guardian or parent's permission to enter.

  • Players using any attempt to enter under a different or false tag will be banned from future events, and will be liable for all costs involved with transportation and entry to Genesis 6.

What are the rules?

Because of the expected huge turnout of this event, we're doing something a little different. Here's a quick rundown:

  • 3 stock, 8 minute, best of 3
  • 3v3 FORMAT (One player, three characters)
  • SINGLE ELIMINATION
  • 20+ Stage list, striking down to 2

There are a lot of details, so for more information, check the event at smash.gg/ls.

Where can I register?

Registration is open right now at smash.gg/ls. Since the event is free, we're encouraging people to enter even if they're 100% sure on being able to make the tournament. We'll have a double check-in process to keep things running smoothly, so people who sign up but don't attend don't hold up the rest of the event.

Wait, you mentioned a podcast?

Hey, you remembered! Yeah! dmbrandon and I host High Percent, a weekly Smash podcast where we go over community issues, expectations for Ultimate, and a ton of other stuff. So far we've already had the likes of ZeRo and Bear on the show, with many more to come. Here are links to our latest episode!

What characters do you want added to Smash Ultimate just to have their series music in the game?

Posted: 04 Sep 2018 01:03 PM PDT

I would love to get Joker/Akira from Persona 5 in Smash. I have no hopes of actually seeing him for obvious reasons, but the music in that game is Brawl Meta Knight-tier. Here's the battle theme from Persona 5, Last Surprise.

My friends and I have a complicated prediction game going.

Posted: 04 Sep 2018 10:57 AM PDT

The hype is strong in our group! Rather than just speculating, we made a spreadsheet with our predictions and assigned point values for each slot. Essentially, we ordered 5 guesses for newcomers and 3 guesses for echos and ordered them from most likely to least likely, and we'll see who is the most accurate!

Anyone else doing contests like this? Feel free to use our point system. Just get your guesses in before more are revealed!
