Thursday Teaching Thread - Beginners encouraged to ask questions here! | September 06 - September 12

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 10:00 AM PDT

Welcome to the latest Thursday Teaching Thread, where you the community get to ask your questions and share your knowledge.

This is an opportunity for the more experienced HotS players here to share some of your wisdom with those with less expertise. This thread will be a weekly safehaven for those "noobish" questions you may have been too scared to ask for fear of downvotes, but also can be a great place for in depth discussion if you so wish. So, don't hold back, get your game related questions ready and post away, and hopefully someone can answer them!

If you wish to just view top level comments (ie questions) add ?depth=1 to the end of the page url. If you have any additional questions, /r/nexusnewbies is happy to help.

Upcoming Balance & Design AMA with Heroes Developers - September 19, 2018

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 05:52 PM PDT

Greetings, Heroes!

As mentioned in our recent blog post, we're going to host a Balance & Design AMA right here on /r/heroesofthestorm on Wednesday, September 19! The Heroes devs will join the thread and answer your questions starting around 10:00 a.m. PDT (7:00 p.m. CEST) until 12:00 p.m. PDT (9:00 p.m. CEST).

NOTE: We've moved this AMA back from the original date stated in the linked blog post in order to give players more time to experience the current live content before preparing developer questions.

Developers from the live design, hero design, and productions teams will be on hand to answer your questions.

When posting multiple AMA questions: Please make an effort to post one question per comment. This will make it easier for others to read through the thread, and will help the devs focus on one question at a time. However, please feel free comment as many times as you'd like in order to get your questions posted.

You might also see Blizzard Community Managers posting questions on behalf of players in our non-English speaking communities during the AMA. Feel free to upvote those questions if you'd like to see answers to them.

We will be starting a new thread on the morning of the AMA, so please hold your questions until then.

pepe emotes now banned in HGC chat

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 03:32 AM PDT

FeelsGoodMan, FeelsBadMan, and monkaS are now banned words in HGC chat, and it's only a matter of time until they crack down on PepeHands. This is following Overwatch League's policy of no Pepe emotes in their chat, including Forsen emotes. I wonder if HGC will also force players to delete tweets that contain a Pepe.

"The Overwatch League discourages the use of symbols and imagery which are associated with or used by hate groups, including Pepe the Frog," the rep said. "At Blizzard Arena, it's our policy that fans comply with this policy. We likewise ask the same of Overwatch League teams and players on their social-media accounts."

edit:

the emotes are no longer banned, we did it reddit.

Good luck to our meme brothers in Starcraft and Overwatch chats where the emotes are still banned. I'm afraid these communities are either too complacent or too split on the issue to reverse it like we have done here. Hopefully Blizzard will adopt a consistent policy in their chats and decide to stop banning them altogether instead of banning them in every channel that will let them get away with it.

For as much as people have complained about the reconnect system, I haven’t seen a post yet about the improved version. Pleasantly surprised to instantly reconnect in a game!

EDIT: So apparently there's a radical variation in reconnect experiences. What is happening?!

What Fencing and Competitive Sports taught me about MMR hell and development

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 07:41 AM PDT

When I fenced in university I noticed a pattern of learning a competitive sport:

1) You're brand new, you don't know how to hold a sword (press the right button, you ignore your D and 1 key because moving your hand is bad news). Any match with someone with any amount of experience is a loss. A match against a newby is a coin flip.

2) You understand basic mechanics. You can hold a sword, press the buttons you want. You can beat a newby, someone of your skill is a coin flip but you can sometimes beat someone in step 3. You are unpredictable and random.

3) You develop technique and you learn strategies. This is a weird inflection point. Again equal skill is a coin flip. You can stop absolute beginners but you are losing more to people in level 2. You can't quite figure them out. Objectively you are better. You have better timing, technique and control but they don't act and react correctly to things. This is where you look at the map and know they aren't on boss because it would be suicide, they are down two of their DPS and you have 5 up. Ping boss is taken and marching on your fort. WTF. Sylv is sololaning, ha you got this in the bag, wait she's killing a keep wtf. This is the level when you know how things should be done but you don't know how to work around the unpredictability. At this level you think, hey if I throw away strategy maybe I can beat BETTER players. You try it and get stomped, they punish you, you don't get it.

4) At this stage, you know what you are doing, but mostly you know how to adapt and you understand strategies. It is here that you are truly better, you are improving and rising. You know how to punish a solo lane sylv. You know when to make a sneaky boss call. They don't always work but you understand why they don't and note it. Most importantly you adapt. You see the pattern in the level 2 player's behaviour. You read the enemy and correctly identify the weak link and abuse it. You know your personal meta and start to truly grasp your heroes. Again equal skill is a coin flip (it always will be) but you are getting better. You can be caught off guard and maybe lose games you aught not have. You note it after the game (maybe watch the replay) and make a conscious decision to learn and adapt for the next time.

5) You have mastered the game. You truly understand the match ups and also exactly what you are capable of. Sometimes you might be caught off guard on a risky play, but you knew it was risky and made a judgement call. You immediately (in that game) adjust accordingly. You rise until you hit the point of balance where your opponents are truly at your skill level. Your games are effectively a coin flip but your influence on that is truly affecting the outcome.

Now, you might be asking what's the point of this? Well this sub LOVES to demand that people read guides and pass a test on drafting and meta before playing because they don't want potatoes on their teams. People love to complain how their teammates make bad calls ignore good calls and suck on their hero. This is the behaviour of a level 3 player. This is someone who knows how to play but will never rise.

This is the MMR Hell player. MMR hell is not about matchmaking, it's about knowing how to punish the mistakes of weaker players, and not be punished by better players. This is much easier said than done but practice and self reflection are the only way there.

When is it ok to out a troll without it getting removed for witch hunting?

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 02:30 PM PDT

There is a person that trolls lower ELO games by destroying people with KTZ and then throwing games with other heroes (which is how they maintain such a low rank).

This person has moved beyond trolling games themselves and moved into trolling the community itself. First by trolling this sub asking for help getting out of their league and now they have moved onto trolling content creators to review their games. This is simply abusing the goodwill of people under the guise of asking for help. Some people would actually like coaching and this person is just taking up valuable space and time.

I'd hate to see more people waste their time, so, community / mods can we warn others of this person's behavior?

What is so fun about your favorite hero?

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 04:59 PM PDT

As the title says: tell me who your favorite hero is and why you like to use them. You might even convince me to try using your hero.

Personally, my favorite hero is Malthael. I enjoy clearing lanes and getting camps, plus Malthael can provide good damage to team fights. Even when I am losing, I tend to have fun with Malthael.

Give me your own answers below.

The More You Hearth: McIntyre on Patience

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 09:30 AM PDT

A Big Ol' Quality of Life Patch would preferable to a content patch.

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 07:48 AM PDT

Love the game, love the heroes, love the maps, but there is just a enormous list of issues and bugs I wish Blizzard would focus on. If they delayed a balance patch to bolster the game's infrastructure that would be great. A QOL patch to address the interactions, the bugs, the store, the interfaces, all sorts of other none buff/nerf related stuff, and just make the playing of the game a better experience I would really appreciate it.

Seems there is a bug with Brightwing's polymorph and Mephisto's Consume Souls.

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 09:19 AM PDT

If Consume Souls has been cast and the Brightwing on the Mephisto's team polymorphs an enemy during the cast before his damage actually goes off... It will negate the damage entirely and remove the (I guess) debuff.

Updoots for attention please.

Won 2 in a row last night, got disconnected from draft today. Now I'm in demotion game

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 01:10 PM PDT

1 disconnect should not cost me 2 games worth of wins. I can understand if I was repeatedly dodging but now I have to replay 2 games and hope for the same outcome, and if I lose, I get demoted simply because my internet went out. Is there not a better way to deal with this?

Just ranting but seriously, Hammer+Whitemane in qm is extremely frustrating

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 05:38 PM PDT

I love this game but many a match in QM is just beyond unfun. :(

I play HL too but sometimes I just wanna relax or practice a hero. Yet some games its so one sided neither of those things are possible. :(

Share your frustrations!

How can I beat this KTZ smurf in bronze?

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 01:02 PM PDT

I am in bronze 5, and there is this really good kel thuzad player who is probably smurfing. Some people in my last thread suggest I adapt and get good, so how do I beat this guy? A streamer actually did a VOD review of his game if you want some context on how he plays. Can someone give me advice on what I can do to beat him the next time I get paired against him?

MMR decay will not fix the consequences of that matchmaking bug a few seasons ago, simply because it is not strict enough.

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 09:15 AM PDT

I honestly had high hopes regarding the introduction of rank decay, mainly because I thought that would slowly fix the consequences of that matchmaking bug Blizzard did nothing about in early 2018 (IIRC).

Back when that bug happened, many platinums / low diamonds were placed in masters, could simply stop playing and the reset only affected those who were placed higher than 5 leagues from their previous rank. Low masters was a mess in skill variety, almost every game turned out to be a huge clownfiesta with people who obviously were not able to keep up with the skill level and pace of the game there.

Since then it got a bit better, but often times when I recognize someone playing poorly I can already tell that guy was diamond 5 or plat 1 in the buggy season and simply played 15 games the following seasons to keep his rank. More often than not I was right about it. And I still am.

With introduction of rank decay I thought the problem will fix itself by downranking said players to the rank they originally came from. But what they call "decay system" is ridiculous; if you didn't finish your placements, you won't be affected by decay. And if you do your placements, you can just stop playing for the granted days of inactivity, play one game and get your inactivity days reset.

In my opinion, that is not acceptable.

EDIT: to clarify my point, it's not only about ruining games (read: losing), it is about lowering the ranked play experience for everyone through bad decision making, bad mechanics, sub-par positioning and so on. Those things translate into your winrate very subtle, meaning it affects your winrate in a long-term. Imagine someone having a 40% winrate. That is still every 2nd game won and sometimes a losing streak, for example. So there is more to it than "these guys play 10 games and are out of masters again"; I agree that if they play enough matches (which they don't have to) they will finally fall back, but with said more subtle mistakes, it takes too long and meanwhile everyone they play with has a harder time to enjoy the game.

Can we get a "Play of the Game" instead of MVP? Or both?

It would be much more fun to see a "play of the game", with something cool or skilled.
