There's an in-game explanation for the Horde druids not being there at Teldrassil with Sylvanas (credits to Red Shirt Guy for finding that)

I miss this Horde. The Horde of glory, honor and compassion. This Horde is no more.

Everyone is freaking out about Sylvanas and I'm just over here like...

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:41 AM PDT

Sylvanas is one of the most consistent characters in Warcraft. Community reaction: Bad writing because we didn't get a twist and dont want the horde to be bad!

Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:16 PM PDT

Sylvanas has been evil for so many years now. She is a nihilist who had death camps in Eastern Kingdoms.

She ordered to kill Refugees in castle Fenris and raise them, she ordered to kill farmers in Plaquelands/Hillsbrand, raise them, and kill other farmers with the new, brainwashed undead farmers.

She also used chemical weapons against Gilneas. A kingdom that was just hit by the cataclysm and the Worgen curse.

She wanted to steal the valkyrs from Odyn/enslave them to raise more undead. She calls her form a curse and hated Arthas because he didn't give her a clean death. She was begging him for it. Now she wants to enslave somewhat divine beasts to bring the curse to other innocent people.

Sylvanas wasn't "morally grey" since Warcraft 3. She is straight up evil. And I fail to see how so many people ignore all her crimes.

I mean, even Garrosh said she is not better than the lich king: https://i.imgur.com/dbNENjP.jpg and calls her a bitch right after that. that was 8 years ago.

People were discussing other "outcomes" of the war of the thorns. and how a potential "twist" could have made it better. and that people came up with the idea that Jaina, Genn, or Anduin could have started the fire to have a reason to go into war.

Honestly? that would be what I called "bad writing". The horde already marches against Teldrassil. Why should any alliance member start a fire, killing potential millions of allied civilians (we don't know the scale of wow) to start a war that is already ongoing? and that should be better writing??

Sylvanas is consistent in her actions throughout Warcraft.

She marched against Teldrassil to kill Malfurion, even tho he is one of the greatest heroes Azeroth has ever seen (defeating the original legion invasion, sacrificing the immortality of the night elves, beating Archimonde by sacrificing his ancestors (wisps) and the immortality of their people again, cleansing the emerald dream twice) just because he has the "wrong" faction, she assassinate night elves outpost using poison (also killing civilians) and wants to march into Darnassus.

That she burns the tree is not a tantrum she is having, she makes that decision insistently.

She said before that she wants the alliance to leave Kalimdor. to make the horde strong and impenetrable to a potential alliance invasion.

People were also saying that it's not even strategically to burn Teldrassil. Seriously guys, what the hell are you smoking? To get rid of the alliance of Kalimdor by burning one of the strongest fortresses of the alliance is not a strategic decision?

"but blizzard said Warcraft is all grey". Yeah, does that mean we can't have evil characters anymore? We just got a Sargeras retcon in Legion

The horde itself shouldn't be evil. We have seen that in Pandaria. Yeah sure Garrosh had many followers, but the other races rose and fought against him. And we are currently seeing a similar thing in BFA. Honorable orcs like Varok don't want to follow Sylvanas and refuse to fight with the horde.

the horde is really complex since there are many different races in it with different intentions. And when "the loa" decide to make a mass murdering maniac the new leader of the horde, you can expect the horde to make evil shit.

I don't get why everything needs a "twist" nowadays. why can't characters just be true to themselves?

You don't have to emphasize with Sylvanas to acknowledge that her actions and intentions were true for what she is doing for years now.

Anduin, for example, is a pacifist. For him to start a war and/or kill civilians would be out of character. And other alliance leaders like Velen or Tyrande pledged their alliance to him.

The horde has their honor bound as well and as a member of the horde, you have to stay loyal to your war chief. to say "no, I don't like her, I make my own horde" would be dishonorable. Now that Sylvanas makes more dumb stuff, you will see more and more members of the horde who will not follow her anymore.

"yeah but its lazy writing because its only Garrosh 2.0"

I don't agree with that. It looks like that on the surface, but it's still different. Arthas for example used to be an alliance prince, until he became an enemy of the alliance. Then we killed him off. On the surface, Garrosh is just Arthas 2.0, right? Wrong.

Garrosh wasn't born and raised on Azeroth. He is a Draenor orc. With Draenor traditions. He wanted to build an orcish horde, but he was still following orcish traditions.

He hated the alliance from the beginning. He had a different view on that topic than thrall.

Sylvanas, on the other hand, says for years now that her people are dying and that the Forsaken have no way to reproduce themselves. She wants to secure the future of her race. Yes, she calls the forsaken a race, even tho they are just cursed humans.

She already has no respect for life. She just thinks that the forsaken are save if the alliance is destroyed. She wants to enforce that with everything she got.

Does that make her a morally grey character? hell no it doesn't.

Does it make her actions on Teldrassil reasonable from her point of view? yes, it does.

edit:

To address another point of "your character being on board of what Sylvanas does"

well, when you are in a war, you don't always have time to make a level-headed discussion on whats good and evil. You have a natural bias for your fraction. Obviously.

You are also honor-bound to follow your war chiefs command.

After more than 30 years of war against the alliance and numerous war crimes on both sides, you as a member of the horde don't see it as evil to get rid of the alliance of Kalimdor.

You might have allied with the alliance for the greater good, but that doesn't change the fact that you are in a war with them for so many years. this stuff can't be forgotten in just 2 years.

Pretty sure most horde members dismiss the actions of Sylvanas that day. But what are they gonna do? start a rebellion all of sudden?

A rebellion needs time to grow. People need to talk to each other and make their final decision. I mean, we are talking about treason.

second edit:

I just tried to counter the DAE BAD WRITING circlejerk of this subreddit. The front page is full of comments and posts that called out the last cinematic. Most noticeable the post with almost 11k upvotes and 2 times gold that said the current storyline "doesn't make sense"

A Simpler Time [2007]

Everyone's upset about Sylvanas, meanwhile as a member of the Alliance I'm just sitting here going: "TYRANDE WHISPERWIND DID WHAT?"

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:36 AM PDT

Talk about a blow to the face. You want to complain about Sylvanas' character development? Look at the ferocious Tyrande Whisperwind, legendary for her guerilla warfare in defending the forests of the Night Elves during the Third War.

  • She never appears during the actual defence of Darkshore.
  • She let an orc get away for no reason (Saurfang), despite the fact that he just dishonourably chucked an axe into the back of Malfurion, potentially threatening his life.
  • Once she did show up, it was only to carry Malfurion away to Stormwind to tend to his wounds, meanwhile leaving Darnassus and all of her people to die without any of its leaders present?

She basically continues the whiny storyline from Val'sharah and remains out-of-character. The Tyrande Whisperwind I know would never behave like this. She'd go berserk. She'd call on Elune's might to blast every orc in sight to oblivion. Most of all, she'd run back and die defending Teldrassil.

Holy crap.
