Lets talk about the largest misconception around Sylvannas

Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:17 AM PDT

Reading the posts on here and the forums, it seems that many players believe in Saurfang's whole honor before reason thing. They believe Sylvannas, as war chief, has to embody those virtues for the story to be "good writing". However, I see one massive flaw in this.

The Forsaken have never been the "honorable" faction in the Horde. It's really just the orcs and Tauren that value honor above all else.

From our very first introduction to Sylvannas in Warcraft 3, we see that she is a ruthless and conniving ruler, nowhere near honorable. As soon as she breaks free from Arthas, she lures him into a trap and poisons him, planning on killing him in an ambush. She convinces Garithos to side with her through lies, then kills him. She sides with the dread lords, then makes them kill each other.

She is also the one to call for a retreat on the Broken Shore, abandoning the alliance. If Saurfang was the one to grab Voljin, its reasonable to assume he would never do something as dishonorable as retreat, and would proudly lead the Horde army to their deaths. (EDIT: This is purely my opinion and certainly debatable, given that Vol'jin himself pretty much orders the retreat. No matter his personal beliefs Saurfang would at least follow orders at that point. But, for the sake of argument, if he were warchief would he have ordered the retreat?)

This is best explained in the final exchange between saurfang and Sylvannas. He accuses her of having no honor, and she basically says there's no point in honor if you don't live.

That one line, "The Horde is worth saving" shows exactly how morally grey this storyline is. She will do whatever is necessary to lead the Horde to victory, which is her duty as its leader. And she will do so as she has always done: ruthlessly and maliciously.

That's not to say she's some heroic character; on the contrary, she is quite clearly the villain. But she's not just being evil for the fuck of it. To her, this is the best course of action that will ensure the Horde's superiority.

"We have paid the price for sharing this world. And we have forgotten what makes us strong."

The old way of honorable duels and stalemates has done nothing to further the Horde's interests. Now there's a Forsaken at the helm, and thus the core values of the Horde have radically shifted. Honor before reason has given way to victory at all costs.

Anduin lead the Alliance armies to assault Lordaeron with no plan for when Sylvanas would use the plague.

Consider that for a moment. There's no indication he knows Jaina is about to show up, so he apparently just figured the Undead wouldn't drench the battlefield in the plague. Why is this guy the leader of the Alliance again?
