So I'm on a new world, 17 days in on Rough Randy. I opened the ancient danger right away to see what was inside and then left it behind a locked door until now. It was 2 scythers and 6 caskets

Today I got a "Friendlies" event which I've never gotten before, one of my tribal neighbors sent this army over to help out. At that particular moment I had nothing going on, so I figured it'd be a good time to unlock that ancient danger and let them go to town. They went inside and downed both mechs in a matter of seconds, and then I opened the casket and they dealt with the one unfriendly guy inside

Just as I was scrambling to get all the injured into beds to heal them (I'm gonna get so many friend points with them) I get raided by a pirate faction with 5 guys. Right now I only have 1 pawn that's good at fighting, and 1 other that at least has the ability to fight. My other two are incapable of violence. 5 raiders with guns would have doomed us, so luckily my horde of bow wielding friends was here to save my ass

Edit; Slight update: while I was healing everybody, two of my colonists got the plague (luckily I have a good doctor and one of them was super-immune). So while I was busy dealing with that along with all of the stuff mentioned above, I forgot about the baby scarabs that came out of the caskets and were roaming their way out of the ancient danger. There was one left inside the building and I hunted it, not realizing there were others hanging out all over my yard. When I attacked the first one, all of them went into revenge mode. Thankfully my absolute best friends in this world had their slaver caravan here to, once again, save my ass (although I could've dealt with the lil bugs on my own, I still appreciate the help)

Everything in this post took place over the course of 6-7 game days with little to no peaceful time in the middle

Dealt with a doomsday rocket raider today. This is how I imagine it went down from the colonists' perspective.

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 09:13 AM PST

It was nearly dawn when she first saw them, the dark silhouettes on the western horizon. Swearing under hear breath, Rynyk clutched her charge rifle a little closer to her chest as she struggled to make out the oval-ish shapes through the gentle Decembary snow. Rynyk stopped dead in her tracks, forgetting entirely about the chunk of steel slag she had dutifully agreed to bring back to the smelting stockpile. A single dreaded word flashed into her mind and lingered there like a frozen corpse discarded in the wilderness for the wild animals to gnaw away into nothingness.

Pirates.

"Sappers!", Rynyk shouted as she watched the raiding party make its way towards the newly constructed western wing of the colony.

"SAPPERS!", Rynyk called out again, this time running frantically. Ordinarily, at this hour, no one would have heard her calling as she was the lone colonist on the night shift. But Mie, the tireless animal tamer (and part-time pyromaniac), was nearby taking care of some early morning training with her beloved boars. The other colonists slumbered as electric heaters hummed nearby. They never understood the connection Mie had with those filthy animals they were always cleaning up after, but what was it their concern what Mie was doing with her dozens of smelly boars during the day. It was bad enough that she had to be forcibly stopped from burning the whole place down every few months or so. Frankly, it was just good to have her out of the house instead of lighting everyone's beds on fire.

Rynyk, now sprinting, darted for cover behind the corner of a wall at the southwest end of the colony as the raiding party loomed closer to the sleeping colony. Flinging open the doors of the base, Adam the former space marine (Adam had been dishonorably discharged after failing a urine test for smokeleaf) staggered out, helmet bouncing over his eyes as he inserted a fresh clip into his shoddy assault rifle.

"What's going on?" he asked Rynyk, joining her behind the edge of the wall.

"Sappers. They're skipping the killbox this time and they're heading straight for the west wing."

"But, that's where we've been building the… "

"I know", Rynyk said briskly.

"Well I'll be damned if some flaked-up boomalope herders are going to mess with my plans to get off this god-forsaken rimworld."

Rynyk sized up the attacking force. "I'm seeing frag grenades, a sniper rifle, couple shield belts, a charge rifle… wait, is that a…"

"But Doomsday launchers are banned on the Glitterworlds!" Adam complained.

"Not out here they're not."

North of their position, on the other end of the colony, Mie gathered her animals around her as she hunkered down behind a half-grown elm tree. The only way back inside was through the path of the oncoming barbarians. Two layers of limestone walls ensured that.

Casting another look at the oncoming horde, Mie's heart sank. The disorganized colony could never field a counter-attack fast enough to prevent catastrophic damage. If that doomsday rocket went off inside the colony, it could mean months of building sarcophagi and digging shallow graves. Around her, fifty or so trained boars gathered, nervously sifting through the snow for small tufts of grass.

Mie gently inserted her hand into the pocket of her duster, nervously fiddling with a small whistle as she watched the attackers draw closer. Slowly drawing the whistle from her pocket, she gazed at Speedy, the first boar she had trained, and the only one allowed inside the house.

"What's taking so long. Where is everyone?" Rynyk asked Adam, a shadow of concern passing over her face.

"I have no idea. These go-go juicers are going to be crawling all over our freezer by the time the rest of the colony gets out here!"

"Guess we'll just have to hold them off for now." Rynyk replied, taking a furtive glance at the enemy sniper setting up behind a rocky outcrop.

Rynyk had only finished that sentence when a sudden shrill whistle pierced the cold winter air.

"Mie, what are you doing?!" Adam exclaimed to himself. "She's unleashed them all!"

The attackers froze as fifty bristling wild boars sprang to life.

"HOLD YOUR GROUND" one of the attackers called, drawing his machine pistol, taking aim at the slippery mass of writhing brown fury stampeding towards him.

"Let's go!" Rynyk called as she charged into the opening, drawing into firing position behind a nearby elm.

The thing they never tell you about Doomsday rockets is just how bright they are when they go off. If you've ever seen one go off, you're either dead or you're about to be seeing spots for the next few days.

Rynyk couldn't be sure what happened next. Some speculate that the raider carrying the doomsday rocket got spooked by the boars, others say he just wanted to watch the world burn. Either way, nothing in all her years on this rimworld could have prepared Rynyk for the scene she was about to witness.

Tossed backwards by the fearsome shockwave, Rynyk dusted herself off and peered into the brown cloud of dust, smoke, and evaporated snow that shrouded the battlefield. As the ringing in Rynyk's ears subsided, it was replaced by the sharp screeching of downed boars and the screams of wounded attackers. Raiders covered in chemfuel residue burned brightly as their colleagues hastily retreated. The raider in charge of the doomsday rocket had discharged it directly into the center of his own platoon.

By now, the entire colony had awakened and stood dumbfounded and shivering outside in the early morning snow, gazing at the carnage that lay before them. Chewy the pacifist chef, who had been awakened from his deep slumber by the distant shockwave, grumbled and rose to begin a day of meal preparation. Little did he know it would be meals upon meals of pork medallions he would be making that day.

Rynyk slowly wandered towards the inferno. Lingering boars uninjured by the blast rushed past her to chase down wounded raiders, bringing them to a swift, snarling, and terrifying end.

After a few moments Rynyk noticed a lone figuring moving among the fires. Singed and tattered but unharmed, Mie emerged from the smoke carrying a barely alive Speedy the Boar, who was bleeding profusely and covered in burns. On her head she was wearing a power-helmet she had stripped from a raider just moments before his death. Mie trudged past the speechless Rynyk, clutching her bleeding boar and began to force her way through the fifteen awestruck colonists gathered near the entrance of the colony.

"Mie?", Rynyk called out, considering the possibility of capturing the downed raiders. "Want me to put out these fires?"

Mie replied, "Let them burn."

My Stockpile Looks Like This So Hers Can Look Like This

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 04:43 AM PST

I was bad.

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 11:13 PM PST

So, my colony for the March challenge is still going strong after more than 3 years on the Rim. (I'll probably do another imgur pictorial later.)

However, recently we did a bad thing. Sort of.

We had a mechanoid raid incoming. 2 scythers and 3 pedes. We were still a bit beat up from earlier problems and honestly I wasn't confident we were going to be able to survive, especially against pedes.

Then we get a call from a refugee who wants to join us. They are being chased by some tribals, so I immediately agree. After all mechanoids don't care who they fight.

The plan works... to a point.

First we see the refugee. She's an abrasive pyromaniac with no real skills and is completely non-violent. At this time my 10 person colony already has 2 non-violent people, but one is a fair doctor, the other is an amazing cook.

Still we offered her refuge, so I draft her and direct her towards the nearest door, knowing she'll have to try to run past the pedes who are nearing the entrance to our killbox.

The pedes split up. The inferno cannon one enters the passage before this useless pawn gets close. One with a charge blaster actually gets to about 10 squares of her and opens fire, while the third pede uses its minigun to fire at her pursuers.

The refugee takes hits, but survives and manages to make the turn allowing her to head to the door she was seeking. The two pedes then get into a fight with about half the tribals as the inferno cannon pede emerges into the killbox. (the scythers had already been wiped out in the killbox, but two of my fighters had to head to the hospital after the gun battle.)

Inferno cannon guy sets the sandbags in front of my lead turret ablaze, but goes down before he can do more. Tomoko (my non-violent cook) actually rushes in front of my gun line to put out the fire before the first tribal emerges. (not a good idea, my people are notorious for friendly fire incidents, at least they are to me.)

The tribals outside manage to take down charge blaster pede and are handling mini-gun for the moment, but finally break against my wall of fire in the killbox.

At this point I do something bad. The mini-gun pede is alive, so I have our new refugee go and dance around him, until it headbutts her to the ground. It then happily enters the killbox to die.

The abrasive, pyromaniac, non violent refugee would bleed to death in the snow. In the end her only service was to bring the tribesmen along to help make the fight a ton easier.

((and she's not the first. I have had 3 refugees that sucked. Teddy I kept because I was short people, but he died shortly after arriving [I can't remember why]. Nag was so bad I drafted her and had her stand right near the map edge until the pirates knocked her out and kidnapped just her. And finally this girl, who I allowed to die rather than let her stay in the colony.))

But I did keep one of the tribals who wasn't too bad. She hasn't accepted our recruitment attempts, but, we have time.

Creative use of a heat stroke room?

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 07:45 PM PST

I found that if you put a bunch of heaters or ACs with the heat facing inside a small area, you can get the temperature pretty high and force a heat stroke on a creature...

Any creative ideas for how to use a heat stroke room?

I play randy on hardest difficulty. Are there mods that increase the difficulty fairly?

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:23 PM PST

Whether it be mods to increase enemy intelligence or adds a separate storyteller. I don't want just increased number of enemies so to say but I was hoping for ideas on finding something more fleshed out. Perhaps mods that make it more dangerous for both sides of the coin. Thanks for reading!

Farming lag- am I the only one?

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 09:38 PM PST

I've lately noticed a REALLY annoying form of lag. When a farming pawn harvests a plant and drops it, the game stutters for a second. That doesn't sound that bad, but when you've got a LOT of farming pawns, or a really good one who can work stupid fast, it turns into a mess of stutter effects.

I don't have any mods that have any impact on farming, so I don't know where it's coming from. I've trimmed out several, and still have it. I can't just go mod-by-mod because my modlist is bigger than the one for Skyrim and many require new saves, but.

Has anyone else run into this? Has anyone figured out a solution? Nothing's showing up in the console, and no, no one's in a corner.

Why are all of my dogs alcoholics

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 05:10 PM PST

My colony produces beer for supplemental income which I keep properly restricted for the people but I have to keep all of my dogs on a custom "you're allowed anywhere except the kitchen" animal zone because instead of eating their kibbles and bits they always go straight for the booze, and I don't find out until one of them got doggo cirrhosis as a month-old puppy and another just got a liver carcinoma, both from "alcohol tolerance (massive)."

I don't even know how they're getting the bottles open because they don't have thumbs. This puppy alcoholism is tearing their family apart. Please help /r/RimWorld

Permadeath Chillax rough run on a snowy marsh turned out to be the most depressing experience.

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:26 PM PST

Everything was fine at first. Three people, quite a decent and common Engie pawn being amongst them, in a form of a young black lady this time. I forgot the name of a guy who will later beome her soon-to-be husband, and the last one was Miranda - non-violent midworld enterpreneur, the tragic hero of this story.

Living in a cold swamp kinda sucks, but they managed to build a good electric-powered shelter with a bunch of nice, comfy rooms (most of which were made out of wood, that'll come up later!) and a steady supply of meat from hunting.

First, they tried to save a refugee and Engie got a bad wound that later got infected. Infection killed her and not long after that very saved refugee, in a mental break, killed husky bonded to Engie's bf. Had to banish this ungrateful bitch for her own good. Accumulated stress from losing a friend, lover, a bonded animal on top of it, and somehow having remorse from banishing a colonist brought Engie's fiancee to a berserk state. At that point i only had Miranda and Chris - a raider that joined us after being captured. I had to hide Chris in a farest room from a madman and keep exhausted Miranda out in the marsh for a whole night, up until i finally decided that since nothing keeps Engie's fiancee in this colony anymore, he should just go, and i banished him. Apparently, banishing crazy colonists works fine, they just stop their shenanigans and leave.

For some time, Miranda had to cooperate with Chris, who's abrasive and had annoying voice. Sure, it was a torture on its own, but nothing too serious. Chris was a cool guy, after all, if he keeped his mouth shut. Quite handy, good aim, passion for science. But then, hostile tribals showed up. I ordered Miranda to put some traps at the entrance, but after putting just one she decided to call it a day and thus Chris got overrun and kidnapped. By that time another colonist already joined us, who was also incapable of violence. Miranda and this loser had to hide in a kitchen while tribals were kicking Chris's ass and breaking stuff around the base.

At this point i realized that i am stuck with two non-violent pawns that can't hunt, in a territory without much stored food, a mere 10 days growing period, in a middle of winter and another husky to feed. Following days mostly consisted of stealing whatever local predators cathed, which was mostly the work for a dude.

Naturally, wooden house cathed fire from Zzt... event, so this sore loser, being a shmuck who's not only incapable of violence, but also of firefighting, was sitting there on the snow waiting for Miranda to show up and put out the flames. She got her eye badly burned doing that and after giving up they had to sleep in the only enclosed room in the base that could provide security from wildlife for a night. Freezer. Thanks to this reddit for the advice of building freezers from stone. That helped in an unexpected manner. After that night they became lovers, and a day later the guy got mauled to death by a fox.

So, non-violent Miranda and her husky then managed to pull through the rest of the toughest winter. Stealing fresh food from predators right out of their noses, then putting it through nutrient paste dispenser and feeding herself and husky. Spending days in her shack, sewing hats from whatever textile she could get in hopes of selling them and getting enough silver to buy a slave that can hold a gun. She dealt with ocassional mad animals and lone raiders by putting traps in their way and letting her trusty husky do the rest.

That one time she almost passed out from malnutrition, waiting for injured manhunter moose to bleed out right in her room. She constructed some traps from her own furniture (because leaving the room was a death sentence), put them under the door, called her husky and opened the door for the mad moose. That way a mad animal got injured enough to pass out.

So, she pulled through. Lived long enough for a growing period, started to plant some rice and potatoes, things got better.

And then a grizzly bear showed up and mauled her to death. That very bear that she was stealing food from.

New player here. What is this "Add name of player-created characters"?

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 05:05 PM PST

Here in the options it allows me to add names? I thought that you could also rename the colonists that you could make and this option seems redundant. Is this more for a randomly generated colonist to select from a name bank?

Players who keep weapons and armor in rack: How do you manage that?

Posted: 04 Mar 2018 01:23 AM PST

I always just have my pawns holding weapons and wearing armor. But there are so many people that keep their weapons and armor on.. racks? I forget what its called.

So if you do this, how do you manage to re-equip everybody if there is an attack? If you have 10+ pawns, its seems really tedious to click on everybody and have them equip. Is there a quick command or a mod people are using to swap out a preset equip list?

Thanks

Fuck you tornado

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 03:53 AM PST

So I'm playing a rich explorer solo, and since she's sanguine I decided to de-organ and butcher a dude all in one go. Worked out fine, the mood debuffs are within tolerable limits, still a bit annoying though.

So the week or so passes and it's mere hours before those debuffs are about to expire, all good...

Then a tornado shows up. Proceeds to immediately plow straight through ALL THREE of the harvested organs, along with my entire medicine crop and some other shit that's just annoying to replace.

Many middle fingers were sent Randy-ward

Rimworld, I love you, but how the fuck are you supposed to protect yourself from THAT? Do I just have to build exclusively under mountains for all time?
