/r/Rainbow6 Discussion Series - Map Reworks: Hereford Base | Aug 5th, 2018

Overview

Welcome to the /r/Rainbow6 Discussion Series: Map Reworks! This series has been created to facilitate the discussion on how to rework, change, and balance existing maps.

The goal of this series is to take on one map at a time and discuss what works, what doesn't work, and how to improve the map.

Hereford Base: An Introduction

Hereford Base is one of the original maps that shipped with Siege's launch. It has been a core map during the early development stages of Siege and also a core map of early competitive play as it was part of the Pro League map pool during parts of Year 1 although it was later swapped out in favor of other maps. Hereford has been excluded from the Ranked map pool since the introduction of Operation Blood Orchid on September 5th, 2017.

During the Six Invitational in February of this year, Ubisoft announced that they will be reworking the map from the ground up.

About: Map Buffs vs Map Reworks

There is a fundamental difference between map buffs and map reworks. While we have seen a Clubhouse map buff at the beginning of the current season, the Hereford Base rework will bring major changes as it is redesigned completely while still retaining the essence of the map.

Here is a quick comparison between map buffs and map reworks:

Map Buff Map Rework
Balancing Alternate version
Adding a 4th viable objective New level design
Correcting layout flaws New art direction

The goal of a map buff is rebalancing an existing map by making surgical changes and maintaining the same mood and location.

The goal of a map rework is creating a new map that's more competitive but still clearly based on the original.

Talking Points

These are some possible talking points the community might want to converse about, but feel free to branch out to other topics.

  • Balance of attacking vs defending side
  • Viability of different objectives across game modes
  • Viability of roaming vs anchoring
  • Must-pick Operators
  • What do you like about the existing map? What does not need to be changed?

Honoring Teammates; Trying a Carrot instead of just Sticks

Posted: 05 Aug 2018 06:57 AM PDT

Ubi, you keep trying to take care of toxicity and poor community behavior by breaking out larger sticks to beat people with. How about instead of just sticks, you maybe try a carrot or two instead?

Even if at this point it feels like copying OW/League well...there is nothing new under the Sun, as they say. And it actually works (a bit) in those games to boot.

How would it work?

Simple; after every match you're given 3 Honors to give to members of your team. You can award them for;

  • Good Sportsmanship/Pleasant to Play With
  • Good Teamwork
  • Good Leadership/Communication

  • You also receive a little Honor for simply finishing a match, Ranked or Casual

Players will receive a notification after they return to the Main Menu (Ranked and Casual) or start searching for the next match (Casual) if they received anything from the last match. After reaching a certain number percentage of Honors (compared to games played/reports) players will seen a new wreath/symbol around their Operator Level, with a different color indicating what you've received as your highest % of Honors. The Wreath/Symbol around your Op. Level changes and gets more impressive the more Honors you receive and the longer you go without getting punished for something (IE: Leaving Ranked games, bad language, boosting etc.). Other players can see this Wreath/Symbol when they look at your player profile (in-game or online).

At the end of every Season every player who finishes with enough Honor to have a Wreath/Symbol gets a Charm and an Alpha Pack. The higher Honor level you receive determines the Charm you receive (Bronze thru Diamond).

It comes with some caveats though;

  • You can't Honor people in your own Party more than once per week
  • You obviously can't Honor yourself
  • You can only Honor someone once per 24 hour period
  • Receiving a negative action on your Account reduces your Honor Level (IE: Comms ban, Leaver Penalty, Teamkiller Penalty etc.)
  • Receiving multiple negative actions on your Account can and will completely remove your Honor and Honor rewards

Something to actually encourage people to not be jackasses other than a punishment would likely go a long way to helping clean up the community, and reward those who do their best to no make the community a worse place.

And let me just get this response out of the way;

"Fake nice" is still better than genuine assholes.
