One of the things I loved about Brawl, and to some degree, Smash 4.

Snake and Cloud vs. Ryu and Bayonetta

We had to thank Sakurai for making all of this come true.

Paper Mario SSBU Moveset

Posted: 24 Jul 2018 12:50 PM PDT

Paper Mario SSBU Moveset

https://i.redd.it/ez9huk5ndyb11.png

Hello! I've decided to make a possible moveset for our favorite thin plumber, Paper Mario! I have read a bunch of movesets online, but most of them do not fully encapsulate all of the character's adventures. Therefore, I imposed a challenge to create a moveset with a pretty equal amount of content from all of Paper Mario's game library (yes even the not-so-great ones). This was done to portray IMO a more realistic representation of Paper Mario if he were to be in SSBU. Commenting is encouraged, as I am just one dude making this, so discussion is needed to perfect the moveset of our favorite hammer-thwacking good-doer!

Neutral Special: Bomb Toss

Paper Mario would place down either Bombette, Admiral Bobbery, or Boomer. The order is similar to Peach's forward smash, put on rotation. The bombs would have slightly different properties, but behave practically the same. The bomb would be placed down and would walk forward slowly (Boomer would have to roll). Pressing B again will detonate the bomb, or it will detonate after a certain time.

Side Special: Shell Toss

Similar to the Bomb Toss, Paper Mario would kick either Kooper, Koops, or a Cardboard Shell. Again, the order is similar to Peach's forward smash, put on rotation. The shells would have slightly different properties, but behave practically the same. The shell would be tossed out to a distance, and then come back to Paper Mario. Like in the source material, the shells will still go straight forward in the air, and come back to Paper Mario.

Up Special: Parakarry

Parakarry would lift Paper Mario a great distance vertically, with slight horizontal adjustment, a la Duck Hunt. (Side idea: When using Parakarry, you can press B again to turn into a paper airplane to achieve great horizontal distance. This would control like gliding in Brawl but nerfed.)

Down Special: Vivian

Vivian would use her Veil ability, and bring Paper Mario into the ground for a moment before coming back up. The is a defensive option, as it can break combos, and avoid incoming attacks. When used in the air, Vivian will send Paper Mario straight down towards the stage covered in a veil. Think of it as a second directional air dodge, but only straight down.

Regular Attacks:

Jab - Two punches and a hammer swing

Dash attack - The dash attack from Paper Mario

Bonus - If Paper Mario dashes for long enough, he will use Carrie

Forward Tilt - Strange tilt, use Flurrie to create windbox in front of Paper Mario, a spacing tool

Up Tilt - An upward punch (pose from Stylish success)

Down Tilt - Pull a sticker off of the ground, trips opponents

Smash Attacks

Forward Smash - Use Watt to create an electric blast in front of Paper Mario

Up Smash - Uses a Spike Helmet and hops up to damage foes

Down Smash - A downward hammer strike that creates a shockwave underneath him. Think of a mix between the Quake Hammer and the Excellent Hammer in Sticker Star/Color Splash. If charged fully, will make anyone damaged covered in paint, which will slow down the opponents.

Aerials:

Unique ability - Paper Mario's footstools will actually do damage, due to the damaging jumps Paper Mario is known for

Neutral Air - Use Barry to make a spiky barrier around Paper Mario for a moment

Forward Air - A forward swipe using three types of hammers, Burnhammer, Chillhammer, and Baahammer. The three will be in rotation, similar to Peach's forward smash. They will all use the same animation, but have slightly different properties. The Burnhammer has a fire effect, the Chillhammer has an ice effect, and the Baahammer will spike (by putting them to bed).

Back Air - Uses a Leaf to smack opponent, with an added winbox that blows opponents away, and Paper Mario forward

Up Air - Stab a super-sized thumbtack upwards (reliable Kill move)

Down Air - Use Thudley for a ground-pound style smackdown

Grab/Throws:

Grab - Use Thoreau to grab enemies, very disjointed

Pummel - Either Goombario or Goombella will come and head bonk the grabbed opponent

Forward Throw - Standard Thoreau throw from Super Paper Mario

Back Throw - And "over the shoulder" throw with Thoreau

Up Throw - Use Thoreau to throw the opponent upwards, then gets squirted by Sushie further, think Mewtwo's back throw but upwards

Down Throw - Use Thoreau to throw the opponent into the ground, A Shy guy would slurp the opponent for a moment, then hit them out, good combo potential.

Final Smash: The Fan

Paper Mario will swing a super-sized baseball bat, and whomever he hits will undergo a cut scene in which the fan will unleash its wrath, blowing them away in a glorious fashion.

There you go! If you have any ideas, feel free to comment below!!

Now that team victory screens have coordination, we should get specific poses for specific teams.

Posted: 24 Jul 2018 03:11 PM PDT

I mean, having the Mario bros. react in an unique way if they win as a team, or Samus and Ridley being shown as being uncomfortable at having won that way, would be one of those details that makes the game feel way better.

And, after all, we had specific quotes back in Brawl when the Starfox characters beat each other, so this wouldn't be without precedent...

If you plan to play SmashU online please consider a Wired Ethernet/LAN adapter for your Switch.

Posted: 24 Jul 2018 11:06 AM PDT

While the Switch makes it really easy to connect to your home WiFi and play games online, WiFi does not provide the most reliable nor consistent connection and can commonly lead to "nuisance lag" that could otherwise be avoidable for $30 max.

You and your opponent will have a much better time if you have a hard-wired connection. It could boost your up/down speeds dramatically compared to WiFi (depending on your network setup & ISP).

Here is the HORI adapter officially licensed by Nintendo.

You may be able to find cheaper alternatives if you accept the risk that they may not work for your Switch.

This has been a public service announcement. Thank you for your consideration of this topic.

I apologize in advance if this is redundant or has already been posted.

----- ----- ----- ----- -----

EDIT: Please excuse my overbearing & demanding vocabulary.

Sarcasm and flair is lost in the web. .

You do not have to get the adapter if you do not want to, nor if you are unable to.

I will still love you and appreciate you in the ways that I can -- and I will still psychologically internalize you're existence as that of Smash homies.

The most ambitious Smash 4 Tier List Ever! PGR Results Based Tier List! (+50 hours of work, +100 tournaments surveyed) Part 1/5: Bottom Tier

Posted: 24 Jul 2018 02:36 PM PDT

Hey Everyone! If you don't know who I am, I made this behemoth tier list post a month ago

And this is the update for the end of PGR v5. Now things will be a little bit different then last time, as this is a very ambitious upgrade to the project. The ranking of characters was done much more thoroughly as the data for v5 was completed and I had a full list of available stats. All characters in Smash 4 are ranked in order based on their results in PGR v3, v4, and v5 combined, including the Miis.

Instead of giving you a tier list to look at, this will be the first of five posts where I provide a miniature data compilation and write up for every character in the game. Not everyone wants to look at data, so there is the option to read about how your favorite (or least favorite) characters have done in the last 3 seasons. For this tier list Marth/Lucina and Pit/Dark Pit are combined as one character, so this comes out to 56 compilations in total! The full data list and spreadsheet will be released with the final post.

POSTS 2-5 WILL BE RELEASED ON THE SAME DAYS AS PGR RANKINGS! EXPECT A COUPLE HOURS AFTERWARDS!

But before we begin, here is an example compilation to help interpret the data.

EXAMPLE:

Rank XXX: Character Name

Meta Score: X (X%) *% Of the total Meta Score of all characters combined

Pro Score: X (X%) *% of the Total Pro Score of all characters combined

Most Notable Recent Placing: (Self Explanatory)

Notable PGR Victory: (VOD showing a character highlight)

Trending: (Upward/Stagnant/Downward)

Meta Score: A character placing in a PGR event counts as one point. (C Tier ~ Top 8), (B Tier ~ Top 16), (A Tier ~ Top 32), (S/A+ Tier ~ Top 48). Secondaries used count as half a point1

1.) Secondaries only count if they were used as part of a winning set. Kameme Yoshi and Wadi Rob don't count.

Pro Score: A variation off of Meta Score that focuses only on Top 16 of S and A Tier events. Pro Score is looked at more strictly than Meta Score to rank the higher tier characters.

Trending: An observation of the data to see how a character's results have progressed from PGR v3-v5

Now with all of the technicalities out of the way, I present to you the most ambitious Smash 4 tier list project ever, part 1/5!

Bottom Tier:

In this tier list, the tiers are deliberately divided amongst major differences in results. To give a quick summary of Bottom Tier, these characters have mostly been non existent in the 2017-2018 meta games, and have made almost no impact on the competitive scene. Although the characters even at the bottom are ranked in order, the difference in results is so miniscule it's mostly negligible.

Rank 55 and 56: Mii Brawler and Mii Swordfighter

Meta Score: 0

Pro Score: 0

Most Notable Recent Placing: N/A

Notable PGR Victory: N/A

Trending: Stagnant

Tied for last place, it has been a very rough life for the Miis. Being the least popular characters in the game as well as having their full potential locked from most rulesets, the Miis never had a chance to affect the competitive scene. However, Super Smash Con this year will have custom moveset Miis legal, so its possible these forgotten characters will have one last chance to be a part of Smash 4 history.

Rank 54: Jigglypuff

Meta Score: 0.5 (0.02%)

Pro Score: 0

Most Notable Recent Placing: 2nd Arcane Tournaments 2018 (2ndary)

Notable PGR Victory: Larry Lurr (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9aZM8UceHw) *Non PGR Event

Trending: Rising

One of the strangest secondaries to find success, Captain L's Jigglypuff run this season is the best this character has ever done in Smash 4's history. This might be the peak of her success however, as player's will be more cautious of Sing at the ledge and SH air dodge rest. It is difficult to crack down what specific PGR sets Captain L won this season with Jigglypuff, (his Larry Lurr and BestNess wins were not PGR events), but being a known successfully secondary should at least reward a half point (the lowest possible score in the data after the Miis). This might be all that Jigglypuff accomplishes in Smash 4, but the first step to success is always Zero to One.

Rank 53: Kirby

Meta Score: 1 (0.04%)

Pro Score: 0

Most Notable Recent Placing: 33rd The Big House 7

Notable PGR Victory: Ally (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9Xx0BK5WuQ)

Trending: Stagnant

It Kirby had any dreams of being good in Smash 4, well then those ambitions have dropped like a stone. Kirby holds an outlier win on Ally from a long time ago at Frostbite 2017, however as it will become more evident in the future, upsetting a top level Mario player isn't an uncommon feat. The reason why this is considered an outlier win, and as it will apply to all outlier wins I describe moving forward, is that after this huge upset the character did not carry this run into a recognized placement, and that these dream runs crash and burn by going 0-2 or 1-2 afterwards. Other than that, Kirby got a 33rd placement at an S Tier once by Poyo. There isn't much worth talking about Kirby, he hasn't done anything.

Rank 52: Bowser Jr.

Meta Score: 2 (0.07%)

Pro Score: 0

Most Notable Recent Placing: 25th GOML 2018

Notable PGR Victory: K9sBruce (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DTXGzfIMwc) *non PGR event

Trending: Stagnant

Looks like Bowser Jr. spent too much time clowning around, or maybe it was the lack of buffs that killed his competitive spirit. Bowser Jr. is the first non-mii character to appear here without a PGR win at all, (at least at PGR events). His only scoring is a couple of top 32s at S and A Tiers, and sadly his big wins are at Socal locals. If even one of those strong Socal local placings could translate to a major, it would be a much helpful boon to this prince.

Rank 51: Falco

Meta Score: 0.5 (0.02%)

Pro Score: 0.5 (0.08%)

Most Notable Recent Placing: 7th Midwest Mayhem Saga (2ndary)

Notable PGR Victory: Mistake (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXGpMd-_ruw)

Trending: Stagnant

It's been quite a sad drop for Falco after Brawl. This high flying bird has been grounded for the life of Smash 4. His two notable wins are both wacky upsets, AC's Falco secondary beating 6WX a long time ago at Midwest Mayhem Saga and Keitaro beating Mistake in round robin pools of a C tier event. With an absence of representation, Falco moves into the final hours of Smash 4 with bottom tier results. The only claim he holds above Kirby is that this bird ranks on the pro score.

Rank 50: Dr. Mario

Meta Score: 1.5 (0.05%)

Pro Score: 0

Most Notable Recent Placing: 9th Tokaigi 2018

Notable PGR Victory: Choco (VOD: N/A)

Trending: Upward

The Doctor's case is a bit interesting. His results are non existent in the west, however Japanese random main Rizeasu has found a tiny amount of success with him. Dr. Mario is going above Falco as his notable result was at a more recent event, but make no mistake this is not an outlier win. Even to get to Tokaigi, Rizeasu had to first qualify by placing in top 3 of a stacked qualifier (which itself was a PGR rated event). Impressive. (Also he almost beat Leo with Doc)

Rank 49: Mii Gunner

Meta Score: 2 (0.07%)

Pro Score: 1 (0.16%)

Most Notable Recent Placing: 13th IBP Masters Showdown

Notable PGR Victory: Manny (Bracket: https://smash.gg/tournament/ibp-masters-showdown/events/wii-u-singles/brackets/152086/431927)

Trending: Upward

Mii Gunner's case is weird. She has two notable results, and both of them have been by Socal player AEMehr. Gunner's top 16 at A tier IBP Masters Showdown is one of the strangest bracket runs ever. Mii Gunner was immediately floated to Winners Round 3 as a result of the extremely rare case of a triple DQ. In Winners Round 4 AEMehr defeated Manny 2-0, a very good achievement, but then went 1-2 right afterwards making this seem like an outlier. However due to IBP Masters Showdown being one of the smallest A Tier events ever at 131 entrants and with a ridiculous amount of DQs, going 1-2 after Winners Round 3 was enough to put Mii Gunner in top 16. At least AEMehr was able to follow this up with a C Tier top 8 later on showing the Gunner is capable of replicating results, but still it is very difficult to evaluate the strength of this obscure character.

Rank 48: Ganondorf

Meta Score: 2 (0.07%)

Pro Score: 0

Most Notable Recent Placing: 9th Syndicate 2017

Notable PGR Victory: Ally (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqPg3hU68rI) *non PGR event

Trending: Stagnant

As it turns out, Ganon is sitting okay despite being in bottom tier. He has had multiple mains take PGR sets (Rickles > K9 at Hyrule Saga / Gungnir > Earth at Umebura Japan Major), and although he only has two recognized placings, they are good placings. Gungnir's 17th at A Tier UJM, defeating many strong Japanese players including PGR player Earth, and Adom's 9th at B tier Syndicate 2017. Despite not being the best character, he is most definitely not the worst, and Rickles 49th at S Tier Hyrule Saga was one set win away from being recognized in the data collection. Ganon remains static in this meta game, but thankfully for him, it means he isn't dropping either.

Rank 47: Zelda

Meta Score: 2 (0.07%)

Pro Score: 0

Most Notable Recent Placing: 2nd Sumabato Toikagi 2018

(Bracket: https://challonge.com/STQ2T)

Notable PGR Victory: N/A

Trending: Upward

Remember how I said random main Rizeasu had to make top 3 at a super stacked qualifier to get to Tokaigi? Yeah well he didn't do that with Dr. Mario, he did it with presumably solo Zelda. In an interesting case, he dodged every PGR player in attendance besides Kirihara, to which he lost 2 sets too. However he defeated all the other Japanese powerhouses that had already eliminated players like Shuton and Raito, and he did it with solo Zelda! It's hard to even describe how ridiculously good this run is for a bottom tier character, however the problem here is that this is the only thing on this level Zelda has done. The difference between Zelda and the next character above her is large enough to make a distinction from bottom to low tier. But at least this shows the great parity amongst characters in Smash 4, that even the bottom tiers can do surprising things.

Stay tuned for Part 2: Low Tier

For anyone that still thinks their favorite character is criminally low and I sound like a jerk in how I talk about them, Good! If you are not satisfied with a character's results, there is one more season left to change that.
