Is anyone else bothered by Halo 3's story? Posted: 29 Jul 2018 03:42 PM PDT People are willing to heap a ton of criticism on the newer games, and rightfully so. But for what reason do people think bad writing is some kind of new thing in Halo? For some reason, Halo 3 always escapes this critical eye, despite having a lot of problems with its narrative. Almost none of the events in the game really made sense, and nearly every major story development hinged upon characters being complete idiots. My favorite is how Truth, who in Halo 2 was implied to know exactly what Halo's true purpose was and was just using it to clean up the Elites, apparently became a raving lunatic in the six hours or so between the games. Or how Miranda Keyes decides the best way to use a heavily armed gunship that can carry a dozen infantrymen is to fly it in, alone, and crash it into a floor, getting herself killed for no reason. I know she was impulsive, but I don't recall Halo 2 making her out to be some kind of moron incapable of the most minute degree of tactical planning. But I guess we had to kill this character who had virtually no development, or the story wouldn't have had enough drama points. Also, if "one single flood spore can destroy a species," it's hard to imagine things going so well for humanity if the Gravemind could chuck High Charity, with all its flood dispersal pods, through the portal to the Ark. Land a flood pod in the middle of the South American jungle, and all life in the galaxy is doomed before anyone knows what's happening. But I guess the Gravemind, who was smart enough to convince AIs to side with him over their creators, and destroy the most powerful empire in the galaxy not long after, was just too dumb to consider a plan as complex as that. What really takes the cake is the plan at the end. There's apparently no backup for a mission that has the entire galaxy at stake. I understand having faith in the Chief and the Arbiter, but would it really have been an unjustified risk to have a Phantom or Pelican pick them up or something instead of hoping they can find something to fly themselves from High Charity to Installation 04? There's nothing stopping the rest of the UNSC/Separatists from helping. What always drives me nuts is that Sergeant Johnson takes an entire frigate, with no one else on board, and parks it with the keys in the ignition right in the middle of the Gravemind's last stand. And then he leaves. The flood managed to conquer the most heavily-guarded Covenant city using a single ship just like that one, and you think it's a good idea to just leave one sitting around in an area with no rival ships to contest it? I should note that the ship is conveniently full of unsecured military hardware that has absolutely no use for the mission it was sent to perform. Once Johnson, this beloved character who spent the entire game getting his ass handed to him, gets killed by a light bulb, Cortana remarks "Wait a minute, the frigate! We still have a chance!" As if she had never considered using it for escape. This can only mean that the frigate was just meant to bring Johnson along for the ride, which is... not the most sensible transport for a single man. And that's not even touching the many other issues with the game's writing, like the fact that the Master Chief doesn't say a word to the Arbiter, and only acknowledges his existence twice. The game built up this great convergence, and the relationship is entirely one-sided aside from sticking a gun in the Arbiter's mouth in one cutscene and nodding at him in another. I get that it feels "epic," but beyond that, it's a complete mess in terms of story. [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Jul 2018 06:00 PM PDT So, Chief is obviously the main character of the Halo, he is loved by millions. Now, here's a question I wanna ask you guys. Steve Downes is currently 67 years old, he's starting to get up there in age. Would you prefer Steve to most likely wrap up Chief's story in the next few years, or would you be okay with Chief's story continuing and a brand new voice actor taking up the role of John? I know, it's a tough decision, I actually am unsure of what I would do. [link] [comments]
