| HGC Mid-Season Brawl Prediction Challenge - Playoffs reminder Posted: 15 Jun 2018 01:00 AM PDT This is just a quick reminder that the MSB prediction challenge still exists and will continue for the Playoffs, which start in 24 hours from this post. Prediction challenge websiteRemember that one of the rewards will go to the user who gets the most points for just playoffs - so even if your group stage score was low or you didn't participate at all, it's still worth trying in the playoffs. Detailed rules are available here. Playoffs matches will become visible as soon as they can be described by "winner of A-B vs winner/loser of C-D", to give the maximum amount of time possible to send a reasonable prediction (will always be on the day before the actual match). Lower bracket round 2 will be visible as soon as I find a confirmation of which winner from lower bracket plays which loser from upper bracket (which, worst case scenario, might happen after Saturday matches). You'll be able to change your predictions later, so don't hesitate on sending a prediction just because you don't know who exactly is playing yet. GLHF! [link] [comments] | ||
| Janitor Leoric: An Ad Retrospective and a Betrayal Posted: 15 Jun 2018 12:06 PM PDT First off, for those of you who are somehow unaware, the Janitor King skin still isn't in the game. Seriously. I just checked.
I was inspired by a post by /u/solow89 relinking the most beautiful skin concept I'd ever seen (https://twitter.com/BlizzHeroes/status/749981228263149569) and commentors on that thread suggesting it should be made into an ad. So I did it.
The ad (https://www.reddit.com/comments/8j8276/are_you_a_blizzard_employee_did_you_know_the/) went up on 5/14 and ran until 5/31. Over that time period it received 2,000+ upvotes, generated 300,000+ impressions, and 4,000+ clicks for a total campaign spend of $178.46. eCPM (effective cost per 1,000 impressions) was $0.59, CTR (click through rate) was 1.34% and CPC (cost per click) was $0.04. This was a very effective campaign in terms of both reaching a large audience (CPM) and demonstrated interest in the ad (CPC), both of those numbers are quite low and I made no effort to optimize the campaign once started.
Now what can all that number mumbo jumbo tell us? Reddit Ads lets us break it down by country so let's take a look at which countries are the most interested in Janitor Leoric. The numbers below show what % of the country who saw the ad then clicked on the ad (CTR).
Clearly some regional preferences emerge. Almost the entirety of the Asia server is represented in the top 10 which makes sense considering the skin's origin plus the US and Mexico. How about those who were the least interested?
Wow. Just wow. There is a clear regional divide here where Asia, North America, and the Middle East exhibit a sense of humor and Europe and ANZ do not. Don't @ me. It also has become increasingly clear that the key decision-maker at Blizzard for skins is from Finland.
These regional differences showed almost immediately and if this was a real campaign, it could be optimized by explicitly removing those countries/regions but my overall goal was broad awareness of Janitor Leoric so that it would never die.
Reddit also provides upvotes/downvotes by country though the data seems to populate slowly. Overall, I only have ~1,000 upvotes and ~160 downvotes to look at (out of the 2,000+ upvotes it received). Because of this I only have one interesting data point to share and it's that Canadians are secretly assholes.
The two largest countries in terms of impressions (or times the post was seen) are the United States and Canada. The United States had ~54,000 impressions and Canada had ~27,000. Here are the upvote totals:
Now maybe you're ready to make excuses for the Canadians. Maybe the data hasn't populated yet, you say. Maybe only the upvotes came in so far, you say. Turn away now sweet, innocent child, for Pandora's Box cannot be unopened. Let's look at the downvotes:
In terms of downvotes per total votes, Canada downvoted 40% of the time and the next closest hater, the entire EU, sits at 25%. It's not even close. Sure they still gave Janitor Leoric a net 5 upvotes but the hypocrisy is sickening. If the top comment isn't a real Canadian apologizing and offering to take me out for some Timbits and a Kinder Surprise Egg (heavily supervised of course), I will lose all faith in my home and native land.
TLDR; The ad ran for two weeks, 300,000+ people saw it with 4,000+ clicks, EU and ANZ don't want the skin but Asia and NA do (minus the secret Canadian jerks). Overall I hope everyone enjoyed seeing the ad and happy to answer any questions about the ad or the Canadian Betrayal of 2018. [link] [comments]

| Posted: 15 Jun 2018 05:04 AM PDT I was in a QM game with a Kael'thas and a Murky, and KT's messages to Murky where hilarious. They weren't negative or anything, it just seemed totally in character for how KT would react to being partnered with a murlock. We were down a lvl and a half and KT posted "GET ME XP, FROG!". I've never heard Murky referred to as a frog, it just tickled my sense of humor. Murky played along great. KT would just blurt out short silly demands for him always referring to him as a frog. I'm so used to people just flaming I've thought about just turning off in game chat. It was so nice and refreshing to see someone kind of stay in character and role-play with their hero. Whomever you are random QM Kael'thas, thank you for restoring my faith in QM chat, and to all my QM Murky's out there... "GET US XP, FROGS!" [link] [comments] | ||

| Posted: 15 Jun 2018 09:17 AM PDT I think about this a lot while playing Alex in draft. Her W build is incredible and once you get 25 globes the staying power you give your team by popping off basically unlimited heals that also give mana is ridiculous. Getting to 25 is a struggle. I think especially at my tier people aren't really aware of what quests other teammates have and how it may affect them. It's frustrating to have a regen quest and rotate midlane only to JUST miss a globe someone else picked up. If I could ping "Alexstrasza needs 10 more regen globes for Circle of Life" I think maybe teammates would be more helpful. I've had a few games where people's awareness of that was very high and managed to finish that quest in ~10 minutes and we dominated. [link] [comments] | ||
| When Selecting Random, Retain Hero Loadouts Posted: 15 Jun 2018 07:49 AM PDT When selecting random in QM, you not only get a random hero, but the loadout is all jumbled too. I'd have it pick a random character off my favorites list more often if the loadouts were the ones I set up for that character. Anyone agree? [link] [comments] | ||

| Posted: 15 Jun 2018 03:31 AM PDT So.. There's been quite alot of threads about mastery taunts, mastery skins and such (and here's another one, sorry). Mastery taunts are mostly invisible things that generally aren't displayed or used so much, contrary to how master skins used to be pre-2.0, where if you actually had it you used it. Most of the time atleast. Wouldn't it be an idea that characters did their taunt animations when being locked in when playing draft modes? And accompany this with displaying of their respective mastery taunt levels. Of course there would have to be some other sort of solution for quick match, but I don't know what that would be. It could show the mastery taunt next to or below the portrait in the loading screen. Any thoughts? Is this (relatively) good/bad? Let me hear your thoughts. [link] [comments] | ||
| Reword ETC Pinball Wizard Talent Posted: 15 Jun 2018 07:10 AM PDT ETC's level 7 pinball talent reads as, "Face Melt does 300% more damage to enemies recently affected by Powerslide." Could we actually get a time amount on this? Knowing whether I have 1 or 3 seconds to quickly cast my W would help in position-decision making while getting the pinball wizard bonus. I get the damage bonus even after the 1.25 stun wares off on Power Slide. So "Recently" does not cut it. Thank you. [link] [comments] | ||
| So I've played 35 games as Yrel. Here are my thoughts. Posted: 15 Jun 2018 02:30 AM PDT Intro DISCLAIMER: I do not pretend to be a GM #1 player or whatever. I tend to finish mid-diamond when I play Hero/Team League. I played exclusively QM since the intention was to learn Yrel's mechanics, edge cases, etc. etc. My QM MMR is pretty high though, and does reflect my usual Hero League experience circa draft - i.e. people rarely troll, people try to win and fulfill their role, people get together for teamfights and objectives. It certainly helped that Yrel is a tank/support character who plays nicely with 4 assassins teams. Here are my average stats from hotslogs http://pastexen.com/i/QFssPKu5jR.png Thats my MMR profile from hotslogs http://pastexen.com/i/uRYHVc757l.png Don't get jebaited by 74% winrate. My MMR was heavily tanked when I started playing Yrel (around 2500, while my usual is 2900-3000). Still that WR certainly speaks volumes - I perform with Yrel as good as I do with my preferred heroes. Although I did not play her in srs business master-level Team League, I did play her alot and I feel majority of people on this sub are harboring a lot of misconceptions and wrong ideas about Yrel. Hence this post. Role She is not MVP material. She does not have flashy numbers on her. Her value is CC, zoning and bodyblocking/skillshot soaking. She is very good at those. You can't put numerical value on Yrel driving herself between enemy divers and their supports, making space for your team to tear the divers while they are isolated. You can't put numerical value on Yrel Divine Steeding out of nowhere to drop 1k heal and aoe stun+knockback, saving your otherwise very dead Morales. You can't put numerical value on Yrel dashing to opposing Chromie to soak her Q which would otherwise kill your Time Looped squishy and surviving to tell the tale. Yrel can deal reasonable damage in certain circumstances. It took me a lot of time to get a hang on things, but she seems to be somewhere around Taunt Varian level of damage if you take Holy Wrath on 16, with an upside of being better against clumped people. Kit thoughts I fell in love with this slow, deliberate style, that requires you to predict enemy movements and make strategic calls about committing her D. Her animations are long, correctly weaving them with hard-hitting autoattacks is a difficult skill to master, but the payoff seems to be there. She is extremely versatile, capable of top-notch babysitting, decent chasing and initiating, occasionally even murdering a cocky squishy. All the while sustaining herself and allies and being tough as nails. Top it off with short cooldowns, and we've got ourselves a package. Some people seem to criticize her low damage output, freak out at long chargetimes. I'm going to rebuke some of those and voice critique of my own. Her W does not need to be charged most of the time. It deals full damage in full aoe with a reasonable knockback if you doubletap it. Stun and larger knockback are nice but in practice NOT channeling it is already strong enough. Range on W is huge enough to counter Garrosh flipping you if you time animation correctly. Edit: got that one wrong, damage DOES scale with charge time. It still does low damage on max level - lower than E, but higher than Q - so the overall point of uncharged W offering the basic utility still stands. Her E deals full damage and full slow without channeling as well. You can use it as melee-range aoe slow tool to quickly setup your KTs and Chromies or to peel. 50% slow for one second feels reasonably powerful. Her Q is the only thing that needs to be channeled to provide meaningful value. Uncharged its Aba slap level damage and token healing, useful only to knock Valeera out of stealth. It's a weird ability - even fully charged it deals very low damage. Hitting Heroes with that threatening circle around Yrel should feel good, but it does not :( Unless you use Talents to improve it, it might just as well be a channeled self-heal. Ultimates shove up her survivability, of which she has none in basic abilities. They are both useful. Sacred Ground is obviously good in places like Volskaya and Braxis, but I've had success with it many times on different maps when my primary job was to protect sieging backline from dives or just zone people. Ardent Defender is there for mobile fights when you need to keep up with your divers and/or provide initiates for your team. Overall kit feels synergistic and fun to wield. Incredible design. Builds I've converged towards: Full nanny https://www.heroesfire.com/hots/talent-calculator/yrel#gsDu When your team needs some faces smacked https://www.heroesfire.com/hots/talent-calculator/yrel#guQg You can go for Maraad's Insight on level 1 if you ended up on a solo lane. I don't quite enjoy Yrel on solo lane since Gift of the Naaru is so good when you are not alone. Don't rely on Maraad's Insight to heal you in a teamfight - people kite you all the time, landing autoattacks is hard. Light of Karabor is reliable burst healing right when you need it. Dauntless is good if opposing team has like three or more heavy autoattackers and/or you have strong healer(s) on your side who can keep up with you - like Rehgar, maybe Stukov or Ana. I've come to appreciate simplicity and reliability of Samaara's Light. It makes you sticky and able to land those Holy Wrath / Maraad's autoattacks, which is a HUGE part of Yrel's effectiveness if you went for these talents. I don't like Templar's Verdict, because the whole Light of Karabor + Aldor Peacekeeper thing I prefer leads to me using Divine Purpose for Q. The fact that uncharged Q does nothing and uncharged W is pretty good reinforces it even more. Bubble Hearth is fun and seems underappreciated. Yea, you have to time it to not get it interrupted. It's still a get out of jail free card which opens up certain tactical options otherwise closed to you, like overcommitting to opposing backline and then denying them the kill and shortening your "respawn" timer by some 50 seconds. It's not GulDan's Demonic Circle, but DC would be downright OP on someone like Yrel. Righteous Momentum (level 4) is hilarious. It opens up a distinct way to initiate fights - you charge the hammer and run into enemy backline, preferably from a flank. You move as fast as Rehgar in Wolf form, and this maneuver demands a reaction - usually in form of hard CC flying your way. Most ranged hard CC are skillshots, so you can dodge those and force opposing tank to commit to you, which opens them up for the rest of your team. It's a tricky talent, but might be worthwhile if you know what you are doing. Design flaws As I mentioned already, something needs to be done about Q. Untalented circle feels meaningless. I'd suggest either baking in some of Light of Karabor's healing improvement functionality baseline, and/or allow it to fire while being partially charged if interrupted, and/or improve it's damage on heroes. Gift of Naaru on level 4 feels too core. 66% or 50% of that healing should be made baseline, and talent should improve it to current numbers, imo. Other options are pretty powerful too, though. Velen's Chosen on level 13 is kinda meh. It seems to favor Divine Favor too much. It's very hard to keep the buff up, and it requires a lot of effort to ramp up, but the payoff is not even there - none of Yrel's abilities hit hard, and Q is a wet noodle. I did not test it quite extensively though. Holy Word on level 20 deserves another look IMO. I get the idea that it's supposed to counter opposing AoE combos, but maybe improve it's functionality for a diver-style Yrel a bit? Because that's the one that prefers Ardent Defender in the first place. Conclusions Yrel feels good. I enjoy the design (or I wouldn't be able to stomach 30+ games in two days with her, hah!). She accomodates a couple of neighbouring playstyles in a unique way. I kinda agree that she might need a bit of help damage-wise and I think buffing Q damage is a nice, clean way to help with it. A couple of talents deserve a second look, but most tiers have reasonable choices worth agonizing about. Overall, for a just-released hero she is as close to a bullseye balance-wise as one can wish for. [link] [comments] | ||

| Zagara's winrate seems a bit too high since last round of tweak Posted: 15 Jun 2018 07:31 PM PDT According to hotslogs, she has a 56.2% (58.4% in Diamond+ HL) winrate and a 15.8% (18.8% in Diamond+ HL) popularity. Although 15.8% does not seems high, keep in mind that she is rarely banned cause people don't think she is powerful. Her actual pick rate is actually not low, sitting at No. 10 in ranged assassins/specialists. They may tweak her numbers again in the next patch, just to bring her winrate to a healthy level. | Posted: 15 Jun 2018 05:32 PM PDT Not only was this satisfying because abathur is my first lvl 100 and one of the first hereos i ever played in hots, but i end up with 1k gold this game and this was one of the most fun games i played. | Posted: 15 Jun 2018 06:05 AM PDT I was catching up on the HotS podcast Core (just a fan, not shilling I swear), and they had an email that brought up an interesting theory about Nazeebo. It's episode #128 @ 1:19:07. Link Basically, the idea is: why do Nazeebo's jars have spiders in them when they hit, but are empty when they miss? Shouldn't spiders still pop out no matter what (like Zagara's roaches)? It's kinda like Schrödinger's Cat -
Edit: For a more accurate and comprehensive description please see other sources, perhaps the regular wikipedia entry. So, sorta similarly, Nazeebo (or anyone else) doesn't know which jars have spiders and which don't - this can only be discovered by breaking them. Through coincidence or luck or destiny or whatever, every jar that hits an enemy always has spiders, and every jar that misses was always empty. So if you throw 20 jars in a game, and 15 of them hit, that means Naz had 5 empty jars and 15 full ones at the beginning of the game. That is a fascinating idea to me, and a fun way to explain why the hell Naz would carry empty jars in the first place. Edit: Added citation. [link] [comments]

| Why are people allowed to message/harass others when they have messaging blocked from non-friends? Posted: 15 Jun 2018 02:40 AM PDT A Tyrande I played against today messaged me calling me a coward for not 1v1'ing them, apparently really salty for losing. And when I tried to message them back, they weren't allowing messages from non-friends. Wtf? Why are people allowed to harass others yet hide behind that whisper setting? (What is that called? Oh right, being a coward). Blizzard, please fix this nonsense! If someone blocks messages from non-friends, they should also be blocked from sending messages. [link] [comments] |
