Your Recent FPS Issues SOLVED (hopefully)

You clicked this because sometime between middle of last year and the last month mysterious BDO's frame rates have dropped significantly when you feel like you've done nothing different. Am I right? You thought it was you or a setting in BDO and yet the problem doesn't go away.

You also know that everything including your DPS, your keyed inputs for combos/cancels, and your marketplace sniping is all limited by the frame rate of the game bc that's how games are... which is a direct nerf to everything you do in the game, and you want to fix this desperately. Well rest assured it's not you, this problem if yours is common and is a major incompatibility with Windows + BDO + Nvidia all at the same time. And I have the solution (hopefully) you are looking for.

I had the same issue and I spent hours emailing and calling all three of those parties to piece together the timeline of events and what exactly was going on. My amazing 200 FPS got nerfed to 40 FPS in fullscreen windowed and windowed, and after updating my graphics drivers Fullscreen started capping at 40-60 FPS.

HISTORY (This applies to Windows 10) Skip to "Solutions" for tl;dr version

There are two types of applications we'll talk about: bordered (anything that has a windows border around it with the minimize, the x to close, etc) and borderless (a game on full screen). Desktop Window Manager ("DWM" is something Microsoft has to control the experience of bordered applications to keep them looking nice and running smooth.

During Windows 10 updates they created Game Mode, with a Game Bar overlay (Win + G) and a Game DVR which can stream, take screenshots, etc... They also want to create a user experience that tailors everyone's experience to work well with equipment that doesn't do so hot. So DWM does all of these optimizations to applications to allow just this.

Bordered applications Windows controls the look and feel (and FPS unless you can override with hardware acceleration), but borderless (like a fullscreen game) the combination of what you tell your Nvidia control panel and the game settings should take over. Windows Full Screen, the option in the middle is ideal for streamers and people with multiple monitors because it's a "borderless" application that you don't have to alt+tab to move the mouse to another monitor. It's supposed to behave like a borderless application when coded correctly, however a lot of games treated windowed fullscreen games like they were windowed games in the process.

The major belief is because in Windows 17xx game mode was default enabled which forced VSync on top of all applications despite what the application and graphics card settings told it to do, because... Game Mode. The Game Bar overlay would also often limit applications to 60 FPS so that people could stream gaming to Xbox and other places even with subpar equipment. This caused both NVidia and game developers to update their drivers and coding respectively to work with Windows 17xx, however due to backlash from the gaming communities Windows also fixed this forced VSync issue in a later update a few months ago in Windows 18xx and Game Mode was disabled by default but there were likely registry keys stuck during the updating process or bugs somewhere or both that when Windows disabling Game Mode in 1803 it still thought it was enabled.

So this left a problem for me with BDO where Windows still treated "windowed fullscreen" like it was a "windowed" application, with 1803 (current windows) and with current NVidia drivers.

THE PROBLEMS

The combination of the above created two problems that you are likely facing.

  • 1 - In borderless application "Fullscreen" in BDO, your game is strangely capped at 60 FPS no matter what you do. This is a Windows 10 issue.

  • 2 - In borderless application "Fullscreen Windowed" in BDO your frames are at or well below the refresh rate of your monitor no matter what you do lowering settings in NVidia and in the game. VSync also appears to be on even if it's off in your NVidia control panel.

THE SOLUTIONS

Solution to Problem 1:

  • Disable Game Mode for the game you are playing in the Game Bar settings. With BDO running in Fullscreen press Win+G, go to the settings, and tell it to not use Game Mode for BDO.

  • Windows doesn't easily allow you to disable Game Mode because well... Windows. For extra nuking google how to disable Game Mode, Game DVR, and Game Bar altogether with registry edits (advanced users only)

  • Right click on the game executable file in the game directory "BlackDesert64.exe" > Properties > Compatibility > "Disable Fullscreen Optimizations" and then restart the program. This option doesn't allow Windows to put their dirty little fingers on anything borderless (Fullscreen and Fullscreen windowed)

However note that at this point BDO's "Fullscreen Windowed" was still acting like a windowed application and capping frames for me too, pointing to an incompatibility in BDO's failure to update to the new windows environment, NVidia failing to do this, or some registry keys stuck in the wrong place during updating, or some combination of all of this. Move on to Solution to Problem 2.

Solution to Problem 2:

This gets tricky but I rolled back Windows 10 to 16xx and my NVidia drivers years and stepped up each one at a time to current to isolate stable and unstable combinations. Ultimately this is what I came up with that works:

  • Update Windows to 1803, the latest version, because they have fixed most of these issues and game mode is disabled by default. If you want extra registry nuking power format your hard drive (advanced users) and reinstall this windows version completely fresh

  • Roll back your NVidia drivers until you find one that fixes the issue if necessary. Mine got stable at 388.13. I haven't had time to step up since finding a stable build, but note I used DDU to remove all NVidia drivers as well which you should always do. Never install a driver "over" another driver without wiping the registry clean. Because it's likely my problem was stuck registry keys.

  • Cross your fingers that BDO patches it's integration of a windowed fullscreen application in the 17xx and 18xx environments, and cross your fingers the compatibility with updating to the latest NVidia drivers without whatever bug / registry key was keeping this problem active. But seriously, don't hold your breath for this part.

If all else fails, make sure to disable anything that adds an overlay to the game because an overlay to a fullscreen application can sometimes trigger DWM to force VSync as well, or force Game Mode or other things. For instance Steam and Discord have overlays, so try to disable those and see if that fixes your issues.

And if all else fails even further, get yourself a 120 Hz or 240 Hz monitor if you can't overclock your current monitor and update your graphics card so even if VSync is on, or Game Mode is forcing your game to match monitor refresh rates in borderless applications, at least you can get to your 120 or 240 FPS respectively. This will solve the problem, but this is the costly solution.

Hope this helps and I'm here to help answer questions for anyone who needs to be stepped through any of this. And the mods are more than welcome to sticky to give max exposure and hopefully fix the game for everyone suffering through this

I'm happy they finally decided to incentivise pvp. Game has been feeling dead for a long time but now I'm actually enjoying it again. I just wish they would remove the damn bandit debuff now from the server.

The reason I left BDO

Still processing but after I get my shakatu seals i'm gonna be at least offline for a month.

Thing is, BDO has become a pve experience for me, and it doesn't do PvE very well, at least not after playing it for 2 years, the game is stale, kamasylvia didn't add enough content to keep me entertained at all, and grinding all the same spots for over a year, some even 2 years, is not fun anymore. With the changes to ranger, that made hystria impossible to run, the game is as boring as when awakening for ranger came out:

Don't get me wrong, I love BDO, but I'm not sure how to say it, it's become somewhat boring to grind. They gave me back my bow to grind, even added some cool combos to swap between awakening and bow, that actually do damage, but now it's already gone again.

I'm salty, sure. The class changes were/are horrific for most classes, I feel for all the wizards and witches as well, it's just not right to make ENDGAME content not available for someone with endgame gear, where's the logic in that?

So, i'm gonna play some warcraft again, I've missed legion and I'm actually having a blast, the story is deep and I actually got chills playing the nightelf map, I'm a huge wc3 nightelf player anyway, so :p I'll see you later, I hope they change the game again for the better.

Gifted Kakao cash not working

About 15 minutes ago I bought kakao cash via the steam store and gifted the item to my main account because I didn't have money on it. I accepted the gift on my main and started up the game and the kakao cash isn't there. I've hit the refresh button many times and still no results. help?
