| Cassia Guide: How I Climbed from Gold to Masters in One Season! Posted: 26 May 2018 11:45 AM PDT Cassia Guide: How I went from Gold to Masters in One Season Hey all, my name is Devuu, and I'm a player on NA season. I recently hit Masters in Hero League and wanted to write a guide on Cassia, my favorite hero in HOTS and the hero I played most of my games on during my climb. This guide will be long and detailed. Hopefully, by the end of it, you will find a new appreciation for the lightning slinging, Valkyrie summoning, unkillable damage goddess that is Cassia. If you want a TL;DR, just go to Part VI. Part I: Introduction—Who am I? Okay, you're probably thinking "who the hell is this guy, and why should I listen to him?" I started playing this game last year, right after 2.0 (and Cassia) came out. I immediately fell in love with the character, and even though I stopped playing for a while, knew she had potential. I started in Plat the first season I played, 2017 Season 1, and ended gold. I did not play next until 2018 Season 1, where I placed and ended gold. This season, I placed Gold IV after promos, and have now reached Masters in about 250 games with a 60% global winrate. After I reached my goal of Masters I planned on writing a guide, so that's what I'm doing. Over all I have a roughly 65% global win rate with Cassia over 400ish games. According to HOTSLOGS, I am the highest rated Cassia main on NA servers, in terms of both winrate and MMR. While this isn't a super foolproof calculation, it lends at least a little bit of credibility. My stats this season with Cassia this season in Hero League and Team League, compared to last season. Part II: Why play Cassia—the pros and cons? There are a lot of reasons to play Cassia. Maybe you're nostalgic for the D2 Javazon and like throwing cool lightning bolts at people. Maybe you like to dish out more sustained AoE damage than any other hero in the game. Maybe you like interesting skillshots and stutterstepping. These are just a few of the many reasons you might like Cassia:
Most heroes have well defined weaknesses to pair with their strengths (other than Hanzo/Maeiv/current most hated hero circlejerk). However, Cassia may be exceptional in that she has some of the strongest strengths paired with the most glaring weaknesses, and the balance between these two often depends entirely on how well you as the player play. The biggest downsides to Cassia are:
Part III: When should you pick Cassia? So now that you've seen why you should pick Cassia, you have to determine when to pick her. This is probably the most important part of this guide. If there's one thing I want to get across to people it is that Cassia is not a hero that can be picked successfully into any situation. If you specifically pick Cassia into a teamcomp with vulnerabilities that she does not cover, you can and will lose games. If you pick her against a teamcomp with vulnerabilities she punishes, you will almost assuredly win games. This also applies to maps. Cassia is best maps with big clear teamfights and point holding. Cassia excels on:
Is decent on:
And struggles on:
I am not including Blackheart's Bay, Warhead Junction and Garden of Terror as frankly those maps are awful. Good conditions to pick Cassia:
Bad conditions to pick Cassia:
Fundamentally, I think Cassia is more allied team dependent than enemy team. You might hear a lot that Cassia should only be picked into physical damage or auto attackers. I don't think that's necessarily true. In my experience, teamcomps with a solid solo laner, decent amounts of protection/healing and at least decent waveclear are usually wins. Losses usually come when I pick Cassia at a time that doesn't shore up large compositional weaknesses, or when I can't reliably be kept alive. While the enemy team certainly factors into that, Cassia's powerful trait and synergy with blinds, which make her a natural counter against physical attackers, are not her only strong point. She still has impressive damage output, good catch with Valkyrie and strong self healing. That is all to say this: if you see an opening where you have a powerful healer like Uther or Malfurion and your team lacks sustained damage, or you see that the enemy team has picked Blaze Diablo Kharazim and Thrall altogether on the same team, you probably should pick Cassia. (Just don't pick her into Arthas, or you'll regret it!) Part IV: Cassia's Skills Cassia has reliable, but not flashy or oppressive basic abilities. Most of their power is unlocked in her early talents. As you play her more, you'll begin to develop a feel for what makes her abilities unique. For example, you will learn how to properly angle Lightning Fury to hit targets behind walls or at their healing fountain, or how to maximize positioning to hit all the minions in a wave. You'll learn how to cancel Fend properly to maximize auto attack uptime, or when it is better to channel to finish off a vulnerable target. You will learn how to properly time Blinding Light to catch multiple heroes or minions, and pair it with Surge of Light for insane burst healing that can turn even the scariest outnumbered fights around. You will learn when to let your Ball Lightning spread among a team, or when you stick with it to ensure bounces. These are all fundamental skills that you will quickly develop by playing Cassia, and can be the difference maker between someone who plays her and someone who maximizes her potential as a hero.
Part V: Talent Tree Cassia has two primary talent trees, which depend on your choices at level one. Thunderstroke and Charged Strikes are both great talents, which synergize strongly with most of her other viable talents. Charged Strikes, in particular, is likely the single most powerful level 1 talent in this game, and is the reason Cassia can do upwards of 7,000 damage in the first minute of play during early fights. A bit earlier I said that understanding when to pick Cassia is a huge difference maker in her efficacy as a hero. If that is true, the second most important thing to recognize is how you need to play her to maximize her value over the course of the game. As with a lot of other heroes, there is no "one set" build which is going to be most effective every game. Making meaningful decisions about Cassia's talents, and really thinking about what will be more powerful both with and against certain compositions, is one of the reasons I was able to climb up to Masters. For example, in the past I would go the same build every game. When I started playing again this season, I also began thinking through my choices, talking them over in my head, and making selections based on what worked for the team. Before I rarely talented Valkyrie, thinking it utility was weak compared to the raw damage of Ball Lightning. While that might be true against a heavily melee team, Valkyrie shines against vulnerable backliner who needs to be caught to win teamfights or sieges, such as Junkrat or Guldan. Learning to make concrete choices about talents and when to select them greatly improved my ability to climb. I hope that the explanations of the talents here gives you a clear idea of what is superior in each situation, and allow you best to maximize Cassia's potential. Talents: Level 1:
Level 4:
Level 7:
Level 10:
Level 13:
Level 16:
Level 20:
Part VI: Standard Builds 1. Standard Charged Strikes Build
2. Standard Thunderstroke Build

| I am surprised by the lack of posts about the new Diablo Posted: 26 May 2018 07:51 AM PDT After the first couple of days after the rework went live, the winrate of the reworked Diablo dropped by 10%, now 3-4 days later, it dropped -14.1% and sits at 41% at Diamond+ level. This is the lowest in the winrate board/table, yet I do not see posts saying anything about it? When Maiev and Fenix were released and got high winrates, there were multiple posts immiadetely on the next days complaining about them and how OP they are. Especially in the case of fenix, there were lot of posts of his 60-62% winrate, even on the same day. I understand and approve those posts, I do not condemn them, it is just bizzare to me that people do not seem to give a single fuck when the opposite situation happens. The argument "people still haven't learnt how to play with the new diablo" could also be applied to Maiev and Fenix on their release days. [link] [comments] | ||
| This game's reconnect system is unacceptable Posted: 26 May 2018 02:41 AM PDT The game fatal errored, then when I tried to reconnect for more than 5 minutes it. | Posted: 26 May 2018 08:24 PM PDT Now that we just got reworks, a new hero is next on the list. After the sonya/medivh reworks(3/6), we got a new hero 3 weeks later(fenix). And deckard was 4 weeks after that(4/24). The new season starts on July 10th which is 7 weeks after the diablo/lunara reworks. Means we could have 2 more heroes in the roster by the start of season 3. Who do you think it'll be? [link] [comments] | ||

| Tryhard for Good should return as a yearly event Posted: 26 May 2018 05:45 PM PDT I know that last year's Tryhard for Good was meant to promote Heroes 2.0, but why not have the event return just to promote Heroes in general? I'm not alone in holding in this opinion, because people still talk about how much they enjoyed watching it. Tryhard for Good was such a great event. Watching some of League's big players race up the ladder was a lot of fun, and I think getting their opinion on a game they probably wouldn't have tried otherwise was very interesting. Plus, there's the obvious benefit of getting Heroes in front of a lot of eyes who didn't care enough to seek it out on their own while you're supporting charity. There's literally nothing about Tryhard for Good that isn't great. I know that it probably cost Blizzard a pretty penny by the time donations and the payments to Dyrus, Voyboy, and Scarra were all added up, but come on, Blizzard isn't hurting for cash. Bring it back as something for this month-long break in between HGC league play and MSB or the two-month break after BlizzCon. Open up donations to the audience! I'd donate. I'd watch the shit out of it too. [link] [comments] | ||

| Player since beta and why hardcore players like my friends and I are going by the wayside... Posted: 26 May 2018 06:38 AM PDT What really broke the game was 2017 season 3 and the devs all out focus on 2.0 loot boxes, skins, heroes, et al. I'll end with a tl;dr but just want to rant about my experience and why all my friends stopped playing. The massive boost for people who got lucky and won the majority of placement games in season 3 2017 destroyed HL and rippled across other game modes. I started this game rank 47 pre-season and put in mass amounts of learning, playing and grinding. I have since reached masters the last 5 seasons with 100+ HL games played every season (except last). Roll 2017 season 3; I went from finishing the season diamond 1 to getting placed SILVER 2 after going 2-8 in placements After the THIRD reset. I wrote a ticket with blizzard; nothing. I waited until that Wednesday patch when they were going to manually adjust ranks if they were off by more than 1 tier. NOTHING. I created another ticket, spoke with a GM over the phone. NOTHING. He filed a report as "my account being bugged" but couldn't do anything further and would get back to me. Didn't Matter. My greatest accomplishment, IMO was grinding the F out of that season; 67% W/R, 264 games played, SILVER--->MASTER to prove only to myself I belonged. But alas, I'm done. I am so sick of the games being AWFUL (because of tangent) unless its 5 master+ VS 5 master+ Incoming tangent; *NOTHING has been done to adjust people outside of there element(rank). *NOTHING has been done about Matchmaking's crazy incompetence, just watch the top GM's games/highlights on twitch where 1 GM is with gold/plat. Why should this ever happen? *WHY in the world does personal rank adjustment punish you for a losing streak even after you won 15 straight? Streaks happen to EVERYBODY. But for some reason if you somehow put in a bunch of games and lose a few at any point... -1 MILLION personal adjust points cause you suck!! *WHERE the hell is POSITIVE feedback/reinforcement for good players and/or decisions? Oh yeah, NONE, you are > Reported *WHERE is the report system that stop's people from afk/running it down lane? NONEXISTENT!! *Where is the API for handing over information to the community with helping build game knowledge? NEVER gonna happen. *Zero incentive to keep playing the game after hitting certain ranks. 200g quests ain't gonna do it! TL;DR HOTS has not addressed 2017 season 3 game breaking placements. I was forced to go from DIA 1-->SILVER 2-->Master and IMHO this game continues to ignore problems that even the game lead/creator Dustin Browder mentioned. My friends have dropped like flies and I think I have finally crossed that bridge. Love you all! [link] [comments] | ||

| General game tips from a Platinum scrub. Posted: 26 May 2018 06:39 PM PDT Heya guys, been having a lots of fun lately with the game, more so than usual when I stopped caring too much about what my teammates do and try my best to maximize what I output on every hero. Yeah, I'm not the usual Master or Grandmaster you would usually see make these type of posts, so feel free to ignore it if you want, this is more for myself and just venting in a productive fashion after experiencing the results of too many easily won games lost due to a lack of communication and general game knowledge. 1) Please don't play with VC and Chat off by default if you can help it. If you honestly want to increase your chances of winning, being as social, communicative, and as non toxic as you can will go a far longer way than silently fuming at the lack of communication on your team. 2) Know what you can and CANNOT do. This seems a little general so let me expand: A huge issue in Hots is the lack of knowledge of how to shuffle between passive and aggressive play. There's a ton of factors that go into this, but I can give a few examples: (Stacking Heroes on the enemy team should incite passive play out of you unless you have a talent advantage or there is a long rotation from the enemy team to get to what you're trying to steal, Talent advantages in general, when obtained should immediately be used to convert to structure damage, stolen camps, vision control, etc. Poke comps are generally not built for aggressive play while pick comps can be used to play aggressive as long as you have the initiative, even if you are at even talent tiers. Get used to ceding things when at a talent disadvantage until you can fight on an even talent tier. You're better off trying to catch someone out of rotation, or passively soaking than trying to aggressively stop your merc camp being stolen 14v17 and die anyway.) 3) Please do not get into the mentality of "one mo". Too many times, I've incited my team to invade camps with a talent advantage, take the camp, then they let it get to their heads and try to take more when the enemy team is freshly on even or near even talent tiers. Take what you can get with your talent advantage, forcing the enemy team to either give up Structures/Camps, or take a fight that's not in their favor. When talents are equalized you need to revert back to normal play ASAP. 4) When you are ahead in exp to the race to the next talent tier, You avoid fights like the plague, unless not doing so would result in structural damage loss and sometimes mercs. Sometimes, it's worth giving mercs if you're ahead in exp depending on the type of mercs they are and how they path when they are taken (Dragonshire for example, your mercs path directly behind your gate, you can give these without issue.) There's no hard and fast rule as to when it is worth it or not, it just varies on your playstyle. Inversely when the enemy team is ahead in the race to the next talent tier, you need to be looking to pick a teamfight immediately, or you just make it even harder for your team to win. 5) Get into the mindset of critiquing your play before anyone elses. Yes I understand, if that Diablo didn't shadow charge into the backline, thinking he was old Diablo you might've won the fight, but maybe you shouldn't have attempted to follow up on what is a most likely, unsalvageable teamfight and give the enemy team more kills and kill experience. 6) Understand your win condition and the opponents. There are varying degrees of difficulty to this. It could be as easy as: Muradin/Zagara/Brightwing/Jaina/Blaze vs Alarak/Chromie/Diablo/Sonya/Lucio on Dragonshire. The former's win condition is exploiting the latter's inferior macro game and out-rotating them in the 4/3 man as well as avoiding any unnecessary fights to avoid stacking them, while the later's win condition is forcing fights by threatening the resources (camps/structures) of the former's team as well as utilizing their CC and fast rotations to catch heroes out of rotation. But then you get games like: Arthas/Sylvanas/Valla/Auriel/Blaze vs Stukov/Chromie/D.Va/Garrosh/Tychus on Infernal Shrines. The latter's win condition is obvious, just play for the objective, but what would be the former's? Their Macro isn't particularly more impressive than their opponents, nor is their team fight and certainly not your zone control. The former team is not favored, but the win condition of that comp would be getting to the objective first at all cost. Arthas/Blaze trying to push into Garrosh Throws/Chromie Time Traps and Poke, Stukov's Silence Pool, is a near impossible feat for them to accomplish. The only way this comp could possibly win this game is taking advantage of their Auriel/Valla core, namely that their support never has to tap for mana, and never allow themselves to get pushed out of the objective. Sometimes it's not immediately obvious, and that's fine, you'll learn in time with more match experience. 7) Learning when you can end. 3 dead is generally a good time to go core, 2 dead can be core depending on whether or not you have catapults pushing into the core, 1 dead isn't really feasible. Ending a game as quickly and as cleanly as possible to avoid comebacks is incredibly important. Because, let a game go on long enough, a team wipe on any part of the map WILL end the game. And, that's all I can think of. Feel free to add onto this or voice your disagreements. Again, Platinum player so I'm still trying my best to learn myself so there's bound to be missing or incomplete information. [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 26 May 2018 06:23 PM PDT My wife and I have been playing a bit of Cho'Gall lately for the sake of earning boxes - specifically with her driving. It's been a while since I've gotten anyone to drag me around as Gall and I found myself desperately wishing for two things while I was playing:
1) The ability to place Waypoints with Right Click to suggest where Cho should go or what they should do. A lot of people I know have used Cho'Gall as an introductory tool to HOTS. Usually this means taking the wheel, but sometimes it means handing over the wheel so your newbie can learn movement and positioning for themselves. In the latter case (and in the case of someone lacking Voice Chat or speaking a different language), I feel that the ability for Gall to suggest where they want to go or what they want to attack would be enormously helpful. While it's true that we already have the Ping system, pings have limitations; most notably spam limit and the fact that they're communicated to the whole team rather than just your other half. The ability to place Waypoints would significantly broaden basic communication opportunities for Cho'Gall players without causing undue stress on your teammates.
Other than those two requests, I love where Gall is right now. Cho could probably use a balancing pass (Surging Dash is so nasty!), but the backseat brother doesn't need any other adjustments in my opinion - just some Quality of Life changes to make double trouble a little easier.
