Concept: Maui, God of Islands

Posted: 26 May 2018 04:56 PM PDT

Maui, God of Islands

Pantheon: Polynesian

Type: Warrior

Appearance:

Maui takes the appearance of a Maori Warrior , complete with facial tattoos and top-knot. He wields a large, bone fish hook in the hei matau style. He speaks with a kiwi accent.

Abitilies:

Passive: Warmth of the Sun

When out of combat, Maui's hook absorbs the warmth of the sun. For every 5 seconds out of combat, Maui gains a stack, up to 5 stacks. Successful basic attacks with active Warmth stacks will ignite the target and absorb one stack. Subsequent successful basic attacks will further ignite the enemy and further deplete stacks. Stacks are not absorbed nor enemies ignited while transformed.

1: Transform

Maui may transform himself into one of four birds.

Moa: Maui transforms into a large, flightless bird. In this form, his basic attacks yield greater damage. If an enemy is his with the final attack in the chain, the enemy is rooted.

Damage Increase: 15%

Root Duration: 0.5s

Kiwi: Maui transforms into a flightless kiwi bird. Maui's movement speed is increased, but basic attacks are slow.

Movement Speed Increase: 10%

Kereru: Maui transforms into a flighted Kereru bird. Maui reveals all enemies in a radius around him, even through walls, and he becomes a much smaller target to hit. Maui is unable to basic attack in this form.

Vision Radius: 100

Haast's Eagle: Maui transforms into a Haast's Eagle. In this form, Maui's basic attacks heal him.

Heal Amount: 1% of max health

Note: Unlike Sun Wukong and Erlang Shen, our other two transforming gods, Maui does not dash as he transforms.

Type: Buff

Duration: 4/5/6/7/8s (may cancel early)

Cooldown: 20s

2: Secret of Fire

Maui strikes is hook against the ground in a glancing blow, generating sparks. If the sparks land on a target, the target will ignite. Enemy gods and minions will take burn damage. Allied minions will become fire minions for the duration of their ignition. Burn damage may stack. This ability adds a stack of Warmth of the Sun to Maui's hook for every time the hook strikes the ground.

Type: Arc/fan

Range: 40

Cooldown: 17/16/15/14/13s

Damage per tick: 20/40/60/90/120

3: Restrain the Sun

Maui tosses his fish hook toward an enemy, and reels them in. The enemy is able to move side to side, but is pulled toward Maui as Maui pulls himself toward the enemy using the fishing line. They meet in the middle, and Maui hits the enemy with a critical strike. Maui may also hook his line into natural and player-made walls, and pull himself to them.

Type: Line/Pull

Range: 25/35/45/55/65

Cooldown: 20/19/18/17/16s

Ultimate: Island

Maui digs his hook into the earth and begins to reel in. As he reels, an area around him ascends, bringing himself and any allies or enemies in this area with him for a duration.

Type: Area of Effect

Range: radius of 30 around Maui

Cooldown: 160s

Dev Talk:

With Pele coming out, the next god I'd like to see from Polynesia is Maui. Maui's mythology runs deep among all the polynesians, but especially so with the Maori (of New Zealand) and the Hawaiians. Since Pele is already representing Hawaii specifically, I thought Maui could try to represent another side of Polynesia, so I went with a more Maori flavor for him. I'm aware that I'm writing and designing from an American perspective, so I welcome the input of any Kiwis who have any ideas how I can make this better.

There were a few stories of Maui that I wanted to make sure were alluded to in his kit. First, I wanted to be sure his feat of hauling islands out of the oceans was included. I gave him an ultimate that raises an island, almost as a little platform for him and an opponent to duke it out on. This ultimate can be used to single out a vulnerable opponent, remove a threat from the fight for a while, provide sanctuary for teammates (or Maui himself), or create a barrier for enemies. It's similar to Odin's ring in a lot of respects, with the removal of anti-heal and the prevention of jumps out of the ring. But at the same time, if you're not on the island already, you can't attack it. So Maui's mid-laner Poseidon can't Kraken the island unless he's already on it. And enemy Kukulkan can't dragon spirit you while you're up there. A few abilities that lift an enemy high and transport them to a location (like Athena, Thor, Thanatos, and Chernobog ults, as well as Ao Kuang exiting his ult) will be able to access the island.

I also wanted to include the story of Maui's discovery of fire. Integral to this story is providing fire to man, and what better way to do that than to involve the minions? Fire minions are a thing, so I thought it would be cool if Maui was able to buff his own minions and damage enemies. I don't think I want the fire minions to be permanent, so that buff should be temporary.

Beyond this, I wanted him to be a basic attacking warrior, with conditional/risky mobility.

The risky mobility comes into effect with Restrain the Sun, where he must pull himself toward his enemy. The move itself is sort of half Ne Zha sash and half Sylvanus pull. He also has the ability to pull himself toward a wall, but since his early game range is short, and this is likely to be the last ability leveled, he's vulnerable if he's far from a wall. The other mobility he has is as a kiwi bird, which is simply a movement speed buff.

His passive and his 2 work together to augment his standard basic attacks. As his various bird forms, he further augments his basic attacks, giving him a bit of crowd control or healing in addition, depending on the form he takes.

Study questionnaire: Tools for fighting toxic behavior in competitive multiplayer games

Posted: 26 May 2018 10:23 AM PDT

Hello r/Smite!

I am working on a study for my thesis on Games and Gamification regarding the tools available for fighting toxic behavior (for example reporting, muting, blocking) in competitive multiplayer games. My main focus are MOBA and competitive shooter games with an emphasis on objective based teamplay.

Because of Smite's popularity, I would love to have answers from the Smite community.

You can take part in the study by filling an anonymous questionnaire in the following link:

https://goo.gl/forms/A3kNljBGtJH1mQe92

The questionnaire is comprised of 5 sections with questions regarding competitive games and toxicity. Answering this questionnaire should take around 10 minutes.

If you have any questions or feedback regarding the questionnaire or my study, please don't hesitate to ask here or send me a PM.

Thanks!

A smite version of Pingu

Posted: 26 May 2018 07:33 AM PDT

We're approaching the halfway mark of 2018, and there are still Gods that have really (really) outdated models.

Posted: 26 May 2018 05:46 AM PDT

I'd like to start off accepting that remodels might not be the most sought out project for Hirez because of the high frequency of backlash. But c'mon, that alone isn't enough to excuse the fact that it's just way too outdated for a game lasting as long as this.

If people are too scared of then changing the God's model too much, texture updates are still a thing. I'm not saying it's easy, nor am I implying that this will be an instant process. But Sobek looks like a monster from a JRPG of a ps2 console.

I really feel that texture updates and remodels for numerous Gods can help the game feel more polished. Does it really have to go to the point where we'd have to play a recently released skin of a God (looking at you Sobek) just to match the current graphic standards of this game? Do we really have to use Hel's latest skin so I don't have to deal with the mop head almost every other skin has?

It's 2018 man. Xbal seems tired of fapping the air. Isis probably doesn't want to look like someone bombed her insides. Athena's getting sweaty from all the helmet skins.

Items that make gods worse?

Posted: 26 May 2018 10:47 AM PDT

I'm not talking about items that are just a waste of a slot, I'm talking about items that actually work against specific gods, such as mystical mail with Khumbakharna.

Are there any other item/god combos like this?

Rematch Button for Custom

Posted: 26 May 2018 07:13 PM PDT

It's really annoying when you want to play a few customs with friends and you have to set all the options it has once and again when you're running the same configuration all the time. I don't think it's that hard to add a rematch button, just like you can press the 'play again' button in the other game modes. It seems to have been passed over all these years. Do it at once.

Visual Feedback of Allies' Cooldowns

Posted: 26 May 2018 07:02 PM PDT

Currently, the game gives a lot of feedback, but I think we can go a little further. Why not to make allies' relic and item cooldowns be shown in the tab key, just like you can see their builds and stats?

Specially in non-communicated matches, it would be a great feature to have in the game, allowing you to know your teammates' cooldowns to play around it, making it easier to make the correct decisions like the most ideal time to engage or call for an objective.

I don't think it needs a lot of work to be implemented and would be very useful for the players.

Tips for Osiris?

Posted: 26 May 2018 02:33 PM PDT

I played Osiris, recently, he was fun, except almost every enemy god had some escape, making my 3 useless:

  • Hou Yi? Jump away because his mother was actually a kangaroo(check his lore if you don't believe me).
  • Ao Kuang? Stealth teleport water clone jutsu, like the elders in his ninja clan taught him.
  • Hercules? Dash forward, because of his cybernetic augments and so on.

I'd appreciate some help!

Who are the best gods for someone that wants to lead the fight and keep their team from dying?

Posted: 26 May 2018 01:33 PM PDT

I usually like to solo lane. I cant find my god that's just like "im going to sit here and annoy you so you dont kill my teammates "and possibly get ypu lilled in the process while i laugh at your rotting corpse"

A lot of guardians and even some warriors seem too passive for that.

If it helps my only 10th level mastery is baellona.

Hunter Builds

Posted: 26 May 2018 06:49 PM PDT

So I've been playing this game for over a year now and I'm a hunter/carry main and one thing I I hear but don't understand is why it's bad to mix Qins sai with crit. Can anyone explain why it's bad. Also I understand different build with crit and power/pen but if I using a AA focused hunter like Artemis fighting a triple tank team why would I not use qins with crit.
