Posted: 11 May 2018 01:51 PM PDT ~I've never submitted a large text post before so if the format is messed up my apologies~ Mr. Rawl stood passively on a concrete landing pad, staring into the sky. An old military engineer by trade he was awaiting a delegation of admirals coming to have a look at his pet project. He checked his HUD and clicked his tongue disapprovingly. Four minutes late and they weren't even into the atmosphere yet. He sighed and keyed a few commands into the production queues mentally, his power armor's neural interface instantly translating his carefully practiced mental orders from his brain. Encased in Mark 1 Nano Construction armor he stood about eight feet tall, a good two and some feet taller than he normally would. He took a few impatient strides closer to the landing zone as he opened a comm link to the starship parked in orbit. "Ferrum F-214 this is Factorio actual, request status of delegation three." After a few moments his reply came. "Factorio actual this is Ferrum F-214 delegation incoming, prepare to observe atmosphere entry in t-5." Rawl's HUD highlighted the entry sequence just before he could see the dropship's contrail. As he tracked it he mentally noted that the pilot was adjusting his course to make up for the time difference. He was following the requested landing path nearly perfectly. His wait finally over Rawl started a brisk walk towards the LZ. He ignored the small alarm letting him know he had walked within the ships projected engine over-wash zone. His armor's shields would dampen the heat to tolerable levels. Observing from the landing pad he watched the ship roll-over to switch to atmospheric flight. It only kicked off its flight thrusters once the heat corona faded completely. The command delegation's ship followed its remaining flight plan. The view from the ship was dominated by sprawling factory and billowing smoke. It was only from high orbit that they could still view the un-mechanized portions of the planet. The pilot put the craft down deftly, settling the ship onto its four landing struts. Once fully through its landing routine the craft popped open its airlock with an audible hiss, a ramp lowering from the front. Eight men in crisp dress-uniform walked out and down the ramp. "We're late gentlemen, walk quickly." grumbled Rawl. As he turned and began loping away he could hear the officers grouse and complain about his lack of decorum. He gave it no mind. If the men wanted pomp and red ribbons for their welcome they could visit a glitter-world with all their addictive hospitality. He wasn't in the military anymore and their rank was immaterial. The thought actually gave him pause for a moment. In his irritation he had briefly forgotten that no glitter worlds remained. They had all long since fallen to the thrice damned xenos. They had been well defended by human peacetime standards, but whether by luck or planning the xenos had evaded even their most advanced early warning systems. Humanity was caught unprepared for a conflict on so large a scale. That fact was the very reason why he was here on this frontier world trying to prove unshackled nano-gear could be used without causing a gray goo event. He spared a glance back at his guests, taking inventory of their appearance. He sighed and turned to face them once again. "We are travelling by train. It's a fifty three minute trip from here to listening post echo where your visitor's barracks and the briefing room are located," explained Rawl gruffly. "I will explain the construction and function of this factory once we are there, any questions?" "Yes, is there any food on the way? We were not permitted to eat 24 hours before making planet fall." replied one of the younger looking men. "There is." replied Rawl "Protein bar rations and multi-vitamins are available to keep you going while you're here." Watching the officers faces carefully he was inwardly amused at the indignation he saw rising in several of them. That amusement evaporated faster than water on molten steel when the next man spoke up. "That's it? That's the best food you can offer us? We're used to….a little better effort if I may say so." drawled the man who by the looks of his rank insignias, was the leader of the group." "Excuse me?" whispered the old engineer. He retracted his helmet so the men could see his face. "I was unaware this was your vacation admiral. I was under the impression you are here because you are out of supplies as well as options. I was inclined to believe you are here because your command of our military led to the worst defeat that humanity has ever had the misfortune to record in our history books. Am I mistaken?" The man opened and shut his mouth several times trying and speak, but no sounds came out so the irate engineer continued. "Get on the goddamn train, sit your ass down, and shut the fuck up. I am going to explain in very small and simple words how this factory works over the next few days. Your job is to make an attempt at understanding what I'm telling you and then go rubber stamp my approval papers. It's not as if you have a choice. This is the first forge world humanity has, and the last bastion of hope for your mangled fleet to re-arm and repair. Make no mistake, this is a formality. This idiotic show of bureaucracy shouldn't even be happening in our current position. So welcome to this little Factorio of mine. You'll be leaving as soon as I can get rid of you." ~If you made it this far thank you for reading! Criticism is both welcome and appreciated since im still an amatuer writer and trying to improve. I only briefly edited so there are probably some punctuation and general grammar errors.~ [link] [comments]

Posted: 11 May 2018 06:20 AM PDT It's midnight. This is the 1150th day since I crash-landed on this planet. It was unfortunate that the shuttle was nearly destroyed and beyond repair, but at least I survived, along with some materials and vital instruments that can get me started on this exotic world. With the help of the tools and the hard work of myself, I started from manually mining the ores to steam power, from making every thing by myself to machines that help me craft everything, and from manually moving items everywhere to bots that do the carrying for me. Despite the fact that natives do not seem to like such an intruder like me, my base was gradually expanding, and the research had advanced enough that I'm able to produce a rocket and have a hope of finally escaping from this place. I patrol around the base, tweaking the configuration for better efficiency. The humming of the assembling machines with the rotating noises of the inserters form a rhythm beating at a steady pace, and the logistic bots bringing items around fly with beeps at various pitches. As the readings on the indicators slowly increases and approaches 100%, my heart is filled with the feeling of content and achievement. "Finally, this day has come," I speak to myself. While I soak myself in the sea of happiness, a warning pulls me back to reality. I take a peek at the radar. "Those bugs again," I think, "It looks there are some new types of them, probably caused by the rises of the evolution factor recently. Anyway, I believe my defenses can deal with them." Just as I was thinking, the warning turns into an ear-piercing alarm – something was damaged. "No way!" I shout with shock, rushing to the site, which is on the opposite side of my base, as fast as I can. However, It's too late. The hordes of biters and spitters have breached layers of walls and turrets and proceed to cut though the electric line and the power plant with no sign of stopping. I am terrified, witnessing the light blacked out due to insufficient power, and the factory wiped out by wave of enemy. So much work of building, designing and researching just get brought back to zero in a blink of an eye. I never feel so helpless. As the circle of death surrounds me, the sense of terror and loneliness pulls me out of the immersion. It's 4 AM. I was sitting on the chair. In front of me was my laptop with Factorio running. "This is quite a run," I thought, "With the lesson learned, I sure can do better next time." [link] [comments]

Posted: 11 May 2018 11:04 AM PDT And I freaking love this game. I beat the demo, and the next day I was still thinking about this game so I restarted it to see if I missed anything. I killed every alien in the demo, and set up a full production chain. The final objective is to scan 50 zones, so I figured the most grandiose way of doing that is to build 50 radars. My setup: https://imgur.com/a/y7E0mS5 My radars: https://imgur.com/a/ANCenfS Even the demo has me addicted! I am honestly scared to try the main game. My best friend and my girl friend told me I cant buy the full game until after finals, but its going to be a long week! [link] [comments]

Posted: 11 May 2018 02:20 PM PDT So as I've been playing Bobs mods I've gotten quite curious about a lot of the refining procedures and how they work in real life (steam cracking, ore refining, blasting, etc.). Does anybody know any good documentaries or videos or whatever about this sort of industry related stuff? I know I could just read Wikipedia but I kinda want something I can listen to while I play. Thanks [link] [comments]

Posted: 11 May 2018 01:09 PM PDT I finally figure out train signals!!!!! Hour 1: Play train tutorial, "Pffft screw this, I'll learn it later" Hour 100: "Meh I'll play with trains later I have 5000 drones to do my bidding" Hour 500: "Trains are so STUPID!!! Why would anyone want to play with these?!?!?" Hour 1000: "You know those resources on the other side of the map sure would be nice to get to.... Hour 1200: "Choo choo!!! 3 dedicated lines, 3 dedicated trains yay it works! Let's combine them now.... BOOM CRASH!!! BANG!!!!!KABOOOOM!!!! so..... signals...... :/ Hour 1250: "2 trains going to two mines and dumping like BUTTAH!!!!" Wife "Honey can you take out the trash?" Me "BUT MAH TRAINS!!!!!!!!!!!" Its not much, it certainly isn't as complicated as some of the stuff I've seen here.... but I can now see the draw lol -edited for formatting- [link] [comments]

How do I limit science packs in trains? Posted: 11 May 2018 04:55 PM PDT I have one area of my base where I create science packs. They are limited by smart inserters where I may say "don't put more science packs in to this chest if there are already 500 in there" These chests go out to the train station where they get picked up and brought back to my science area where once again, there are more inserters that limit how many packs go in to the chests. The problem is, I can't limit the amount of science packs on the train, the train will pick up the packs, and bring them to the science area, then will not insert them because of the limit. Because of this, they get off balanced. Now i have a train full of purple and yellow science packs, but it wont take any space science packs because that's my current bottle neck. What tool can I use to limit how many of each pack the train can hold up to at most? that way I can keep things balanced. I dont know if theres a way to run a red cable to a train station or whatever. [link] [comments]
