So, the guys in WoW datamined this new pet to be obtainable in the upcoming expansion Battle for Azeroth in World of Warcraft. I was wondering if this can be a bonus item for those that buy a possible new Diablo content or if it is hinting on an upcoming D3 Expansion. What do you guys think?

Bliss Version Switcher will be rewritten in C#/.NET (Currently Java).

Posted: 10 May 2018 07:47 AM PDT

Hello all,

Over the next two weeks I'll be rewritting Bliss Version Switcher to C#/.NET. BVS is an application I wrote many years ago to allow people to easily Time Travel in D2 (Play multiple versions easily). This allowed the person to easily isolate multiple versions (or multiple instances of the same version - Like if you wanted to have separate character stashes for 1.14 Classic, and 1.14d Expansion or any combination you can imagine). With this, it also allowed the person to maximize disk space since BVS re-uses the same base MPQ files and just switches the files that changed between versions, specifically .dlls and the Patch_D2.mpq (If needed.. 1.00 and 1.07 don't have Patch_D2.mpq since they are the first versions for Classic and Expansion). I wanted to start the rewrite with .NET Core 3 and the Windows Desktop Packs (for WPF) since I like .NET cores Dependency Injection extensions.. but .NET Core 3 won't be available until 2019 so I will just go with .NET Framework and hopefully it will be as easy as Microsoft is saying it will be to migrate .NET Framework apps over to .NET Core 3.

The reason for rewriting BVS are the following:

- I've learned a lot more on how to develop production applications due to many more years of experience in the industry. Which means I can actually start to effectively use Unit Testing, Dependency Injection, and IoC techniques in order to have safer and more stable code between updates. It also allows potential developers that want to contribute to BVS to fork the code, make their changes, and run my tests in order to verify that something wasn't broken, which means fewer regressions.

- I really really like C#/.NET a lot more than Java. If Microsoft did anything right, it was C# and the .NET framework.

- WPF is a massive win. It will allow me to design the application using WPF/XAML which simplifies the code a lot. Also WPF is DPI aware which means that BVS will automatically work beautifully on the newer high resolution monitors.

- Native Registry Communication. At the moment, the way that BVS switches the Save Path and Resolution keys that are stored in the registry (when you switch versions) is that it creates a .reg file with the corresponding keys, it reads that .reg file, and then it removes the .reg file. I didn't want to use JNI when I first implemented this since I felt it was over engineering. Since the application will now be in C#, I can use the native windows registry libraries in the .NET framework to communicate directly with the registry.

- Native UAC privileges elevation. At the moment, if you have Diablo II installed in your program files directory, and if you have UAC enabled, you will need to run BVS with the BVS_UAC.bat script. The reason for this is that java applications in out of themselves cannot be ran as administrator since the program running the application is the java virtual machine. Thus in order for you to run BVS in admin mode, you basically need to run the 'java' application itself in admin mode. With the switch to C#, the outputted file will be in the native windows .exe format rather than being a jar file.

These are the main reasons for rewriting the application, I've debated whether or not I wanted to do this since BVS is already stable and in maintenance mode, and D2 is an old game, but I think it will be fun to test out all of the above stuff and it will provide a smoother experience for users.

- Jonathan
