Theorycraft Thursday - Discuss Builds, Skills, Strategies, and More!

Posted: 12 Jul 2018 02:00 AM PDT

Welcome to Theorycraft Thursday, a community-building, regularly occurring thread in the subreddit!

MMO veterans will know that Theorycrafting is the core of many discussions about this genre of games, and ESO is no different.

With the high level of variance in builds, skills, and stats, there's plenty of room for Theorycrafting, and we want to see what you have to share with the community on that front.

Have a build you've experimented with? A particular skill or set of skills that synergize well? A strategy for PvE or PvP that works to great effect? Share it here!

If you're new, you can also use this thread to ask questions about viable builds and skills as well!

As always, please keep in mind our rules on the sidebar, especially the one about no personal attacks, callouts, rude behavior, or other such disrespectful content.

Disagree respectfully and know that everyone has different ideas and playstyles that suit them.

[Guide] A Little Guide to Running Away From Guards

Posted: 12 Jul 2018 12:49 AM PDT

Greetings, friends! This one predicts many new faces in the shadows, as the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild open their doors to all this week.

But not all like our little game. This one means, of course, the pesky guards who patrol the cities and try to stop every citizen who just takes a dish or two lying in the open.

Unless you wish to be put in stocks, you would be wise to learn how to run from them.

In normal streets, just running is enough. Don't panic, and break line of sight as much as possible. Be cunning, and swift. It doesn't take too many turns to lose the stupid guards, just be careful not to run straight into more. Apparently they are psychic, and angering one will alert every guard in Tamriel to you.

It would be wise to have a stamina potion equipped, for the guards love to root you to the ground, and you must break free (LT+RT). If you are fortunate enough to be a Sorcerer or a Warden, I have seen many valiant pets and bears hold off angry Elves as their masters flee.

Things will get easier, as you learn the layout of the cities you stay in, and where the local Outlaws' Refuges are.

Buildings can be rat-traps, you cannot open doors as guards stab your back. However, simply run upstairs, and then nimbly jump down to the first floor, preferably right in front of the main door. You may break a claw or two as you fall, but the slow guards will not be able to follow you immediately. This gives you precious seconds to open the door, and flee outside. In smaller one-story buildings, this one advises not attempting anything.

Running into the wilderness is a safe way to flee, guards will not pursue you far beyond the city walls.

This one hates getting his fur wet, but the easiest escape is into the water. Guards may cast a spell or two at your tail, but none will pursue you into the water. So this one is particularly fond of browsing the docks, checking inside the ships, rummaging the pockets of a drunken sailor or two. It makes for a very safe, profitable walk. This one's lizard friends are particularly good at this, swimming away very fast and laughing at the guards from the opposite shore. The boats of Glenumbra are nice, and Davon's Watch is particularly profitable- some nice thieves often leave a shiny, purple Trove inside the ships there. In general, Davon's Watch is this one's favorite city for... collecting things.

If worst comes to worst, it may be efficient to have several characters to switch to while your bounty runs out. Or, this one goes fishing until the guards forget his face.

If anyone has other tips, this one would love to discuss our little game further.

The biggest tragedy of the Falkreath dungeon is that it's not a town or explorable area.

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 04:53 PM PDT

Played the newer DLC dungeons today with the ESO+ week-long demo. I actually have all the DLC like morrowind, CWC and Summerset the only DLC I don't have are the Horns of the Reach and Dragon Bones dungeon add-ons, so I've used this week to play them.

I really like Falkreath's look aesthetically. The Reachmen minotaurs are formidable enemies, I like their design and the boss mechanics themselves are interesting enough.

My only complaint is that Falkreath itself isn't a town or zone given how great it looks in the dungeon area. I wanted to pull away from the group the whole time and just wander. I kept thinking to myself that it would be a great mini-addition to the game sometime down the road. Maybe that's something ZOS can work on in the future, little "mini-zone" add-ons. It would be great to have The Reach and Falkreath in the rest of the game, as well as maybe even the town of Solitude someday in the future.

I almost wish I could be a Minotaur Reachman as a playable character, with it's own skill lines. Maybe in the future I guess, after they introduce the Necromancer ;)

Jewelry crafting and it's beyond tedious grind

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 05:35 PM PDT

So this is for the gold plating. The upgrade material you get from getting 10 gold dust. So the TTC price is around 73K - 92K. But lets low ball it and say it's 75K. You need 8 to guarantee an upgrade, which would cost a heavy 600 Thousand gold, or an entire set for 1.8 Million gold. Doesn't this seem a bit too much for the very, VERY minor change to the trait that this offers?

[All Platforms] Lore: Clarification on Dragonknights

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 05:37 PM PDT

So for full disclosure; I'm a Dragonknight, and I'm fascinated with all things Draconic. In fact, I did an essay on the dragon of Orsinium, Inwaharthrosidro, of Exile's Barrow. I wish I could say that Dragonknights were students of the Dragons, but this is what I've gathered.

Dragonknights are the Tamrielic descendant on the Dragonguard's draconic martial magic(Which I will refer to as Dracony). The most well-documented encounter with a Dragonknight is in "Ardent Flame: Draconic or Endemic?"

According to this particular Dragonknight, he learned his martial magic from a half-Akaviri (which really just means Akaviri. All Akaviri we see are actually a result of Akavir-Tamrelic interbreeding) armsmaster. It can be assumed that he was familiar with, if not a retired master, of Dracony. Now, proud Dragonknights (fe, the Intrepid Two-Hundred from Smite with Dragon Claws) will say that they 'are dragons'. But this is implausible.

Maybe, maybe, with some suspension of disbelief, one could believe that the Akavir halfbreeds and purebreeds were taught by the Dragons, but do you really believe that the exact nature of Dracony could be passed down generation from generation with extreme accuracy? I don't believe that's realistic.

"Well," you could say, "Zorlin, what is your theory, or idea?"

I think, realistically speaking, the Akavir Dragonslayers revered, in an odd way, the Dragons. Remember, the Akavir were constantly at odds with the Dragons, going so far as to follow them to Tamriel to hunt them down. So how likely is it that an Akaviri was taught Dragon Magic? I think it is more likely that Dracony was developed as mimicry of the Dragons using Akaviri magic and martial tactics. As it passed from generation to generation, it changed, into what we know as the Dragonknight's abilities, Ardent Flame, Draconic Power, Earthen Heart. And when the halfbreed Akaviri taught Tamrielics Dracony, it mutated and evolved into these abilities as we know them today.

But hey, Mimicry is the greatest flattery, right? Just because it's mimicry doesn't make it any less spectacular, useful, or dangerous. Nor does it belittle or insult the Dragons, in my personal opinion. Then again, the Dov were predominantly hateful of mortals, so who am I to say they would not be infuriated at Dracony and the Dragonknights?

Hope you enjoyed this little treatise. Feel free to offer criticism or alternate ideas.

Edit: Grammar

Loot drops in trials

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 06:25 PM PDT

Sorry but this is going to be quick post to let my frustration out. I had this guy in hel ta citadel drop a blue AY axe, which I needed and no one else did. He wanted to sell and asked me my price. I told him I don't know as people usually give it for free but I was ready to pay 20k. Then he suddenly closed the trade and spammed in a Germanic language " 20k lol this guy is paying me 20k for yokeda axe". I replied that no one wanted it in our group and I wasn't ready to pay the 80k he initially wanted. So he decon'ed it :D I have not met many stupid people in this game but boy when I do, it hurts.

Sorry about this messy post, just needed to let it out. Peace.

Edit: Thank you for the support, I slept through it and feel much better now haha now off to searching for a good raiding guild :)

Gear for running around collecting skyshards

Posted: 12 Jul 2018 12:50 AM PDT

Hey guys,

After trying different builds, I've chosen to focus on my magblade as I found it the most fun. I am now gonna collect skyshards, lorebooks (just the sets) and psjic rifts from every zone, so now I am on the lookout for something that will help ease running around, since my horse is currently posessing an impressive speed of 5%. I have already made routes for some of the maps, so I just to need fix some gear to do them faster.

So far I have thought of:

21% = 7x Medium armor

5% = Mondus stone

16% = 2 rings with swift (blue quality)

30% = Rapid Maneuver

15% = Fiords set (With divines or well-fitted)

87% = Sum

So my question is if all of these stack and/or if I should change anything?

Power extraction

Posted: 12 Jul 2018 03:02 AM PDT

I see this skill in absolutly no stamblade build out there. Sure, potions give you that, but I doubt everybody uses potions for all content.

So, for soloing, is power extraction good?

And for regular dungeons? Or for any content where I dont use potions?

An in-game character bio/description

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 09:29 PM PDT

I think it would be neat if there was a page where you could write a character bio/description in-game or at the character select screen. You could write info about your build, your characters backstory, just a general introduction to yourself, your cheesiest dad jokes, etc. Maybe it could also list your achievements in it. People could view it through the character interact menu or by right-clicking your name in chat, or you could set it so only friends/guildies could view it. Any thoughts or opinions on this?

I might get ESO Plus!

Two days in with the free trial and to be honest, the craft bag is a game changer, it feels for me so much like an QOL upgrade, I didn't even touched the DLCs yet. I guess for just 12 bucks per month it's totally worth it and all the additional other stuff you get (DLC access, less researching time, extra EXP buff, double bank storage etc).

TLDR: ok

Stamplar Rant

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 11:24 AM PDT

Resource management/sustainability has been a longstanding issue for stamplars. This has been communicated to ZOS, yet the only changes to stamplar in the Wolfhunter update make the problem worse. The cost of Rune Focus has increased while the maximum duration has decreased, and the range of melee heavy attacks has been reduced. I understand the Rune Focus change was probably made with magplars in mind, for whom the cost is negligible, and the heavy attack nerf wasn't specifically targeted at stamplars, but they hurt nonetheless and are only the latest in a string of collateral nerfs that hurt a class which has lagged behind other classes in both PvE and PvP for most of the life of the game.

Another stamplar issue which is known by ZOS is their terrible passives. They gain absolutely no combat advantage from Mending, Light Weaver, Master Ritualist, Enduring Rays, and Illuminate. When you consider that the stamplar's signature attack, Biting Jabs, is a channel, the the utility of Spear Wall goes from questionable to non-existent. That's six useless passives out of twelve!

Speaking of channeling issues, the new focus on light attacks and sets like Relequen which rely upon them only serves to widen the gulf between stamplars and other stam classes.

Finally, Repentance. I know certain influencers out there can't get enough Repentance, and ZOS thinks it brings unique flavor to the class, but it's a shit skill. It's always been a shit skill. And it's been rendered shittier and shittier with every balance update. These sentiments are widely held and known to ZOS, but have so far been ignored. One possible solution: move the passive recovery bonuses to Cleansing Ritual, Rune Focus, one of their morphs or one of the Restoring Light passives, and replace the active skill with Blinding Flashes or something.

Current PVE DPS meta

Posted: 12 Jul 2018 12:40 AM PDT

I am a bit begrudged to ask this as I know similar questions get asked a lot but have come back from hiatus and am having trouble establishing current DPS meta at the higher tiers aside from a lot of conflicting hearsay and outdated claims.

So yeah essentially what are guilds looking for as far as DPS goes for mag and stam atm?

Thanks.

Maelstrom dagger/axe still useful?

So I got a Dagger and axe from my first clear. Is it still worth to use this?

Or using 2, 5 piece bonus sets with a monster set is better?
