Not joking, I will post a video.

I just want to have some silver lining if King K. Rool doesn't end up making the cut. I've wanted him in since Brawl. If he doesn't get in now, I can think to myself "Hey, at least I don't need to eat a shoe". I probably won't kill myself then.

If he does get in, I will be so overcome with joy that I won't even notice that I'm eating a shoe.

He has to be a playable fighter though, none of that assist trophy or straight up trophy bullshit.

See you in a few months, reddit. Hopefully I will be eating a shoe in that time.

Edit: Scheduling may be hard, especially if he ends up being a later or day-of-release reveal as my semester finals are in late December. Also the exact parameters of "eating" need to be defined. I'm not going to down an entire shoe, sole and all. Probably just the edible parts like the tongue and other leather pieces. I'm no pussy, but I'm not suicidal. That's only if he doesn't make it in.

Edit 2: As funny as eating crocs would be, I'm not sure if eating them without serious health complications is possible. I could eat a shoe made of alligator skin, like /u/A_Splash_of_Citrus suggested, but still I also need it to be absorbent so I can cook it with sauces that will allow me to swallow it. Right now it's leather, but we do have a pretty long time to decide.

So why did Sakurai need a mecha rifle for reference?

If you haven't seen the article, Sakurai mentioned that he bought a mecha toy so that he could use the rifle as reference for his current project. It's pretty clear at this point that that project he was referencing is Smash Switch. So what is it for?

There are 5 possibilities here in my opinion: A new character, an assist trophy, a boss for a stage or adventure mode, an item, or a trophy. I think trophy is unlikely though because I doubt that Sakurai designs the trophies, let alone would buy a reference toy for one.

Whatever it is, I think we should assume that it isn't anything too recent. For example, I doubt that the rifle would be for a Splat Charger for Inkling because it's new enough for him to not need a reference to help with design. He would just go with the already modern and natural feeling design.

My personal favorite guess is something Star Fox, leaning towards a redesigned Wolf or Krystal with an Assault feel. I also feel that someone from Custom Robo would get use out of a rifle as reference. Supposedly it could apply to several Kid Icarus Uprising characters/items, but I'll admit that my knowledge of that game is incredibly lacking.

What do you guys think? What characters and items could this be hinting at?

Trying to use Smash 4's newcomers to predict this game's

Rex & Pyra - The one everyone saw coming (Palutena)

After Kid Icarus got a new entry in the series made by Sack of Rye himself, it became commonplace expectation for Palutena to get in. Fake leaks often included her for bonus viability points. This time, that role seems to fall to Rex & Pyra, the protagonists of the newest entry of Xenoblade, which also got a representative in the previous Smash. Sakurai liked Xenoblade 2 and even if you think Rex is too young, remember that Greninja was 11 months old when he was added to Smash and Xenoblade development time is much longer than that of a Pokemon game.

Dixie Kong - Expected because they're wanted (Little Mac)

Little Mac was a similar choice that a lot of people expected to see, mostly because he was a popular choice among fans. Dixie Kong is similar. She has general popularity among most, and makes sense as a new representative for DK, which many are clamoring for a new representative. Personally, I would love K. Rool to get in by the same criteria but I'm hesitant.

Rayman - The third party that makes sense (Pac-Man)

Ubisoft and Nintendo have always had a good relationship, but in the midst of a brand new crossover featuring Mario and the Rabbids, the connection is stronger than ever. Development of the game was underway while the Smash roster was likely being discussed, and I think Ubisoft would be glad to allow Rayman and a Mario + Rabbids stage to appear. The reason I didn't predict Rabbids is because Sakurai has probably seen Rayman requests over the course of the years, as well as the ballot.

Chibi-Robo - Overdue series to Smash (Villager)

Chibi-Robo may be on its last life, but nonetheless the series is still relevant and Chibi got a lot of moveset ideas to help Sakurai in Zip Lash. Sakurai likes to bring new series into Smash each game, and Chibi Robo makes a lot of sense to include in this one. If he doesn't make it, I don't see the Chibi-Robo series recovering.

Spring Man - New series to Smash (Shulk)

ARMS is recent, yes, and the developer acknowledged it as such, but Spring Man was first shown to the world January 2017, which is a long time ago. I think Spring Man is just old enough to make the cut, and Sakurai would surely like the potential a stretchy-limbed fighter could bring.

Lyn - Intelligent Systems request (Robin/Corrin)

Intelligent Systems likes to approach Sakurai about including characters for them. We know for sure it happened with Corrin. Intelligent Systems has a habit of approaching people for appending rosters. In FE Warriors, Lucina was nearly cut before IS intervened and said she was too popular to remove. They also added Lyn to the roster, despite the game focusing on three games exclusively. This is because Lyn's popularity has really shone through recently, and IS are capitalising on that as much as they can.

They do love their marketing, so it's also possible that we could get a FE16 rep, but Lyn has been an Assist Trophy for a long time. In addition, I don't think IS will allow Lucina to get cut for similar reasons, so Lyn would replace Roy as the representative for Elibe.

Impa/Mipha - Expanding a series (Rosalina/Bow Jr.)

A simple, not-too-exciting choice to expand a veteran series in Smash. It could be Impa, possibly, but it could also be a Champion from Breath of the Wild. I say this because everyone expected the new Mario rep to be Toad/Captain Toad in Smash 4, but Sakurai went with the more interesting choices, disregarding history. This is also why I don't expect Toad in this game either.

Ridley - You asked for it (Mega Man)

Hold on a second. I think Ridley genuinely has a chance this time. We know Sakurai has changed his mind before with the villager. And I think the massive fan demand will press him to reconsider. Ridley would be a very hype inducing choice which every game needs, tie in with Metroid 4, and introduce a new heavyweight which Sm4sh did not add.

Excitebiker / Takamaru - Token Retro (Duck Hunt)

Excitebiker has been considered before but dumped due to lacking moveset potential, but Sakurai may revisit him. Takamaru has also been on Sakurai's radar for a while, and may be less hesitant to ignore him with the roster being so big now. Of course, it could also be like R.O.B. and be a choice no one sees coming.

Pokemon - Because (Greninja)

Everyone expects Decidueye. But I disagree, and I love Decidueye. Greninja was chosen when X&Y were very young, and there was no other info on Greninja except for the design. However, this time it's different. Decidueye was likely finished for a long time. And I don't think Sakurai would choose him given the choice. I think Mimikyu has potential, but Pokemon Switch is supposedly due this year, meaning that including a Gen 8 Pokemon could still happen.

??? - Off the wall choice (Wii Fit Trainer)

Who knows. The best guess I can make is Rhythm Heaven or Style Savvy. Mayhaps even the Chorus Kids. But again, who knows.
