I tested 20+ settings and their influence on input lag with a 1000FPS camera.

Posted: 26 Apr 2018 01:27 PM PDT

TL;DR: The only thing that influences input lag noticibly is VSync, BenQ instant mode and a framerate under 150FPS

Test Results

setting influence on input lag ^ ^
no noticable difference to basic settings(+-1ms) slightly noticable higher noticable higher
basic settings(300FPS) ~10ms - -
vsync on (double buffer) - - +20ms

Further Comments Regarding The Results

Input lag is the time between moving your mouse and the reaction on your monitor. For each settings I did 10-15 tests and compared the averages. Im aware of the fact that this is a rather small sample size so I dont take any responsibility for the correctness of my results. I have to mention that a larger sample size would take too much time for the amount of settings.

For the results I assumed that a input lag difference of 4ms is not noticable. Anything beyond 4ms I called slightly noticable and beyond 10ms I called noticable. I base this assumption on results where people tested their sensitivity to input lag with a program and people couldn't reach a number lower than 5ms. Here is the link: https://forums.blurbusters.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1134.

The average results for my basic settings as well as the results for the settings which were not noticibly different all varied between 9-11ms which is very low and dont need any improvement. I might publish my exact data but I worry that people start assuming differences in input lag which might be true or not. All I cared about was if there are settings which made a noticable difference.

It seems like nothing has a NOTICABLE influence on input lag though except VSYNC, whether your FPS is above 200 and if BenQ instant mode is on or off. Of course many settings increase input lag indirectly on lower end systems due to their influence on FPS.

My Basic Settings and PC Setup

I tried to start with the most default settings possible. I deleted my userdata folder, deleted all workshop maps, reset my NVIDIA settings and set my BIOS to default except the CPU frequency and my CPU voltage. You find all other settings in this imgur gallery: https://imgur.com/a/znh796p

Here is the default config which I got after I deleted my userdata folder and redownloaded the default config through steam: http://textuploader.com/dfd0j.

This is my autoexec which didnt add any input lag: http://textuploader.com/df14p.

  • m_rawinput 1

  • multicore rendering on

  • mat_queue_mode -1

  • hyperthreading on

  • stable 300FPS

  • BenQ instant mode on

Intel i7-4770k overclocked at 4.2Ghz

GA Z87X UD3H

EVGA GTX 970 4GB

8GB RAM 1333Mhz

CSGO installed on SSD

Logitech G100s (500hz)

BenQ XL2411 144hz

My Testing Method

I bought a Casio EX-ZR100 with a 1000FPS video function then I used a stick to hit my mouse and recorded my mouse and my monitor and counted the frames between the point where the mouse started moving and my monitor changing the image. You can find an example of a test in the following video: https://youtu.be/6iAVsCU6APc

My advice for low input lag

  • Turn VSYNC off

  • Turn instant mode on if you have a BenQ

  • maximize your FPS with settings like low resolution and low graphics quality and buy a good enough CPU/GPU to have stable 150FPS. You should prefer CPU's with a high single core performance because CSGO still uses DirectX 9 which doesnt benefit as much from 4+ cores.

  • dont listen to Input-Lag-Fix-Guides unless they tested their claims

Placebo

So since my tests are not 1ms accurate it is possible that some of these settings lower your input lag by 1ms and if you choose the right combination you end up with 5 instead of 10ms. If you only change one of these settings though which I labeled as "not noticable" and you notice a difference, its probably a placebo UNLESS it gave you an FPS boost which lowers your input lag.

Future tests

Which other settings would you like to be tested?

Cheers,

Mr P1r4nh44444

Finnish ministry of education and culture now official recognizes esports as a sports.

Posted: 26 Apr 2018 04:01 AM PDT

Yet again, this is another step for young Finnish players who dream of professional career.

What this basically means is that when you have normal physical education, you could also take classes on esports (but not completely replacing the traditional sports) and that way in young age start learning things that are good for potential upcoming professional career.

This also means that government will most likely start funding esports related stuff more easily. (For example, Finnish esports federation already receives some funds from government but now as their "sport federation", they will get more money to improve their services)

6 months ago Finnish military service accepted esport players to athlete military service.
