Learn Dota 2 - My mentality reaching from 900 to 4000 mmr.

My mentality reaching from 900 to 4000 mmr.

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:16 AM PDT

I started playing dota about 2 and half years ago, less than a month before ti5. I really loved the game and played a lot with friends for about a year, we were all around 1k, the one with most mmr was 1800, and I was 1200. After about 9 months they stopped playing, and I started to play alone. When I calibrated solo I was 900 mmr. I really wanted to improve and I did. Within 5 months I managed to reach 3500 mmr, but then had to take a couple months break for school, and sank down to 3k. As I reached 3500 came out the ti7 battlepass, and I worked to get 3800, but then sank right down, and then played less and less. And then after a month or so I started playing again, not too much. As the new ranks got included I calibrated at Legend[0], but after my first game got Legend[1]. since then I played a lot, and after like two weeks got Legend[2], and then went on a spree till legend 5, that I got at 3900, and as I reached 4000 I dropped to 3800. After that I played less and less, then played a bit more, and got Ancient[0] as I got to 1 game away from 4k again. Now, here was my progress and how I learned:

  • I started off playing only mid, didn't enjoy supporting and wanted to play alone, depend on ME. I learned to avoid fights I don't need, to farm faster, not to do nothing, and all in all to have a goal in mind: Get super farmed and win.

  • After learning the importance of being ahead, and of taking the right fights I learned the importance of power spikes. Some items make me really strong, and some Items make me unkillable, and I need to use them right. Like a radiance on alchemist makes me strong, but instead of going around to kill people and lose my advantage after some time, I could farm for 10 more minutes, get manta, travels, octarine go roshan and simply win. And that is what I did(with all kind of heroes), aim for power spikes.

  • Small items. After doing all that I learned the importance of small items such as a wand, and instead of playing every hero like alchemist, I would actively get those small items, lots of them, raindrops if I need, wand almost every game etc, since I knew I needed them.

  • Split push, at this point I was farming way faster than people in my bracket(3k), I mean constant 600-700 gpm, but I didn't always win(like 70% winrate), why was that? since I was not progressing the game. So I started to split push, instead of defending something I cannot, I would trade with them and force them to make a choice, usually the lack of teamplay made them make mistakes(such as strongest core tp to defend tier 2 when they want to take hg).

  • After that I was in a stale for a while, and did not improve, until blitz came out with his video about good and bad farm, where I actively tried to stay out of the jungle habits(6.88 jungle farm was insane), and to simply push out waves as much as I can, force the enemy to react. This allowed me to improve my mmr a lot and to be much better than I was.

  • Efficiency, after I did that I started to try to tread switch even more, backpack/drop items when regen etc, and get a ton of clarities, all in all just be efficient with my mana, hp and items.

  • After that I expanded my role. Instead of only playing mid, I started to play roaming a lot and really enjoyed it, but was not very good at it at first. After I got good at it I started playing offlane, and then I started playing support. I became proficient at every role except for pos 1.

  • Knowing my goal. As I learned every role, It became much easier for me to know what I want to achieve and when. When I was playing support I knew I don't need to get wards the second they are out of stock, since we have all the vision we want, so I can save for X to be more helpful. Or I don't need to finish my forcestaff since we need vision to push this tower etc. Or If I was playing offlane I knew they are 3 in my lane, so I might not be doing well but the rest of my team is playing 4v2, so it should be good as long as I dont feed etc. I started thinking about what I need to achieve, instead of looking how much farm I have/towers etc.

  • Positioning. Lastly I managed to improve my positioning in fights, for example as an earthspirit I cannot just roll into a fight after 20 mins or so, since I will blow up as a support, but If I stay back, get good silences and stuns I can find my chance, or If I blink stun I can ult etc. Or maybe as a ogre I dont want to get close, only bloodlust my carries and stun the enemy? Or as storm I can go to the backlines etc.

Warlock support is very strong

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 10:23 AM PDT

Warlock support is safe to first pick, viable in both position 4/5. I've been spamming him a lot recently and found a lot of success, so I'll share this post for those looking to climb up by supporting! I certainly believe Warlock is a great support anywhere between 1k-3.8k, since Warlock can be played greedy (Aghs rush), and highly impact the game.

Skill Build:

Take the 2nd spell, Shadow Word, at level 1 (unless situational). It is very good for sustaining in lane. Your job is to heal your safelane carry so he won't have to go back to the fountain for the first 5 minutes. It can be used to zone out the offlaner. The 3rd spell, Upheaval is a channeling spell, which is kind of broken when the enemies do not bother to kite it down. I find myself mastering Upheaval over Shadow Word very often, but it comes down to preferences and lane-ups. Your skill build should look something like 0-3-2-1 at level 6. One value point in Fatal Bond is fine if you're dealing with illusion/summoner heroes.

Itemization:

If you're playing position 5, start with a courier, 2 Obs wards, 1 sentry, Tango, Healing Salve, Clarity. Positoin 4 can be tricky, but you'd want to buy sufficient regen to win the lane. Purchase Brown Boots asap by the side shop.

In big picutre, there are 2 ways of playing Warlock.

A) Arcane Boots/Glimmer Cape/Forcestaff (Position 5)

This build is used when you're forced to play dead poor under situation where you cannot absolutely find a space to farm. Help your safelane carry win the lane by abusing Shadow Word, and stick with your team ~ minute 10. Use your ultimate to open a teamfight or secure a kill. Upheaval is still insanely strong in big clash, so remember to cast your Upheaval right after dropping the Golem bomb.

B) Brown Boots/Midas -> Aghs+Refresher (Position 4)

You can easily pick up Aghs by minute 20 if you manage to collect some bounty runes and made correct rotation to farm. Skipping Midas is fine. Cast your ultimate to initiate or counter initiate. Cast Fatal Bond and Upheaval. Then, focus on controling your Golems to right click your enemies. Once you get Aghs, remember that your ultimate is a game changing spell like Black Hole. It has a very long cooldown, so be careful not to waste it in goofy fights. Position 4 Warlock can win the game by himself. Get Refresher when the game gets dragged on to super late. If you drop Golems twice in a row (3 times with Refrehser Orb), nobody can survive the clash unless they pop BKB. Therefore, the counterplay is wait for their enemy BKB to end, or cast your ultimate before they pop BKB.

Talent Tree:

Level 10: +150 Cast Range

Level 15: 60% XP gain

Level 20: Summons a Golem on death

Level 25: Golems Magic Immunity

(Talent can always go either way by situation, but the above is what I find the most impactful.)

The link below is the recent game of mine playing Warlock as position 5. I communicated with my team a lot, so this video can be helpful if you're willing to watch how Divine players make advantage in early game and leverage from it.

Phantom Lancer & Diffusal blade question

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:24 PM PDT

How does one initiate with a PL and his Diffusal....

1) Do you use Q first to reach him and then use diffusal?

2) Do you use W, then diffusal and Q as required?

3) Do you start out with hitting with Diffusal blade and then W and later Q as required?

How to play against a good axe as invoker?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 06:02 PM PDT

Wondering if someone has tips against this, I was pretty fed as invoker, and my team started getting picked off and losing, once they had more map control if I tried to push any lane or farm at all I would get called and die before it expired everytime, blade mail annihilating me.

I think we could have one if some of our players weren't making such huge mistakes, in some cases, myself included. But the axe was the only reason they were still in the game. What do I do against this kind of thing in the future?

Reporting a cheater -- is it worth it?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:25 AM PDT

I watched a replay where the enemy team's PA was obviously zoomed out. Eating trees with tangos offscreen, throwing daggers on enemies not in her camera view, etc.
How do I report this, and is it even worth it?
Match ID: 3801266444
You can see the PA use a tango at 2:00 into the gameplay.

When to buy lotus orb?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:13 AM PDT

I've been playing bristleback a-lot lately and I know lotus orb is a situational item, I was just wondering when I should be buying it and what heroes it's very good against.

When is Puck a good pick for offlane?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 10:23 AM PDT

She's pretty slippery, so it's good to get some farm and xp, but is it worth 'sacrificing' teamfight items like pipe, mekansm, crimson guard for it?

How to deal with invoker in lane?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 04:23 AM PDT

At level 4 hes got 100 dmg, +12 hp regen, 600 range, good animation. That would already be impossible to play against if he didnt have spells, which he does.

ps: ganking him isnt an option

Replay analysis request

https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3807661964 I was the jugg. I felt like we lost this game purely because of no detection. But since I farmed pretty fast (for my level) I couldn't carry dust around 30 mins. Was there anything I could have done in this scenario?

This is probably the millionth post on this topic but I figured I'd ask anyway. Coming from League to Dota, fastest way to learn heroes? Also turbo mode, yes or no?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:57 AM PDT

Hey all! I'm not looking for advice on mechanics or anything, I'm just wondering what you guys think is the best method for a beginning player to learn what heroes do. I understand generally how mobas work, but learning an entirely new roster is a little daunting. I did all of the tutorials except for the multiplayer match, which makes you play in turbo mode and forces you to play 25 games as low complexity heroes. Do you think this is a good starting point for me? Or should I just brute force normal mode for a while? Thank you!

New player looking to learn Nyx Assassin?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:08 AM PDT

Hi, I'm super new to DotA 2 and mobas in general and was wondering if someone could link me to some guides or maybe videos on playing Nyx Assassin. He's the first hero I want to learn because I think running around invisible is pretty fun lol. Or maybe someone could help me out with some questions I have.

1) Is there a hero tier list for DotA 2 or is that kind of thing irrelevant here? Because I've read Nyx is shadowed by certain heroes that does everything better?

2) What is my role as Nyx? Am I supposed to be going after the weak heroes and finishing them off or opening up fights with vendetta into impale on priority targets for my team to come in?

3) What items should I get on Nyx? I'm always getting mana boots into max Dagon into Ethereal Blade but after that I'm kinda lost. Also saw a video where the guy said meteor hammer is better than Dagon but he didn't go into why. Dagon burst damage seems so useful.

How do you feel about techies?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:07 AM PDT

I played dota today for the first time in 2018. IDR when I last played it (sometime in 2017). It showed me my best hero. 5 win streak, 73% win rate the majestic filthily bomber techies! I'm expecting some hate. I too hate hour long games. My other two are sniper (8, 64%) and shaman (5, 65%).

I am stuck at 3.3k barrier

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:53 AM PDT

How i improve my game so that i can reach 4k? It seems i always stuck at 3.3k, when i reaching this point, i will lose so much mmr that i am back to 2k again,

-- EDIT -- this is my dotabuff https://www.dotabuff.com/players/147966184 i play in SEA

my strongest role is between carry or mid, i started as carry and starting to learn mid, recently i also started to try position 4(since 3k brackets seemingly has carry surplus) but only with certain heros which aggressive like tusk or NS, but its my optimal role

is there any tips or insight so i can climb to 4k, of course its always being "git gud", but i mean how to "git that gud" ?

Why would you upgrade Force Staff into Hurricane Pike on melee heroes? Why would you even buy Dragon Lance on them in the first place?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:21 AM PDT

When building Hurricane Pike, rush Force staff or Dragon Lance first?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:39 AM PDT

I always get force staff first to acquire a means of escape. The only time I get Dragon Lance first is if the hero already has an escape: Clinkz, Weaver.

I started playing dota again. Why the HELL did volvo put 4 legends against 1 legend in ranked solo party?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:33 AM PDT

4 legends and a 4 star archon VS 2 star archon. And our legend was only 1 star like theirs. I called this out at the start and then it proceeded to a 25min wreckfest

How to counter pangolier?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:29 AM PDT

I just had a game even if in the safelane with 2 supps the pango is unstoppable and when he got to lvl 6 its just pure mayhem and total space creation because he can just tp while rolling away. What items can i build to counter him if my team only has few counter picks. Also its just 3k rank thanks
