Mafia III: Can great atmosphere overshadow bad gameplay and level design?

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 10:28 PM PDT

I recently picked this game up and it made me think about som things.

The atmosphere in his game is fantastic. The music, characters, visual environments and a great attention to details all come together just fine. the main characters are all well writen and very likable in their own way, the main character might come across as a little bit bland in comparission with Father James, Donovan or Vito Scaletta.

On the other hand, the quest design is nohing but dreadful, before setting out on a "real" story mission, you have to complete a number of open world quest that are pretty much the same quest over and over again. The main story missions are well made and engaging though, but getting there is a grind and a real pain! Same hing goes for the open world itself, finding an interesting place filled with members of a rival faction gives no real reward because the enemies respawn when the open world quest activates!

Have you played other games with similar issues: great atmosphere but bad/boring gameplay? Do you think a good atmosphere can "carry" an otherwise bad or even mediocre game?

What's everyone's opinion on Far Cry 5 so far? How does it compare to the previous games?

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 05:07 PM PDT

I've spent about 6 hour at the moment and I have to say I'm mostly enjoying it. The map is gorgeous and filled with content. Removal of annoying mechanics like tower climbing and pointless animations (Skinning, wound healing, patting bodies) are little changes that have come a long way for me. The side missions are also a step up from previous games as they are higher quality and more varied. It still has a bit of a checklist feel but removing the mini-map really does make the game feel like it's full of things to find on my own. Villains and story are also serviceable. Like previous Far Cry games the characters are the stand out while the story is a bit by-the-numbers. The followers are a stand out and fill any particular way of playing the game. Huge fan of having a sniper pick off enemies from afar to get their attention while me and another follower sneak with our bows through a base. It really perfects what makes the games enjoyable to me. Haven't played Arcade but considering it's bigger than previous Far Cry map editors I have no question It'll take up a lot of my time.

I do have some issues though. AI is mediocre at the moment. I've had friendly followers run into gun fire to pick me up after being downed rather than shooting someone right next to my body. It does still have one of the bigger Far Cry issues of being too busy. I'll walk through a forest and get attacked by a plane that spotted me and then it'll follow me around for way too long. Also driving on the road is useless. There will be enemies that will spot you within a minute and you'll be in a gun fight. As someone who plays on hard this has been infuriating at times. Sticking with an ATV off road has mostly fixed it. Thankfully I don't seem to be attacked as much by animals. No Hawks swooping down or constant bullet sponge animals (Well maybe besides bears).

Overall It's a sequel and I'm confused when people say these games are just "reskins". It keeps the core people enjoy, adds some great features, removes some annoying features but unfortunately hasn't removed THE worst feature which is the constant actions and business. Villans and characters are great and it has a dark sense of humor that is absorbing. A really enjoyable sand-box. Overall I'd give it an 8 but it's still early and that will probably change.

What do you guys think?
