Meta - Can we please have instant removal/flagging of random Youtube videos that are just linked with little to no explanation from the OP (like the ones that don't come from gaming devs or websites)?

Posted: 02 Mar 2018 02:06 AM PST

I just checked a couple of pages of the new tab and saw half a dozen topics that only linked to a random Youtube video.

If you're just going to link to a video with no explanation in the comments- at the very least - WRITE THE NAME OF THE YOUTUBE ACCOUNT ASSOCIATED WITH IT.

At the very least, we would know first hand that the video comes from the game's developer = which is great information.

Or if it comes from a gaming website = which can be opinionated, but at least offered some research.

Or if it comes from a random gamer (like you and I, and thousands of people here) = in which case, we'd think twice if we're going to delve into those opinions or not really mind them

The reason I'm a little bit bothered by this is because after 3 decades of gaming, I've grown accustomed to hearing of numerous opinions and discussions about the different games we play.

  • The good thing is back in the old days, you are either speaking to another gamer in person (ie. you're in the arcade, and someone tells you why the grind in Dig Dug is repetitive and does not offer you much of a reward system)...

  • Or you're speaking to someone in a forum and you will have a back-and-forth conversation (ie. you like Final Fantasy 6, but he prefers Final Fantasy 7; and the two of you then ask who would win in a fight - Kefka or Sephiroth?)

  • But when you add Joe Gamer #73,479 who has his own Youtube channel... that's where the problem of communication arises.

Because you're listening to another gamer on equal footing as you, but there's no communication going on - you can't magically talk to an uploaded video and receive a response.

What happens instead is this:

  • You end up discussing with another gamer whose beliefs are influenced by, you guessed it - Joe Gamer #73,479; whereas your beliefs are influenced by Joe Gamer #3,423 whose channel includes videos of cats (and I love cats, so this Joe Gamer gets my Likes and Subscribes, I guess?)

So if you're going to link an opinion piece or article video from a random gamer like you and I - at the very least offer YOUR OWN explanation as to why it's worth believing or discussing those points. Add some more information; provide a summary; give us the credentials of Joe Gamer; etc.

Otherwise, those should be considered low effort content on your part.

I made an infographic of all major and mid-size publishers ranked by revenue.

Posted: 02 Mar 2018 06:50 AM PST

Hi there, I made this in my spare time because I wanted a way to see who owned what and how big certain companies are. I was surprised by many things along the way, and old memories were certainly rekindled!

Just a few notes: I didn't religiously list all franchises or subsidiaries owned by each entity because, well, that would be impossible. I tried to keep the list concise, and limited to just "AAA" publishers, so some smaller publishers like Codemasters and Frontier are not included (financial information is often not available for these either). Revenues were converted to USD for the sake of consistency so they are very much approximate and for the sake of comparison rather than accuracy.

What’s the best game you bought but never finished?

Posted: 01 Mar 2018 03:57 PM PST

Hello.

Topic is about really awesome games that you got hyped for and bought, but sadly were not able to finish them.

This isn't about games that you thought were awesome only to be disappointed in and never liked. That's kinda very common, haha.

———-

So for me, the game I most regret not finishing was THE WITCHER 3. Yep... that game. Essentially the game that was one of the best rpgs of this decade.

I got it on PS4 and loved it, and Gwent. I got to a point 90+ hours later that I was in a cave and was supposed to rescue Dandelion I think (can't remember), then I just stopped playing, and never went back.

Some time later, I got the Hearts of Stone pack that had the physical Gwent deck. I installed the dlc but never played it.

Then, earlier in 2017, the GOTY was on sale on Steam so I got that. Installed it. Have yet to play it.

———

I honestly don't know why I did not feel like continuing my old PS4 save, nor why I have yet to give it another go on PC this time even though it's been in my backlog for months.

Even more unfortunate is that I know it's an awesome game, and I bought it twice, but other games held my interest more each time.

——-

So yes, what are your best unfinished games?
